Health / Rapid Malaria Test And Treat Service Launched In Abuja by wellahealth: 2:14am On Apr 28, 2018
Nigerian e-health startup WellaHealth has launched a new rapid malaria testing service to market in partnership with a network of local pharmacies around Abuja.

Launched in 2015, WellaHealth provides a pharmacy automation system delivered via mobile, which deals with back-end management such a stock taking, electronic patient records, drug labelling and information, as well as allowing pharmacists to follow up with patients by SMS.

The startup has now launched a new service aimed at tackling malaria diagnosis and treatment; citing the falling success of malaria treatment in Nigeria – a country which it says is responsible for 27 per cent of malaria cases worldwide.

Patients experiencing potentially malarial symptoms can visit the WellaHealth website, enter their symptoms, and request a rapid malaria test. The platform directs them to the nearest available pharmacy, which will be waiting to perform a malaria test and confirm a diagnosis.

WellaHealth says thanks to the system, patients can obtain a test result within 15 minutes.

The pharmacies involved provide malaria care kits to patients with the relevant medication on the spot when diagnosis is confirmed.

Following diagnosis and treatment at a pharmacy, follow up SMS’s are sent to ensure full recovery from malaria or onward referral to a health facility if symptoms persist.

“Malaria presents a huge burden to individuals and businesses through lost man hours. Our service provides speedy, convenient malaria testing and treatment that enables a quick recovery and an early return to full productivity. Traditionally, one would need to go to a clinic and wait for hours to get test and treatment. With us, it’s all done at a local pharmacy in 15 minutes and we follow the user up via mobile to confirm recovery,” says Dr Ikpeme Neto, founder of WellaHealth.

The new malaria service can also be booked via a phone call, WhatsApp, or on Facebook Messenger.

Health / Hypertension Has A New Definition by wellahealth: 2:31pm On Nov 17, 2017
There has been a new change in the definition of hypertension.

Up until now, hypertension has been defined as blood pressure of greater than 140/90.

This has now changed on recommendations from the American college of cardiology and American heart association.

They are advising now that hypertension be defined as a blood pressure of greater than 130/80.

This will mean millions of more people will have hypertension and need treatment. Health care professionals need to start testing more people today, as, under these new guidelines, millions of new people will now have hypertension.

If someone is found to be hypertensive, encourage them to treat it via lifestyle changes and medications as to prevent heart attack strokes and kidney disease.

If you're like the average person, this can be 3-4 times yearly.

Add up all the time you wait at the clinic that could amount to over a day.

Not to mention the effort it requires when you feel sick.

This is why we came up with a rapid malaria test and treat service available at www.wellahealth.com

Via the site, you can book a rapid malaria test and treatment near you.

It takes less than 15 minutes after you arrive at our partner location for you to get your test and drugs.

Health / Fast Malaria Test And Treatment Near You by wellahealth: 3:03pm On Oct 25, 2017
If you're like us, you get several bouts of malaria a year. Whenever someone on our team gets malaria it takes up so much time and energy. First one has to go to the clinic, be referred for a test and then come back to collect a prescription for drugs. One then must go to the pharmacy to buy the drugs before taking it, sometimes forgetting to even take it.

Sometimes it's tempting to skip the clinic and go straight for the pharmacy but the illness might turn out to be something other than malaria. Leaving one sicker for longer and increasing resistance to malaria.

We've come up with a solution to help. Now you can get genuine malaria test and treatment at a pharmacy near you. The process takes less than 15 minutes and you're promised an excellent experience from start to finish.

Order you're malaria care now at www.wellahealth.com

Health / There’s Blood In My Urine – Why Drug Interactions Matter by wellahealth: 9:41pm On Jul 31, 2017
Imagine that you wake up one morning not feeling too well. You begin to cough up green stuff and have some pain in your chest. You go to a doctor you don’t usually see and he diagnoses you with a chest infection. He asks you what previous medications you’re on but you didn’t bring them and can’t remember. He’s about to give you a prescription for augmentin, a penicillin. You quickly remember that you’re allergic to penicillin. He changes the prescription to clarithromycin.

You take this to your pharmacist who gives you the tablets with instructions on how to take it. You return home, take the medications for the next 3 days and then you start to see blood in your urine. You quickly search online for why this could be and you soon find that the clarithromycin your doctor put you on can make you pee blood if you usually take Warfarin.

A drug dictionary is where one would ordinarily think to go look for what medications mean and what they do. Pharmacists, however, do not use a drug dictionary per se. What they use is referred to as a formulary. The most commonly used formulary in most parts of the English speaking world, especially in the Commonwealth nations is the British National Formulary, abbreviated to the BNF.

Another important reference book is ‘Martindale, the complete drug reference’. It contains over 185,000 preparations and comes in 2 large copies. It can, however, be quite expensive and bulky. Hence the BNF is more widely used.

When you go to a pharmacy with a prescription for a new drug like clarithromycin, the pharmacist would need to collect a list of your previous medication. This enables her check to see if this new tablet has any drug-drug interaction with your regular tablets. In the instance above, if the pharmacy had your drug history, which they should, they would be able to cross check and detect that clarithromycin would lead to you bleeding while on warfarin. They would hence be able to advise you appropriately.

When filling prescriptions it’s important to reveal what drugs you usually take. Insist also that the pharmacy keeps a record. When adding new tablets, ask them to make sure no interactions take place with your usual medications. This process can often take a few minutes so be patient. It’s better to wait and get the right medications and advice than to rush out only to end up being rushed later to the hospital.

To help, refer your pharmacist to WellaHealth, we help them keep your drug records and check that all the medications you’re on don’t interact and are safe. If you’re a pharmacist reading this, get in touch by putting your phone number on our website and we will give you a call to set you up and start providing improved pharmaceutical care services to your patients.

Health / Re: National #nobraday: For The Hate Of Breast Cancer by wellahealth: 5:01pm On Oct 15, 2016
BuzzAss:
I used to have a girlfriend who wears like two layers of underwear before wearing her clothes. The bra goes first, then followed by a corset and then the clothes. I sometimes wonder, don’t you feel hot inside all of these? Considering the part of the world where we are from, the hustle and bustle of the day generate a lot of heat and even if I wasn’t told, I know that these babes feel hot deep beneath. Who would have thought today that we will be talking about NoBra day today.

A whole lot of folks don’t know what the nobra thing is all about. I am guilty. I probably wouldn’t have known if I didn’t have to write this. Some of us just think it’s a day of lets-free-our-nipples but it goes past that. It’s a day dedicated to raise breast cancer awareness among women.

While most celebrities in the western world, likes of Rihanna, Amber rose and Jennifer Aniston enjoy their lives without a bra, around here in Naija, don’t feel bad if someone looks at you with “one-kind” eye if you go braless.

The National #Nobraday awareness started back in October 2011. Currently, October 13 has been accepted as the annual nobra day, to sensitize women in Nigeria about the wicked breast cancer that has stolen the lives of many women from all across the world.

Breast cancer, which was seen before as a plague peculiar to developed nations, is fast finding its way into developing nations. According to World Health Organization (WHO), about 50% of cancer cases and 58% of deaths from these cancer cases happened in less developed nations. This makes the plague a no-respecter of status or location, it ravages and destroys as it wills.

The risks associated with breast cancer are ample and worse still, many don’t even know they have it until it has gotten to advanced stages. This is why it is recommended that all women above the age of 50 go for periodic medical check-ups as early detection appears to be the only way to beat this culprit.

Today left me wit a lot of mix feelings, but mainly disappointment. people fail to realise d .importance of this bra day. the perverts here were on rampage drooling over breasts some even went as far as begging for unclad. Some stupid girls kuku sexualized everything with silly tAlks. Una no una self. The main reason which is breast cancer was barely talked about. as we all know cancer is a killer, a lump which grows at a fast rate. It is usually fatal, but EARLY DETECTION is key. some of d ladies are sexually active but fail to do common self examination.Early detection increases survival chances. the following should be duly observed.

1. daily self examinations for lumps and hardness or growths.

2.swelling of the breasts.

3. niipple discharge.
Once these are seen it is advisable to you your doctor immediately.

Try to go braless as often as you can.
Never wear a very tight bra.
Never sleep with a bra.
Always put on a clean bra.
Pit on black bra's less, and white bra's more.

A mastectomy can stop the growth of cancer temporarily.
I might have just saved a life by this information.

Health / Re: Cancer Awareness Month, Kindly Raise Your Voice Not Your Bra (nobraday) by wellahealth: 4:58pm On Oct 15, 2016
morganstones:

I woke up early this morning dreading to go on social media, obviously not because of Apollo nor boil. Rather my fear is being orchestrated by the likely visual assaults innocent hearted men like me will face from teeming Nigerian ladies who would ditch their bra's today. For those who might be wondering when and where did this business of Nigerian ladies throwing away their most treasure 'Cosset' every 14th Of October. Just like many who take delight in joining the bandwagon of wearing red on red every February 14th (with most teenage girls looking like poorly kitted masquerade) without understanding the origin of Valentine's day. Similarly, chunk load of people misunderstand the basic idea of 'Cancer Awareness Month'. Every October people world over try as much as possible to raise global concern regarding cancer diseases. Since breast cancer is one of the most commonest cancer disease afflicting women across the world, with surgically removing the affected part as a likely survival tactics. Hence, the start of NoBraDay to show solidarity for breast cancer survivals. At the very inception this was indeed a noble gestures, but over the years Nigerian ladies have began to misrepresent this gesture to mean an opportunity to display various shades, sizes and shapes of pneumatic mammalian gland on social media(To much grammar to describe 'Breast').
We must learn to recognise the fact that there is an apparent need to raise concern about this painful scourge through sensitization and self breast examination. So for the matured minds rather than pulling off your bra today you can do the following.
*Carry out a personal breast self examination
*Visit the hospital for HPV test
*Decide to begin to eat healthy meals garnished with enough fruits and vegetables
*Once you discover an usual lump don't panic kindly visit your doctor
*Ditch your can foods for natural ones
Although it is in our habit to join trending event around. Certainly our choice is understandable but sincerely we must be matured enough to clothes ourselves when dancing happily within the market square.

Health / Do Pharmacists Really Care? by wellahealth: 5:37pm On Sep 24, 2016
The international pharmacy day is marked on the 25th of September every year. The theme this year is:

“Pharmacists: Caring for you”

Pharmacists want the general public to believe they care for their clients/ patients.

Is this really the case in Nigeria?

Many people who patronize pharmacies complain of not being treated nicely, being sold fake/ expired medicines or not getting the right advice.

Is this really the state of pharmacy practice now, poor care with a focus first on profit or do pharmacists really care.

What are your thoughts on the matter as either a pharmacist or someone who has been to a pharmacy.
