Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, believes that Nigerians of Igbo extraction are the only people in the country who can be predicted accurately, The Cable reports.

While delivering a lecture titled ‘Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at the Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African & African American Research, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, the poet described people from that part of the country as “greedy”.

“Igbos remained unrepentant and resolute towards their strategic objective of secession at worst; or a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction at best,” he said.

“The climax of MASSOB’s war against the Nigerian state was the call for sit-ins and civil disobedience that shut down markets and public services, as Igbos stayed at home in a symbolic gesture to assert Biafran independence. The call was honoured by governors in the two principal Ibo states, though without fanfare.

“The Igbos are probably the only group of Nigerians that you can predict with great accuracy whom they will vote for in an election, because they tend to put their votes where their stomachs take them; suffering as it were, from incurable money-mindedness, as they would stop at nothing in their quest for personal financial gain.”


Commenting on the result of Nigeria’s presidential election, Soyinka said the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan would have been “disastrous”, as Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s president-elect, is a better option.

“Muhammadu Buhari was the better of the two evils as the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan had been an unmitigated disaster and failure,” he said.

“It was a painful decision to tell people to vote Buhari, but the country needed a new beginning. I was more against Jonathan, than I was pro-Buhari.

“Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation witnessed time and time again under Jonathan, who was increasingly becoming intolerant of opposition in an escalating streak of impunity and authoritarian madness, which was most blatant and unconscionable.

“The ‘militricians’ – soldiers turned politicians in power – aren’t looking for excellence; their civilian cohorts are worse. Short cuts and how to circumvent the system for the profit of a few are the norm of governance. Those who do honest work are derided as lacking the skill to fit it. Ironically, things haven’t quite changed a bit after 16 years of democracy in the country.”

Prof Wole Soyinka had earlier asked that Nigerians should emulate Nelson Mandela and forgive the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, for the wrongs he committed during his past iron-fisted military regime.

President Goodluck Jonathan has been implicated in the awarding of multi-million dollars Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) contracts to two factitious firms, according to The Nation.

With less than a month to hand over, President Jonathan has come under scrutiny for making last minutes appointments
The contracts in question were said to have been awarded by the president to Messrs CTOW Terminal & Marine Services and Ibejige Services Limited, two unregistered ghost companies in defiance of due process.

The controversial contracts meant for the provision of third party towage services (TPTS) at Warri and Onne ports pilotage districts have come under intense scrutiny following revelations by sources close to the Federal Ministry of Transport (FMOT) in Abuja that the award of the contracts by NPA to the two firms did not follow due process .

Added to the fact that the companies are not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), they also do not have a known address.


Finding by The Nation, indicates that the president’s approval for the contracts was contained in a letter last year to the NPA through the Federal Ministry of Transport on August 14, 2014.

The short duration of three days in which the approval was made has also raised suspicion considering the bureaucracy that slows down such transactions.

Speaking on the controversial contract, a senior official of the NPA said: “Was the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) involved before the President gave his approval and the contract was awarded by NPA? What was the role of the supervising minister in this regard? Answers to these questions are very essential because if I am approving a contract to any company and my minister and the officials of the agency cannot verify for me whether the company is registered; then I don’t know what they are doing as the head of that organisation.

“If the President, who awarded the contract did not know, the Managing Director of NPA ought to seek confirmation from CAC and his head of legal department.

“With the award of this contract, the President, his minister and the sacked managing director of NPA have created a wrong impression before the in-coming administration that many other unregistered companies got multimillion dollar contracts under the out-going administration to siphon public fund.”

The controversies raised by the award of this contract appears to give credibility to the allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) a week ago that Goodluck Jonathan administration was involved in last last-minute looting of the nation’s resources through hurried recruitment into the public service and rushed privatisation of key financial institutions.

Popular Lagos Pastor Disappears With Member’s N10m

A popular pastor in Lagos identified as Timothy Gabriel has reportedly bolted with one of his church member’s N10million.

The church member (name withheld) had given the money to the pastor to pray over it before using it to start a business in Lagos.

The pastor resides at Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, where he also uses as his church.

According to PM News report, the victim with hopes of starting a new business had obtained the money as a loan from a bank with an interest.

It was learnt that before he went to get the loan from the bank, he had approached his pastor, who he regarded as his spiritual father. The pastor had informed him that he pray to God on his behalf so that the bank will give him the loan.

On getting the loan, he went to inform his spiritual father again. This time, the pastor asked him to bring the money, saying God revealed to him that the money was blood money and if he used it for the business he intended to use it for, it will be unsuccessful.


The pastor allegedly told him that he would anoint the money and pray over it for three days before he would be able to use for his new business.

The victim in obedience to his spiritual father took the money to him at his home at Jakande Estate which also serves as his church and was told to come back in three days’ time to collect the money.

On the third day, he returned to collect his money but met the shock of his life as the pastor had packed his property and fled with the money.

He then reported the matter to the police at Ejigbo.

Confirming the incident, police sources at the Ejigbo station said they are now on a manhunt for him.

Scandals have continued to rock the lives of some Nigerian pastors. Some have been accused of fraudulent activities while others have been accused of rape.

About a week ago, a 32-year-old pastor, Abel Benard Aniude of Trimphant Kings Assembly, Enugu, allegedly duped a 25-year-old woman, Ojiaku Chiamaka of N4 million.

NDLEA Nabs Pastor With Heroin

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, have arrested a Lagos pastor for drug trafficking, according to The Nation.

Making known details of the arrest to the press, Mr. Nsikak-Abasi Udoh, the NDLEA commander at the Enugu Airport, said the suspect, Daniel Lanre Akintola, 43, was found with 1.978kg of heroin concealed in a false bottom of his luggage.

He said: “Mr. Daniel Lanre Akintola unlawfully possessed 1.978kg of heroin while returning from Entebbe, a major town in Central Uganda. He wanted to abandon the luggage but we detected his intention.


“The drug was carefully concealed in a false bottom of his luggage. The second suspect is a businessman who had parcels of ephedrine weighing 51.5kg which he wanted to smuggle to Maputo, Mozambique.

Akintola, who claimed ownership of the bag containing heroin, said he was returning from a pastor’s conference.

Similarly, another suspect, Onwuegbusi Tochukwu Victor, 48, was also found with 51.5kg of ephedrine inside his luggage

This latest arrest comes few weeks after another Lagos-based pastor was arrested at the Murtala International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, for smuggling narcotics to South Africa.

I am not expecting 100% collection but we must collectively strive to hit at least 85% - 90% mark after massive campaigns in this direction by INEC, political parties and Civic Society Organizations. That is the only way to get citizens to ask questions about the way they are being governed and that is what real anti-corruption means.

You may not understand that democracy is an idea, if you read the writings of John Locke, you may just understand better that no democrat supports disenfranchisement by the State especially when the disenfranchised still desire to participate. The reason is because participation in the election process boosts the moral authority of the elected to take decisions on our behalf, including the right to sign the death warrant of death row inmates. What you seem to be saying is that we should leave out those 27 million eligible voters because they do not matter. I disagree with you. Have you wondered why the vote of a Professor in the University has equal voting weight as that of a stark illiterate of 18 years and above?

Most of the other points you presented are quite emotional. How can you be sure that some people registered multiple times? Each person's finger print is unique and they are run through the machines before production, so if people registered multiple times, they would have been identified at production.

You also sounded as though it does not matter if the IDPs are disenfranchised. What gives you the right to choose their next leaders for them? Voting is not just a civic right, it is a civic responsibility for a reason. Are you comfortable if elections are not held in the North East because of the ongoing campaign?

As for the talk of the President trying to delay the elections so that your candidate will not win, how does that even make sense to you? The elections will be tightly contested and any winner will likely not have a landslide. Believe otherwise at your peril. But whatever you believe, remember that if he had decided to act like Obasanjo, you will not be as hopeful of the victory of your candidate as you are today. At least, he gave you faith in the process that 'may' product your candidate as the preferred candidate.

Finally, my point remains that so far it still depend on us to ensure that more people get involved in the electoral process, we must make that happen.
