Career / Re: I Need Advice On Career Change From Medicine To Management Consulting by Waliyllahi(m): 8:16am On Dec 27, 2016
KayTheHuman:
I just turned 26 and I'm completing my Housemanship (Internship) in less than a month.
Since I resumed Clinical years (400 Lvl and Up) in Medical School, I had lost my enthusiasm for Medicine and somehow knew that being excellent at Clinical practice was going to be difficult for me.
I graduated with average grades, and in the course of my internship, I've just been an average doctor.
I know I can easily get by with private practice as a Medical Officer, and make enough to live a basic life but living an exceptional life would be hard in Medicine.
I keep talking about being exceptional because that's the kind of life I want. I had all distinction in my O Levels, and was also in top 10 students in my class before the Clinical years.
I was involved in a number of extracurricular activities in school (from Digital Technology Projects to NGOs, etc.) some of which had significant national impact.

I had thought about options like starting a Technology Startup, or doing a Post-Graduate Degree in the Basic Medical Sciences.
But I've noticed that I like taking on big and ambitious projects, and I also easily get bored.(I don't enjoy working on a project for more than 6 months). This makes technology startup difficult, and a post graduate degree in Nigeria might also not be exciting enough to hold my attention.

I started considering Management Consulting after watching tons of McKinsey, Bain & BCG videos on youtube. It feels like a sweet spot between liking to improve your intellectual vitality, working on big ambitious projects that you can immediately start seeing the impact, and being boredom proof since there would be multiple projects at once. I've also not been satisfied with my education in Nigeria so far and I'm hoping to take an MBA top 5 Business School. Management Consulting seems like a reasonable stepping stone to that.

So overall, I'm wondering;
How easy would it be to get into consulting with an average Academic Record?
What other areas of assessment can I improve to increase my chances of getting an offer?
What are the peculiarities of Management Consulting in Nigeria? How are things different from the 'oyinbo' videos I've been watching on youtube?
What are the salaries like? What salaries can I expect as a Business Analyst?

I"ll appreciate your advice.
Thanks.
My case is very similar to yours. In fact, I have been following most of the management consulting firms since my my 500level days. Its my first month of housemanship now. But in my own case , I think my performance got better in clinical school (I graduated top 10% in my class of 180), which sometimes give me the feeling to just go ahead with clinical medicine.
I was involved in some extra curricular activities too, got the 1st runner-up award for the most enterprising medical student etc.
I feel we should just network. I have tried to do so through LinkedIn but wasn't a thorough one. And for McK, won't MB;BS be considered an advanced degree? So that one starts as an intern associate or associate. My mind is still open to so many other options as well and I believe things will take its due course. And as Auditorsplace said, I actually prefer being a corporate doctor to an hospital doctor which is why I'm also considering specialising in occupational medicine.
@maclatunji, I once contacted Jarus about the same issue, I don't think I got a reply.

PresidentT:

For a 3-yr post stroke what the patient needs is good rehabilitation. And you don't need to fly the patient abroad for this. The rehabilitation standard is similar across the globe. Ensure u get a neurologist and sound physiotherapist to monitor him. The services of other professional such as speech therapist might also be required. In all I honestly think the patient can be adequately managed here. The kind of care the patients receive at the acute phase (first 7 days) determines the outcome.
Cheers!

NB: I'll advice you against all these funny herb preparation as many of them can worsen other co-morbidities in the patient
U av d best advice here!

phantom:

Try and make a decision and fast. Weigh all options.
study hard and nail the professional exams(very well o!). competition is high especially in the US where doctors from other countries(particularly those indians wey i no know whether dem carry magnet for head) are also trying to get into the system.
I have a friend who smashed the USMLE(chick is very brilliant!Queens college to university of ibadan) and had 3 offers from different centers. She had to choose one.

Bottomline is study hard! Also know that certain specialties are difficult to get in the US......as a Nigerian, prepare to settle for internal medicine, family med or paediatrics.
I dont know what the UK situation is these days.

Make up your mind fast! consultants in Nigeria, employed primarily by the ministry of health(FMCs) start from 600k.Professors,800-1mill Doctors in the University system(employed primarily by the ministry of education),that lecture AND provide clinical services in the teaching hospitals earn a little less than their counterparts who work only in the hospital.

In the US you are looking at 150-500 grand PER ANNUM,depending on specialty. Great pay but you must also remember your taxes and malpractice issues.
so both options have their pros and cons. Make up your mind! cheers.
Thanks sooo much sir. I will heed ur advice. I think stayin bak in naija isnt too bad anyway wt d analysis. So much factors to consider. will further keep in touch.

@ phantom sir, u av done well creatin d thread, more power to ur elbow. Now, d dilemma of a final year med student: to stay or travel out, still very indecisive atm. My choice of specialty (not made up my mind abt this yet too) I believe will affect my decision anyway. I get fascinated by many specialties wen Im rotatin thru them makin it difficult to select a precise one for now, though I have completely ruled out some. I pray God shld jst guide my decisions.

Good day everyone. I'm a final year medical student of Uniben. I'm considering taking the PLAB exams. I've browsed through the the GMC website but still not clear about the process of registration, the total amount of money it will cost to register and write the exams and the materials I need to read. I know USMLE got a lot of videos and books to aid and guide your preparation. So I will really appreciate if anyone can clarify me on these areas.
Thanks
Hi, same situation here, final year @ UI. My previous thought was to finish internshp and perhaps service before starting to get into the process of travellin out. Though Im aware the USMLE can be written anytime even now. We can pls rub minds.

Australia is a bloody far place, almost on the far end of the world.
The Australian system is very disorganised for foreign doctors.
Part of the problem with Australia is getting the internship slot that is required to commence residency training. However, if you are willing to go into the remote/rural parts of Australia, then it may work for you. Nobody likes those regions because they are a long long way from the mainland where everybody lives and you have to battle hot temperatures, possible loneliness (no Naija peeps) and then gmyguy's spiders, snakes and walking lizards grin.

You'll need to scale you IELTS and AMC MCQ (approx A$2000) and then get the required visa

Currently though, there is no place to write the exam in Africa and many foreign doctors are even averse to practicing in Australia. The average Pakistani, Indian or Fillipino doctor wants to go to the US or Great Britain.. I'd even advise New Zealand over Australia, at least there are some successful Naija docs there.
[/color]

@Waliyllahi
Canada is worse than the UK and US when it comes to their allowance for foreign doctors to practice medicine. Even the UK can grant you locum spots where you will make a few pounds to keep body and soul together. In the US, foreign doctors join residency programs on the average of 7 out of 10 (this is specialty dependent) -all you have to do is pass your Steps on 1st attempt and you can get in.

Canada has a doctor shortage yet their doors are firmly closely. Some provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan are begining to open up poco a poco
