OVERHAUL THE NIGERIA POLICE AND END POLICE EXTORTION ON OUR HIGHWAYS NOW!!- BY: Gideon Ele 19th August, 2018. The time for Positive Change in governance is now! While we commend the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo on his recent directive to the IG of police to overhaul the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Sqaurd (FSARS), we also call on him to not just do an overhaul on the FSARS alone but to extend the directive to the Nigerian Police to carry out a total overhaul on the men of the Nigerian Police force, especially her patrol team on our highways as is the focus of this article. Of a truth we must commend the Nigerian Police in her efforts in combatting crime & criminality especially in this ever complex and security challenging time in our corporate existence as a nation. In the same vein, we condemn in strong terms the shameful & disgraceful disposition of men of the Nigerian Police force in our checkpoints how they boldly demand for cheap gratifications like N100 & N200 from comercial motorists with authority & guts as though it is thier rights; and refusal by these motorists to comply have always resulted to disaster & sometimes death. There are records of pockets of violence where motorists have been shot dead for refusing to comply with these police men on our highways. This shameful act by the Nigerian Police is very unfortunate for our police force. First it is a dent and stain on our image as a nation & her corporate personality to foreigners & the international community at large. Secondly, it denigrates, debases & ridicules our police system. It is an eye sore on our highways seeing our supposedly professional police officers receiving bribe on the public highways! Thirdly, it shows a failed system of administration of both the political executives, the National Assembly & the Judiciary! THE WAY FORWARD: Citizens must arise & speak up against this abnormality! All arms of government & levels must rise to this occasion to restructure, restore & rebrand our police force to wear a civil outlook. The Nigerian Police is doing a great job, but the bad eggs amongst them must be fished out to restore back the lost glory and beauty of the Agency. Unfortunately, So many Presidential Police reform committees have been constituted by previous administrations with nothing to show for. Various committee's report have been thrown into the trash can. We must encourage the National Assembly to expediate action on the Police Amendment Bill in the floor of the Senate seeking to repeal the Police Act of 1943 which seeks to reform the Police to have a modern look & aproach that is acceptable globally. RECOMENDATIONS: In a way of recomendation, (1) we call on the Executive arm of government and the Police Service Commission (PSC) to as a matter of necessity improve on the welfare scheme of men of the force. An improved working wage, allowances & overall working condition of men of the force will greatly reduce the quest by police officers demanding for gratification from motorist on our highways. (2) The need for training & retraining of police officers is very critical in the discharge of thier duties. Training is key for these officers especially in an ever dynamic & changing time we live in. (3) The Police Service Commission must be funded by government adequately to provide the needed infrastructure & policing environment for an effective police service system. A recent report from the Presidential Police Reform Committee setup by Late President Umaru Yaradua, Chaired by former police IG. Alhaji Muhammadu Dikko Yusuf revealed that the Police is under funded, hence the service delivery of the men is affected Finally, Corporation between police & citizen is crucial. The Police as a civil society Agency of government cannot function without a proper synergy & corporation from its citizens. Therefore citizen must realise that an effective policing service can only be possible through proper communication & corporation with men of the force. A better Nigeria Police I possible END. FOR: ADVOCASY FOR POSITIVE GOVERNANCE (APG) GIDEON ELE 07063249904 08188573805 Cc: -President Muhamadu Buhari -Acting President Prof. Yemi Osibanjo -The Senate President, Dr. Bukola SARAKI -The Speaker, House of Reps.
