The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, granted the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, bail in the sum of N500 million with two sureties in like sum.
This was after the former governor had pleaded not guilty to the 19-count charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
He is facing an alleged money laundering trial to the tune of N80bn but pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
When the case was called for hearing, on Friday, Counsel for the EFCC, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, notified the court of the intention of the Prosecution to withdraw an earlier application for abridgment of the earlier date fixed for arraignment.
He said the application had been overtaken by events. The Defendant's Counsels, led by Joseph Daudu, SAN, did not object and Justice Emeka Nwite, accordingly granted the request.
After the Defendant had taken his plea, Daudu SAN made clarifications on the reasons he had not been in court during the previous hearings.
"I would like to place on record that for any impression that might have been created that the Defendant did not wish to appear before your lordship, coincidentally, the ruling on my lord's sitting this morning dealt with the issue of jurisdiction.
"What the Defendant did was to ask his counsel to challenge the jurisdiction of the court, which got to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
"So it was not a wishful disrespect but he was only trying to defend himself. So we all hold your lordship in high esteem. If that impression must have been, he should not have presented himself for arraignment. That episode is gone and things are clearer now," the Counsel stated.
While moving an application for bail, he assured that the former Governor would always be present in court for the trial.
"I am saying this with the highest sense of responsibility that the defendant, a two-term governor of Kogi State, who travelled only two times out of his eight years in service, will always be present in court at all times.
"There should be no apprehension that he will jump bail. So we urge your lordship to grant us very reasonable conditions of bail such that he will be able to bear," the Defendant's Counsel said.
He commended the Prosecution Counsel, saying he had conducted himself in the best tradition because the matter was not a do-or-die one.
He said they had agreed that the counsels would not stress his lordship over the issue of bail.
The Prosecution Counsel concurred.
Pinheiro, SAN, said, "I must express my honour to the very eminent lead senior counsel. He is a man of immense stature, not because of his size.
"I do respect him as president of NBA. I also confirm that we have been engaging in series of discussion to ease the burden on your lordship in compliance with Rule 26 of Rules of Professional Ethics.
"I also note that your lordship had delivered not less than five rulings in this matter and it is our aim to ease the work. We are prosecutors not persecutors and EFCC is a professional commission, a prosecutorial and not prosecutorial commission," he said.
He added, "We accept the assurances of the very eminent SAN that the defendant will make himself available subject to your lordship's discretionary terms that may be imposed.
"By so doing, we will ease the burden on the court. Therefore, we will not be opposing the eminent SAN's submission."
The Prosecution Counsel said though they had filed a counter-affidavit, they would not oppose the bail, going by the assurances of the learned SAN.
Ruling on the bail application, Justice Nwite said, "I have listened to the submissions of both counsels. It is not in dispute that both counsels have filed applications in respect of this.
"Based on the account exhibited by learned counsel for the defendant, which was exhibited and supported by prosecution counsel, I am minded to change my earlier stand on this matter."
He granted the Defendant N500 million bail with two sureties.
"Sureties must be landed property owners within the jurisdiction of this court. They must swear to affidavit of means. The title deeds of priority to be verified by the court registrar," he said.
The Defendant was also asked to submit his international passport while he would remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the perfection of the bail conditions.
Recall that the ex-governor was earlier remanded in a fresh N110bn charge by the EFCC, pending his bail application.

As Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) eloquently said, "Calling a person by his father’s name is more appropriate for knowing who is who and telling people apart."
This reflects both the wisdom and beauty of Islamic teachings, which safeguard lineage and personal identity.
The decision by NYSC is a move toward preserving the individuality of women and respecting their roots. It reminds us of the importance of maintaining our values and rejecting practices that are inconsistent with justice, logic, and faith.

Lukgaf: This week, I want us to reflect on how deeply obsessed we have become with our phones—even to the point of bringing them into the mosque. This obsession has reached a level where it distracts us during acts of worship, diminishing the sanctity of our relationship with Allah.
Imagine this: In front of a parent, teacher, or elder, we dare not press our phones, knowing it is a sign of disrespect. Similarly, no one would check their emails or scroll through social media while standing before a judge in court. Yet, we find it acceptable to do this in the house of Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Where is the fear and reverence due to Allah?
It is now common to see people, right after the Tasleem (concluding the prayer), immediately take out their phones to check WhatsApp messages or emails instead of engaging in Adhkar (remembrance of Allah). Worse still, during the Friday Khutbah, a sacred moment when we are commanded to be silent and attentive, many are distracted by their devices.
This behavior contradicts the essence of Ihsaan, as described by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: "Ihsaan is to worship Allah as though you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He sees you."

The question is: if we truly reflect on the fact that Allah sees us, would we still dare to disrespect Him in His house by prioritizing our phones over our devotion?
HOW CAN WE CURB THIS HABIT?
1. Leave Your Phone at Home or in the Car: If your phone is not absolutely necessary, avoid taking it into the mosque. This will eliminate the temptation to check it.
2. Switch Off Data or Put the Phone in Airplane Mode: If you need your phone for emergencies or for Quran apps, turn off notifications to avoid distractions.
3. Fear Allah’s Watchfulness: Remember that Allah sees us and knows what is in our hearts. Reflect on the reverence and focus required during worship.
4. Reflect on the Rewards We Are Missing: By neglecting Adhkar and not listening attentively to the Khutbah, we are missing out on immense rewards and blessings.
5. Remind Ourselves of the Disrespect: Think about how inappropriate it is to prioritize a device over Allah, the Creator of all things.
Let us strive to regain the focus and humility required in the house of Allah. The mosque is a place for worship, reflection, and submission—not a space for worldly distractions. May Allah guide us to worship Him with sincerity and devotion.

The fornicator(s) should repent sincerely to Allah and the bride should wait for a menstrual cycle after giving birth! The correct position which is that of the majority of Muslim scholars is the forbiddance of the attribution of the kid born from fornication to the fornicating biological father! A child born this way will not inherit the biological father accordingly! Also forbidden is aborting the fetus as a result of the shame of fornication!
Preface: This is common in many tribes in Nigeria and in many countries all over the world. The bride get pregnant before they think about solemnizing the union in Nikaah! And some Muslims are not left out in this backward culture as sometimes there exist an agreement between the dating partners to do the Nikaah when pregnancy is confirmed!
Firstly: It is permissible for the one who committed zina (Illegal sex) to marry the woman with whom he committed zina if they are no longer regarded as zaani (Fornicators) , which is after repenting sincerely. If she is pregnant, it is not permissible to do the marriage contract with her until her pregnancy ends, and the child is not to be named after the zaani according to the majority of scholars. Some scholars are of the view that the illegitimate child is to be called after the zaani if he acknowledges him.
In Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah it says: What is required of both of them is to repent to Allah then to give up this crime and regret what has happened in the past of committing immoral actions, and they should resolve never to go back to it and they should do a lot of righteous deeds in the hope that Allah will accept their repentance and turn their bad deeds into good deeds. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “And those who invoke not any other ilaah (god) along with Allaah, nor kill such person as Allaah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse and whoever does this shall receive the punishment.
69. The torment will be doubled to him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace;
70. Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds; for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful
71. And whosoever repents and does righteous good deeds; then verily, he repents towards Allaah with true repentance” [al-Furqaan 25:68-71]
