So, for those already filling their glasses with Alomo bitters, clinking their glasses to say a toast for the repose of the soul of the PDP, I am sorry to disappoint you but that Umbrella will not tear…at least not yet! I lived somewhere around Iyana Mortuary in Abeokuta at some point of my growing up. Not too far and too near from my house existed a family; a family more than the number of a football team, almost the size of a football Academy, a very noisy, rapturous and garrulous bunch who always engaged in mini-riots, major riots, brickbats and swearing competitions. ‘The Majiyagbes’, they were called. Everyone in the neighborhood knew about the Majiyagbes. Err, let me say almost everybody knew of their existence. And who wouldn’t? The Majiyagbes were very notorious for infighting. Every day, there was almost always something to fight about. The father was either fighting his wives collectively or individually, the wives were either fighting each other individually or engage in tag fighting (Fighting in pairs). The kids who were in the lightweight category were not to be left behind. Confusion always reigned supreme. Everybody was so sure that the family would disintegrate into at least 3 factions. But they did not. In spite of the constant and rabid infighting between them, threats of creating different factions or acts resembling creation of different factions, they did not split. Why was this? There was something very strong holding them together…something greater than the madness, or over-ambition of any of them. They always found a way to rally around themselves whenever the need arose. For those already preparing to pop Champagne, Alomo bitters, or Ogidiga over the ‘breaking’ of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I am sorry to disappoint you…You might have to wait to drink your Champagne or Alomo and you might get to never drink it. On Saturday, 31 August 2013 while the PDP convention was going on and Abuja was literally made to stand still, a group of losers who glaringly saw that they have/had lost out in the scheming of things in the PDP decided to go somewhere else and announce a faction of their own PDP. News filtered out that the PDP had broken up and our twitter warlords went into frenzy. To them, that is the end of the evil PDP. They reasoned aloud that with these developments, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will stroll leisurely into Aso Rock in 2015 while Mr Jonathan will go back to Otuoke and purchase a canoe so as to continue with the job of his forefathers; FISHING! However in this piece, I will attempt to take a rather incisive and cursory look at the situation of things in the PDP. How did things get so messy? What is Atiku’s grouse? How important is Atiku in the scheme of things? Can Atiku and the 7 Governors lead to the fall of the PDP? Do they have guts or as Don Vito Corleone said in the Godfather “Does he have balls”? These amidst others are some of the issues I will attempt to address in this piece. There is however a caveat: I will annoy many of you with this piece. In fact, I know I am annoying some of you already and you already wish you can lay your hands on me. However, if you are so angry with this piece, I expect 3 things from you: Write a rejoinder and join issues with me. Or go on twitter and rant about this useless boy who won’t join people in attacking the PDP If you do not have the intellectual wherewithal to write a rejoinder, you can copy Uncle Femi Fani-Kayode’s style by ‘hiring’ voltrons to fight on your behalf. Or you can vent your anger by smashing your laptop or phone or whatever you are reading this with. Having said that, I will now go ahead and distill some issues for determination. I will also attempt to ‘lift the veil’ behind the issues for determination and decipher Why these things are happening, Who will gain from this, Which person/persons should be blamed and How to solve the impasse. ISSUES 1. What is the Background of the problems in the PDP? 2. Who are those behind the new ‘PDP’ and what are their grouses? 3. How powerful and relevant is Atiku now? 4. Who gains most from this impasse? 5. Will the PDP fall apart as a result of this? 6. Who will be the greatest loser in all these? ISSUE 1 What is the background of the current problems in the PDP? It stems from the main fact that some people who had hitherto has unfettered access to the control of the PDP suddenly became outsiders. These group of people felt that because of the President’s perceived weakness, they will seize the party’s machinery from him and then make him to be at their mercy. However, the President isn’t as dumb as many believe. As a President who wants a second term, he knows the importance of taking charge of the party machinery. He took effective control of the major organs of the PDP namely a) National working Committee” and b) the “Board of Trustees” of the PDP. The fact that some of these people lost out in the power game is the cause of the imbroglio that is now playing out. ISSUE 2 Who are those behind the new faction of the PDP and what exactly is the grouse? What is the main motive behind their actions? Spearheading the renegades is washed politician and perennial political prostitute: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Others are the Governors of Rivers, Kwara, Adamawa, Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa and Niger States. With them is Olagusoye Oyinlola (Who has been crying since he was removed by a Court as PDP general- Secretary) and some other disgruntled but ambitious elements. What do they want? Just one thing- POWER! It is an open secret that Atiku wants the PDP Presidential ticket but he knows he cannot get it as long as GEJ contests against him. The same can be said of Sule Lamido of Jigawa who wants to run for President with Rotimi Amaechi as his running mate. Meanwhile, Rabiu Kwankwanso of Kano harbours the same ambition. Oyinlola has found himself consigned to the backdoor in the South West PDP and he earnestly wants to be ‘important’ again. To achieve their aims of getting ‘POWER’, these men decided that the best option is to form another political party (PDM) and also to form a splinter group of the PDP since they know they CANNOT wrestle control of the party from the President. Hence their decision to form a ‘parallel’ PDP which is an illegal association anyway! ISSUE 3 Since Atiku is the main person behind this new ‘PDP’ and also the new political party ‘PDP’, how powerful is he? Is he so powerful as to successful wrestle power from a sitting President? I am of the opinion that Atiku’s days as a politician are EFFECTIVELY OVER. He self-destructed the moment he started ‘tackling’ his boss, Olusegun Obasanjo when he was the Vice President because of his ambition to be President. This same Atiku left his party (PDP) and joined the Action Congress. When he got the ticket to fly the Action Congress’ flag as Presidential aspirant, Atiku suddenly developed diarrhea of the mouth and said many bad things against the PDP. He said he would rather die than join them again. Fast forward some years later, Atiku in ‘limpopo’ style limped back to the PDP, ate his vomit and even licked the ground. He went back begging the same PDP he called unprintable names. On his return, he probably looked at himself and said “I should be able to defeat that clueless and shoeless man from Otuoke for the PDP Presidential ticket”. Against all common sense and without shame, Atiku contested against GEJ. What happened afterwards can neither be called rape or consensual sex. GEJ beat daylight out of Atiku and Atiku was buried alive politically. He has lost all relevance in the Political circles but he has failed to realize it. It is even said in some circles that Atiku cannot win an election in his local government. I believe this conceited and delusional politician who lacks principles has no ‘powers’ neither does he have the ‘followership’ to give the PDP problems. ISSUE 4 With keen interest, I watched one of the Twitter champions analysing on Twitter yesterday. To him, the APC will gain from the ‘factionalization’ of the PDP. I refuse to agree. The Governors of the States who are part of the splinter groups are even Governors of the States the APC are relying on for votes. They will share the votes with the APC (votes from Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Zamfara) and leave GEJ’s PDP to take a clean sweep of the South East, South-South (INCLUDING RIVERS), some states in the South West (e.g Ondo, Oyo, Lagos), the Middle-Belt and some parts of the core North. Those thinking GEJ will suffer as a result of this ‘faction’ should think again and again. ISSUE 5 Will the PDP breakup? I don’t think so. Inspite of the ‘faction’, I still believe that the PDP is one. Those people that formed the Splinter PDP already registered the PDM some weeks ago. I do not see them as members of the PDP any longer, I only see them as people who want to make a little noise before they finally leave the PDP. Will the PDP miss the Governors? NO! One thing about the PDP that people overlook is that it goes beyond a single individual. The PDP has grown to become an institution which will outlive any person at all. I know that for every PDP Governor who wants to leave the party, there are tens of very powerful PDP people in the state who will ensure that the Governor’s impact is not felt. For every Kwankwanso in Kano, you have Ahmed Makarfi, for every Rotimi Amaechi, we have Austin Opara, Nyesom Wike, Peter Odili, Abiye Sekibo and a number of very powerful PDP stalwarts. The PDP is not a one man party unlike the APC which is reliant on Bola Tinubu. Those Governors will not be missed. ISSUE 6 Who is the biggest loser after all these? Atiku Abubakar?? Atiku is down already and he that is down needs fear no fall. The biggest loser is Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. He is allowing himself to be used as a pawn in the hands of the Northerners and he will be discarded when they no more need him or the strike a deal with the President. And by then, the EFCC will be waiting for him. WAY FORWARD I am of the opinion that the PDP umbrella is safe and that the 7 Governors leaving the PDP will not be missed. Like the Majiyagbe family, the PDP is a ‘coven’ and there is a very strong bond that ties the members together. It will take an effort from the Heavens before the party will split and become History. The over-ambition, over-bearing attitude or the delusion of some people will not be enough to break the PDP up. I also believe there is still time for those 7 Governors to make peace with the President. It is a good thing that all these is happening now. It gives the party time to mend fences before elections. So, for those already filling their glasses with Alomo bitters, clinking their glasses to say a toast for the repose of the soul of the PDP, I am sorry to disappoint you but that Umbrella will not tear…at least not yet! —————————– Ayokunle Odekunle , a Lagos-based lawyer tweets from @Oddy4real |
By Ogunjimi James Taiwo August 28th, 2013 by Larigold Ever since the All Progressives Congress (APC) was registered, we have been subjected to non-stop tales of a mystical democratic journey beginning in Nigeria. Admirers of the party chieftains, loyalists, and gullible Nigerians have bombarded us over and over again with tales of the inevitability of change in Nigeria because of the emergence of APC. On closer inspection of the constituents of APC and their antecedents, we see clearly that their words are not in tandem with their actions of the past and the actions of their current flag bearers. You see, when people realize the gullible nature of their audience, they spin tales knowing for a fact that their audience will swallow their lies hook, line and sinker. That is exactly the scenario between APC and the Nigerian populace. It is easy for Tinubu to start giving speeches today on a so-called democratic journey beginning in Nigeria, it is easy for him to lash out at past military leaders, but the question is what was his own ACTIVE (emphasis on the word ‘active’) role in enthroning this democracy? After the results of the June 12 1993 presidential elections were annulled, although Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which mobilized support for the restoration of democracy and recognition of the June 12results, less than a year after, he went into exile in 1994 and only returned to the country in 1998 after the death of Sani Abacha to benefit from the active struggle of true fighters for democracy. So when we hear tales of him championing the cause of democracy, we must ask if some clowns are trying to re-write history. When he was elected on AD ticket in 1999, he promised 10,000 housing units for the POOR (emphasis being on the word ‘poor’), but as of today in Lagos state, a Mega city for the rich is what is being delivered. The El-Rufai vs Buhari saga is another pointer to deception. An El-Rufai that had spoken so much about Buhari being unelectable and levelled so many allegations against him now sits at the same table with him in the same party and suddenly, everything seems to be ok. El-Rufai said Buhari is insensitive to Nigeria’s diversity and his focus is parochial. He claimed that in 1984, Buhari allowed 53 suitcases belonging to his ADC’s father to enter Nigeria unchecked at a time the country was exchanging old currency for new, that against all canons of legal decency, he used retroactive laws to execute three young men for drug-peddling after they were convicted by a military tribunal and not regular courts of law, that Buhari was so high handed that he gave himself and his officials immunity even from truthful reporting, that the obnoxious Decree 4, against which truth was no defence, was used to jail journalists and attempt to cow the media as a whole, etc. The question now is, have all those allegations suddenly been solved? Has Buhari stopped being parochial? Has his attitude to our diversity changed? Why did El-Rufai say all these? Was it for the sake of the country? If yes, what is our fate now when the same ‘whistle-blower’ now flocks with the man he warned us against? Another saga is the Tinubu vs Nuhu Ribadu issue. When Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was EFCC Chairman, he had a lot to say about Bola Tinubu. In September 27 2006, Ribadu claimed that Tinubu “is a looter with international dimension.” The same Ribadu went on to contest the Presidential election under the same party as Tinubu. Is that to say that he has suddenly been absolved of all ‘charges’? If the courts of law have covered it up, has the court of conscience in which Ribadu claims he has absolute belief cleared him? The mother of all deceits is the 8-point agenda released by the party. If you’ve seen deception in the past, this one beats it hands down. The manifesto is filled with plans that are in direct opposition to their antecedents and their current actions. APC promised to provide free education. I think that should go down as the joke of the year. In Lagos state, tuition fee was jerked up by over 300%, students pay as high as 400,000. A look at the post-utme exam written sends the message to us clearly. In some departments, only 3 people applied for admissions because of the hike in fees. In Ogun state, the early part of this year was filled with protests over the same issues of tuition fees. These lies just cannot be accepted; it’s an assault on our sensibilities. They promised accelerated economic growth. In APC states, is the economy growing? Are the masses happy? Are the states not in debt? When they talk about free health care, we need to ask them to explain. Is it in Ekiti, where patients carry standing fan to hospitals? Or the health care is so wonderful in Lagos that Asiwaju couldn’t have knee surgery there? See, we know that with the current political atmosphere in Nigeria, coupled with the gullible nature of an average Nigerian, the possibility is high that APC will win come 2015, but we are just asking them to stop insulting us by selling these crap to us. We refuse to believe in self-acclaimed change agents who have done nothing to change their immediate environment. We refuse to believe in change agents who have not settled the problem of corruption amongst them. And we definitely refuse to believe in Change agents who will sacrifice their gullible followers in a bid to lay their hands on their share of the national cake. I am saying that Nigerians must stand together to defend the Presidential institution. On his own part the President continues to take action to extend the frontiers of our freedom; His politics is clear cut and it is anchored on: deepening our democracy. A friend called me from Gboko, Benue State, insisting that we aides of President Jonathan must do more “to defend the President and the institution of the presidency”. Specifically he said that negative “words are used on a daily basis by desperate individuals who are out to capture power and destroy our country”. My dear brothers, sisters and friends here gathered in Mark Zukerbergs’ Stadium, I told my friend that though President Jonathan has no newspaper, radio or TV Station outlet of his own to defend himself and propagate his views without distortion, ordinary Nigerians will stand with and defend him when it matters most. The words my friend mentioned have been used to unjustly describe leaders around the world. Specifically I drew his attention to President Barrack Obama the first black to be president of the USA and his travails of “incompetence” “cluelessness” and “corruption”. I said it maybe because Jonathan is also a pioneer on account of him being the first minority from the South to become President! (quite an unexpected event that only God can explain). When you put yourself forward for service I reminded my friend, you become a target for all kinds of diatribes. My friend was not in the mood for excuses, “rambling and noise” he said and asked: “what has Obama got to do with the insults been heaped on our president?” I said to him quiet a bit! A quick Google search at 0.29seconds speed on “Clueless Obama” revealed a hit of fifteen million seven hundred thousand references (15,700,000); a search for “Incompetent Obama”, at 0.35seconds gives three million nine hundred thousand (3,900, 000) hits, while “corrupt Obama administration” will grant you a whooping fifty-four million, eight hundred thousand (54,800,000) hits. Now if you add the latest word in Nigerias’ political lexicon “Kindergarten” and do a search on “Kindergarten Obama” you will get Seven million eight hundred and forty thousand (7,840,000) hits at 0.25seconds! These are citizens of the most powerful nation on earth expressing themselves! As we expand the frontiers of our freedom and deepen our democracy, more of such high decibel negativism is to be expected. The result from Google on GEJ says that: two million one hundred and fifty thousand (2,150,000) hit by persons who allege or wrote on “corruption” dragging GEJ into the piece (compared to 54, 800, 000 against Obama); one hundred and seventy-six thousand (176,000) below the belt punch on our beloved President on “incompetence”, compared to (3,900,000 punches on Obama), Seventy-four thousand five hundred (74,500) slams on “clueless” (compared to 15,700,000 on Obama) and Eighty five thousand five hundred (85,500) knocks on “Kindergarten” GEJ (compared to 7,840,000 kindergarten Obama even though most refer to Obama visiting kindergarten schools!). I am saying that Nigerians must stand together to defend the Presidential institution. On his own part the President continues to take action to extend the frontiers of our freedom; His politics is clear cut and it is anchored on: deepening our democracy. He has “no enemies to fight”, All votes must count and that “one man one vote, one woman one vote and one youth, one vote” in addition to “a dialogue based inclusive approach to decision making”. The current diatribes to detract and distract GEJ from continuing the good work of building our economy through Agriculture, Aviation, Transportation, Energy Security, Trade and Investment, Education, Peace and concensus building etc, may have been designed to delay Nigeria’s forward march. His desire and commitment in delivering on critical infrastructure (rail, roads, airports, electricity etc) plus his abiding focus in strengthening our institutions especially, NHRC, INEC, EFCC, ICPC, NASS, etc. (no interference) is what will eventually count. The DNA of good governance can only be transferred from one government to the other and from one generation to another when governance institutions are allowed to grow strong and complement one another! ————————- Oronto Natei Douglas is the Presidential Adviser on Research, Strategy & Documentation. |

In a recent interview on an online channel TV360, the current Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi stated that President Jonathan and his wife were bent on removing him from office as Governor of Rivers State. See video here http://tv360nigeria.com/ tv30-exclusive-my-problems-with- president-jonathan-amaechi/ As indigenes of Rivers state and people who understand the origin and nature of the current crisis in Rivers State, We were in awe and were rudely shocked. We could not believe that the elected governor of our state and one who is supposed to be the political leader of the ruling party in Rivers state would denigrate himself to so lie during a recorded media interview. It was a shameful thing to watch and more than anything else, gave us another reason to add to many others that Amaechi was not fit to be a political leader who should have built the political skills to manage men and relationships. Even though many of us have known that his strategy was to rope-in the President and win cheap sympathy from a section of the media in the South-West and Lagos specifically, this direct affront on the President was clearly a no-brainer and a dirty below the belt hit which portrayed Rivers people in poor light as being run by a very flippant governor who does not think before he talks. We have listened to some of his colleagues such as Jigawa’s Sule Lamido and Ekiti’s Kayode Fayemi and none of them talks as recklessly as our Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Ekiti’s Kayode Fayemi is a lot more cultured, intellect founded and careful with words. Not so with the Governor from Rivers State who incidentally graduated with a degree in English Language from the University of Port Harcourt. We have heard Amaechi gave just too many reasons why he thinks the Presidency is fighting him. We have heard him say it is because he had previous disagreements with the President’s wife bordering on the demolition of certain waterfronts in Rivers State. We have also heard him say that it is because the President’s wife wants him to confer with her on certain state policies. We have also heard him say that it is because of his stance on establishment of the sovereign wealth fund. We have also heard him say that it is because of his stand of the over bloated fuel subsidy claims. We have also heard him say that it is because of his decision to run for NGF Governorship. Not done yet, we have also heard him say that it because the Presidency suspects that he intends to run for the Presidency or is Vice Presidency in 2015? How many reasons will Amaechi give on why he thinks the Presidency is fighting him? Curiously, in all his vicious and nauseous attempt to rope-in and incriminate the Presidency in the crisis in Rivers State through his very reckless rhetoric, we have never for once heard Governor Rotimi Amaechi explain to Rivers people or Nigerians why he is at war with his former Chief of Staff and now Minister of State for Education Chief Nyesom Wike. Rotimi Amaechi has cunningly and deliberately refused to tell Rivers people and Nigerians why there is lost love with his former confidant Nyesom Wike. Neither has he ever explained why Nyesom Wike is bent on bringing him down in spite of Nyesom Wike’s very loud and defiant media briefings where he has directly attacked Amaechi. The question is, why is Amaechi scared of hitting at Nyesom Wike? What is he afraid of? It was at a youth program in Ekiti state that Governor Amaechi said that Nigerians are too timid for a revolution and that the nation is almost in a dictatorship. How ironic. Are Rivers people also too timid for a revolution? Does he think that Rivers people are happy about the tens of billions of naira wasted so far on the proposed Rivers Mega Hospital which is yet to get off the ground? Does he think that Rivers people are happy about the fact that a project which was supposed to be a (Public-Private- Partnership) PPP project has suddenly become a contract awarded to the supposed PPP partner Clinotech Canada? Does Governor Amaechi think that Rivers people are happy about the more than N20 bn already spent on the Rivers Monorail for a less than 5 km stretch and just pillars to show thus far? Aren’t these good enough reasons for Rivers people to begin a revolution? How many people know that the initial PPP partner for the monorail project, a company called STI Group and facilitated by a former Governor of Rivers State General Anthony Ukpo had chickened out of the project because they felt Rivers State was not yet ready for that kind of heavy financial drag down and the existing support infrastructure constraints? More than 90 per cent of internal roads in Port Harcourt are at various stages of hopeless disrepair. From Mile One Diobu to Mile Two to Mile Three and then Old GRA and even the New GRA are over burdened with bad internal roads even though billions of naira had been previously budgeted for these roads. Isn’t this a good enough reason for Rivers people to begin a revolution against Governor Amaechi’s government? Whatever happened to the hundreds of millions earmarked for the Operation Zero Pothole Project? Did Amaechi punish the Commissioner of Works who was responsible for such a scam? No. Instead, the Commissioner was sent to the house of representatives where he is now House Chairman overseeing the Downstream Commitee. Infact, Governor Amaechi had himself told a group of clergymen at the Royal House of Grace Church or so that the Operation Zero Pothole was used as an opportunity by some to embezzle money. The question again is, did he punish those who were responsible? Again, NO. Visitors to Port Harcourt have seen some fancy model school buildings strategically located at visible parts of Port Harcourt township. They look very good. They were built at the cost of One hundred and twenty (120) million naira each and there is one in almost each community in Rivers State. The truth is that apart from those in Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs such as Tai & Eleme, the others (in the hinterlands) are at varying levels of decay and abandonment. Some have been abandoned while others were improperly completed and left to decay. Some have even been overrun by grasses and bushed. I am sure the people in these communities are a little too timid else they would have begun their own revolution by now. At the Ekiti Program, Governor Amaechi also used the opportunity to tag the Jonathan administration as some sort of dictatorship. Some of us find that funny coming from a character such as Governor Amaechi. It was Governor Amaechi who suspended local government chairmen because they were having a meeting with someone who he considered his opponent. It was Governor Amaechi who revoked the Certificate of Occupancy of buildings that he perceived were being used by opposition elements for meetings in Rivers State. It was Governor Amaechi who suspended a local government chairman for being loyal to the Minister of State for Education. So how can an Amaechi call a Jonathan a dictator? It beats us. We have other questions. Infact too many to list out here. Was it President Jonathan or his wife that caused Amaechi to fall out with his former confidant and Chief of Staff? Was it President Jonathan or his wife that caused Amaechi to be at war with many of the elders and key stakeholders of Rivers State PDP? If the President is behind the crisis in Rivers State, would he have just five (5) house members behind him? We believe that Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi have set out to gravely undermine the office and person of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and this is not a good thing. It is not in the nature and tradition of Rivers people to disrespect, undermine or malign those who have set to provide leadership over us and if Governor does not retrace his step and apologise to the President immediately, we will have no choice but to mobilise Rivers youths to publicly disrespect, undermine and disgrace him. The truth is, time will tell IF Amaechi is his own worst enemy. LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Personnel records of former and current members of Nigeria's top domestic spy agency, including home addresses and names of immediate family members, leaked onto the Internet in a threatening message that claimed to come from a radical Islamist sect that's killed hundreds of people this year alone, The Associated Press has learned. The leak of personal data of more than 60 past and current employees of Nigeria's State Security Service remained easily accessible on the Internet for days and had details about the agency's director-general, including his mobile phone number, bank account particulars and contact information for his son. Many of agents listed who could be reached by the AP said they received no official warning from the spy agency that their information had been posted online nor been otherwise alerted. The material has been deleted from the comment section of a website, but the security breach astonished veterans and calls into question whether Nigeria's intelligence community, whose agents already have released suspected terrorists out of religious and ethnic sympathies, are too compromised from within to stop the violence now plaguing Africa's most populous nation. "This is a national embarrassment," said one Nigerian intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as information about the leak was not to have been made public. Marilyn Ogar, a spokeswoman for the State Security Service, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday about the leak. The State Security Service, created in 1986 by then-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, monitors domestic dissent in Nigeria, an oil-rich nation of more than 160 million people. Though geared toward stopping terrorism and destabilizing coups, the agency routinely faces criticism for targeting government critics. In Abuja, Nigeria's capital, the agency operates out of cars made to look like the many green taxis that roam the streets. Plain-clothed agents of the service routinely question foreign journalists at airports, border crossings and on city streets if they see reporters conducting interviews. Agents carrying assault rifles often guard major events in the country. Many agents for the typically secretive agency are preoccupied with concealing their identities, as most try to blend unnoticed into society. The information leak came in two postings earlier this month on a website that provides rewritten news on Nigeria. The first posting threatened to kill agents of the State Security Service on behalf of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect responsible for more than 660 killings this year alone in Nigeria. The second posting simply offered a block of text containing biographical and other details about the agents. Though the comments have been removed, the AP is not identifying the website involved as cached versions of the comments remain online and intelligence service agents have been killed by Boko Haram members in the past. The list includes former and current agents across the country, including Director-General Ekpeyong Ita. Those reached by the AP who were willing to talk expressed disbelief that sensitive information like that could make its way to the Internet. "I was shocked to see my details posted on the Internet," said one former agent, who declined to be named out of safety concerns. "I've not heard anything from anybody. I was surprised that such information could be leaked." Another man on the list said he simply once served as a doctor to help the agency on an on-call basis only. The list appeared to include lower-ranking agents, as well as one-time state directors for the agency. Some of those contacted suggested that the list appeared to come from the agency's pension department, as it mostly included retirees and listed bank account information for nearly all those named. The release of the information comes as Nigeria's intelligence agencies have made a series of blunders in trying to fight Boko Haram in Africa's most populous country, with some likely influenced by ethnic or religious sentiments. Intelligence agencies allegedly released a suspected Islamic radical in 2007 who later masterminded Boko Haram's suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in August 2011 that killed at least 25 people and wounded more than 100 others, officials previously told the AP. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable also show U.S. officials complained in 2008 about Nigeria's government quietly releasing other suspects into the custody of Islamic leaders as part of a program it called "Perception Management." Another U.S. diplomatic cable complains that State Security Service agents nearly let a suspected bomb maker trained by the Somali terror group al-Shabab onto an international flight, despite an Interpol notice for his arrest. The agents who allegedly tried to release Mohamed Ibrahim Ahmed "not only knew about the Interpol notice, but simply said they did not want to hold him any longer," the February 2010 cable read. Ahmed, an Eritrean, pleaded guilty to charges in June in a U.S. federal court that he supported terrorism by associating with al-Shabab, a terror group with links to al-Qaida. He faces up to 10 years in prison. Most of those on the leaked list of agents reached by the AP said no one from the federal government or the spy agency warned them that their personnel information had appeared on the Internet. Instead, colleagues and other former agents called each other to spread the news and later contacted the State Security Service themselves to report the breach. It is unclear if the person who posted the information online really does have ties to Boko Haram, which has targeted security officials in the past. Violence has been centered mostly in the country's Muslim north. One retired agent who spoke to AP said he was grateful he lives in the largely Christian south, away from the sect's attacks. "It's worrying that they have access to that," the agent said. "Those living in Abuja (and the north) are the ones who should living in fear." ___ Bashir Adigun reported from Abuja, Nigeria. Associated Press writer Yinka Ibukun contributed to this report.

Abuja— Possible reasons why the north appears to be angry with President Goodluck Jonathan emerged, yesterday, with a revelation by the President of the Arewa Youth Forum, Gambo Gujungu, that the north has been marginalised by the government. Speaking exclusively with Vanguard, Gujungu maintained that they would no longer tolerate the continued exclusion of the region from major government development and empowerment programmes, which appear to have been skewed in favour of the Niger Delta. Beyond that, the youth leader described as unacceptable the growing poverty and underdevelopment in the North that have given rise to anger and violence, thereby stalling the economy of the region with the Federal Government doing little or nothing about it. The Arewa leader said: “We are really angry with this government because we feel marginalised in its scheme of things. “We are all Nigerians who should be treated fairly and equally by the government but a certain section of this government has been adequately taken care of while the rest languish in abject poverty.” He said the lopsided distribution of amenities and opportunities has given the impression that the Presidency is catering for a certain ethnic group in the country to the detriment of the rest. vanguard. |

The solution to nigeria's problem is to practice real fiscal federalism where the resources in the domain of a state belongs to the state and the state have more powers patterned like the USA which we claim to be copying, let ♏ε̲̣̣̣̥ see how some states will be eyeing others resources and not work for thiers instead of waiting for month end to share money from abuja and go black to sleep. |

The Presidency on Wednesday refuted a report that it purchased 200 exotic cars for the African First Ladies Summit which formally opens in Abuja on Thursday. In a statement by Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency said the report in a national newspaper (not PUNCH) was not correct. It said, “The true facts of the matter are as follows: “The African First Ladies Peace Mission which is holding its summit in Abuja is a Non-Governmental Organisation. “Its activities are funded by stakeholders and members of the private sector who support and identify with its objectives. “In accordance with its modus operandi, the AFLPM set up several committees, including a finance committee to raise funds and sponsorship for the organisation of its Abuja Summit. “As part of its own contributions to the successful hosting of the summit by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, Coscharis Motors Ltd. offered to provide some cars for the event at no cost to the organisers or the Federal Government of Nigeria. “Under an agreement signed by the committee and Coscharis Motors, all the cars will be returned to the company after the summit. “As indicated in the body of the report, the editors of Daily Trust were apparently well aware that they had no facts to support the claim in their banner headline that the Federal Government bought the cars in question. “Daily Trust admits in the report that it could not confirm if the cars were ‘bought outright or hired’ yet it went ahead to publish the totally unsubstantiated headline claim – “FG buys 200 cars for first ladies summit.” http:///PnOsBj |

Assuming it was a PDP state the likes of elfufai, omojuwa etc could have be awashed with rants on the social media.why haven't lai mohammed issued a statement to condemn such as he always does. |
