Egbunaogo: Herbal remedies have their "possible" benefits as they were used by our ancestors for millenia. However, they are not standardized, and the practice of those who prescribe them is not regulated as orthodox doctors are regulated by both MDCN and NAFDAC.
Herbal medicines are apparently beneficial for many ailments but have unintended consequences such as stomach ulcers or even kidney failure. So beware- while an herbal remedy might help with heart burn, it may put you in the hoospital for something else.
Read this interesting post on the role of herbal medicines in causing kidney failure in Nigeria here. http://kidneysolutions./2014/04/13/upcoming-blog-post-may-2014-environmental-causes-of-kidney-disease-and-failure-in-nigeria-a-big-public-health-problem/.
There are many other environmental and occupational causes of kidney failure but the section in this post on traditional herbal remedies is very relevant to the discussion here.
Hope this helps. yh ds helps...d most dreaded consequence is kidney failure...hope pple will nt to be takin all herbs indiscriminately |

Drabrah:
Well, I'm responding 2 ur comment simply cos I used 2 av same notion as u til I gat 2 know some basic concepts behind d disparity. As an undergrad of d berra by 4 uni, I remember in my 1st yr, I saw a news report of UI graduating abt 57 1st class(if I can remember) wen my sch gat use 'diplomacy' 2 reduce 1st class to abt 3 or 4. I remember back then, som depts gat multiply GPs wt decimals 2 reduce pass rate, I remember some 1st class were imposed on d dept by external examiners & d lyk. Nw Unilorin awards above 50 1st class I think (I may b wrong tho) cos dia r more faculties, depts & profs. Well, summary is, if u're in a less priv8 or 'not so advantageously positioned uni' u gat work more 2 enjoy equal (or even less benefits), jst lyk colleagues in UCH always say they've gat no tym 2 read buh all wot we read in books, they see dem live & dat places dem @ advantage. here i am in UCH...U ar right sir probably |

prince3009: My mum received a call this morning while lying on her sick bed, it was someone who claimed to be an FRSC official. He claimed that there was someone involved in a ghastly motor accident whom she (my mum) knew and that she should call back...i was already all set for work so i decided to call the number. When i did, the "FRSC" man asked where i was and i told him i was in Abuja. He then said that there was a ghastly motor accident which occurred along the Lokoja/Abuja road and a woman whom we supposedly know was involved.
He said he got my mum's number from the woman's phone and that though she is alive, she is in a very critical condition. According to him, the 3 people sitting down beside her died on the spot and the woman needed urgent medical attention. He further inquired if i knew any Red Cross number and i said no. I told him to simply use the woman's number to call me so that i would be able to ascertain her identity by tallying it with the contacts on my mum's phone or mine so we could know if she was a close relative but he responded by saying that there was no credit in the woman's phone and that he tried the "Call Me Back" method which did not work. He finally broke the camel's back by saying i should send MTN Recharge Card of about N400 to him so he could load the phone and call me back with it. I told him that i would send him just N100 but he insisted it must be N400 or at least N200. That was when it dawned on me. I was so upset cos my mum is a High BP and Diabetic patient which culminated to a stroke months back and was still recovering in my house only for them to spring this up on her. I managed to calm both her and my younger sister down by telling them it was a prank call from a scammer and related my reasons to them.
If you are reading this and got a similar call, please share your experience and for those who have not, be wary...IT IS A CHEAP SCAM! cheap scam indeed! so sorry abt ur mum's conditn...d supportive mgt has to be good na ooo so dat she will regain maximum fxn...well done for takin good care of her |

gbadexy: I've been following this thread and I did the little. I could and called the attention of my brother to it. However that is not the reason for the post, I would first of all like to really appreciate the good people here. There are many that really impressed and inspires me but I can't list name here but I have highest regards to them. I only wish I could meet and know such people that are selfless and sacrifice time and resources. I would also like to use this medium to draw attention to the possible danger of consuming local herbs. I bought some local herb called "agunmu' and took it with hot tea some months back and I started perceiving urea on my breath faintly for the next two days. I was able to observe because I've read an account of a man on watchtowers magazine that had kidney failure and organ transplant and it was part of his first observation during the ailment. So I was alerted and observed my urine also. Luckily, it stopped and I've never had such experience again. Now, someone that doesn't have an idea what such symptom means won't even pay serious attention to it and continue taking the herb. I'm no medical expert but I fear it may have put a strain on the kidney causing inability to remove urea from the blood fast. People take herbs indiscriminately and some may contain some harmful chemicals or toxins that may not have immediate effect but gradual damaging effect with continued usage. u've said nothin bt d truth....infact there is somtin called chinese herb nephropathy in medicine which arose frm some past research....it means herbs causin kidney damage altho no study has bn done as regards dat in ds area bt im sure some of d herbs will contain nephrotoxic substs....and d most unfortunate thing is that most of d nephropathies wont show any symptom untill a great deal of damage has bn done except someone who is very observant bt a simple BP check or a dip stick urine test can detect ontime...so d reason for once in a while check up.. A o ni se aare oooo. Im sorry if av derailed |

chioma134: Pls, I need links to the original thread so I can know exactly what happened and how the diagnosis was arrived at. Looking at this picture, looks to me more of a liver pathology than kidney disease. If kidney disease is involved, it's probably hepatorenal syndrome, and definitive treatment is liver transplantation. Instead of rushing him to a dialysis centre, I would suggest a proper assessment at LUTH or LASUTH to get a working diagnosis, then it can be taken up from there. My thoughts only. However, as I said earlier, these issues may have already been dealt with earlier on in the previous thread, so someone should please post the links. Thanks. yes ..its most likely hepatorenal syndr...btw i tot federal hosp ar on strike ..no work is goin on at all in UCH currently |
