Nairaland GeneralI Was United Scapegoat - Fellaini by Wefiak1414(op): 2:19pm On Nov 19, 2014
Manchester United
midfielder Marouane
Fellaini has claimed that
he was made to feel like
a scapegoat for his team's
struggles during the 2013-14 season, in
remarks published on
Tuesday. Fellaini followed
manager David Moyes from Everton to Old
Trafford last year in a £27.5 million ($43.6
million, 35.1 million euros) transfer, but failed to
impress as the club slipped to a disappointing
seventh-place finish in the Premier League. The gangly Belgium international with the afro
haircut did not manage to score in his debut season
and became an object of derision for rival
supporters, but he has improved under Moyes's
successor, Louis van Gaal. Asked if he felt he had been made a scapegoat for
United's failings under Moyes, the 26-year-old
told reporters at a sponsors' event: "Yes, a little bit.
That is a difficult question. It is difficult to
answer that." He added: "I didn't lose faith in myself. In
football, you have to be strong in the head. The
mentality is important and I do have this quality, so
I can keep going. "My family helped me through it. I was also in the
national team for Belgium at the World Cup and I
played well and the team also played well. For my
confidence that was important. I came back after the
summer confident. "The manager (Van Gaal) said to me I would have to
fight if I wanted to play. I did fight and trained
hard and that was it. When I got my chance, I tried
to show myself and tried to do my best."

SportsEagles Rescue AFCON Hopes by Wefiak1414(op): 7:59pm On Nov 15, 2014
Abuja - Defending champions Nigeria beat Congo
Brazzaville 2-0 on Saturday to revive their bid to
qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as
South Africa and Cameroon ensured their presence
in the finals. Second-half goals by Ikechukwu Uche and Aaron
Samuel against Congo in Pointe-Noire boosted
Nigeria's prospects of making it to Equatorial
Guinea, who stepped in as hosts on Friday in place
of barred Morocco. Nigeria now have to beat group leaders South
Africa in Uyo on Wednesday to ensure automatic
qualification behind Bafana Bafana regardless
of Congo's result in Sudan also on Wednesday. Villarreal striker Uche celebrated his long-
awaited return to the Super Eagles in style when in
the 59th minute he tucked away a penalty after
Congo goalkeeper Massa fouled goal-bound
Emmanuel Emenike. Congo failed to draw level in the 65th minute,
when Vincent Enyeama saved a penalty taken by
Thievy Bifouma after Godfrey Oboabona handled
a goal-bound shot inside his box. Substitute Aaron Samuel then made the game safe
for Nigeria a minute to full time when he struck
from inside the box
SportsMorocco Barred From Next Two Nations Cups by Wefiak1414(op): 7:51pm On Nov 15, 2014
Paris - Morocco will be barred from the next two
Africa Cup of Nations as punishment for
refusing to host the 2015 edition in January-
February, Confederation of African Football
president Issa Hayatou has said on Saturday. "We are going to stick to the rules, that means
elimination from the next two Nations Cups,"
Hayatou told France's L'Equipe sports daily. "On top of that there will be the financial and
moral damages to calculate." Morocco are facing a $20 million fine for
refusing to host the 2015 Cup in its scheduled 17
January - 8 February 8 slot over fears of the
spread of the deadly Ebola epidemic to the
popular tourist destination, Morocco's Le Matin
newspaper suggested this week. The north African state had called for the Cup to
be postponed, but organisers CAF rejected their
request, stripping them of their position as hosts
and barring them from playing in the continental
showcase. Oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, which co-hosted the
2012 edition with Gabon, were named as Morocco's
replacement as hosts for the troubled 2015
tournament on Friday. Aside from the former Spanish colony in west
Africa who now qualify automatically, three
countries are assured of their place in the troubled
2015 Cup - Tunisia, Algeria and Cape Verde
Islands. There are 12 qualifiers scheduled for Saturday
with defending champions Nigeria needing a
victory in Congo Brazzaville to have a realistic
chance of qualifying.
EducationDidn’t Have To Read All Night To Make A First Class" by Wefiak1414(op): 7:36pm On Nov 15, 2014
Ibrahim Olatunde who emerged the best graduating
students of crescent university with a cumulative
grade point of 4.76 in Computer Science recently in an
interview revealed that while many students stay up
at night to read, he usually study in the day as he
doesn’t joke with his night sleep. According to him, he did not allow his desire to
become a first class student which was inspired by
the 2010 best graduating student, Fatimot Ajagbe, a
female to get in the way of his social life in school
as he usually create time any time his pocket was fat
to have a good time. Ibrahim also said that though he had a girlfriend in
school, this never one day disturbed his studies as the
girl was very understanding. When asked whether he would get married to the
girl, he said getting his Master’s and PhD are his
priorities right now.
SportsAfrican Footballer Of The Year/ Past Watch The Difference. Vote Vincent Enyeama by Wefiak1414(op): 7:09am On Nov 12, 2014
The five-man shortlist for the BBC African
Footballer of the Year 2014 has been revealed. Title holder Yaya Toure has been nominated for the
sixth consecutive year, along with Pierre-Emerick
Aubameyang, Yacine Brahimi, Vincent Enyeama and
Gervinho. The winner will be decided by fans of African
football, who have until 18:00 GMT on Monday,
24 November to vote for their choice. You can vote online here. Or to vote for BBC African Footballer of the Year
2014 by SMS, text the number of the player you
wish to vote for to +447786202008. Text 1 for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Text 2 for Yacine Brahimi Text 3 for Vincent Enyeama Text 4 for Gervinho Text 5 for Yaya Toure Standard international text rates apply. Please check
with your service provider. SMS votes are limited to
one vote per mobile phone number. Terms and conditions apply. The winner will be announced on Monday, 1 December. Four of the nominees played at this summer's World
Cup in Brazil, where for the first time in the
tournament's history two African sides made it out of
the group phase. Goalkeeper Enyeama played in the last 16 of the tournament with Nigeria, while Brahimi reached the
same stage with Algeria. Enyeama, 32, went into the event off the back of an
outstanding campaign for French club Lille - he
kept 21 clean sheets for them last season. In Spain, forward Brahimi's efforts for Granada led to him being named best African player in the
country last term and earning a move to Porto. Both players carried their excellent club form into
the showpiece finals and caught the eye with superb
performances - as did Ivory Coast forward Gervinho. The Roma player has been a revelation in Italy since
leaving English Premier League side Arsenal,
scoring 10 goals in 39 games for the Serie A side. He and his compatriot Toure did not make it out of their group in Brazil, but on a personal note both
have enjoyed impressive seasons. Midfielder Toure helped guide Manchester City to
their second Premier League title in three years. He
also won the Capital One Cup. Although striker Aubameyang did not play at Brazil 2014 - because Gabon did not qualify - he
makes the shortlist for the second year in a row
thanks to his club form. The 25-year-old has settled in his second season
with German side Borussia Dortmund and his
improvement has been particularly noticeable in the
Champions League, where he has already scored
three times in the current campaign. Previous winners of BBC African Footballer of the Year award: 2013 - Yaya Toure (Manchester City & Ivory Coast) 2012 - Chris Katongo (Henan Construction & Zambia) 2011 - Andre Ayew (Marseille & Ghana) 2010 - Asamoah Gyan (Sunderland & Ghana) 2009 - Didier Drogba (Chelsea & Ivory Coast) 2008 - Mohamed Aboutrika (Al Ahly & Egypt) 2007 - Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal & Togo) 2006 - Michael Essien (Chelsea & Ghana) 2005 - Mohamed Barakat (Al Ahly & Egypt) 2004 - Jay-Jay Okocha (Bolton & Nigeria) 2003 - Jay-Jay Okocha (Bolton & Nigeria) 2002 - El Hadji Diouf (Liverpool & Senegal) 2001 - Sammy Kuffour (Bayern Munich & Ghana) 2000 - Patrick Mboma (Parma & Cameroon)

Nairaland GeneralThe Need To Stop Cultism by Wefiak1414(op): 11:52am On Nov 11, 2014
The solid existence of cult groups within the
university community, towns and villages has
completely made the environment unsafe for both
staff, students and other people in the
environment. Youths in the country involves
themselves with cults in other to be identified as relevant authorities. These cults usually fight to
advance the selfish rights and privileges of their
members which include passing examinations,
acquiring girl friends, accommodation and to
intimidate. The possible effects of cultism on
youths cannot be exhausted as both intra and inter- cult clashes negatively affect them in stupendous
proportions. Also read: Cult clashes in Ogun result in 2 deaths Cult clashes leads to an outburst of violence on the
campus which may leave the students wounded,
and same to the villagers, just as many could be
dead too as the case may be. Some cult clashes are
so catastrophic that loss of infrastructure and
other resources will be colossal and eventually the funds that would have been spend on the
provision of other facilities and infrastructure on
the campus will be used in replacing damaged
ones. The result of waste of capital is the
reduction of quality and quantity of education.
Realising the havoc which cultism has wrecked on youths, all hands must be on deck to check their
activities. It is therefore imperative on the part of
the societies and the university communities in
Nigeria. We need to shun violence and shift
attention on positive societal values which will
enhance positive growth. God bless Sha
Nairaland General16 Strange Law Around The World by Wefiak1414(op): 11:45am On Nov 11, 2014
You’d be surprised to know what has been and
what is currently against the law in some countries
around the globe. Have a look at these rather odd
laws: USA In Connecticut, it’s illegal to let someone copy your
homework. The statutes explicitly prohibit selling
essays, dissertations, etc. at any education facility
supervised by the state. So, I guess it’s okay at
private schools then? In Florida, bar owners (or anyone who owns a
commercial establishment where alcohol is sold,
for that matter) could be fined $1 000 (over R11
000) if they permit or participate in dwarf-
tossing contests. (We don't think that it's crazy
that dwarf-tossing is illegal. It's crazy that it was prevalent enough so that a law had to be made
against it. Seriously people. Dwarf tossing? No.) In Minnesota, any game in which participants
attempt to capture a greased-up or oiled-up pig is
illegal. We’re not sure why this is a thing. I’m not going to Mississippi any time soon.
Apparently, swearing in front of two or more
people in public could get you sent to the chookie
for up to a month - or you could pay a fine. Thailand No one is permitted to step on any form of the
national currency as all bills and coins display a
picture of the king’s face. Singapore Here, it’s illegal to walk around your own home
naked, as it’s considered pornographic (yes, porn
is also illegal). If you break this law, you could
be fined or 3 months in prison. Oh, and if “a
person who is clad in such a manner as to offend
against public decency or order” is around, they will also be thrown in jail. The sale of gum is also prohibited in Singapore.
While it’s not illegal to chew gum, disposing of
it improperly will get you a massive fine. Cambodia You can’t use a water gun when celebrating the
New Year, as some participants used to fill it
with sewage. The funniest part? If you’re found
with a water gun, it will be confiscated, but that’s
it. No jail time. No fine. United Kingdom In England, it’s legal for a male to urinate in
public, as long as it’s on the rear wheel of his
vehicle and his right hand is placed somewhere on
his vehicle. By law, all cab drivers still need to check with
their passengers if they have smallpox or the
plague. A boy under the age of 10 is legally not
supposed to ever see a naked mannequin. Oh the
horror! Throughout the whole of England it is illegal to
eat mince pies on Christmas Day. At Christmas of
all days?! Canada In Petrolia, Ontario, "yelling, shouting, hooting,
whistling or singing is prohibited at all times."
Shame. All business signs in Quebec must be written in
French, according to the law. If you want it in
English, that’s cool, as long as the English sign
is twice as small as the French one. In Halifax, taxi drivers “absolutely cannot wear a
t-shirt” according to this law. Philippines This is my favourite one so far. In the
Philippines, an ‘annoying’ person can actually be
fined for being annoying. The second paragraph
of Article 287 states that “any other coercions or
unjust vexations shall be punished by arresto
menor (imprisonment for from one day to thirty days) or a fine ranging from 5 pesos to 200
pesos, or both.”

Health10 Sign You Are Dying by Wefiak1414(op): 9:31am On Nov 11, 2014
No one can predict the moment of death . But physicians and nurses involved in end-of-life
care know that certain symptoms are usually
associated with the body's shutting down. These
signs of approaching death are specific to the
natural dying process (apart from the effects
of particular illnesses the person may have). Not all dying symptoms show up in every
person, but most people experience some
combination of the following in the final days
or hours:
1. Loss of appetite Energy needs decline: The person may begin to
resist or refuse meals and liquids, or accept only
small amounts of bland foods (such as hot
cereals). Meat, which is hard to digest, may be
refused first. Even favorite foods hold little
appeal. Near the very end of life , the dying person may be physically unable to swallow. How to respond: Don't force-feed; follow the
person's cues even though you may be distressed
by a loss of interest in eating. Periodically
offer ice chips, a popsicle, or sips of water.
Use a moistened warm cloth around the mouth
and apply balm to the lips to keep them moist and comfortable.
2. Excessive fatigue and sleep: The person may begin to sleep the majority of
the day and night as metabolism slows and the
decline in food and water contribute to
dehydration. He or she becomes difficult to
rouse from sleep. The fatigue is so pronounced
that awareness of immediate surroundings begins to drift. How to respond: Permit sleep. Avoid jostling
the person awake. Assume that everything you
say can be heard, as the sense of hearing is
thought to persist, even when the person is
unconscious, in a coma, or otherwise not
responsive.
3. Increased physical weakness: A decline in food intake and lack of energy
leads to less energy, even for activities like
lifting one's head or shifting in bed. The
person may even have difficulty sipping from
a straw. How to respond: Focus on keeping the person
comfortable.
4. Mental confusion or disorientation Organs begin to fail, including the brain:
Higher-order consciousness tends to change.
"Few conditions leave people hyperaware when
they're dying," says palliative-care physician
Ira Byock, author of Dying Well. The person may not be aware of where he or she
is or who else is in the room, may speak or reply
less often, may respond to people who can't be
seen in the room by others (see Passing Away: What to Expect When Witnessing a Loved One's
Death), may seem to say nonsensical things, may be confused about time, or may act restless and
pick at bed linens. How to respond: Remain calm and reassuring.
Speak to the person softly, and identify
yourself when you approach.
5. Labored breathing Breath intakes and exhales become raggedy,
irregular, and labored: A distinctive pattern
called Cheyne-Stokes respiration might be heard:
a loud, deep inhalation is followed by a pause
of not breathing (apnea) for between five
seconds to as long as a full minute, before a loud, deep breath resumes and again slowly
peters out. Sometimes excessive secretions create loud,
gurling inhalations and exhalations that some
people call a "death rattle." How to respond: The stopped breathing or loud
rattle can be alarming to listeners, but the dying
person is unaware of this changed breathing;
focus on overall comfort. Positions that may
help: the head slightly elevated with a pillow,
sitting up well-supported, or the head or lying body tilted to the side slightly. Moisten the
mouth with a wet cloth and moisturize with lip
balm or petroleum jelly. If there's a lot of phlegm, allow it to drain
naturally from the mouth, since suctioning it out
can increase its quantity. A vaporizer in the room
might help. Some people are given oxygen for
comfort. Be a calm, physical presence, stroking
the arm or speaking softly
6. Social withdrawal : As the body shuts down, the dying person may
gradually lose interest in those nearby. He or
she may stop talking or mutter unintelligibly,
stop responding to questions, or simply turn
away. A few days before receding socially for the
last time, the dying person sometimes surprises
loved ones with an unexpected burst of alert,
attentive behavior. This can last less than an
hour or up to a full day. How to respond: Be aware that this is a natural
part of the dying process and not a reflection
of your relationship. Maintain a physical
presence by touching the dying person and
continuing to talk, if it feels appropriate,
without demanding anything back. Treasure an alert interlude if and when it occurs, because it's
almost always fleeting.
7. Changes in urination Little going in (as the person loses interest in
food and drink) means little coming out:
Dropping blood pressure, part of the dying
process (and therefore not treated at this point,
in tandem with other symptoms), also contributes
to the kidneys shutting down. The concentrated urine is brownish, reddish, or tea-colored. Loss of bladder and bowel control may happen
late in the dying process. How to respond: Hospice medical staff
sometimes decides that a catheter is necessary,
although not in the final hours of life. Kidney
failure can increase blood toxins and contribute
to a peaceful coma before death. Add a bed pad
when placing fresh sheets.
8. Swelling in the feet and ankles: As the kidneys are less able to process bodily
fluids, they can accumulate and get deposited in
areas of the body away from the heart, in the
feet and ankles especially. These places, and
sometimes also the hands, face, or feet, take on a
swollen, puffy appearance. How to respond: Usually no special treatment
(such as diuretics) is given when the swelling
seems directly related to the dying process. (The
swelling is the result of the natural death
process, not its cause.)
9. Coolness in the tips of the fingers and toes In the hours or minutes before death, blood
circulation draws back from the periphery of
the body to help the vital organs: As this
happens, the extremities (hands, feet, fingers,
toes) become notably cooler. Nail beds may also
look more pale, or bluish. How to respond: A warm blanket can keep the
person comfortable, or he or she may be
oblivious. The person may complain about the
weight of coverings on the legs, so keep them
loose.
10. Mottled veins Skin that had been uniformly pale or ashen
develops a distinctive pattern of purplish/
reddish/bluish mottling as one of the later
signs of death approachin: This is the result
of reduced blood circulation. It may be seen first
on the soles of the feet. How to respond: No special steps need to be
taken. Note: These general signs of impending death
can vary in sequence and combination from person
to person. If a person is on life support
(respirator, feeding tube), the process dying
follows can be different. The signs of death
listed here describe a natural dying process.
