The traditional ruler of Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Chijioke Nwankwo, has described the petrol price hike by the Federal Government as painful but needful.

He said if the new price was allowed, there would be long term effect that would be of benefit to the people.

He advocated a change of lifestyle by the people so as to adapt to the new pump price regime of N145 per litre of fuel.


The monarch said Nigerians should be encouraged to embrace bicycle as part of a new lifestyle to adjust to the new order.

He added, “I don’t know what the cost of petrol pump price is in all the countries of the world, but in some areas, I have visited, especially in Europe and America, Nigeria enjoys the cheapest petrol pump price regime.

“In such areas, you would see people ride bicycles to go to work because the cost of transportation is high because of high cost of petrol.

“Nigerians should be encouraged to start riding bicycles and bicycle allowances should be reintroduced, particularly for civil servants.”

Nwankwo blamed the Federal Government on the way the fuel hike was announced without adequate consultation with the stakeholders.

The traditional ruler added, “That might be why organised labour and civil rights groups are planning a protest on this matter.

“On sensitive issues as this, there should be adequate sensitisation of the people before reaching a decision on the matter.

“Nobody is happy. Life is extremely difficult. The economy is generally bad. The whole thing is having a devastating impact on the people.

“Most filling stations are now selling petrol between N150 and N155 per litre and it will continue to climb from there. And things will get harder.

“The government ought to have educated the people; tell them the long term effects or justification for the increase.

“The trouble with our society is that our government will always distance itself from the people when taking decisions that will eventually affect the lives of the people.”

To assuage the anger of Nigerians over the increase in the price of premium motor spirit to N145 a litre, the Muhammadu Buhari administration has rolled out palliative measures running into half a trillion naira.




Over eight million Nigerians will benefit from the programmes scheduled to begin in a matter of weeks.
Highlights of the palliatives are:

5.5 million school children to be fed for 200 school days in first phase of homegrown school feeding programme
Over 1.6 million Nigerian traders, market women, men, artisans to receive loans.
1 million extremely poor and vulnerable Nigerians to receive N60,000 this year in 12 months payments of N5000 each.
All together the federal government would be directly impacting the lives of more than 8 million Nigerians in different social investment 2016 budget spending that would provide succor and be a ready-made palliative to ordinary Nigerians.
This disclosure was made last night by the Senior Special Assistant for Media & Publicity to the President, Mr. Laolu Akande, in an interaction with the press in Abuja.
He gave new details and a breakdown of the interventions and palliatives, some of which he said would be starting in a matter of weeks thus:

the direct payment of N5000 monthly to one million extremely poor Nigerians for 12 months as provided for in the 2016 budget for which N$68.7B has been appropriated.
the direct provision of very soft loan -cash for market women, men and traders, including artisans and Agric workers. This would be for a total of 1.76m Nigerians, without the requirement for conventional collateral. Some of the traders will likely get about N60,000. A total sum of N140.3B has already been appropriated for this in the budget,
3*payment of between N23,000 to N30,000 per month to 500,000 unemployed graduates who would be trained, paid and deployed to work as volunteer teachers, public health officers and extension service workers among other responsibilities.
-They would also be given electronic devices to empower them technologically both for their assignments and beyond
-similarly 100,000 artisans would also be trained and paid
N191.5B has been set aside for this in the passed budget.
4. At least 5.5 million Nigerian primary school children -ie starting first in 18 states-three per geopolitical zones-would be fed for 200 school days under the free Homegrown School Feeding Programme. N93.1B has been appropriated for this in the 2016 budget.
5. 100,000 tertiary students in Science Technology Engineering & Maths-STEM, plus Education will partake in the N5.8B already provided for this education grant in the budget. This payment would also be paid directly to the students.
When added together this year alone, more than 8 million Nigerians would be benefiting from the Social Investment budget.
Akande who works from the Office of the Vice President said the N500B social investement programmes of the Buhari administration is a ready made palliative to lift Nigerians from poverty and economic hardship.
“Long before now the Presidency has made adequate arrangements in the 2016 budget to ensure that Nigerians are lifted from poverty and hardship,” the spokesperson stated.
This will not only assuage the current pains arising from the new fuel pricing regime, but will provide ongoing social safety nets for over 8 million Nigerians this year alone, according to Akande.
He added that this is beside the jobs that would be created by the infrastructural projects that would be restored and the new ones that would soon be taking off.
Said he: “the Buhari presidency is keen to ensure that Nigerians are lifted and that if necessary on an ongoing basis palliatives measures would always been considered to address the conditions of the people.”

The Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Thursday said the over 40 million Nigerian students would re-enact the Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of subsidy from petroleum product next week.


The National President of NANs, Comrade Tijani Shehu, stated this in Abuja, at a protest rally where the association called for the removal of the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

He said NANS is already mobilizing Nigerias students to resist the new N145 per litre pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise called petrol.

According to him, “A directive has been issued to all tertiary institutions to shut down all campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday, next week. After that, they will all converge on Abuja for a mass protest.

”On behalf of NANS and the whole 40.1 million Nigeria students, we condemn the new fuel price and by Tuesday or Wednesday, the whole Nigeria student would occupy Nigeria. So the Federal Government should look into this before NANS mobilize the entire Nigeria students to occupy Nigeria”.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has expressed optimism that the on-going struggle for the restoration of Biafra republic must surely come to pass and when restored, would outlive the existing entity called Nigeria.


Deputy leader of IPOB, Uche Mefor who was reacting to a statement credited to David Cameron, the British Prime Minister that "Nigeria is fantastically corrupt", stated in a press statement issued to newsmen, via e-mail, that he agreed in totality with Cameron that Nigeria, as a nation is actually too corrupt and blood shedding that the only way out is for the members to intensify efforts to restore Biafra.

According to the statement, "We members of IPOB worldwide under leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Director of Radio Biafra accuse Nigerian leaders of hallucinating–Biafra predates you and your Nigeria, Biafra will outlive you and Nigeria".

The statement further read in part: "Nigerians are as corrupt as those they are prosecuting. They have blood in their hands. They are ethnic bigots, unrepentant dictators, religious fundamentalists and arch genocidists. They are arch supporters of terrorism and they also have franchise in Boko Haram insurgency".

"They circumvented the electoral laws in many occasions. They do not understand the basic tenets of democracy. They do not understand what inclusive governance/development is and as such thinks that they are ruling a particular section of the country".

"These are men whose only mission is to annihilate their perceived enemies with air of finality. They ordered the commission of crime against humanity and an enforced disappearance of Biafran youths and refused to watch the atrocity they committed".

"It is hypocritical in the circumstance to having admitted that they are the leader of the most 'fantastically corrupt' country. Why then is the British government inviting them? We will always be vindicated"!

The Commandant General, Riverine Security (Coast Guard of the Federation), Commander Bibi Oduku, has said the militants bombing oil installations in Delta State under the cover of Niger Delta Avengers, NDA hails from Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of the state.

He also fingered an ex-militant leader, who he accused of "aiding and abetting criminals in their community in the recent attack on oil and gas installations within and outside the kingdom."

Commander Oduku asserted: "Investigation by our security outfit has shown that Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, which has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks on oil facilities in the Niger Delta are from Gbaramatu kingdom."

According to him, "It will be difficult for an outsider to storm Gbaramatu community and carry out such coordinated attacks on oil facilities without insider –collaboration.

"It is not possible for any militia groups to carry out attacks in Gbaramatu without the permission or blessings of the said ex-militant leader. The people of Gbaramtu are enlightened enough to understand the economic and environmental implications of pipeline bombing and spill, and as such will not allow outsiders to carry out attacks on oil facilities within and close to the kingdom," he said.

He said his Coast Guard of the Federation was prepared to put an end to the activities of Niger Delta Avengers, which had claimed responsibility for the latest attacks on oil installations in the area and environs and called for the support of government and stakeholders to actualize the aim.

Oduku also tasked traditional rulers, community leaders and well- meaning Niger- Deltans to denounce the activities of group as devilish, advising youths in the region not to join this group and other militia groups.
