Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 3:23pm On Dec 13, 2005
nferyn

1)
are there any controlled tests performed to give evidence to the statement that female genital mutilation does not decrease libido? There are none that I'm aware of.

exactly, there are none. and there are no controlled test which prove that FEMALE CIRCUMSISION does decrease libido. Hence, my assumption of "no effect". To pacify people who are still steeped in culture (and there are many) it can still be done provided the conditions I stated earlier are met.
2) sensation: circumcised and uncircumcised women both have heightened sensation during intercourse.  The question of who has more, is impossible to answer as it subjective.
3) analogy: there has to be at least some partial similarity between the parts described for it to be an analogy. it could be identical and or the same. the clitoris and the ear have no similarity whatsoever.
4)
Not.The only thing that would demonstrate your point is evidence to the fact that libido is not affected by this practice.
YES! we are both arguing using the same stick. You say I haven't brought evidence to the fact that libido is not affected. And I also say that you have not broought evidence to the fact that libido is affected except the fact that assumption that it has "millions of nerve endings" and the assumption that libido must therefore be affected.
5) much more than libido: with my earlier stated "OK conditions", trauma is non-existent because the girl is a baby. hygiene has also been dealt with. at this point in time, i cannot see any other factors which need to be considered. an extremely male approach to the question? maybe, afterall, I am male. Yes so are you but forgive me as i'm not blessed with your open-mindedness. as for pleasure, I have already dealt with that at the beginning of this post.
6) "but why?": I have not ignored IAH and goodguy's comments. I responded to both even if tacitly. The most you can accuse me of is skirting around. And i will answer the question directly; the purpose, form the eyes of those for it i.e. those who hold strong cultural beliefs is that it discourages promiscuity. I WILL NOT go into whether it is effective or not.  My concern is preserving the culture beliefs of such people while not debasing womanhood. Finis!

PS
I know that there are others on here who are not wholly against female circumcision. please give your opinions. I don't need re-inforcements you give the impression to the indifferent observer that those against female circumcision are right. Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction!
Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 9:08pm On Dec 12, 2005
goodguy, obviously the anwser has already been discusssed earlier by others.
Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 8:41pm On Dec 12, 2005
read with an open mind and with patience and stop jumping the gun. in my very first post on this, I said it has not been proven that the act decreases the female libido. therefore, one can assume (at least I assume) that it has not effect if and when done while the girl is a baby. Being performed by a medical practitioner should dispel any doubts about infection.

and your analogy still does not stick. so u agree that body parts are unique in their own right? Good! that means there is no basis for perfect comparison as each part must be looked at on its own. finis!

lastly, as a corollary of there being 'no effect' as I earlier assumed (which is also what IAH agreed with if only for the sake of argument), it implies that "when removed, that ability is NOT impaired."

QED

PS
what u have to prove to me is that my assumption is wrong.
Politics / Re: Governor Muazu of Bauchi State: See Bauchi State and Die Happy! by Vongauche(m): 8:17pm On Dec 12, 2005
I am not surprised. EFCC say the only governors they don't have prima facie eveidence against are Donald Duke and a North-Eastern gov.-i believe it is Mu'azu
Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 8:06pm On Dec 12, 2005
@IAH: I am not a cannibal. There are clearly still people in society(minus the Western world) who believe that it should be done. But there are increasingly also a number of people in such societies who feel it should be stopped as it does not reduce female libido. What I suggested was the best attempt at a Pareto optimum i.e. making someone better-off without making another worse off. Shikena!

nferyn, ur analogy doesn't quite stick here. body parts are entirely unique and cannot be compared.
Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 7:45pm On Dec 12, 2005
if all the conditions i said were satisfied, the girl (who is a baby) will not have a traumatic experience as some people claim and "culture" is preserved. it's a win-win situation
Culture / Re: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by Vongauche(m): 7:22pm On Dec 12, 2005
*clears throat* i had this conversation with a female friend of mine. She was against it as she said it debases a woman. I am not against it because it is yet to be proven that (at least, i have no experience of the fact that) circumsised females DO NOT have less libido than their uncircumsised counterparts. I will be all for it if it could be done hygenically by a licenced medical pratictioner and at birth. That's just my own. *runs out before being lynched*
Computers / Which Laptop Should I Buy? (Budget: $1200) by Vongauche(m): 7:10pm On Dec 12, 2005
Fellow Nairaland users,

I am in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate your advice. The problem is that I need a new laptop and am currently scouting for one. I have browsed several websites and perused many a user review. I thought I had made a good choice in the HP Pavilion dv1000 series laptop but alas, it no longer takes my fancy (i heard of quite a few technical problems and poor customer support).

Anyway, here are my wants:

1) OS: Windows whatever
2) Display Size: at least 15"
3) Processor: anything but a Celeron and at least 1.6GHz!
4) Memory: at least 256mb RAM (512MB or higher preferable)
5) HDD: 60GB
6) Optical Drive: DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo
7) Networking: 802.11a/b/g & Bluetooth!
cool Battery Life: better than average, say about 3hrs
9) Expansion Slots: 1 PCI I/II PCMCIA slot
10) Communications: high-speed 56K data/fax modem 10/100 Base-T Fast Ethernet
11) Number of slots/ports: 2 or 3 USB ports, 1 or 2 headphone-out, 1 microphone-in, 1 RJ-11 (modem), 1 RJ -45 (LAN), 1 External VGA monitor port AND preferably 1 Built in 6-in-1 digital media reader OR a Memory Stick Pro reader
12) Build Quality: solid a la IBM/Sony
13) Finish: prefereably no fancy silver plastic; just ALL-BLACK
14) Speaker Quality: above average

As for the dimensions, I want something that's not too bulky (I am not good at estimating distances and weights!!!) My budget is no more $1,200 (the laptop must be a freaking awesome & durable beast for me to spend that much!).

Contributions from in-house geeks are especially requested. Novices can equally comment as long as they have experience of using the said brands/models.

Finally, under no circumstances would I consider any Toshiba for I have promised myself that I will not touch them even with a 10ft pole.

Thanks.
Travel / Re: Bellview Airplane Crashes After Taking Off From Lagos by Vongauche(m): 2:34pm On Oct 24, 2005
Hunter:

According to some of our media Nigeria doesn't have a nation wide radar system in place and that hampened rescue efforts. (also they said it's some times off because the power goes down to it)

Nigeria IS in the process of installing a nationwide radar system. The FG on behalf of NAMA, awarded a contract to a French company (Thales, i think) for this and it is not due to be completed until 2006/7.

May God blot out the souls of all those who perished and be with their families left behind.

My anger is at NEMA. Why didn't their satellite monitoring equipment pick up the distress signal sent? http://www.nigeriafirst.org/article_3531.shtml ---last paragraph. It was commisioned last year or is faulty already?
Why then didn't their rescue helicopters go there? In particular, where was this helicopter when everyone knew there was a plane missing? http://www.nigeriafirst.org/article_3532.shtml

NEMA officials at the crash site don't even have shovels shocked -see paragraph 10 http://www.businessdayonline.com/?c=45&a=2571Which one of you before building a house would rush out  to buy electrical fittings, appliances and furniture before bothering to buy a single concrete block to build the house?  angry
This is another classic Nigerian case of wasting public money and throwing good money after bad.

The head of NEMA has a lot to answer. He should resign but of course we all know that is not in our Nigerian character, fortunately or unforstunately. So he should be sacked with immediate effect. angry

All credit to the Nigerian Red Cross. Once again, they're in the thick of it. sleeves rolled and trying their best to clear up yet another mess.
Politics / Re: Pictures On the New 1,000 Naira Note by Vongauche(m): 12:35pm On Sep 30, 2005
sorry to burst ur bubble but...

all y'all are each asking for millions and billions of the note. this'll mean the naira would be even less wothrless than it already is.

and in anycase, riches don't necessarily equate to happiness.

be satisfied with what u have.
Literature / Re: Do You Remember the Pacesetters Books? by Vongauche(m): 6:33pm On Aug 12, 2005
I remember a few titles like Agony in her voice, "the worshippers" and the money doublers. Those are the few books I actually read a s a child. Good packaging, stories etc. Shame the publishers, Macmillan (i think) decided never to do it again cos they'll make a loss (duh!). Real shame. There some good Nigerian and African novels in the 80's with a western-style stories but with an african context which made them very interesting.
These Pacesetter books are some of the things I should buy when I make money and I'm older by God's grace. 'tried searching ebay for them but was unsuccessful.
Sports / Re: Laloko: Angola must be stopped at all cost by Vongauche(m): 6:20pm On Aug 12, 2005
I have resigned myself to the fact that Nigeria would not qualify for world cup. We might very well win our last macthes but so will Angola. Afterall, their remaining matches are easier theoretically. Don't get me wrong, I'm an optimist when it comes to sports but I'm also a realist. The writing was on the wall long ago. Maybe it's a good spur for us to blaze through come SA 2010 especially with u-21 players reaching their prime. That said, the current NFA (+ Sports Ministry and most other national sports associations) is a cesspool of corruption and ineptitude
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Serie A is coming: A review of the Big 3 by Vongauche(m): 6:11pm On Aug 12, 2005
good to see that there are people who follow serie A. I'm a Giallorossi supporter and although I now don't love Capello i still have mad respect for him. I hope we do well i.e. 4th and 5th but it seems like FIFA & UEFA are out to see that we are decimated with their bans. Spatelli looks a capable replacement. If only the players act like a unit and are commited especially Cassano undecided
Yeah Milan weren't impressive last season. 'Still think Juve will win it. And like you said, Inter are finally buying the right players. Hopes Obagoal does well for them and Nigeria.
Sports / Re: 10th IAAF World Championship in Athletics - Helsinki 2005 by Vongauche(m): 5:45pm On Aug 12, 2005
good summaries whizkid.
what did u think of nigeria's performance throughout the competition especially seeing as the men just messed up in the 4x100m relay today?
it really pains me to see the way nigeria sports is going down the drain.cry the only bright spots of recent have been basketball (continental) and the u-21 football.
i mean athletics used to give us some prestige in the days of chidi imo, olapade adenikin, ezenwa bros, chioma ajunwa (controversial), mary onyali etc. but now the best have taken up foreign citizenship rightly or wrongly e.g obikwelu(wrongly angry) and alozie (rightly).
honestly, the current crop of male sprinters aren't good individaully but together i thought they could do something in the relays. as for the women, ojokolo and nku are old and i congratulate them for their tireless effort over the years but we need young and fresh legs. unfortunately, there aren't any to the best of my knowledge except doris jacobs who is a quarter miler. what happened to the angela atede the hurdler?

men
fasuba: great starter but poor finisher a la dennis mitchel
emedolu: the best nigerian athlete and consistent over the years. struggled with a niggling injury through the championship
aliu: former world junior champion. was the great hope but never really achieved greatness. inconsitent; only major achievement was gold at 8th AAG.

the US floundered in their heat and i thought this was nigeria's chance to win our first gold in sprints on the international level. we came last because of our baton exchange. fasuba didn't really start well surprisingly and his exchange with emedolu wasn't good; just ok. emedolu and the "other fellow" made a good exchange but the last with deji aliu was TERRIBLE. It's like they were amateurs. Deji aliu himself yelled when he received the baton and didn't bother putting any effort in his run as it wouldn't have made a difference. angry

PS
@whizkid: what were your PB times in the 100m, relay and height cleared in high jump? why didn't you carry on in uni?
Politics / Re: The Flag of Nigeria by Vongauche(m): 5:14pm On Aug 03, 2005

Politics / Re: 1,000 Naira Note: Will there be inflation? by Vongauche(m): 1:32am On Aug 02, 2005
fellow Nairaland users, you talk well  grin (both for and against)

but i have to say that introducing a 1000 naira note now would cause inflation. i can't put my finger on it right now because i really should be sleeping. i guess, it'll be a status thing. yes, we all know inflation is a mismatch between demand and supply (lesser) but such a new note would cause inflation. we forget this is Nigeria where the norm hadrly ever applies. one always has to add the "x" or should i say N-factor. often book sense doesn't apply to Nigeria and i'm afraid this is one of such cases.

one interesting twist i'll like to add is what if the CBN made it a 1000 coin shocked? seriously, think about it. something tells me there would not be inflation. fine, there's no rationale to it and it'll be cumbersome to carry large amounts around but people'll hold on to it for dear life. imagine if it rolls into a gutter  grin there is something wrong with the naira no thanks to our economy. i think the proposed ECO currency english-speaking west african countries would be very advantageous to us. it should put a halt to our inflation however slight.

failing that can't we revalue the naira and like start all over? i guess, even that is putting the cart before the horse.
Travel / Re: What can one do In Lagos? by Vongauche(m): 1:00am On Aug 02, 2005
the question is what can't one do in Lagos? cool

as the lyrics of one of the songs by trybesmen go:
"shey na babe u de find? OWAMBE!"
"shey na job u de find? OWAMBE!"
"shey na ride u de find? OWAMBE!"

or how did the chorus go again?

U can find anything in Lagos. GO to mad party, beach, concerts, hang out at dem eateries. there are a thousand and one things I can't even think of right now!
the only thing is that the natural beauty of Lagos has been destroyed/disfigured. So if u r looking for tourist spots or serene place then forget Lagos tongue

ABJ is nice and most things are planned, neat and not crowded. although all that is rapidly changing, unfortunately. i fear the FG is going to slip and ABJ'll turn into another Lagos minus the night life & business. people in ABJ are much more saner than Lagosians. maybe, it's cos most ABJ are JJCs. I have 2 grouses with ABJ: lack of constant water and dull night life/ recreation. the latter probably cos it should be a worker's(civil servant) town. anyway, i digress again. there are many things to do in Lagos. it's up to whoever to find out exactly what he wants. lipsrsealed
Phones / Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Vongauche(m): 12:29am On Aug 02, 2005
well, MTN might be "black-owned" but it's still South African. And it has been said by other africans(east, central and west) that black South africans are xenophobic. That, in a way, is understandable considering that they might feel other africans coming into their country are adding unnecessay competition to the job market/social climate which is already difficult for black S. Africans. However, this is no excuse for the alleged maltreatment of Nigerian MTN employees.

Anyway, what I really want to know is if Globacom is really Nigerian as they claim to be. I mean 100% Nigerian. How exactly did Adenuga make his money? People say from oil, but is he merely fronting for some one or some faceless people? It seems like Globacom has some Indians in quite a few key management decisions? why?
Politics / Re: The Flag of Nigeria by Vongauche(m): 1:25pm On Jul 19, 2005
abeg o, i am 100% heterosexual. so angelgal, hotangel and all other ladies in the house feel free to toast me &viceversa. i know u want to cool .and there is something very wrong with being gay/lesbian IMO but that's another topic.

anyway, i say keep the Nigeria flag but choose a definite colour.

@makgod: it's a shame some peeps aren't proud to be nigerians but who can we blame them
Family / Re: Women Paying Dowry For their Husbands? by Vongauche(m): 9:13pm On Jul 17, 2005
I don't mean to be a smart arse grin but a dowry is the opposite of a bride-price

dowry= money paid to groom's family

bride-price=money paid to bride's family
Politics / Re: The Flag of Nigeria by Vongauche(m): 7:54pm On Jul 17, 2005
this is my first post on here. here goes...

i agree with all of u and not cos i'm new and trying to fit in cheesy yes, i do sometimes feel that the naija flag is dull at times but the design is significant and i'm glad we all know the raison d'etre - green symbolising lush vegetation, and white symbolising peace (unity in diversity).

but sometimes i stare at the US stars and stripes and I actually find it RAZZ! shocked and what happens if and when Puerto Rico becomes the 51st state? they'll add another star!

the japanese sun disc is apt given it's the "land of the rising sun" and the sun does rise in the east grin

as for jamaica, black symbolises the colour of the people, yellow is for the sun and green is for their vegetation.

and the so-called "copy-catter" african flags (ghana, senegal, cameroun etc) are so because yellow, balck and red are meant to be pan-african colours. these countries were strong proponents of Pan-africanism and negritude (Kwame Nkrumah & Leopold Senghor). that's the reason why u have rastafarians like Bob Marley (RIP) wearing such coloured hats and wristbands.

my only constantgreviance with the Nigerian flag is that the shade of green changes angry yes, i know we Nigerians are generally unsophisticated (including myself) but we can't we decide on a particular shade of green? yesterday, it was "normal" green. today, it's dark green and tomorrow it'll be light green. even the FG is guilty of this!

while we're deciding what shade of green can we tell the NFA to add one more colour to our official football strip? green is generally not a nice colour for a football jersey. And NO, I'm not gay!
