The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, has said the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, never visited the country to commiserate with the family of the late Gani Fawehinmi. The declaration is coming even as people are insisting that they watched Ribadu on television, as he was condoling with the family of the late legal icon in his Ikeja, Lagos, and residence. Besides visiting Gani’s family, Ribadu was also said to have demanded to see the corpse of the late Gani, a request that was also granted by the family. After visiting the morgue, where he spent some minutes, paying tribute to the late human rights activist, Ribadu left the country, leaving some Nigerians to wonder if he was not the same man the federal wanted badly. The inspector general of police, who was on his first official assignment to Lagos, yesterday, since he assumed office about six weeks ago, still maintained that Ribadu never touched Nigerian soil during the period in question. The IGP, therefore, challenged journalists to show the pictures of the former EFCC chairman they snapped while he was in Gani’s residence ‘‘Who took his photograph when he came to Nigeria. I want you to show me the photograph you snapped him when he came to Nigeria,” he insisted. On rampant kidnapping, which has become a booming business in the South-East, the IGP said policemen were not folding their arms. He added that security had been beefed up in the zone, especially in Anambra State. He, however, outlined some of the challenges faced by the police in its effort to track down the kidnappers. One of such challenges, according to him, is the inability to get information on the identity, among others, of the owners of the SIM cards used by the kidnappers to communicate with the families of the victims. Another one is lack of scientific equipment, which could provide photographs, addresses of users of the SIM card. According to him, these were made difficult by the fact that people buy SIM cards in the streets. He disclosed that the service providers are presently cooperating with the Police in this regard. Other factors according to Onovo, is lack of cooperation from victims and members of their families. ’’We discovered that relatives of victims don’t cooperate with the Police. They are interested in paying ransom. If there is no ransom, there will be no kidnapping. We require the cooperation of the victims. There is need to re-orientate victims, so that they can give information to the Police when they are released,” he said. He also stressed the need for banks to cooperate with the Police, by giving the kidnappers marked money. He explained that as part of the efforts to curb kidnapping and religious crisis, the Nigerian Police had established anti- terrorists Unit and trained some officers and men on terrorism. The IG said he would pay attention to capacity building, which includes, training and retraining, welfare of officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force and intelligence –led policing. He explained that policies and measures put in place by his predecessors that are relevant would be sustained and enhanced, while those that are not, would be dropped. He commended the Lagos State Police Command for working hard to reduce crime rate in the state and urged the Police Commissioner, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo, to “export” his strategies to other states. He also commended the Lagos State government for its supports to the police command. Earlier in his welcome address, Akpoyibo enumerated the achievement recorded by the state command and the challenges facing it. He commended the past Commissioners of Police in the state for their efforts at combating crime, adding that he had evolved an intelligence-driven crime combating strategy. Akpoyibo disclosed that bank robbery had reduced from 22 in 2007, to 13 in 2008, and 3 in 2009. He said the number of Police deaths during encounters with armed robbers have drastically reduced from 59 in 2007, to 33 in 2008, and 6 in 2009. According to the CP, a similar trend was recorded in car snatching. He explained that in 2007, a total of 1,695 were snatched, 939 in 2008, and 516 in 2009. Akpoyibo, however, appealed to the IG to assist the Command, by providing logistics and other things that would enable it achieve the zero-level tolerance for crime. Which Way Naija, ![]()

Former boxing rivals Muhammad Ali and Sir Henry Cooper were reunited tonight -in the unlikely setting of an equestrian event at Windsor Castle. It is 46 years since Cooper knocked Cassius Clay, as Ali then was, to the canvas in the fourth round of a bout at Wembley. Ali said that he was hit so hard his ' ancestors in Africa felt it'. Yet in the next round the fight was stopped because of cuts to Cooper's face. The following year the young boxer changed his name to Muhammad Ali and the rest, as they say, is history. The pair were star attractions of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games gala night. He went on to become the most popular sportsman of his generation and his quickfire wit and even quicker fists brought him success on an unimaginable scale. His showmanship, charisma and sporting talent led to him becoming possibly the most famous person on the planet in the early 1970s. Ali was the three-time heavyweight boxing world champion, winning 56 of his 61 professional fights. Yesterday they took a lap of honour in an open-top Range Rover around the Castle Arena, venue earlier in the day for the European Championships team event. Ali, 67, who has lived with Parkinson's Disease since 1984, received a standing ovation from the crowd, The three-times world champion, now 67, has embarked on a tour of the UK which experts fear could be his last. On Wednesday he visited a gym run by another boxing legend, Ricky Hatton, in Hyde, Manchester. And he and Lonnie attended a dinner held in his honour at Old Trafford. The tour includes a series of dinners to raise money for his charities, including the Muhammad Ali Centre in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky. Fans have paid more than £1,000 for a seat and up to £15,000 to sit on the top table with the boxing legend, even though he will not be giving any speeches. Today Ali will be the guest of honour at a dinner at the Britannia Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. On Friday he will sample the more genteel world of horse dressage when he travels to Windsor, in Berkshire for the Alltech FEI European Jumping and Dressage Championships and he will also appear at Wembley Stadium on August 30. His last UK visit was several years ago when he said: 'The UK is very close to my heart. 'I want to visit again not only to raise awareness and funds for the Muhammad Ali Centre, but also to revisit such a wonderful country and to all my friends and fans here.' Mrs Ali said: 'Muhammad's popularity in the UK is legendary and he has many friends here in the UK. We're looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and to garner support for Muhammad's charities.' A dispute over cash caused former militants to take over parts of the Bayelsa State government secretariat on Monday to protest what they called their abandonment by their erstwhile leader, known by the alias of General Boyloaf. The protesters said Mr. Boyloaf had pocketed for himself all the cash given by government to pacify militant activity in the area. They said they had each been promised N10 million in "disarmament allowance." Banking and other commercial activities were temporarily halted in Yenagoa, the state capital. The former warlords, chanting war songs, called for the heads of their various leaders, whom they blamed for being insensitive to their plight. Mr. Boyloaf, the former commander of the Bayelsa State wing of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), was one of the major militants who met with presidency officials recently in Abuja. Even though a similar protest was held last Friday, the repentant militants this time were more daring as they carried the protest to the Government House, leaving a trail of broken bottles and ruffled nerves in their wake. Officials of the military Joint Task Force watched the men, but did not intervene while the rioting lasted. But policemen drafted to the scene managed to pacify the men and eventually disperse them. Officials of the Bayelsa State government were not amused. If anything, the riot has shown up the politicisation of the amnesty efforts by top politicians in the state, as the state government is accusing the Honorary Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Timi Alaibe, of sabotaging the amnesty programmes in the state. Mr Alaibe, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Corporation(NDDC), however, said the state officials merely embarked on a propaganda war against him. Mr Alaibe, who was also leading another amnesty project, was accused of politicizing the programme at the detriment of the people in the state, most especially the collection of arms surrendered to him by a militant leader,Young Shall Grow, in Asusuama at the weekend. The Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Gideon Ekeuwei said most of the boys that took part in the protest that paralysed economic and commercial activities on Monday were the products of the disarmament that took place outside the state capital. Accusation of infiltration He accused Mr. Alaibe of going to Asusuama last Friday without informing the state government as well as any of the security agents in the state. He said the same set of boys that Mr. Alaibe claimed to have been disarmed were incited against the government. "This is nothing but a slight on the part of the government," he said. "Why all this infiltration, all in the name of politics? Why gambling with the lives of the people. Whoever went to Asusuama knows whom he has gone there to represent." Young Shall Grow, along with over 350 members of his group, at the weekend in Asusuama, Southern Ijaw local government area of the state, surrendered their arms to Mr. Alaibe; but the Mr Ekeuwei said the government has no record of such arms and ammunition. He said he was surprised to learn that the arms collected by Mr Alaibe were taken to Elele, in Rivers state. When NEXT contacted Mr. Alaibe for his reaction, he sent a three word text message: "Stupid political distraction." However, even though Mr Ekeuwei claimed that the protest was politically motivated, the protesters blamed the government and their leaders for reneging on their promises, most especially the payment of N10m disarmament allowance. The ex-militants said if their grievances were not looked into, they would make the state ungovernable for the government. Similar protest took place last Friday, before the Asusuama disarmament, where over 200 youth took to the streets demanding for the N10m allowance they said was promised by their leader before they agreed to disarm. |
