Phones › Blackberry Growing In Popularity In Nigeria by WebSurfer(op): 8:23am On Jul 28, 2011
The consumer BlackBerry Internet Service is available in 91 countries worldwide on over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile technologies
Article | July 28, 2011 - 3:12am

The use of BlackBerry technology in Nigeria has increased tremendously in the last 12 months as recent reports reveal that there are now about 1.5 million BlackBerry smartphones in use in the most populous African country.

Investigations, however, showed that about 40 per cent of this figure are not directly from any of the four GSM operators in Nigeria as they are obtained from the grey market where the handset is relatively cheaper.

The use of Blackberry smartphones is also said to have been influenced by various competitive strategies introduced by the GSM networks in Nigeria.

Airtel Nigeria, for instance, recently introduced a new dimension to the competition in the BlackBerry market.

Tagged ‘BConnected’ the bundle offers ‘BlackBerry Messenger’, a real time messaging and chat service, as well as access to social networks, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. It also offers access to monthly, weekly or daily plans on the expiration of a 30 day free trial period. The bundle is priced at N1, 580 (about $11) monthly but excludes e-mail services which most other BlackBerry services include.

MTN has also introduced a similar package that allows subscribers to use service at a cost that is as low as N450 ($3).

BlackBerry smartphones are primarily known for their ability to send and receive (push) Internet e-mail wherever mobile network service coverage is present, or through Wi-Fi connectivity.

They support a large array of instant messaging features, including BlackBerry Messenger. BlackBerry commands a 14.8 percent share of worldwide smart phone sales, making it the fifth most popular device manufacturer after Nokia, Samsung, LG, and Apple.

The consumer BlackBerry Internet Service is available in 91 countries worldwide on over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile technologies.

The grey market operators tend to sell unauthorised products which come mostly from Asia, as well as second hand products which come from Europe and the US. The attraction being that their prices are significantly lower than the prices of the authorised channels. They sometimes sell at less than half the prices of the authorised distributors.

The disadvantage of the grey market is that their products don’t come with warranties and are usually not as reliable or durable. Market watchers say though, that because Nigeria is a low income market, there is high demand for greymarket products, with all the problems they portend.

Politics › Atiku Says Obasanjo Is Selfish by WebSurfer(op): 8:14am On Jul 28, 2011
The former vice president reacts to the ex president’s reported call for the resignation of the House of Representatives speaker in 2013

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted sharply to calls by former president Olusegun Obasanjo that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, steps down in 2013.

Obasanjo made the remark on Tuesday at a meeting of the ruling People’s Democratic Party board of trustees at the presidential villa. The former president reportedly said if the speaker, elected against party policy that zoned the seat to the south west, fails to relinquish the office, then the zoning policy of the party will be “dead”. That, he said, will have far reaching consequences for the party and for the country.

Reacting, Atiku said in a statement on Wednesday the call smacks of selfishness since the same former president opposed zoning after the death of late President Umaru Yar’adua. The statement, released by the Atiku media office in Abuja, described Obasanjo’s warning that zoning would die in the party as “sheer display of hypocrisy.”

He said the call was “an insult on the intelligence of Nigerians.”

The former vice president said since Obasanjo benefited from the zoning policy between 1999 and 2007, “he was, however, surprised why Obasanjo made a u-turn on the sanctity of zoning in the run up to the PDP national convention last year when he shamelessly told the nation that zoning does not exist, despite consistent court rulings maintaining that it did in the ruling party’s constitution.

“It is surprising that former President Obasanjo is now posturing as the apostle of zoning when indeed, he was the one who did everything to destroy that equitable means of power sharing among all sections of Nigerian,” he said.

“It is on record that Obasanjo has no respect for the PDP constitution. He remains the problem in the PDP and governance in the country by trying to control every president he deems to have installed in power; something he could not have tolerated from others while he was in power.”

He said that Obasanjo has no power to determine the fate of the Speaker and his Deputy, which is absolutely the responsibility of the House members who voted them freely into office.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives spokesperson said the issue is a party matter and not before the House. Michael Bamidele, the chairman, House adhoc committee on media, said on Wednesday that “The House has chosen its leadership [and] there is no way 360 members will chose their leaders and one person will now frown at it. It is purely a party affair. PDP is lucky that they had a candidate that all opposition parties could trust which is good for our democracy.”

Politics › The Controversial Suicide by WebSurfer(op): 8:12am On Jul 28, 2011
The controversial suicide
Chinedu Andrew is finding it hard to convince the police that he does not have a hand in his wife’s alleged suicide on July 6.
The Lagos State Police Command is investigating the death of a 48-year-old woman, Elizabeth Andrew, whose body was found hanging in her apartment, on July 6, at Isheri area of Lagos State.

The deceased, a former staff of the State House at Dodan Barracks, allegedly committed suicide following depression as a result of her inability to get pregnant. Her corpse was found dangling from a window on July 6, as she allegedly used a scarf to hang herself at her number 17 Irawo-Owuro Street residence.

Her husband, Chinedu Andrew, 44, was said to have alerted the Isheri Police Station about the alleged suicide and her corpse was removed and taken to a public mortuary. The police also arrested him following allegations by a brother of the deceased, Okechukwu, that he has a hand in the alleged suicide because he maltreated his wife in the past.

During interrogation, Andrew however denied killing his wife stating that she has been mentally ill and depressed following her inability to conceive. He said that due to his wife’s ill health, her former employer relieved her of her job, a situation which worsened her depression.

“I do not know anything about killing my wife,” he said. “All I know is that my wife married late and she has fibroid and pile. She is mentally ill and this affected her life. She has been depressed because of these problems. Due to her poor mental health, she lost her job as a staff of the former State House at Dodan Barracks so she was always staying at home doing nothing. That day I went to my shop where I sell second hand clothes and around 6.00pm I went home and I noticed that the day was locked, I called out to my wife but she did not respond.

I also went to the window but I could not see from the outside. I later called my wife’s family to ask if they have seen her but they said she did not come to visit them so that was how I ended up sleeping outside the house till the next day. When it was morning I went to hire a ladder and, with the help of my neighbours, I climbed the roof where I saw her hanging from the window. I screamed, so that was how we called the police.”

Okechukwu, however, insists that his sister was murdered. He accused Andrew of maltreating his sister and causing her grief when she was alive. “My brother-in-law has not been a good person to my sister his wife,” he said. “He was a lazy man who was relying on her for everything, even the house they lived in she was the one who paid.

She bought him a bus to drive when he complained of not having any work to do but he later sold the bus. She also gave him money several times for business which he squandered, so his attitude toward her contributed to her ill health and eventual death and the police should investigate him because my sister is his second wife and his first wife also died mysteriously.”

Health › Malaria Kills 300,000 Nigerians Annually by WebSurfer(op): 8:07am On Jul 28, 2011
UNICEF reports that about 800,000 global deaths occur each year from malaria infection, with approximately 90 per cent of these deaths occurring in Africa.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has said that about 300,000 Nigerians die of malaria infection every year.

The director of the agency’s Field ‘A’ Office, Enugu, Charles Nzuki, told journalists in Makurdi, Benue State, that over 97 per cent of Nigeria's population were at risk of the disease, with most victims being children under the age of five.

Nkuzi said that the federal government was keeping up with the fight against infant mortality by making provision for appropriate malaria treatment through the implementation of the Affordable Medicines for Malaria (AMFM) and the distribution of 63 million insecticidal nets.

He, however, said that more needed to be done in order to confront the threat malaria poses to the nation.

UNICEF reports that about 800,000 global deaths occur each year from malaria infection, with approximately 90 per cent of these deaths occurring in Africa where malaria accounts for about one-sixth of

every such deaths.
