Politics / Nigeria Immigration Service Launches Automated Passport Application by Watoni2T(m): 6:06pm On Jan 08
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday launched the automated passport application process to expedite passport acquisition for Nigerians.
The NIS in a statement on Monday said the launch followed a live demonstration session hosted by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, unveiling the functionality of the new system to stakeholders from across the country on Saturday in Abuja.

Speaking during the technical session, the Minister noted that the new reform seeks to redefine how citizens enrol and procure the international passport in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With an emphasis on convenience, reduced processing time, and an overall seamless experience, the Minister assured the public that this new solution will enhance national security and data protection.

He said: “With the new solution, application, processing, review, and approval will all be done online. On knowledge transfer, we have trained our officers to assume the new roles.
With what we have done now, we have reduced the process of requesting for a passport to about six minutes. This does not require anybody to visit the immigration office and it will reduce the pressure on the immigration officers.

“As I speak, we have made arrangements for power and internet service providers to ensure at least 99.9% uptime. By February, Nigerians in the diaspora can have this same experience.”

On identity theft, the Minister disclosed that the Service has also achieved its objective of harmonization of data through its technical handshake with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC.

Speaking on the readiness of the system and the men of the Service, the Comptroller General of NIS, Mrs Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, stated that the new process was a result of hardwork and determination of the Service.

She said: “What you’re seeing today is the product of dedication and motivation to see that an end comes to the stress, pains, and hardship that Nigerians go through to procure the international passport both at home and in the diaspora.

“We are motivated to stamp out corruption. That the Green Passport is restored to its place of pride. The Minister, Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has challenged the Service, and has provided resources and technical know-how.”

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) is a prestigious institution that has produced some of the finest military officers in Nigeria and beyond. Situated in Kaduna, a bustling city in the northern part of the country, the NDA has a rich history that spans several decades.

From its humble beginnings as a training facility for the Nigerian Army in the 1960s, the NDA has evolved into a world-class institution that provides cutting-edge military training to cadets from various parts of Nigeria and other countries.

The NDA is one of Nigeria’s most prestigious tertiary institutions and, by extension, Africa. The academy trains the three branches of the military: Army, Airforce, and Navy. Cadets undergo five years of military training for the Army and a four-year training for the Navy and Air Force. Even before graduating as officers, cadets are highly respected in society.

All newly accepted cadets typically have a difficult first year because they must adjust to the demanding physical, emotional, and psychological training and exercise to lose their “Civilian Mentality.” Typically, this is for the first three months after resuming at the academy. Some academy cadets nickname this “Decivilization”. The newly admitted Terma 1 cadets are loosely called “clowns.”

Life of a Clown in NDA, Kaduna
Since the newly admitted cadets immediately surrender their peace when they enter the Academy, they must attempt to endure everything that is thrown at them during their numerous arduous and demanding training. They follow the instructions of their superiors, no matter how seemingly hard the task may seem.

To complete your morning duties as a Terma 1 Cadet, which include cleaning the entire hostel, ironing and polishing your room seniors’ boots, and preparing for a Muster Parade, which is typically at 4 am before the Morning Jog, you must be awake at 3 am or earlier every morning.

Breakfast is served at six in the morning, and there is always enough food for everyone to eat and feel content. However, before you get too enthusiastic, remember that after completing the Academy’s demanding training sessions, you will sweat out all of that food.

The second terma is one of the evilest terma at the Academy because they want to exact retribution for everything that was done to them in their first year, and the “Clowns” are the best and only people they can vent their rage on. When you arrive at the Academy, they will be your greatest adversary. Sometimes, you may feel like giving up or dying, but that is exactly what the training should prepare you for. However, some Cadets flee, which is why the phrase “Survival of the Fittest” was coined.

Politics / Defence Chief- Stay Back And Fight For Nigeria by Watoni2T(m): 7:13pm On Dec 25, 2023
The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Gen. Christopher Musa, has advised against the rush to migrate abroad, urging Nigerians to stay back and fight for the country.

Musa advised against the ‘Japa syndrome’ on Monday when he visited ailing personnel at the Defence Headquarters Hospital, Abuja, to mark Christmas and his birthday.

He urged all to exhibit love for the country, adding that running away is not a solution.

“We must stay and fight whatever challenge is. Those countries they are running to stood back and fought and got to where they are.

“If they had ran away, they would not have achieved that for them (Nigerians) to go and meet them.”

The CDS also called on Nigerians to take ownership of the challenges facing the country, adding that the security challenge should not be left for the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

According to him, insecurity calls for a collective effort and all Nigerians should put hands together to address the challenge.

“We cannot do it alone. We need the support of everyone. When you see something, say something, report as quickly as possible so that measures can be put in place adequately.

“We will continue to seek for support of members of the public to take ownership of our challenges.

“Nigeria is our own. If Nigeria succeeds, we all succeed, if Nigeria fails we all fail and we don’t want Nigeria to fail.

“So I call on all Nigerians to give us all the support,” he added.

Politics / I Wanted To Be A Civil Engineer — IBB by Watoni2T(m): 6:35pm On Dec 25, 2023
Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB, has said that his initial plan in life was to become a civil engineer. He noted that the decision by the then government of Northern Nigeria that youths of his time should be enlisted into the Nigerian army changed the course of his destiny.

Babangida spoke in a live radio programme anchored by the Federal University of Technology, FUT, Minna campus radio, ‘Search FM’, on Saturday morning.

Babangida said on completion of primary education, he went to Bida Provincial Secondary School and, after six years, joined the Military Training College, Kaduna, almost immediately.
Responding to how joining the military shaped the rest of his life and what informed his decision to enlist as cadet officer, IBB said: “Well, maybe to understand the background, at about that period there was a deliberate government policy.

“At that time there were not a lot of people from the North who were in the military. So it took a deliberate policy to go around and invite the younger generation from secondary schools, (government colleges) to come and join the military. And that’s what started our career in the military.”

The Civil War

On the experience and lessons of the Nigerian civil war, the former President said: “It’s not a very nice experience, I must say.

“First of all, you had people you went to school with, people you trained with, people who were your friends, suddenly, as a result of the war, you find yourselves facing each other on opposite sides.

“So that’s the uniquely sad aspect of a civil war and I pray it never happens again.”

“I wanted to be a civil engineer”, Babangida replied when asked what he would have become if the deliberate policy by the northern government did not alter his plans.

On his leadership style that has attracted, and still attracting both good and bad compliments IBB said: “Just like any other style, you are placed in a leadership position your job is to lead people.

“You develop a situation where people look up to you to provide certain solutions to their problems or to their fear; whatever it is.

“And you stand out as the person who will be able to do that. So you have to study human beings, you have to read about them and you have to be very compassionate.

“It is not very comfortable but then we had to do it. The purpose was to unite the country to keep it as one not to break it.

“Sometimes ruthlessness gets things done but there are a lot of ways you have to develop so that you’ll be able to achieve certain things. Others you plead with, some you coerce and so on and so forth”.,

He added that leaders and leadership is all about taking responsibilities for perceived rights and wrongs in the administration.

“What I want to be remembered for”
Babangida said part of what he would wish to be remembered for “is that I served the country the best I could.

It may not be to your satisfaction but to the best that I could. I leave that to history to judge and I related fairly well with the people of the country. I had no problems with them and I got to know the country more as I was well travelled. I made friends all over the country and I thought that was one of the greatest achievements”.

Recall that IBB led the country as a Military President from 1985 to 1993. He, thereafter, “stepped aside” after the debacle of the 1993 presidential election.

… youths
The former leader adviced younger generations on the need to try as much as possible to know and understand the country, Nigeria because they are going to lead the country in the future.

“You have an opportunity now as young people, get to know the country, study the country, the people and if you are able to do that or to understand that, basically I think that will go a long way to prepare you for the eventual leadership of the country”.

Speaking on whether or not the biopic, ‘Portrait of a General’ by Nollywood is an accurate representation of events of his time, IBB said, “Well, as a military man a man who practiced both in war and peace time I would have corrected one or two places.

“But I think what they (Nollywood) are trying to project is a food for thought that could give us the room for improvement.”

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB, commended the entire Search Media crew and the management of FUT, Minna led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Farouk Adamu Kuta for setting the pace for campus radio to thrive in Niger state.
