Programming / Re: I Want To Learn Programming. Which Language Should I Start With? by webdevgod: 7:27am On Jun 13, 2016
The type of programming language depends on which field you want to enter:

Web development (Php, Javascript)
App development ( For Android - Java, C++; For IOS - Objective C)
Software / Games development (Java, C++, C,C#, Visual Basic )

So ideally, you need to know which field you want to enter so you dont end up wasting your time.

how can windows be slow ? C'mon.
Processors are fast enough.
Linux is actually, very programmer centric. But apart from that, you can live and die as a programmer in window land.

I have used both Windows and Mac, and I prefer Mac because of its efficiently and performance. But ideally in a professional environment, Macs & linux are the main ones used.

Programming / Re: Whats the Basic Things To Know Before Learning Coding by webdevgod: 12:51pm On Mar 16, 2016
Cyberrex:
Guys, what are the things to know before learning how to code so as to make things easier

If you are good at algebra and have good logical thinking. You should be okay. You dont have to be a master in algebra, but if you understand the concept of variables, you have one of the many basics covered.

If you want to get into programming you want to understand these principles:
Variables
Arrays
Functions
If/else statements
For Loops

This should be a good starting point for you, after that you'll need to challenge yourself.

Im still pretty junior, and this what I have told by the seniors I work with.

A good source to learn the basics of coding would be codeacademy.com

Didnt it compile?

It will but windows is very slow, and not efficient enough.

You're better off using a Mac or Linux for better performance and efficiency

the only professions with good pay are those that confer bragging rights here. That's why certifications are so much a big deal here. Acca, ican, coren,LLB,LLM
, phD,mba, cfa, cisa. Once it can be mystified, certificatted, and bragged about
(e.g used to trail your name ), the salary may improve. That's how we think. If one corporation created artificial scarcity and prestige around programming, web dev like they do around, business admin (mba), accounting (acca, ican), law (law school), finance (cfa, cfe), or medicine (medical school). Nigerians will tumble over themselves to join, and the salary may improve. It's all myopia.
Programming trumps law, accounting, medicine etc in difficulty yet the professionals here are treated like sh*t.

Over here, experience is what counts most. Most jobs dont require you to have certificates and all that jazz. As long as you have a portfolio to show case your skills, you'll get the job.

You are simply buttressing my point that PHP is cheap.

No serious company in Nigeria will put their MISSION CRITICAL APPLICATIONS on PHP.

When i call programmers, i am not talking about some one who copies scripts and modify with a few texts flying from left to right on the screen.

Im pretty sure PHP is a programming language if you check here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages

Therefore anyone who writes script in PHP is a PHP programmer.

grin

Like I said earlier. A graphics designer is different from a programmer.

Some one who copies php scripts up and down is not a programmer.

No COMPANY IN NIGERIA will pay a programmer 40k a month.

I got more even as IT student as a programmer over 11 years ago

and on the 1m a month a programmer is receiving, i have 3-4 friends i know.

If you are curious we can place a bet we arrange how you will see at least 1 play slip / offer letter.

Like i said. The skill set is not copying and pasting scripts. We are talking about core developers who build MISSION CRITICAL SYSTEMS not a website with marquee and java scripts.

Some one who copies php scripts up and down is not a programmer.

Lol..

I dont know what field you are in, but Im in Web Development, and PHP is very serious for back end developers espically when it comes to developing eCommerce sites.

And what do you mean by copying and pasting scripts?

Have any of you guys tried to apply for vacancies in other countries? PHP is still widely used.

The thing about being a developer here, is that if you only know one programming language either it be javascript, php, c# etc, there will always be a job for you..

Hell even simple Basic HTML & CSS knowledge can get you a job grin
For example developing email templates you can get paid really well here

Junior Email developer for 25k per annum (N7m)
http://www.indeed.co.uk/cmp/Xcede/jobs/Junior-Email-Developer-477b29655eb2a900?q=HTML+Email+Developer

Why work for peanuts when you can earn 5 times in another country?

Can you imagine? Common £30k is almost N10m here.
This country is screwed.

Programmers arent respected here. We are more of a consumer economy. Even water would be imported if we had our way. Any programming taking place is support programming. Patching, adding a feature or coding to support business operations (rudimentary). We have no core technological companies. Some people dont even know what a programmer does, they look at you puzzled if you say you are a programmer.

Yeah that sucks big time. The BIG difference in pay is shameful. Very Shameful. Programmers in Nigeria are definitely not respected at all.

Reason why I going so hard about this, is because my cousin was CONVINCED that I would earn more as a Web Dev in Nigeria as opposed to London. When I told him, an junior dev get paid more than a senior dev in Nigeria, he didnt believe me undecided

I've seen an advertised job for
£200k online . And one where the blogger mentioned in passing $400k ( the coder was into finance ). The most extreme i've read of is a google coder, who is a rockstar, and was paid $3m/year! A company tried to poach him for $500k/yr and he blew them off.

400k/yr is less than 40k/month! That's slavery. Programming is hard enough. Maybe you meant N400k/month

Yes, dev jobs in Europe and America pay very well compared to African countries, hence why it would be quite normal to find a job paying £200k, thats the norm here.

But I dont think the same can be said for Africa, Nigeria so to speak.

When I said, I saw a job being advertised paying N400k a year (£1440.20)..I was refering to this one:
http://www.jobspire.com.ng/job,vacancy,117113,2,Web-Developer-Graphics-Designer,The-Olakunle-Soriyan-Company,Ikeja.html

Even most of the job ads dont mention how you you will get paid grin

This is a junior entry role for a web developer in London paying up to £30k a year (N8.3m)
http://www.reed.co.uk/jobs/junior-web-developer-net-newbury-30k/28973985#/jobs/junior-web-developer

Nigeria are paying peanuts man...I actually feel so sorry for Nigerian devs

So those guys claiming to that companies are paying N1m a month, where are these companies, post a link.

thanks

Before I answer you question have bear this is mind
Web development is broken into two:

1. Frontend development (client side)
2. Backend development (sever side)

Frontend End Languages
The main ones are:
HTML5
CSS
Javascript

Others include:
jQuery
Angular
Node
MongoDB
Gulp
SCSS/LESS

Backend Languages:
PHP
mySQL
Python
Ruby
C#

Now to answer your question:

web development and my questions are:
self learning or must it be taught by a tutor?
Both are good. But I recommend you learn from professionals and try to gain commercial experience so that you are aware of the best coding practices and can keep up with the latest technology.

duration to know the basics if 12 hours dedicated daily
This depends on what you want to do. Either Frontend or Backend.

HTML & CSS are fairly easy to grasp within a month, so to speak.

Programming languages such as JavaScript, PHP, C# take more time to understand due to its complexity. In can take a lifetime to fully understand. Be prepared to learn new things everyday.

best online site for materials
https://www.codecademy.com/
http://www.w3schools.com/
Check out the website of the languages you want to learn. Look for the documentations.
Watch youtube videos.

your advice join?
Pick a programming language and master it. Be a specialist in one language. You dont need to learn everything.

100K pounds would definitely be something a Senior is making I heard that the average for a Dev/Programmer in the UK is more around the lines of 45K to 50K pounds.

Yeah, senior devs get paid 80-100k and over.

Junior devs get paid on average 18-30k

Mid devs get paid 30-80k

Depends on which company you work for, but most Development companies pay really well here. What about Nigeria?

There isn't enough stats to suggest that devs in Nigeria are earning 1mill a month. What companies are paying that that much?

If devs in Naija are earning 1m and over, then thats alright.
