By Chinedu Eze In spite of the passenger surge on domestic routes this Easter holiday, Arik Air has said that it was yet to operate to full capacity. Arik operates 120 flights daily and airlifts over 12,000 passengers daily. The airline lamented that lack of airfield lighting at some of the nation’s airports made it inevitable that no airline can operate into such airports beyond 6:00 pm despite the fact that there were passengers travelling to such destinations. For instance, Arik said it increased its flights to Asaba airport from once a day to three times daily but its flights could not fly to Benin airport after 6:00 pm because for now it is a visual flight rule airport, which means that no aircraft can fly there in the night. According to the airline, it is the same with the airports in Yola, Owerri, Kaduna, Enugu and Ilorin. The Acting Deputy Managing Director of Arik Air, Ado Sanusi, told THISDAY that the airline was operating at just 60 per cent of its capacity, noting that the airline was capable of doing about 240 but presently doing 120 daily flights. Sanusi said that the airline's planes are currently being underutilised because they operate average of seven hours daily instead of 11 hours. “The airline has the capacity to cope with demands of domestic air travellers. With adequate infrastructure at the nation's airports, Arik can deploy its full capacity. We have 23 functional aircraft,” Sanusi said.
Sanusi also said the industry had significantly improved in terms of infrastructural renewal at the airports after many years of neglect and expressed the hope that the remodelling programme would be extended to the airport runways, especially in the provision of airfield lighting. The acting deputy managing director noted that within two years under the present administration, many of the airports now wear new look and commended the Federal Government for the upgrade of the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, which is the main operational facility of the airline. “There are a lot of things to be done in the industry to make it better through a deliberate policy of government where the airlines can have operational environment that will enhance their provision of services because aviation is the catalyst of economic development of every nation, but this administration should be commended for what it has done so far,” Sanusi said. The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, had recently assured that from this year till the end of 2014, all the airport runways would have airfield lighting and fully upgraded.

Defence Headquarters has said taht crude oil theft has dropped from 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 23,000. The Chief of Training and Operations, Maj.-Gen. Lawrence Ngubane, announced this in Bile, Okirika Local Government Area of Rivers, during a tour to some operational bases of the Joint Task Force (JTF). Ngubane, who held a closed-door meeting with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), said the decline was due to the JTF’s renewed strategy and commitment to the fight against illegal oil bunkering. “The level of oil theft has come down drastically; SPDC informed me that oil theft has reduced from 60,000 bpd to 23, 000 bpd. Our desire is that we should go below that. The Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs are doing everything possible to ensure that oil theft is reduced to the barest minimum in the interest of the country. So, the purpose of my visit is to go round and see the areas of operations within the country and also to see the troops helping us to conduct our operations in the Niger Delta.” Ngubane said the soldiers were contributing their quota for the progress of the nation’s economy through their commitment in eliminating illegal oil bunkering in the area. According to him, if Nigerians must get quality social services such as healthcare, electricity, roads and education, soldiers must protect pipelines from vandals and not involve themselves in corruption. He said any soldier found involved in corrupt practice would be sanctioned in accordance with the Army Code of Conduct. “Nigerian Army is known and respected globally for its professionalism and as such, would strive to sustain our positive rating,” he said. Ngubane said more gunboats, kit and other equipment would be provided to intensify the fight against illegal oil bunkering and sundry crimes in the region. The SPDC had on March 4th, claimed that the company was losing about 60,000 barrels of crude oil to criminals daily.

OMAJE4 hasnt been himself since the Jarus- Afam4ever brouhaha, the entire episode brought his youthful exuberance to the fore and everytime I've had to make complaints in the complaints section, OMAJE has been behind it and mostly for ridiculous reasons. I believe the mischief makers around here are well known and do not even try to conceal their intentions and mostly deserve the treatment meted out to them but I believe a good Mod should know to approach issues on a case by case basis. Why should anyone be banned for opening a thread that might be "construed" by some as ethnic bashing even when they have no prior history of indulging in such? I believe a mature Mod should know how to de-fuse such a thread without bruising anyone's ego - but not OMAJE, and he has a shocking history!
Some folks here "deserve" a little respect for their daily contributions, it takes a lot to make insightful contributions daily and sometimes when we err, all we may need could be just a little warning or a notice but surely not the outright ban the likes of OMAJE prefer, to make it worse, his extremely Sardonic posture and most times outright condescending silence leaves a whole lot to be desired. The selling of handouts and legouts was curbed without the intervention of the education ministry and I believe same can happen with textbooks. The respective schools Senate just have to draw a line between whats acceptable and what's not like it already is in some schools datsall!

The "human factor" like I said is always going to be the number one determinant but however it is, alarm bells are going to ring all over Nigeria's campuses seeing that every work regardless of what institution it was done in can now be subjected to independent and rigorous review to determine its originality. I tell you, with the mere knowledge that such stuff exists this close to home, Plagiarism especially at the highest level is about to pack its back within this shore.
