Nairaland / General / Ozekhome Has Asked Amina Zakari To Resign Or Be Sacked by WatchdogNews: 9:40am On Aug 24, 2015
His call followed speculations that President Muhammadu Buhari may make her substantive head of the commission.

Zakari, who was National Commissioner at INEC, replaced Prof. Attahiru Jega, whose five-year tenure as the INEC chairman ended on June 30.

Ozekhome in a chat with Sunday Punch said Zakari should resign or be dismissed.

According to him, her credibility as acting INEC chairman should be called to question by law and based on the allegations brought against her.

“The Constitution only allows for a substantive chairman of INEC, never an acting one. Whether or not Mrs. Zakari is PMB’s (Buhari’s) in-law, the fact that her bona fides for the job, her credibility, impartiality and independence in handling the job have been vigorously questioned are sufficient reasons for her to resign honourably, or get sacked by PMB.

“What helped Jega at the most critical of times was the general public perception that he was not compromised. The doubts already raised about Mrs. Zakari can never make her deliver credible, free, fair and acceptable elections.

“She had better save the nation another round of unnecessary tension and recriminations. We have already had too much of that, in tons. She will be morally challenged and ethically unstable in effecting credible deliverables,” he added.

Politics / Tribunal In Delta State Dismisses Okowa’s Bid To Stop INEC Evidence by WatchdogNews: 4:45pm On Aug 22, 2015
Election Petition Tribunal of the last governorship elections in Delta state, sitting in Asaba, has dismissed the prayer of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from giving oral evidence before the election panel.

Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor, who was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the April 11 poll, is contesting the declaration of Okowa, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the poll, by INEC, as the winner of the governorship election.

Okowa, who is the first respondent, his party, the PDP, and INEC have moved three motions before the tribunal, seeking to stop the electoral umpire from giving oral evidence, aside tendering documents relating to the poll.

The Justice N.U. Gunmi-led three-member tribunal had, on August 12, 2015, issued a subpoena to the Head of ICT Department in INEC and INEC to appear before the tribunal to give evidence as requested by Emerhor and the APC, who are the petitioners.

Counsel for Okowa, Alex Iziyon(SAN), the lawyer representing the PDP, Mr. A.T. Kehinde(SAN), and D.D. Dodo, who is the counsel for INEC, had objected to the subpoena and the official giving oral evidence before the panel.

In three motions before the tribunal, the respondents had argued that the petitioners were looking for a way of bringing in additional witnesses, which were not pleaded in their petitions, a move that would contravene an earlier ruling of the tribunal on August 5.

Kehinde, who is the counsel for the PDP, had said the petitioners’ prayer was “a surreptitious way of bringing in additional witnesses, which would be contrary or set aside the ruling of the tribunal on August 5, which refused the petitioners’ application to bring in additional witnesses”.

Counsel for the APC and Emerhor, Mr. Thompson Okpoko(SAN), had argued before the tribunal that the objection of Iziyon and Kehinde amounted to “crying more than the bereaved”, as the subpoena was not issued to either Okowa or the PDP.

Ruling on the three motions on Friday, Justice Gunmi agreed with Okpoko that the subpoena to the INEC was not the business of Okowa or the PDP.

“The first respondent (Okowa) and second respondent (PDP) were not served the subpoena and have no right to complain about and cannot dictate which witnesses to call to prove their case,” the judge added.

In dismissing Okowa’s motions, the tribunal chairman said the subpoena issued to INEC was for the concerned official to give both oral evidence and tender relevant documents before the panel.

“The sum total of what we have been saying is that the respondents/applicants have not shown any good reason why the subpoena issued on the 12th of August in this petition should be set aside. They have not shown that it was issued without jurisdiction.

Politics / Amaechi Claims He Left N10bn In State Treasury; Governor Wike Refutes Claims by WatchdogNews: 12:00pm On Aug 21, 2015
Immediate past Governor of River state, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that he a left the sum of N8- N10 billion in the state treasury for his successor, Governor Nyesom Wike.

The claims were made known in a statement from his media office yesterday August 20th 2015 where he denied that he handed over an empty treasury to his successor.

According to the statement, a total of N7.5 billion cash was left behind as balances in the State Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) account with Skye Bank, FAAC account with Zenith Bank, balances with Access Bank and funds in the State reserve fund account in First Bank.
“This is besides other balances in the state Government House account with Zenith Bank and other government MDA accounts, like the Bureau for Public Procurement, BPP. By the time you pull all these together, we are looking at readily available cash in the region of eight to ten billion naira left for the Wike administration,” the statement read.

“It’s also pertinent to point out here that former governor Amaechi also left economic assets worth tens of billions of naira for the state. Just like cash, the assets store value. These assets that are scattered in diverse sectors of the economy were developed or built or procured with revenue that accrued to the state during Amaechi’s tenure. The assets belong to Rivers State, not Amaechi. Some of these assets are presently yielding revenue to the state coffers, and many can be easily and readily converted to cash, if the State so desires.

“It is therefore disingenuous and fraudulent for Wike to claim that Amaechi left an empty treasury in his bid to justify the N30 billion loans he collected under 30 days in office. Rather than this puerile and silly distraction of always pointing accusing fingers at Amaechi, Wike should come out to explain to Rivers people what he took the loans for, account for and justify every kobo that has been spent from the loans,” the statement concluded.

Politics / Reps Call On Federal Government To Rehabilitate Bad Roads by WatchdogNews: 11:39am On Aug 15, 2015
The federal government has been called upon by the House of Representatives, to immediately commence palliative measure to rehabilitate the bad portions of the Ikorodu-Shagamu and Ikorodu-Ijebu Ode roads.

The call was made in a motion moved by Barrister Jimi Benson (APC – Ikorodu federal constituency) which was unanimously adopted. Benson said that the roads are in a pitiable condition and that motorists were passing through harrowing experience.

The lawmaker said that the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had abandoned the two inter-state roads in spite of several efforts to get the federal government to hearken to the yearnings of millions of road users over the years.

He said that most sections of the international highways were failing thereby creating hurdles and gully-like potholes at various sections of the road. The legislator noted that the situation had resulted to vehicular break down, traffic gridlock and encourages driving against traffic which has brought untold hardships on car owners and commuters.

According to Benson, “the Ikorodu-Shagamu and Ikorodu-Itokin-Ijebu-Ode highways connecting Lagos and Ogun State from two different angles are vital trunk ‘A’ roads that are of vital economic importance to the citizens of the two states in particular, and Nigerians who occasionally ply the roads in general.

Politics / Gov Lalong Tells Jang – ‘you Have Two Weeks To Return Stolen Money by WatchdogNews: 2:57pm On Aug 12, 2015
Governor Simon Lalong, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, received the report of the 12-man transition committee on Tuesday in Jos where the committee accused Former Governor Jonah Jang of misappropriation of funds. Governor Lalong has now given a grace period of two weeks to Former Governor of the state Jonah Jang and his administration to return all the money that the administration stole or face the wrath of the law.

Jonah Jang – Former Governor of Plateau State

Governor Lalong said “In line with the advice of President Muhammadu Buhari, who urge past government officials to return stolen public funds in their procession, I am giving two weeks to government officials in our state to return monies taken illegally, even before government begins the implementation of the recommendations of the committee”

Governor Lalong also revealed that his administration got only two official cars from his predecessor.

The committee, led by Deputy Governor Sonni Tyoden, had while submitting its report, claimed that the Jang administration incurred a debt of N222.3 billion, and, in a lopsided way, concentrated major projects in a particularly section of the state.

“Records show that between May 2007 and May 2015, the sum of N525.35 billion was the total income accruing to the State, statutory allocations inclusive, but the state was left with a debt of N222.3 billion by May, 2015,” the panel said.

“In other words, the sum of N747.65 billion could be said to have been expended on Plateau State citizens in the last eight years. Looking at the state in its current condition, we are at a loss where all this money went to.”

The committee said some individuals in the Jang administration became lords over others.

“There was an individual who was a jack of all trades, who appropriated three titles to himself, each conveying separate and identifiable functions. He was a “Statistician-General”, a “Salary Administrator” and a “General Manager” all at the same time,” the committee said.

Receiving the report, Governor Lalong pledged to fully implement the recommendations of the committee.

“Government will, without delay, study and commence the implementation of the recommendation of the committee with a view to repositioning government for the important task of delivering on the mandate given to her,” the governor said.

“We will make available to the people of the state details of the committee findings so as to guard against misrepresentation of facts and mischief makers who will want to confuse the general public on the work of this committee.”

“May I also state for the purpose of emphasis that the expectation of the people on composition of EXCO and other necessary ministerial restructuring would be addressed in line with the recommendation of the transition committee.”

He said all those said to have milked the state dry would not be left unpunished.

According to the committee, a lot of irregularities were carried out by the immediate past government of the state.

“The committee encountered many instances of wanton irregular and doubtful expenditure, misapplication of funds and disregard for laid down known financial rules and regulations,” Mr. Tyoden said.

He alleged that impunity, nepotism, sectionalism were defining characteristics of the Jang administration

“From our findings, we wish to observe that while governance between 2007 and 2011 can be said to have been conducted along familiar lines, with some semblance of respect for known rules of procedure and civilized democratic governance, after 2011, there was a sharp decline and the descent of governance to the level of bestiality, where impunity, nepotism, sectionalism became the order of the day.”

The committee faulted what it called lopsidedness in allocation and spread of projects in the state.

“Even in the area of infrastructural development and road construction in particular, where some appreciable impact could be said to have been achieved, one cannot but be struck by the lopsidedness and selective distribution of such facilities and services, as 80 percent of such projects were located in a particular section of one senatorial district.”

Some guests interviewed at the venue of the event urged government to fish out and punish individuals found to have been involved in the alleged theft of public funds, including those who have now found their way into the current administration of the state.

Politics / PDP: Musa Daura Is A Card-carrying Member Of The APC by WatchdogNews: 2:53pm On Jul 30, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday alleged that the Director General of the Department of State Security (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, is a card-carrying member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party at the end of deliberations at National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja, drew the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to what it said was a disturbing development in the polity which includes “the unwarranted intrusion of some over-zealous security operatives on issues bordering purely on politics and the issue of the appointment of Mrs. Amina Zakari as acting Chairman of INEC.”

Addressing journalists shortly after the NWC meeting, the acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, said there had been continued intimidation, harassment as well as the hounding, arrest and detention of electoral officers and members of election tribunals by operatives of the DSS in Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and other PDP states.

“The NWC notes that this unfortunate development has been the case since the appointment of the new Director General of the DSS, Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, whom we learnt was a critical intelligence stakeholder of the APC as a card-carrying member of that party during the campaigns.

This is ungodly and unacceptable,” he said.

Secondus said the PDP leadership has thoroughly considered a number of very important issues pertaining to the state of affairs in our nation.

Politics / Governor Wike Intervenes: Releases N712 Million For Stranded Students Overseas by WatchdogNews: 11:29am On Jul 29, 2015
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has ordered the immediate release of the sum of N712 million for students who were sent overseas to study under the Rivers state sustainable development agency and are now reportedly stranded due to failure to settle debts of fees, accommodation, etc.

A statement was issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah. The statement said…

“All entreaties by the stranded students and their parents to RSSDA and Amaechi fell on deaf ears as the students stood the risk of being disallowed to sit for their final exams”.

Inko-Tariah, however, said that parents of the final year students in tertiary institutions abroad could now heave a sigh of relief, as respite had come their way.

He said, “Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, ordered the immediate payment of the sum of N512million to offset the debts owed by the final year students to enable them sit for their final exams and eventually graduate.

“The governor had earlier on paid the sum of N200 million as part of the money owed by the students, which brings the total sum paid by Wike’s administration to N712million.

The statement made yesterday further noted that Governor Wike’s gesture elicited reactions “from many who praised him for being sensitive to the plight of the students and their parents.

“Respondents described the act as not just securing the future of the students, but also that of the state since they are the future leaders”, it added.

Politics / Analysis: Buhari’s First 50 Days In Office by WatchdogNews: 12:33pm On Jul 25, 2015
Few politicians have polarized this country like President Muhammadu Buhari. The last election was a keenly fought contest between two extremes: the excesses of youth vs. the wisdom of old age; continuity of the old system vs. an abrupt restart for the new; the patient solider vs. the erudite teacher. In what many consider the fairest election yet, President Buhari emerged the winner of the keenly contested election.

His win not only guaranteed that he would become the first candidate to unseat an incumbent president, it also ensured that his every action would come under scrutiny. Observers have done everything from writing pieces, conducting interviews, to even setting up an ingenious Buharimeter—an online site dedicated to monitoring his tenure as president weighed against the promises he made during his campaign.

Expectations are high—maybe a little too high. President Buhari marked his 50th day in office by embarking on an official visit to the US. Just how well has he performed in the last 50 days.

Settling into Office:

President Buhari has (unsurprisingly) taken a lot of hit from PDP loyalist for the speed in which he has set up his cabinet. However, in taking his time to assess the situation, the president is actually making the right choice. It is not just a bold move. A smart move. One that might have benefited past administrations if the leaders had been wise enough to consider it. Patience in setting up a government is a virtue. Nigeria has been the recipient of far too many tepid band-aid appointments.

The news leaking out of the presidential office have been promising. There are suggestions that President is seriously considering the transition committee’s recommendation of trimming down the number of ministries from 42 to 19. The idea is to rid the government of redundant structures and allow for management that is more effective. Its a simple case of smart logic? Why have the EFCC and ICPC when you can only have one? Fewer ministers means that the government ends up spending less on wages. And Buhari’s decision to reduce his salary is a strong indicator that the newly appointed Ministers may end up earning a lot less than their predecessor.

More importantly, Buhari’s careful approach shows that he is not disillusioned as to the challenges that lie ahead. Here is a president who understands what is at stake and appears willing to do whatever is necessary to get the job done.

Grade: A-

Handling of the House of Assembly

When Buhari announced during his inauguration that he was for “everybody and for nobody” few people took him seriously. Many are now. In avoiding being tangled with the ongoing crisis of leadership within the House of Assembly, Buhari is showing surprising maturity above his political years.

Prior to the House’s election, Buhari had said that he was willing to work with whoever emerged as leader of the Senate or House of Representative, explaing that he had no preferred candidate. And while he would have preferred that the current leaders had “..emerged through the process established by the party,” the president has done little to undermine their new positions—something rare within the upper echelons of Nigeria’s political structure. Through all the bickering—and outright hitting—that has gone on within the House of Assembly, President Buhari has kept himself impressively distant but continually relevant—a hard balance but one that he has successfully pulled off.

Grade: A

Fight Against Corruption

Buhari’s stance against corruption is no secret. He dislikes it. Hates it. Abhors it. Detests it. And plans to permanently kill it. His ruthless, unapologetic crusade against corruption is what probably cost him his last couple of elections, and yet ironically, it is that same stance that ensured that he was all-but-swept into office by the nation.

Voters who had expected that Buhari would start his tenure by immediately throwing people behind bars may be disenchanted with the current lack of theater. But shrewder voters will undoubtedly be impressed—and guilty ones terrified—about how Buhari has undergone his quest to wipe out corruption. Again, it has all the traits of BabaGoSlow: slow, patient, and deliberate. The early weeks of the president’s administration were spent conducting a series of audits of the different ministries and federal departments. The exact results of those audits have yet to be announced but Buhari gave an early indication of what to expect, when he announced that current investigations have shown that many officials were involved in large scale oil thefts, with millions of dollars being stolen daily.

Speaking during a recent question session in Washington, he revealed “We are now looking for evidences of shipping some of our crude, their destinations and where and which accounts they were paid and in which country. When we get as much as we can get as soon as possible, we will approach those countries to freeze those accounts and go to court, prosecute those people and let the accounts be taken to Nigeria.”

“The amount of money is mind-burgling but we have started getting documents. We have started getting those documents. Whichever documents we are able to get and subsequently trace the sale of the crude or transfer of money from Ministries, Departments, Central Bank. We will ask for the cooperation of those countries to return those monies to federation accounts and we will use those documents to arrest those people and prosecute them. This, I promise Nigerians.”

Grade A+

President Buhari is widely recognized for his championed course against corruption. He has promised to pursue justice regardless of it falls within party lines. “I am for everybody and nobody.”

On Nigeria’s Security

Buhari’s first order as Commander in Chief of the Armed forces was to move the command center to Maiduguri, Borno. It was a brilliant move. It not only signaled the clear intent of his government, but did a lot to settle the fears of many Nigerians, who hitherto the announcement still held on to absurd pre-election propaganda that Boko Haram was secretly being funded by Buhari. Moving the command structure, also gave more teeth to the proposed coalition with Nigeria’s neighbors—primarily Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.

Buhari’s actions thereafter—on the subject of battling the Islamic insurgency–have been nearly flawless: he has accelerated plans to improve the military, consolidated Nigeria’s strategic partnership with the US, and initiated efforts to boost the development of the war-ravaged North East in the form of a $2.1 Billion World bank loan. Despite this though, his first 50 days has been characterized by a spike in violence, with hundreds of people killed over the last two months. Buhari may have inherited the problem, but the buck ends at his desk.

Grade C+

Politics / PDP Support Buhari’s Anti-corruption Crusade by WatchdogNews: 4:08pm On Jul 24, 2015
Chief Oliseh Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of the People Democratic Party on Thursday, said the Party was in support of the anti-corruption crusade by the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He described corruption as a crime against the Nigerian people and the country’s constitution.

Metuh had while addressing PDP stakeholders in Lokoja on Tuesday accused Buhari of treating PDP members, especially the officials of the past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as criminals and prisoners of war because of the ongoing probes.

But speaking during the Kogi State congress election in Lokoja on Thursday, Metuh, who was the state congress chairman, said PDP was in support of any move that would check corruption in the country.

He added that the party was in support of Buhari’s anti-corruption stance.

He stated that as long as the hands of PDP members were clean, they had nothing to fear in the ongoing war against graft in the country.

The PDP spokesperson said the party would not protect any of its member found to have been corrupt.

According to him, it has become necessary for public officials to be held accountable for their actions.

Metuh, however, warned that there should be no witch-hunt and that due process and the rule of law must be adhered strictly in the probes.

He said, “Even if the PDP members are being probed, we support the probes because people are being held to account for their stewardships in office but we don’t want political lynching.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife,Dame Patience, was stopped from using the VIP lounge of the Port Harcourt International Airport, barely two months after her husband left office.

The former first lady, who was in Port Harcourt for the burial of her late Chief Security Officer (CSO), Tamuno Jacob Igbomie, who was said to have been shot dead on Airport Road, Abuja, penultimate Friday, was said to have been denied access to the VIP lounge, commonly used by dignitaries.

Staff members at the airport were said to have denied her access to the lounge on “orders from above.”

“Mrs Jonathan was on her way to the burial of her late CSO, Tamuno Jacob Igbomie, who was allegedly shot dead by unknown assailants penultimate Friday.

“Igbomie’s corpse was found in his Honda Accord car on Airport Road, Abuja, with all his phones, wallet and other personal effects intact in the car.

“Last Friday, July 17, the former first lady arrived Port Harcourt International Airport and made for the VIP lounge as had been the norm. However, she was practically locked out and prevented from accessing the lounge.

“All efforts by the former president’s wife and the few people by her to pacify the security agents at the airport to allow the protocol were rebuffed, as they stood their ground claiming that they had ‘orders from above,’” a source who witnessed the scene said.

Politics / Protest Over Nigeria’s Ban On 113 Crude Carriers By Global Ship Owners by WatchdogNews: 3:22pm On Jul 24, 2015
The International crude tanker owners have strongly protested against Nigeria’s ban on 113 vessels from loading at its oil terminals, with some oil companies seeking assurances that the hired vessels are not on the ban list, according to the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (Intertanko).

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had issued a letter on July 15, citing a directive from President Muhammadu Buhari, which said the vessels, mainly VLCC (very large crude carriers) crude oil tankers, were banned from calling at Nigerian crude oil terminals and also from Nigerian waters with immediate effect.

However, industry association Intertanko, whose independent members own the majority of the world’s tanker fleet, said in a letter to NNPC, dated July 22, that there were no “evidence or grounds” given for the ban, reported The Economic Times of India.

Instead, the owners want the oil companies to share their oil loading and discharge figures in case this information is sought by the Nigerian government.

“Members (say) some oil majors are attempting to introduce charter-party clauses requiring the owner to warrant that the ship is not subject to any Nigerian bans or restrictions due to failure to report any out-turn figures for prior voyages,” Bill Box, Intertanko’s manager communications and external relations, was quoted by Platts as stating yesterday. US-based Platts is an information provider on energy and metals.

Intertanko has advised its members to avoid any such clauses in the charter-party agreements, Box said.

“On the contrary, charterers should be asked to warrant that they will ensure that out-turn figures are provided in Nigeria,” he added.
The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners or Intertanko is one of the largest grouping in the shipping industry with 207 full members and 285 associate members, and a registered fleet of over 3,000 tankers of over 270 million DWT (deadweight).

Intertanko has issued a letter of protest to NNPC’s London office, with copies to the Nigerian High Commissioner and the country’s Alternate Permanent Representative at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

“There is no reference to policies and requirements and no evidence or grounds are given for the ban,” the letter addressed to NNPC said.

“Many of these ships have not traded (in) Nigeria for a number of years and some have never been there,” Intertanko’s General Counsel Michele White said in the letter seen by Platts. In some cases, the ship has changed ownership since the last call in Nigeria, Box added.

These bans should be lifted with immediate effect until grounds and evidence for the ban have been given to each vessel and its owner or operator, and the owner or operator has had an opportunity to respond, White said.

However, the ban has not affected the loading schedules in Nigeria, prompting rates to move off its highs. The key PG-Japan rate was assessed w11.5 points lower Wednesday at w77.

“Government officials have cut all communication but so far there is no emergency,” a source said with reference to Nigeria’s current loading programme for crude oil.

Whatever the circumstances, as a result of the NNPC directive, these vessels will not be permitted to operate in Nigerian waters.
Meanwhile, the World Bank is nudging up its 2015 forecast for crude oil prices from $53 in April to $57 per barrel after oil prices rose 17 per cent in the April to June quarter.

According to AFP, the forecast was contained in the bank’s latest Commodity Markets Outlook released on Wednesday.

The bank said energy prices rose 12 per cent in the quarter, with the surge in oil offset by declines in natural gas and coal prices.
However, it said it expected energy prices to average 39 per cent below 2014 level.

“Natural gas prices are projected to decline across all three main markets including the United States, Europe and Asia.
“Coal prices are likely to fall 17 per cent”, it said.

Excluding energy, the bank reported a two per cent decline in prices for the quarter and forecast that non-energy prices would average 12 per cent below 2014 levels this year.

“Demand for crude oil was higher than expected in the second quarter. Despite the marginal increase in the price forecast for 2015.
“Large inventories and rising output from OPEC members suggest prices will likely remain weak in the medium-term,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the report.

The bank said Iran’s new nuclear agreement with the US and other leading governments, if ratified, would ease sanctions, including restrictions on oil exports from Iran.

It said downside risks to the forecast included higher-than-expected non-OPEC production supported by falling production costs and continuing gains in OPEC output.

It also predicted possible upside pressures from closure of high-cost operations as the number of operational oil rigs in the US remain down 60 per cent since its November high.

Events / 10 Things To Do This Weekend – Article By Pam by WatchdogNews: 2:10pm On Jul 24, 2015
SWIMMING:
Going swimming this weekend is quite a fun way to relax, it is more fun if you are going with your friends or family. What better way to brighten up the day by competing with friends to see who swims better.

Visit an Old Friend:
We all have friends that we haven’t seen in a long time. Why not give them a call and get together this weekend? One of the nicest ways to spend an evening is at home (at your own or your friends’) with beer or wine and good conversation. If the weather is good in your part of the world, have a barbecue and make it a night to remember.

Play Board/Card Games:
Invite some friends over and have a card night. Get a couple of board and card games such as Monopoly, Scrabble, Chess, Uno, Ludo, City of Thieves or basically any games that would make you think or any new game. That is another way to spend your weekend.

Have a Picnic:
Plan a picnic with your friends or throw a picnic lunch together and find a shady spot to enjoy the day with your loved ones. With snacks, drinks and yoghurt…. You get yourself a picnic. You can also make (or buy) little sandwiches with salmon, cucumber, egg, or any other posh sandwich filling and also a cake. Take a nice rug to sit on and take your best cutlery and real glasses and plates. Don’t forget the champagne

Throw a B.Y.O.E. Party
This stands for Bring Your Own Everything. Guests are encouraged to bring food and drinks to share. At this kind of parties, games could also be played.

Politics / Democracy Is Being Murdered In Nigeria By Chinda by WatchdogNews: 10:46am On Jul 23, 2015
President Buhari promised a new era. He apologized for his past mistakes and swore that he was a changed man. He promised fairness and a just political system. He either lied or is being used as a puppet. Either ways, it does not bode well for the new government.

In the past seven days, the SSS has embarked on a dangerous series of arrests under the all-encompassing guise of national security. First on the list was the former NSA chairman whose homes were invaded and raided and passport seized. Next, was the ex-CSO to the former president, who was detained without charge and held for over 96 hours without access to his family, lawyers—and perhaps most distressingly—his medication. And then came Monday. On 21 July, 2015, the SSS invited Gesila Khan, the INEC REC for Rivers State, for a talk—a talk that has now gone on for over 48 hours. No one knows exactly where Gesila Khan is. There are whispers that ......................

Politics / Buhari – “250,000 Barrels Of Nigerian Crude Are Stolen Daily And Sold by WatchdogNews: 10:29am On Jul 23, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari while reacting to questions from members of Nigerians In Diaspora Organization (NIDO) in the United States and Canada at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC on the third day of his visit vowed that his administration will trace the accounts of individuals who stashed away ill-gotten oil money, freeze and recover the loot and prosecute the culprits.

President Buhari lamented that “Corruption in Nigeria has virtually developed into a culture where honest people are abused” and according to him, “250,000 barrels per day of Nigerian crude are being stolen and people sell and put the money into individual accounts.” He also added that the United States and other developed countries “are helping Nigeria to trace such accounts now.

We will ask that such accounts be frozen and prosecute the persons. The amount involved is mind-boggling. Some former ministers were selling about one million barrels per day. I assure you that we will trace and repatriate such money and use the documents to prosecute them. A lot of damage has been done to the integrity of Nigeria with individuals and institutions already compromised.”

Citing the example of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), President Buhari said unlike what obtained during his tenure as Federal Commissioner for Petroleum under military regime when the NNPC had only two traceable accounts before paying oil proceeds into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), “now everybody is doing anyhow.”

The President, who expressed skepticism on the existence of oil subsidy, said if subsidy was removed, transport, housing and food prices would go out of control and the average worker would suffer untold hardship.

While agreeing that the “economy is in an extremely bad shape,” following 16 years of bad government by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which ran down the oil refineries and had the “treasury in their pockets,” he said the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration would fulfill its three-pronged campaign manifesto of providing security, turning around the economy with a major focus on youth employment and fighting corruption. According to him, agriculture and mining would receive priority attention as faster job-creation avenues for the teeming unemployed youth, adding that some foreign investors had agreed to take advantage of the immense business opportunities in Nigeria.

President Buhari promised that his administration would at the right time tap into the enormous talents available among-st members of NIDO especially as consultants while their requests for voting right in 2019, a Diaspora Commission and opening of new consulates in parts of the United States and Canada would be looked into.

The President had earlier met at the same venue with a group of young professionals in the United States and assured them of his government’s resolve to fight corruption, remain steadfast and invest heavily in education which he said was the answer to taking the youth out of poverty and ignorance. The youth in their huge numbers took turns to express their best wishes for the President and the country.

Politics / Breakingnews: Dss Holds Gesila Khan, Rivers State Inec Rec Without Charge by WatchdogNews: 3:19pm On Jul 22, 2015
The DSS has continued in its (APC-backed?) crusade against public officials by arresting the Rivers State INEC REC. Sources reveal that Mrs. Gesila Khan, the Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), who was in charge during the Rivers State presidential and gubernatorial elections, has been arrested and unjustly detained. Friends and colleagues report she is currently being held against her will by the DSS. Reports reaching Watchdog News indicate that the commissioner was invited for an interview by the DSS yesterday but never left. Instead, it appears like the SSS has summarily detained her without notice.

Although charges are yet to be made, it appears that the commissioner’s arrest is likely to be in relation with the conduct of the Rivers State Presidential and Gubernatorial elections. A source revealed that the move is the first of many in a plan by the APC to upturn the electoral results of Rivers state.
“Backed by the APC, it appears the DSS is trying to intimidate the REC into swinging the tribunal decisions for the APC.”

Attempts to reach the DSS to ascertain the status of the commissioner, or get a clarification for the charges have been unsuccessful. The commissioner’s suspected arrest will also follows a series of arrests and surprise raids conducted by the DSS over the last seven days, which have led to several notable persons including the former NSA chairman and ex-CSO to former president Jonathan being detained.

It is unclear whether President Buhari, who is currently in the US, ordered her arrest or has been informed of the detention. However it is hard to see how the latter can be avoided, seeing as Rotimi Amaechi is currently travelling with the president as part of his entourage to the US. Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi is closely associated with President Buhari and campaigned hard for his election. Many political analysts have suggested that President Buhari owes a significant part of his victory to Amaechi.

Politics / Confusion Over Obua’s Status: Sources Claim Former CSO Not Dead But Hospitalized by WatchdogNews: 2:29pm On Jul 21, 2015
Contrary to reports that have been making rounds on the internet alleging that the former CSO to Ex-President Jonathan, Gordon Obua had died in DSS custody, the cable has debunked the reports claiming that he was only hospitalized and has since been discharged.

Gordon Obua, the former chief security officer (CSO) to former President Goodluck Jonathan, is now in a “stable condition” after falling ill on Monday.
Obua, who has been detained by the DSS also known as SSS in Abuja since the night of July 16, had embarked on hunger strike to protest the conditions of his detention.

Politics / Adams Oshiomhole - EFCC Can Probe State's Local Government Accounts by WatchdogNews: 11:04am On Jul 14, 2015
In response to a call made by the Edo state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Dan Orbih, for the Economic Financial Crimes EFCC to probe the state’s local government accounts, Governor of the State Adams Oshiomhole, has said his administration is ready to subject the local government accounts for investigation by the EFCC.

The PDP chairman had blamed the financial crisis in local government areas in the state on Mr. Oshiomhole.

“We have more than enough materials to nail the corrupt practices of the political leaders in Edo State starting with the governor,” Mr. Orbih had said.

He said the council chairmen earn between N1.2million and N1.7 million each every month as security votes, while the legislative arm of the councils earn about N1 million each as security votes.

He, however, noted that what the council chairmen collected was nowhere close to the over N500 million Mr. Oshiomhole draws monthly in security votes.

“Here is a governor asking council chairmen to forfeit N1.2 million per month but who cannot forfeit N500 million. The total security vote of the councils in a year is about what Oshiomhole collects every month.

Politics / Pres Buhari - "New Chiefs Were Chosen On Merit" by WatchdogNews: 10:37am On Jul 14, 2015
While addressing the newly appointed service chiefs shortly after their appointment on Monday, President Buhari said that the new chiefs were chosen on merit.

“All of you, including the National Security Adviser, were chosen on merit,” the President said.

“Your records gave you the job.

“Save for the new Chief of Army Staff whom I briefly met at his Command at the Multi-National Joint Task Force, in Chad, I don’t know any of you.

“Your records recommended you.”

The president therefore charged the new military chiefs to help him rebuild the reputation of the Armed Forces and the nation.

The President also called on them to show utmost commitment to their new duties.

Mr. Buhari assured them that their nominations would be sent to the National Assembly for confirmation.

“Legally, you are in acting capacity until the National Assembly accepts you,” the President said.

“It is only then that you will take the oath of office. Thereafter, we will sit down and talk in more detail.”
