We’ll hold you responsible if anything happens to Ekweremadu – Igbo lawmakers tell Ndume

The South East Caucus in the House of Representatives has said it would hold Senator Ali Ndume responsible if anything happens to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

In a statement yesterday by its leader, Chukwuka Onyema, the caucus accused Ndume of interfering in what is clearly a statutory and professional duty of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in respect to the agency’s investigation of allegations against the Deputy Senate President.

According to the caucus, it had carefully followed the ongoing investigations by the EFCC in the allegations levelled against Ekweremadu, hoping that the law would take its natural course to vindicate the innocent.

“However, like every responsible and patriotic Nigerian, we have every reason to worry after reading the comments by Senator Ali Ndume claiming that the EFCC is treating Ekweremadu with kids gloves and, therefore, canvassed for Ekweremadu’s detention and indictment by the agency in spite of the obvious ill health of Senator Ekweremadu.

“While Ekweremadu needs to be alive to face his investigation, Ndume prefers to push EFCC to compromise the health of Ekweremadu no matter the possible outcome.

“Indeed, reading Senator Ndume’s comments clears every iota of doubt that himself and some other APC senators and cabals are behind the ordeal of the Deputy Senate President and that this investigation has to do with the remorseless efforts to unseat the Senate leadership.


“It is now easier to link the hostage-taking of Senator Ekweremadu and attempted hostage-taking of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, on July 24, 2018 by agents of the State on a day both were supposed to be presiding over the Senate.

“We are not restraining the EFCC from heeding Senator Ndume’s hate speech and prompting to act unprofessionally, detain Ekweremadu or act in ways inimical to his health and well-being, but we surely know those to hold responsible should anything happen to Ekweremadu,” the South East lawmakers stated.

A Makurdi High Court yesterday restrained the eight suspended members of the Benue State House of Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment of Governor Samuel Ortom.

Justice Theresa Igoche also restrained them from sitting, and upheld their suspension pending the determination of the motion on notice, saying; “I agree that the applicants have made out a case for the grant of orders sought therein.

“The order also restrains the chief judge of Benue State from receiving or acting on any process or request issued pursuant to the purported sitting, proceedings and resolutions of July 30, 2018, aimed at or started to remove Governor Samuel Ortom pending the determination of the motion on notice.”

Justice Igoche upheld the subsisting order earlier given by the Chief Judge, Justice Adam Onum, restraining the former Speaker, Terkimbi Ikyange, and the ex-principal officers from parading as same.

He ordered the security agencies to vacate the Assembly’s premises.

The Adamawa state police command have stopped a peaceful protest organised by the state Christian Association of Nigeria.
The group had planned to stage the protest to register their displeasure over the level of insecurity in Nigeria.

The CAN Chairman in the state, Bishop Stephen Mamza, told the Christians who had gathered for the protest as early as 9am, that the protest would no longer hold as the police has called for its cancellation.

The Christian body had planned to march to the state governorment house where they would present a petition to the governor, Mohammed Jibrilla,. who would then present it to president Buhari.

MEMBERS of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, have returned to court, seeking for the nullification of the last congress conducted by a faction of the party in the state and the election of Senator Iyiola Omisore as the party’s governorship candidate.

The faction led by Chief Ademola Ishola, which announced Barrister Kehinde Atanda as the party’s governorship candidate, insisted that the congress that produced Omisore was illegal going by the court order flouted by the senator and his group.

Barrister Olayinka Sokoya, counsel to the SDP in a suit filed by two of its state officers, Alhaji Rasheed Mayowa and Chief Azeez Alakinde-Ismaila, had tendered two separate rulings against Omisore’s faction and asked the court to restore the orders which would lead to the sacking of the Dr. Bayo Faforiji –led executives.

He explained that it was an urgent electoral matter that should be quickly disposed off to pave the way for smooth running of the party’s affairs in the state.

Responding, the Presiding Judge, Justice David Oladimeji, noted that “if an order is made against anyone, there are consequences if the said order is flouted”.

He asked the applicant’s counsel to write a formal request to the Chief Judge for proper transfer of the case to him as a vacation judge, disclosing that the matter was originally referred to Court 3 of the State High Court of Justice.

“I cannot deal with this matter now until there is a fiat. This is a matter that needs to be treated urgently and I am ready to attend to it. Write to the Chief Judge for reassignment of the matter. I am still in this court in the next eight weeks. But I need a fiat to ensure I am not engaging in a futile exercise.“

He thereafter adjourned sine die until the matter is reassigned to his court as a vacation judge.

The Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce, has condemned the invasion of the residences of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Juventus legend, Andrea Pirlo has revealed that forward, Cristiano Ronaldo can help the Serie A giants to win the UEFA Champions League trophy.

A political group in Katsina State, Katsina-Daura-Funtua Network for Justice under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has vowed to unseat Governor Aminu Bello Masari in 2019.

The group described him as a “deceiver” who has failed to fulfill his 2015 campaign promises to the electorate.

The forum also accused the governor of killing the local government system, which according to it, had resulted in the mismanagement of the statutory grants of the 34 local governments of the state.

The forum, which has 77 aspirants who contested for the state Assembly seats during the 2015 general election but lost at the party’s primaries, warned people it described as mischief makers to desist from dragging its members to the mud.

The Vice-Chairman of the Forum, Yahaya Nuhu Mafita, who made the position of the group known to newsmen shortly after their meeting in Katsina yesterday, said his members have been denied any form of participation in all sectors of government for reasons best known to the state government.

He said: “Considering the fact that 2019 general election is around the corner and there is no form of consideration of the forum or its members by the government. The forum after due consultations at various levels resolved to express its grievances against the government.

“We also condemn government for lack of democratic principles by muzzling the party and ensuring that the party is not run in accordance with its constitution and guidelines.”

However, the state Chairman of APC, Alhaji Shittu Shittu, has debunked the allegations raised by the forum, saying the action of the forum has nothing to do with members of the party in the state ahead of the 2019 general election.

Shittu described the allegations raised by the forum as baseless.

He told journalists: “Members of the forum made a request to the state government which the governor is working towards, but they failed to be patient to see what the governor will do. This might be the reason why they formed their forum. The forum cannot unseat Governor Masari.”

A former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Kabiru Tanimu-Turaki, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of deceiving Nigerians and lacking the quality of a good leader.

Turaki, who spoke at a meeting with members of the Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, stated that the Buhari-led administration had lied to Nigerians and failed to deliver on its campaign promises.

The former minister said the PDP had qualified candidates that could rescue Nigeria from hardship.

He said, “In 2015, President Buhari made three campaign promises bordering on the economy, insecurity in the North-East and the fight against corruption. But he has totally failed in all these areas.

“The issue of Boko Haram was the only trouble Nigeria had in 2015, and we all saw that former President Goodluck Jonathan was able to push these insurgents out of Nigeria and that was why the Independent National Electoral Commission was able to conduct elections in all the 774 local government areas of this country.

“Our expectation was that Buhari would end killings because he said within three months into his administration, anything that concerned Boko Haram would end.

“Nigeria under former President Jonathan had the fastest growing economy in Africa, but today, the reverse is the case as our economy has become a shadow of itself.

“Buhari claimed that if he became president, he would not go to foreign countries for treatment, but he did.

“He promised to bring down the price of fuel, food items and the exchange rate of a dollar to naira, but he has failed. This is sad.

The British Government has frowned at the alleged vote-buying, which marred the recent Ekiti State governorship election.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, described vote-buying as a form of electoral misconduct like rigging and ballot stuffing.

He stated this while addressing journalists shortly after a meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in Abuja on Friday.

He said, “I was there in Ekiti to monitor elections and I heard a lot of reports of alleged vote buying and we are convinced that some vote buying went on. I condemn it. Vote buying is illegal; it is against the law, it is just as vote rigging, it is just as bad as ballot stuffing.

“We cannot make a distinction when all these activities are illegal so I condemn that. What are we going to do about it? Well we just had a meeting with the chairman of INEC, we have been talking about public awareness and how the political parties themselves can take responsibility for condemning this action and not continuing it.

“We do hope that 2019 will be free, fair, credible and of course, peaceful elections.”

The British envoy, however, commended INEC for the conduct of elections in recent times, saying the UK government had faith in INEC and its leadership.

He added, “I think the election process itself went well, the materials were there, the security forces kept their distance and did manage to keep a peaceful election and we are seeing progress in how INEC is carrying out each election. So, we have confidence in INEC and the chairman.

“The UK has been a very strong supporter of INEC and together with the USAID, we are spending about $60m over a six-year period in support of deepening democracy in Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Department for International Development Secretary of State, Penny Maudaunt, advised security agencies to be neutral in conduct even as the 2019 general elections approached.

Maudaunt said, “Though the elections were largely peaceful and results widely endorsed by stakeholders, vote buying by both the main political parties was widely criticised.

“There is time to tackle some of the challenges noted before next year’s elections. But INEC will not be able to solve all electoral problems on its own. Everyone in society has a role to play and a contribution to make.

“Political parties must respect a code of conduct adhering to the highest standards. We encourage security agencies to remain visibly neutral and ensure a safe and secure environment for the electorate.”

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says it will need N310m to feed and administer drugs to dogs that will be deployed in states for the 2019 elections.

The Nigeria Police Force will also require N7m to feed 50 horses that would be used for patrol during the elections which will take place between February 16 and March 2, 2019.

According to the Punchng, this information is contained in the 2018 virement proposal sent to the National Assembly for the 2019 general election by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The total police budget for the elections stands at N30.5bn; the Office of the National Security Adviser, N4.2bn; the Department of State Services, N12.2bn; NSCDC, N3.5bn and the Nigeria Immigration Service, N2.6bn.

Buhari, in a letter he wrote to the National Assembly on Tuesday, requested a total virement of N228.8bn, largely allocated to new projects “inserted” in the 2018 by the National Assembly to offset part of the proposed cost of funding the 2019 general elections. The balance of N242bn needed to fund the 2019 elections will be captured in next year’s budget.

According to the details of the 2018 virement request the President submitted to the National Assembly, the NSCDC needs N1.2bn this year to prepare for the elections.
The virement request reads, “Medical and general expenses for dogs, N143,782,000; feeding of dogs: N166,315,000. “Hiring of speedboats: N499,500,000; welfare packages (contingency of N7,000 per state and FCT) N259m; accommodation allowances for monitors: N185,000,000.”

According to the virement document, police election budget this year stands at N679m, with N7.7m earmarked for feeding of horses and N100m for printing of non-security materials. The police also asked for N87.5m for the maintenance of aircraft and N407m for maintenance of the vehicles to be used for election monitoring.

The budget states in part, “Feeding of 50 horses: N7, 719, 454; maintenance of existing vehicles for 2019 elections for the period of 20 days: N407, 400, 000.”

Chief Segun Odegbami, a former Super Eagles footballer has declared his intention to vie for governorship in Ogun State on the platform of the Labour Party.

Denis Cesar Barros Furtado, a Brazilian doctor popularly known as "Dr. Bumbum," reportedly gave bank manager Lilian Calixto butt injections at his Rio home on Saturday, according to Time. She fell ill during the procedure and Furtado rushed her to the hospital, where she died hours later.

Authorities say Furtado disappeared after he dropped the woman off at the hospital and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.
Authorities also arrested Furtado’s mother, Maria de Fatima Barros, who worked with him.
Police have not released the woman’s exact cause of death.

Furtado’s lawyer said in a statement that "any conclusion regarding the death of Lilian Calixto and my client’s responsibility in this fatality is premature."

Members of the PDP Caucus in the Senate have thrown their weight behind the formation of a Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, which saw over 30 parties sign a MoU in Abuja to oust President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

Addressing National Assembly correspondents after meeting behind closed doors for an hour, the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio described the formation of the coalition as a giant stride by the former ruling party, saying that PDP will bounce back to power.

“We noted the giant strides of PDP in forming a coalition in order to win the 2019 general election,” he said.

The caucus however stated that it received with shock and disappointment reports of how Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state was beaten and teargassed at a PDP rally in Ado-Ekiti.

They called on the federal government to investigate the incident, wondering how a sitting governor could be so abused, adding that the caucus has set up a committee of five senators to interact with the Ekiti governor in order to get first hand investigation.

“We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to constitute the Commission of inquiry into how a sitting governor was beaten so that such things would not repeat itself again,” the caucus said.

They however called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be neutral in Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Ekiti state.

The caucus warned that if the election was rigged, it would be be difficult for Nigeria to have free and fair elections in 2019.

“We also appreciate the Supreme Court of Nigerian for delivering a landmark judgement in the case of the Senate President and that of Senator Albert Akpan,” Akpabio said.

Some federal lawmakers have disagreed over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) against President Muhammadu Buhari by the PDP, R-APC, and other political parties ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Senator Philip Gyunka on Tuesday described the alliance as “a welcome development”.

Gyunka in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria said: “The people are tired of the government of the day. I am very optimistic that this coalition will endure; after all, it is the same coalition that brought the current government into power in 2015.

“I believe that come 2019 power will change hands. The APC came preaching change but we have not seen any change.

“I want to assure Nigerians that the real change will happen in 2019 by the grace of God.”

On concerns that the PDP was defeated in 2015 on account of impunity and corruption and may not gain the confidence of the people in 2019, the lawmaker said the party had learnt from its mistakes.

Gyunka added: “We have learnt from our mistakes and we are ready to make amends where we failed.

“We are ready to sit at a roundtable to discuss issues to ensure that there is no imposition of candidates because we have learnt a lot from our past.

“Talking of impunity and corruption, this government is not immune from it; unfortunately they shy away from constructive criticisms.

“God pre-destines people to power and he whom God pre-destines he calls.”

But, Gyunka’s colleague, Senator Abu Ibrahim, described the coalition as “laughable” and said that APC would not be bothered about it.

He said: “If you take individuals, not more than two or three matter and may have impact in their states.

“They cannot win election without Buhari. I do not want to mention name but majority will not win election by themselves.

“Some of them matter in their states but they are not more than four out of this jamboree.

“For Buba Galadima, has he ever won an election? He was the longest parasite that hung to Buhari because he couldn’t deliver anything.

“I have been with them for the past 15 years, so I know them and their antics. Can he win his ward in Yobe? They do not even know him there.

“He is only an Abuja politician and in Abuja, he has no constituency except the constituency of the mouth.”

He added that the APC was not afraid of the large number of parties coming together, adding that many of them did not have members.

He said: “Of all those parties, tell me the one that has members. It is only R-APC that we may lose one governor to and three or four senators that is all.”

Ibrahim expressed optimism that the APC would win the 2019 elections, adding that most of the parties forming coalition did not have structure.

President has once again accused politicians of blackmailing him over the recent killings and clashes between herdsmen and farmers in some parts of the country. Speakiing at the APC Mega rally yesterday July 10th, President Buhari said a class of politicians are denting his image with claims that he has remained silent over the killings across the country because he belongs to the Fulani tribe.

“May I again clear the air on the issue of herdsmen and farmers conflict. Many politicians in their mischievous attitude have been blackmailing me and the APC-led administration purporting that I have not taken any action on the issue because I am a Fulani man. This is a cheap blackmail.” he said

He maintained that he is still committed to his oath of office to protect the lives of all Nigerians.

“The protection of lives and properties of Nigerians is my responsibility. This I have vowed to do and will stick to the oath of office. I assure you that measures are been taken to ensure lasting solutions,” he said.
