Health / Are Nigerian Pharmacists Practicing Below Their Capacities? by wellahealth: 1:18pm On Sep 17, 2015
From Swank Pharm

To become a pharmacist, one must undergo a competitive selection process. This process will more often than not, select individuals that are on average, more intelligent and studious than the average population. After this selection process, the individual then undergoes years of training and practice before finally being allowed to interact independently with the public.

At the stage of independent practice, the pharmacist has gained a trove of knowledge on a vast number of drugs, their uses and their effects on the human body among other things. This depth of knowledge on medications is largely unrivaled by any other profession. As a result the pharmacist takes the pride of place as the custodian of ‘poisons’ in society, the referral point for the general public on what to ingest to preserve and prolong health and well being.

It has however become most alarming in recent times that the pharmacist’s role has been relegated to that of a mere dispenser or less euphemistically – a shop attendant. While there are several reasons for this development, one cannot look past the practice of some pharmacists. I was told recently of a pharmacist who didn’t ask his clients too many questions for fear that his patients who may know more than him, find him lacking in knowledge. Also stories abound of pharmacists putting business interests above the well being of their patients.

This diminished role of the undoubtedly skilled pharmacist is most discouraging and unsafe for the general public. The onus is on every pharmacist to step up and put excellent pharmaceutical care as foremost in their practice. Endeavor to do the following:

Check out our blog post detailing 7 tips for better asthma control

http://blog.wellahealth.com/2015/06/24/better-asthma-control/

Asthma is a chronic (long term) respiratory condition that affects many Africans. It occurs when one’s lung gets inflamed on exposure to certain materials. Common symptoms include: difficulty breathing, coughing, chest tightness. Asthma can be quite deadly so it’s important to keep it under control. We present 7 tips below to help you do so.

1. Know your trigger

Asthma is often triggered by things in the environment. Attempt to find out what it is for you and try and avoid it. Ensure your home is clean and ventilated, keep air conditioner filters free of dust, avoid dusty or smoky areas.

2. Don’t smoke

This seems obvious but quite a number of people living with asthma are smokers. Smoking damages an already compromised lung. Stay away from it and avoid second hand smoking from people who smoke.

3. Know your peak flow...

Your solution lies in visiting a reputable doctor who will carry out a proper history and examination and advice you accordingly.

Be wary of any solution you get here as they will be unlikely to be applicable to your situation.

Parasitic:
I wrote this as a piece of advice. Kidney failure is rampant this days, its a no respecter of humans, coz it affects both toddler, teens, adults, man, woman, rich or poor. Mostly its are a result of uncontrolled hypertension n diabetes. Its important for everyone to go for medical checkup occssionally. Most times its undetectable until the person is down by then its too late. Its a very costly illness to manage. Infact without cash its a death sentence. So my brothers and sisters let us moderate what unhealthy foods we consume. I was having a sober reflection after series of cases I see today. I am living today is by Gods grace. Thank God for medical advances too.

Thank God for your life! Thank you also for sharing your story. Not many brave enough. would love to work together to spread awareness particularly as this month is kidney month. please email us at contact [at] wellahealth [dot] com
Nairaland / General / 5 Nigerian Superstitions And Beliefs That Will Kill You Before Your Time by wellahealth: 10:08am On Feb 28, 2015
from blog.wellahealth.com

Witchcraft

Femi don die oh! Na witch kill am! Trouble is Femi was fat, a smoker, suffered from undiagnosed diabetes and suddenly had a fatal heart attack.

You’d think that with all the ‘unbelievers’ in the western countries they’d have plenty of witches killing people anyhow, yet they live to over age 80, while Nigerians live to only age 50.

Please attend a qualified doctor to use his modern miracles (that can make the lame walk and the blind to see) to fight these ‘witches’ killing Nigerians.

God forbid/ not my portion

Heart attack – ‘God forbid’

Stroke – ‘not my portion’

Pray tell how do you think you will die? or you hope to live forever? We all will die one way or another, often times it will be as a result of disease. So ‘reject’ as much as you want but still visit your doctor for an annual check up! We have been blessed with great scientific knowledge that will prevent disease and prolong your life, don’t be a fool, use it!

Prayers

Ever hear of the couple that couldn’t give birth, prayed hard then suddenly had triplets. My people that prayer is called IVF! God has blessed us with science and brains to solve our problems.

If you have a health problem go to a qualified doctor not a pastor. Your prayer should be for God to open the mind of the doctor to be able to find the solution to your problem. When you do get a solution, thank God and don’t forget to thank the doctor.

'What i don’t know won’t kill me'

It will, trust me on this one!

'Not in my family'

‘I can’t have diabetes it is not in my family’

Ok, so that BMW you are driving, was it in your family before?

That air conditioned office you’re sitting in all day was it in your family before?

That burger, chips and fried chicken your are eating was it in your family before?

Oh so you want the new good things but not the bad ones!

My people it doesn’t work like that. Go out and exercise, eat healthy, get an annual check up before you become the pioneer of diseases in your family.

There you have it, 5 Nigerian superstitions that will kill you before your time. Please share it as you may save someone’s life.

Travel / 5 Tips To Make Your Health Travels Smoother by wellahealth: 11:55pm On Feb 03, 2015
From http://wellahealth.

With the poor state of the health system in several countries, many people have resorted to travelling to other areas to get better health care. Use the following tips to make the experience of health tourism a smoother one.

1. Get as much information as possible

Prior to your trip, find out what hospital you'll be going to, who'll be doing any procedures on you and if they're suitably qualified and equipped. Seek testimonials from people previously treated that are similar to you. Also, it's often best to seek a second opinion locally before proceeding to somewhere foreign to make sure the trip is indeed warranted.

2. Budget

Make sure you have enough funds to cover your travel, stay, hospital bills and other sundry expenses. Remember particularly that you may need to include a period of time for recovery after a procedure or treatment course.

3. Inform friends and family

Ensure your friends and family know exactly where you'll be staying and how long for. Give them contact details of the hospital and health professionals both locally and abroad. Make sure to check in with them often while away. It is often advisable to go with a trusted companion or friend.

4. Bring your health records

Bring all your health details along with you. All previous hospital visits, letters, medications, lab results. Virtually everything related to your health you can get your hands on. This is to aid your treatment and ensure your treating professionals have all your previous history at their disposal.

5. Plan for and arrange follow up care

After your treatment, ensure you take note of any instructions given. Also find out how you can access any follow up care and who to contact in the event of any complications.

Apply these tips and you'll have a better experience when travelling for health care.

Contact us at wella health, email us at contact [at] wellahealth [dot] com or call us on +234 905 107 9700 for help with any of the above tips.

Managing Diabetes, Things to Keep Track of

JANUARY 31, 2015

So you have diabetes, what things do you need to keep track of to prevent the adverse effects of the disease.

1. Your heart

Diabetes increases your risk of heart attacks and other heart diseases. Manage your risk by keeping track of your blood sugars and other risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking. Make sure to have a healthy diet and exercise on most days of the week.

2. Your Kidneys

Diabetes damages kidneys to the extent of some needing dialysis (an artificial kidney). Check your kidney function with blood tests regularly to keep track of its decline.

3. Your legs

Diabetes damages the blood vessels in the legs, this reduces circulation, promotes infections and impairs healing of wounds. Watch out for any pain in your legs when walking, report this to your health provider.

4. Your nerves

Your nerves don’t like the excess sugar in your blood. They can become dysfunctional when exposed to it for too long. Monitor the feeling in your feet in particular and protect your feet at all times.

5. Your eyes

The back of the eye can be damaged by diabetes. Undergo a regular eye exam and keep track of any changes that happen over time.

Family / Improve Your Health Care With These 5 Tips by wellahealth: 12:51am On Jan 31, 2015
From our blog http://wellahealth.

HEALTH INSURANCE

First thing is to sign up for health insurance from the National Health insurance scheme www.nhis.gov.ng. They provide health plans via HMO’s (health maintainance organizations). Do this when you are well so when you fall sick you don’t use up all your savings paying from your pocket. Insurance helps spread the cost of care and gives you access to more expensive treatments than would otherwise be available. The NHIS website has a list of accepted hospitals in the various states.

SELECT THE RIGHT PLACE

Get recommendations from local websites such as http://www.healthpages.com.ng and from people who have had a similar problem to you. Ask them where they went to and how they found out to go there. Ask them what their experience was like, who they saw and what the outcome was. Talk to enough people and you get a general trend of where to avoid and where to possibly go.

PLAN AHEAD

When you do select a hospital, call ahead of time to find out when and where the clinics are and attend early. If you have a problem you’re unsure of, attend a general clinic. They can usually treat you or point you in the direction of a specialist if one is needed. Attend a paediatric clinic if for a child and a obstetrics or gynaecology clinic if for pregnant woman or womanly issues respectively.

BE PREPARED

Think about what you plan to discuss with the doctor before hand and write it down. Make sure to highlight what is your biggest problem and how long its been going on for. Frame in your mind what outcome you want from your visit to the doctor. Vague patients usually don’t get as good an outcome as clear, thoughtful patients. Also, think of any questions you may have and write them down. Avoid ‘Dr google’ for now, It’s usually better to consult google after you have seen your doctor and discussed your symptoms and the possible diagnoses.

BRING PREVIOUS DETAILS

If you have attended other doctors or hospitals in the past, bring all the letters, reports, blood results and medications you have. Without this information you will be handicapping your doctor a great deal.

Implement the above tips and you will see the quality of health care you receive improve vastly.
