There are many 5w30 in the market. But they are not convenient for your car else there will not be sludge in a Toyota Engine. When you check your oil chamber cover, which oil and specification did Toyota ask you to use? There are 5w30 SJ, 5w30 SL and for your brand of Toyota, maybe 0w20 or 5w30 but with the API number. If you use 5w30 and you have sludge, the oil is not good for your car.

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code, which means that is applies to OBD-II equipped vehicles, including but not limited to Ford, Dodge, Toyota, VW, Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura, etc. The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) and Camshaft position sensor (CMP) work in harmony to control the spark/fuel delivery and timing. They both consist of a reluctor, or tone, ring which passes over a magnetic sensor, which generates a voltage, indicating position. The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and functions as the "trigger". It detects the position of the crankshaft relays that information on to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle) to control spark timing. What ties these two shafts and their sensors together is the timing belt or chain. The cam and crank should be precisely timed together. If you notice broken/frayed wires, repair and recheck. If you have access to a scope, check the cam and crank patterns. If a pattern is missing, suspect a bad sensor or a slipping tone ring. Remove the cam gear and the crankshaft harmonic balancer and inspect the tone rings for proper alignment and make sure they're not loose or damaged or that they haven't sheared the key that aligns them. If they are properly installed, replace the sensor. If the signal appears normal, then check the timing chain/belt for proper alignment. If it's misaligned, check for a damaged tensioner that may have allowed the chain/belt to slip a tooth or several teeth. Also check that the belt/chain isn't stretched. Repair and recheck.

NOTE: Toyota engines typically have sludge problem (especially at high mileages) even with using correct oil grade.

I also use 5w30 when changing my oil. But I know most people use Mobil 20W50 for several years without developing this particular issue.
Sure, their engine may smoke a little, but they don't go around with P0016 error codes.

I have a 2007 corolla which originally had a P0016 code and was running rough, especially at idle.
It runs fine when the car is hot.

Also usually, if you rev it at idle and keep it at 3000rpm for about 30 seconds, it runs smoother but it now would stay at 1500rpm before later coming down to normal idle speed.

We have replaced vvt solenoid, done engine flush, changed oil and filter because of sludge, replaced camshaft with actuator, replaced tensioner, reset the timing several times but all to no avail.

Any help or advise would be highly appreciated.

This matter is always a debate o. Corolla vs civic. Camry vs accord.
I think it's really a matter of preference. U can't go wrong with either. Go with whichever u like more than the other. U'll get similar fuel economy and reliability from both. The corolla may be slightly cheaper to maintain. While the civic is more classy and generally more fun to drive.
I'll suggest you try to drive both (if you can). The choice would be much easier thereafter.

GAZZUZZ didn't mean any disrespect but gave his candid opinion. That said, i think i quite agree with him to a large extent. In the long run, you will find what he said to be very true.

Though, we must also note that there are many people with this salary range (and even below) that own a car.
Also about the analysis on fuel costs, the guy does not have to drive it everyday. I know people that drive only once or twice to work in a week. But at least they "know" that they also have a car, even if they can't afford to drive it everyday yet. And, they can take their girlfriend/family out in it + stuff like church & events, etc.

If the guy has really settled it in his heart that buying a car is the next most important project he wants to embark on, he will only get nigerian used cars (1995-2002) within his budget range. Manual cars in this range would be about 50-100k cheaper than their automatic counterparts.
He should also save some money for repairs immediately after buying the car cos he will most likely need to fix a couple of things immediately.

Since he likes your EOD, maybe he can go for a baby boy (2000 model accord), or a 1999/2000 model corolla.
If he sees a good one, and gets a good technician to help him fix all issues the car may have, he shouldn't have much problems.

But seriously consider GAZZUZZ's advice. A "personal" car is really a liability, and can quickly become a money guzzler.
I wish your friend all the best, and progress in his work / career so he'll be able to in the not too distant future afford his dream car

If i'm not mistaken, this is a 1991/92 Golf. I'd say that's not too bad.

Mr, when you have a P0420 code which is what you posted, it clearly shows Cat below efficiency bank 1, what do you do? Run a Live scan, after which you delve into physical inspection of the cats which entails checking for Cat presence, absence or broken particles. Then replace with a good cat.

The important thing is that the issue has been comprehensively fixed even along with other stuff, all thanks to honmusa and the autologic team.

Took the car to Autologic as advised by honmusa, and I must say I was quite impressed with the scientific approach to auto diagnostics. The problem was pinpointed with accuracy. Most people will just do trial and error, and throw parts at it.

It turned out that the catalytic converter had been removed. Also, the actron scanner I personally used to read the fuel trim data earlier was also inaccurate. This was discovered with an OEM scanner at Autologic.

So, to fix issue, Vtec switch was replaced along with a used catalytic converter from Ladipo (I must say those Ladipo dealers are something else. Make sure they test stuff and fix in ur presence before paying, if u can. Or better still buy new if u can afford it).

The car's performance has noticeably improved. But I will observe mpg gains when next the tank is filled.

Kudos to honmusa. He's a great man.

Well, since it has to be a welded installation, to "tamper" with it or remove, you will have to "unweld" it from the car. Not very difficult for professionals. But also not as easy as unscrewing the bolts of a direct-fit cat.
