Sometime ago there was talk of converting the Makoko settlement to some kind of African Venice and you'd expect the hypocrite to embrace the idea but no way, this one went on a rampage weeks later destroying peoples homes in a senseless rampage that left entire families drifting in the lagoon for weeks without end. They've managed to gather their lives back and just when the future of their children seems to be under real helpful consideration, the pauper - hating governor is about to roll out the marine bulldozers again!
When in a few years this ids that are about to be denied basic education start robbing and bombing the rich hitherto pampered by Fashola and his band of elitists I hope his asslickers will recall how they all gradually sowed the wind. God help us all.

Lagos To Demolish Ultra Modern Makoko Floating School

THE Lagos state government has outlawed the ultra modern Makoko Floating School barely seven months after the construction started. The school that is expected to address perennial flooding that truncate access to education by children of the community may never be allowed to operate after-all. The three_storey building with an area of 220 metres was built on a foundation of 256 plastic drums and powered by solar panels suspended on the roof. It is aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, Goal II, which is to boost universal primary education. The floating school being built jointly by the residents of Makoko/Iwaya Waterfront community, Yaba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, United Nation Development Programme, UNDP and a private firm -NLE works, Nigeria, was expected to accommodate no fewer than 100 pupils and their teachers.
The founder of NLE, and promoter of the floating school, Mr. Kunle Adeyemi who spoke to Vanguard from his Netherland office, said that the structure would have served as an extension of the only existing school in the coastal community_ Whayinna Nursery and Primary school. Adeyemi said that the ground floor of the three_storey building serves as an open recreational space for the pupils during the day and as a public arena for community activities after school hours. While the first and the upper floors have classrooms that would have served primary classroom purposes. [b] Govt says it’s an illegal structure:
Speaking on government’s position on the school, the Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development in Lagos State, Prince Adesegun Oniru said; “The floating school has been illegal since inception. The owner of the floating school waited until there was a legal issue in the area before he commenced the construction of the school.” According to him; “So as far as that floating school is concerned, it was erected without the permission of the state government. “The simple answer to the floating school is that it is an illegal structure and it shouldn’t be there.” The commissioner said that its development will affect the government’s redevelopment plan for the area, saying “This wouldn’t deter us to abandon our plan for the area.”

Islamist militant group Boko Haram was paid more than $3m (£2m) before releasing a French family of seven, a Nigerian government report says. The confidential report, seen by Reuters news agency, does not say who paid the money. Both France and Cameroon deny paying a ransom while Nigeria has not commented on the issue. The French family, including four children, were captured in Cameroon in February and freed last week. They were handed over to the Cameroon authorities last Thursday. The Nigerian report also says that Cameroon freed some Boko Haram detainees as part of the deal, according to Reuters. If confirmed, transfer of such a significant amount of money given to Boko Haram could serve to strengthen the firepower of the group, the BBC's Will Ross in Lagos reports.
Over the past week, violence in northern Nigeria has escalated as suspected members of Boko Haram have targeted the army and police. Reports say more than 200 civilians have died in the violence. While the army is unable to prevent such attacks, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a committee to prepare the ground for offering an amnesty to the militants, our correspondent says.
The French family, who live in Yaounde, where Tanguy Moulin-Fournier worked for the French gas group Suez, had been returning from a holiday in the Waza National Park in northern Cameroon when they were kidnapped by gunmen on motorbikes on 19 February. Mr Moulin-Fournier, his wife Albane and four children, aged between five and 12, had been joined on their holiday by his brother Cyril. In a YouTube video released about a week after their capture, the militants demanded the release of prisoners in Cameroon and Nigeria. One of them also criticised French President Francois Hollande for sending troops to fight Islamist militants in northern Mali in January. The French-led operation in Mali has ousted the Islamist groups, including al-Qaeda's North African branch, from cities and towns in the vast desert region they had captured a year ago in the wake of a coup.
Boko Haram, which began its insurgency following a deadly crackdown on its members in 2009, had previously said it was not involved in hostage taking. It has usually followed a Nigerian agenda, and says it wants to establish an Islamic state. During its insurgency at least 2,000 people have been kill in northern and parts of central Nigeria.

13volts: Boko Haram is a product of Kanuri. Kanuri being a minority tribe in Nigeria. Mohammed Yusuf, Abubakar Shekau, Mamman Nur, Habibu Bama, Shuiabu Bama, Abu qaqa 2, Bakaka, Senator Sherrif, Senator Zannan & Senator Nndume are all Kanuris. Am Hausa, I don't understand a single word in Kanuri, half of Kanuris don't speak or understand Hausa. Yobe & Borno States are the only 2 Kanuri states in Nigeria, hence Boko Haram only 2stronghold. Kanuri are from Kanem Borno empire, we Hausa are from Othman Dan Fodio empire, so historically we are not the same. We Hausa are not in support of Boko Haram, we despise them, we exposed them. Having wonder why they suffered most in Kano state in terms of human & logistics. If a mare 25% of Hausa people by chance supported Boko Haram, the over 3 million Christians will not be calling Kano state home today. We are victim in this madness called Boko Haram, the Hausa-Fulani Muslims who are seen to be the culprits even in situations where they are victims; even the lacklustre performance of the Jonathan administration is attributed to the “evil Hausa”.

Boko Haram in the last few months have suspended attacks in Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa & Taraba and have concentrated their efforts in capturing Kano which seen as the nerve center of the North.

I was privilege to have visited JTF detention center in Kano, guess what? 90% of Boko Haram suspects under detention are Kanuris with the remaining % their Kano collaborators.

A greater % of non Kanuris Boko Haram members either killed or capture study or lived in Yobe or Borno.

More than 110 million Chinese-made condoms have been seized in Ghana after laboratory tests revealed they were faulty, Ghanaian officials have said. "There are holes in them and... the condoms burst easily," a Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) spokesman told the BBC. The condoms were being distributed free as part of an HIV/Aids prevention campaign by the Ghana Health Service. About 200 million of the faulty condoms are believed to have been imported into the country.
The BBC's Sammy Darko in the capital, Accra, says the condom packaging is silvery white with a red Aids ribbon incorporated into the design and the words "Be Safe" also in red. The FDA has issued an alert about their safety. Thomas Amedzro, head of drug enforcement at the FDA, said the condoms had been imported via Kenya from a Chinese manufacturer. All imported condoms are supposed to be tested by the FDA before distribution, he said. "Somehow there was a lapse; the batches of the condoms were not submitted as duly required for the appropriate testing to be conducted," he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. Anybody using them could be "exposed to sexually transmitted infections or be saddled with unwanted pregnancies", Mr Amedzro said. "You may not be able to see the holes with your naked eye but when you look at it under the microscope you can see holes," he said. About 230,000 people in Ghana are living with HIV They were also not adequately lubricated, the FDA said. Our reporter says the health service took delivery of the condoms in February this year, but they arrived in the country in the last quarter of 2012. "Since the alert went out, a number of individuals and organisations have already reported to us that they have stocks, which we are already retrieving," Mr Amedzro said. A publicity campaign was underway to ensure that all the other unsafe condoms were found, he added. Cameroon's Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary told the BBC the Moulin-Fournier family, including four children, were in good condition. In a video published on YouTube, militants from the Nigerian group Boko Haram had claimed to be holding them. The French president said France had not paid a ransom to free the family who are now in the capital, Yaounde. The family arrived at the French embassy with a heavy security escort, the AFP news agency reports. President Francois Hollande said secret talks had been taking place for the past few weeks to help secure their release, but the country had not paid a ransom, Reuters news agency reports. "France has not changed its position, which is not to pay ransoms," the agency quotes him as saying at a news conference in Paris. "I spoke to the father this morning... He told me how happy and relieved he was."
The release of the hostages was announced on national radio in Cameroon on Friday morning. The statement from the presidency said they had been handed over to Cameroon authorities late on Thursday. Both the Nigerian and French governments were thanked in the statement, but no further explanation was given about how they were freed.
