trillville: Singapore is not just multiethnic but also has people of different races and religion. They have no natural resources. Yet lee Kwan yew developed the land even though he destroyed press freedom. Check out China with its population size. They have almost no press freedom and yet they are the largest economy on earth today using GDP (ppp).
There is something funny most Nigerians do not realise. Culturally, most Nigerians today are very similar. Only the core northerners are a bit different but even their difference is not enough to say we are not one people. Why there is division amongst us is poverty and greed.
Even if we were all the same language, we will still divide ourselves based on complexion and the fair skin people will claim God blessed them with better skin so the crude should belong to them. It is poverty and greed.
What I am saying has happened in Africa before, just watch hotel Rwanda.
Check out this link to read on Rwanda Tutsi and Hutu.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/guide-to-the-zaire-crisis-the-difference-between-a-hutu-and-a-tutsi-1352558.html Bro, you misunderstood the Singapore scenario and their prime minister stance on the press which he overtime changed. The summary of his stance is thus; "It was always a fine balancing act, how to professionally serve our readers without appearing to undermine policy."...The press wasn't suppressed par say but were forced to place patriotism above partisanship and profit... http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/more-singapore-stories/story/press-freedom-was-fine-balancing-act-mr-lee-kuan-yew-201 |

What I am saying has happened in Africa before, just watch hotel Rwanda. 1)Forget movies and face realities bro...movies are edited stories sometimes of realities other times of pure imagination of author... 2)Singapore has a population as Lagos with about half of this again being foreigners...Nigeria is well over 150million as against 5million in Singapore... 3)We rarely have much similarities between any ethnic group...consider Igbo/Yoruba as an example... 4)Business entrepreneur was secret of Lee kuan of Singapore which is same as Youwin of Jonathan which APC never wanted... 5)Singapore has about 5ethnic groups...Nigeria has 250... 6)Singapore has 4 languages...Nigeria has over 250... 7)Singapore had trust for themselves and confronted external aggression united...Nigeria trust no one...fears and suspects themselves and confronts and betrays themselves before any aggression eg boko haram... I am not sure about this your story of lack of press freedom in Singapore with Lee kuan as prime minister... 9)Nigeria is diverse and these groups have nothing in common except that they are all humans... 10)I love your patriotism but the realities aren't same...thanks |

trillville: To be honest, I agree with most of what u are typing and I am not in anyway against the west. My point is simply, the west created their laws according to their culture, we as Nigerians also need to look inwards and develop our on laws and ways of doing things based on our culture.
I believe you will also agree with this point. Sure, we can make do with some adaptation but do remember our diversity is a big challenge here... |

trillville: Just open your mind and think! I am just simply challenging notions people consider as facts when in reality there is no evidence to prove them. I may be wrong or I may be right? What matters most is that I am thinking. Sure, I love your style...press can be a distraction really sometimes... but our political system in Nigeria is so open to abuse and corruption that killing the press is the best way to cover your tracks and lead a treacherous government... so Nigeria isn't ripe for such and may not ever be...check the dynamics in Nigeria such as our population, multiethnic group, multilingual, multicultural, multi religiosity, etc as against Singapore... it isn't same...Nigeria is a complex country with multiple problems and fragile cohesion... |

trillville: [quote author=trillville post=33424734]Does my epistle bring electricity and water to Nigerians? Is my ability to write my epistle more important than Nigeria getting electricity? Of what importance is my epistle to the average Nigerian?
I hope you are understanding my point now. Let us focus on the important stuff. Countries with little press freedom have electricity and drinking water. Let us get the basics right first. Bro, be sure that those needs you're harping on won't be actualized without the press. Press is the voice of the masses and government... Press is eyes of government... Press is the unofficial police of government and masses...Press is all...Democracy is not alien to our culture as you wrongly assumed in your post...Freedom of press/expression/speech will guarantee those stuff you desire because press will always keep government on their toes & hold them accountable especially opposition media groups...Without press freedom, you won't be on Nairaland...Any government that kills the press, kills wholesome development...Stop sounding "westernphobia"...Democracy isn't alien to Africa...freedom of expression isn't alien to us...let no man tamper with it including buhari.... |

trillville: Who defines democracy? The people or some imaginary being? Must we follow the western definition? We need to think differently and focus on important issues.
Lee Kwan yew did things his way, and he is praised, Deng xiaoping, did things his own way and he transformed China. We need to think differently as Nigerians. We can't just follow what another persons culture blindly, it never works out well. Let's focus on electricity and water abeg and leave this matter for Mathias. smh... do you understand what you're typing or what |

trillville: Senseless threads like this one brings tears to my eyes.
Barcanista, i have a few questions for you
What are the negative effects on the common Nigerian as a result of this supposed ban?
So because in the western world, press freedom is key characteristic of democracy, Nigeria must follow what is defined without any change as regards to our cultural differences?
If buhari bans all forms of press freedom but he gives Nigerians cheap electricity, clean drinking water, better medical facilities, security, jobs, etc, do you think he would be re-elected?
If your answer is no to the last question, please give sensible reasons.
I suggest you watch Mrs. Ezekwesili's interview at Oxford. Don't focus on her defence of obasanjo, but listen to her reasons for why Nigeria is as messed up as it is and also listen to her solutions. If you have time, read Ben Bruce's advice to buhari too.
Although press freedom is a really good thing, we should not make a mountain out of a molehill. Please let's focus on issues and criticise reasonably so we can all have a better Nigeria. Without press freedom, will you be here typing this epistle |

There are better stories than this Who are the 'we'?...why not use 'I' which is the appropriate word here for you?... Lalasticlala and other mods, kindly ignore anyone who's against moving this article to homepage. Press freedom, freedom of speech and expression can't be tampered with by incoming government. Hence, the extent of heat and pressure from different sources and individuals no matter how many will deter anyone with such heinous ambition of muscling and intimidating the press alongside citizenry. Save our democracy by moving this to homepage... thanks |

Balyz: Last year jonathan ordered state security agents to confiscate print copies of media publications he deemed hostile to his regime under the pretext of 'national security'. That way for days running, newsprint of media houses like dailytrust, leadership and the nation were seized en route to their distribution centres. It would be hypocritical of the TANoids to point an accusing finger at Buhari for a much lesser infringement on the freedom of the press. Lesser infringement |

dearpreye: Brethren, at this juncture, I'll painfully draw the curtain to a close. Even the owls are screeching!
Every once in a while, it's very healthy to lay aside the weight of hate, abuse, disrespect, name calling, and then adorn the garment of love, humanity and deep affection. It's befitting to sheathe the swords of war and put on the armour of grace and peace. Love elongates; hate shortens.
Let's embrace peace and all shall be well.
It's being fun!
