It baffles me as well. I concede it's progress but na by force? They shouldn't be supporting a religion that persecutes them in any way. Shades of stockholm syndrome, brainwashing, etc etc

Penrose is a well known, respected physicist. Sometimes a collaborator of hawkins. His work on consciousness and also gravity have virtually no support though, and they have been around for a while.

@pastor, I never actually noticed your contributions, thanks. What you say sadly brings money laundering to my mind. Then again, most 9ja does not really need to launder money, at least with effort

@serialoga, you brought the sword I hope? I concur that the estimates seem reasonable

On another note, if someone has some sort records that could perhaps be verified by a 3rd party, mayhaps somewhere like say a wikileaks could help? It's not entirely impossible.

In other news, this zahed guy is being silly. He is clearly not wanted in islamic societies, so why does he persist in trying to fit in? He should discard the whole nonsense, it won't kill him. Must he be religious?
IslamRe: First Gay Mosque To Open In Paris by wiegraf: 10:02pm On Nov 28, 2012
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/belief/2012/nov/26/paris-gay-friendly-mosque

zaheed: I'm a French Muslim who is gay, and a feminist. I no longer want people in my country to think that it is an impossible blend, and that these different aspects of my identity are incompatible. Today in France, gay teenagers are almost 15 times more likely than those who are straight to kill themselves because of their sexual orientation. Left deeply bruised by this fact, I decided to create an association in support of gay French Muslims, which launched in 2010.

This eventually led me to plan an inclusive mosque in Paris – the first of its kind. It is a project born after a long personal journey. As a teenager, when my representation of Islam was a radical one, I learned half of the Qur'an by heart. I was bewitched by the beauty of the texts, which were steeped in universalism. But at the age of 17, I came to terms with the fact that I was gay. After more than 15 years of reflection on the matter, I now understand that the Qur'an does not explicitly refer to "homosexuality", nor does it refer to women as "inferior". Indeed, the strict and dogmatic interpretation of some verses of the Qur'an is no longer unanimous, especially in the eyes of progressive Muslims across the world (even if we remain, for the time being, a minority).

I also realised that neither homophobia or misogyny respect Islamic ethics, to which I adhere fully. I now want to share my love and search for a peaceful spiritual path with as many people as I can, drawing on new foundations to represent the daily experiences of French Muslims in their spiritual quest. This is why I want to open a place of worship where people will always be welcomed as brothers and sisters, whatever their sexual orientation or ethnicity. My project is supported by men, women, trans people and even fathers who tell us that they do not want to leave a radically exclusive Islam to their young daughters as their legacy.

My plan is not strictly about opening a "gay mosque", or even about celebrating gay marriages. Muslims consider marriage as a social contract between two consenting individuals, to be established in front of at least two witnesses, and celebrated in front of their community – that is, those who see them as a couple. The prayers of the imam only work to call attendees to bless the happiness of the newly wed, and they're certainly not intended to seal a contract between two zawjan – a gender neutral Arabic term meaning "spouse". Unlike the Catholic church, for example, which continues to unilaterally decide who may or may not marry, Muslims do not regard marriage as a sacrament.

This project gives hope back to many believers in my community. Common prayer, practised in an egalitarian setting and without any form of gender-based discrimination, is one of the pillars supporting the proposed reforms of our progressive representation of Islam. North American and Canadian vanguards have already started practising it. In North America, progressives are often assisted by Christian congregations or even private companies, which let them use a portion of their premises for Friday prayer. In Paris, we will for the time being benefit from the support of a beautiful Zen Buddhist temple in eastern Paris, but we are looking for a more viable solution in the long run, a venue more central to accommodate as many worshippers as we can.

I don't believe that the issue of minorities' rights allows citizens to carry specific claims, or make exceptions. It simply allows us to address issues that concern all French Muslims, and beyond that, all of our citizens. Looking at feminism and homosexuality within Islam permits us to look at our relation towards religious authority, to question institutional dogma and by extension, to ponder freedom itself – the freedom to define our identity, without concession, compromise or submission.

In what part of the OP's question did he discriminate against non-christians? Has he said he's looking to employ only christian programmers? Has he announced a contract or scholarship that is open only to christians? And even if he did, as long as such a venture is being sponsored soley by christian organization and for the service of christians, then he is perfectly entitled to. But he has done non of these, so where the heck!! does the issue discrimination arisehuh

@Freiburger blindly misses the point and the rest of y'all follow him like sheep being led to the slaughter. smh at your mental laziness..
Like I said earlier on, if she wasn't being a bigot she would not have included muslims in that list. Or do you get the impression that there are more muslim programmers than xtian? If you do, name 5 alpha programmers that are muslim. She just grouped all the people she is prejudiced against and tried to make...something, I'm not sure what...out of it. Make it sound as if programming is somehow evil maybe? While using a computer which is largely based on the seminal work of a gay atheist(iirc, can't really remember). There's a long list of things that muslims subscribe to that I frankly find inexcusable. I'd rather fry in hell if it existed than be a muslim. The rest of the groups on that list, no, not so much.

Also, I can be bigoted as well.

cheesy

I'll think of something that can be taxed... Too much in my brain atm. But yeah, I don't support what they do, at all, but I'm not so quick to jump on their backs. They aren't overtly forcing any one, in a sense.

I still think outright 419 should be in prison, and they should be taxed if they cannot show they are not for profit. But it's complicated of course. And true, I certainly cannot justify banning all tithes, but maybe I can justify the taxing dubious npo's and arresting outright conmen.
ProgrammingRe: Are There Any Christian Coders/programmers? by wiegraf: 8:11am On Nov 28, 2012
I don't particularly think being any of these is bad (except maybe being a muslim) so I don't really care. A few notes though

There are more muslim programmers than xtian? This would seem to indicate blind bias. You just lumped all the groups you hate together without giving it much thought

Gays, atheists and satanists are anti-xtian? Dohohohohoho

This here is heresy...
Wait...let me consult my bible and a few pastors to confirm that. It is my understanding that god made everything, but he didn't make everything as well. Also, officially, anything we don't understand is supposed to be classified as 'mysterious', but my pious xtian friend here says 'devil' is also a good excuse. Maybe we should open a thread to discuss this? We can also discuss which hand should we use to get rid of boogers. It's a great conundrum that has been bothering me for a while...

Why did he want to test our faith? For mysterious reasons. What else could it be?

@okey

Well, personally, I'm fairly reluctant to criticize pastopreuners more or else because of the reasons you highlight. It's a free world. But you have to consider the numbers involved (now that I've seen them, whoa) and the considerable amount of goodwill they receive. You also have to consider their motivations. Outright lying/419? Go to prison, simple.

If they really do use the cash like non profit charities do (and aid everyone without discriminating) then of course they deserve tax free status. But if not, and when you consider jets they probably don't, well, everyone pays taxes. Why in should they go free? Because of unverified claims? They provide a service, and lots of services are taxed. If they want to appear respectable they can think of it as say taxing psychologist.
(Frankly, to outsiders, they look like despots/gangstars)

Area_boy: I see where you're going with this. And I must say I do agree with you. Morality seem to shaped by the evolutionary process (us in this case). The longer we remain as a species, the better our morals get in dealing with one another. For the greater good maybe?
When you consider we've burnt through fossil fuels that took billions of years to form, well. So if anything happens to us, that may pretty much mean that's it for life in this tinyminiscule part of the galaxy. It's hard to imagine another species industrializing without petrol, coal, etc. But that's another discussion...

Christianity EtcRe: Is Morality Subjective Or Objective by wiegraf(op): 8:11pm On Nov 26, 2012
okeyxyz: There seems to be only one universal morality and from which all other moralities derive. That is the right to life. It is a universal belief of all living beings, whether plant or animal. So when confronted with a threat, this being would automatically exercise this right by either fighting or fleeing. As this being exercises this right, it would also naturally extend such right to it's own "family", because it's survival would also depend on the survival of this family, Therefore they would evolve or device methods to ensure this survival.
That's how it works biologically, yes. Altruism has aided many a species. Most life wants to stay alive and the little that doesn't of course dies likely before spreading its genes (a nice exception being those spiders who's males allow themselves to be eaten by the females after s.ex, so they can provide nutrients to the female).

So is the preservation of one's life the only near universal good? Or is the preservation of all life regarded as the priority?

Note of course that the preservation of all life actually serves the purpose of preserving one's life. For instance, sabre tooth tigers or something similar seem to have evolved 4x. Each time they met their extinction because suitable prey for their hunts dried out (not sure if I digested the article properly though, so I might be mistaken). It was in their best interest that their prey stay alive, so cooperation of some sort would have actually aided them. Tricky
Christianity EtcRe: Could A Pastor Buy A Jet With Just Tithes by wiegraf(op): 7:20pm On Nov 26, 2012
musKeeto: Tax free as far as I know.
In RCCG, 100% of tithes is sent to the national headquarters from all parishes. The other income is broken down into percentages and left for parishes based on their administrative roles: Zonal HQ, Regional HQ etc.
Can't say if it's the same for other churches though..
Winners, RCCG and in PCH Salvation Ministries( which is kind of an offshoot from Winners) are some of the biggest I know of. They'd probably account for 75% of Pentecostal Christians in Nigeria.

75% being my opinion.

Things get worse when you consider that there are close to 4 RCCG parishes on some popular streets in Port-Harcourt.
This is like a serious huh
At least tell me there's a way government determines they really are non-profit and put that money to charitable use. Like say via accounting

I'm guessing, no?
Christianity EtcRe: Could A Pastor Buy A Jet With Just Tithes by wiegraf(op): 7:03pm On Nov 26, 2012
musKeeto: I've worked for one of the popular churches. I had access to most of the financial sheets within our church.

We'll ignore offerings(building, special, seedfaith, all other bullshit), and donations.

TITHES: this is the real windfall
Every month, each member is expected to pay 10% of his salary. For our case study, let's assume one church has a 100 members. Let's also assume each of them earns minimum wage.

18,000 * 10% = 1,800

1,800 * 100 = 180,000naira every month.

Imagine a church has at most 10 branches in a state.

180,000 * 10 =1.8million naira per month..

There are 36 states in Nigeria, Abuja is excluded..

1.8m * 36= 64.8m naira every month..

Need I say more..

REMEMBER OFFERINGS, DONATIONS, SPECIAL SERVICE OFFERINGS, ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THESE FIGURES.
Lol

Can't really argue with that.. Not that I genuinely want to actually

Educate my ignorance abeg
All this is tax free?
How is the money spent, are there comittees? What's accountability like?
How many churches are as big as the one in your xase study?

uj_sizzle: aren't we speaking about good/evil, right/wrong??
I'm referring to the kinda laws that dictate killing is bad, stealing is wrong etc. We weren't fashioned to form opinions on our own from birth, but have been gradually taught based on the standpoint of the law.
We are of course, but if you agree they are dictated by society, and can be dramatically different from one culture to the next, why do you call them objective? They won't be subjective to an individual, true, but they will be to the society that created them.
Christianity EtcRe: Is Morality Subjective Or Objective by wiegraf(op): 5:30pm On Nov 26, 2012
uj_sizzle: the law was placed to give us a sense of good and evil, there's nothing subjective about that.
I'm not following you, in what sense do you mean? Aren't laws dependent largely by society's whims? Or are you talking about something else?
Christianity EtcRe: Is Morality Subjective Or Objective by wiegraf(op):
I wonder if we can settle on this: would every conscious species assert that there is the concept of good and evil? This goes beyond recripocity and kinship, as in, being good just to attain immediate gain.
If they were looking beyond kinships, would they all subscribe to some higher purpose? Theists may tell you this purpose is whatever god they subscribe to. Others could say simply the preservation of life.

Edit: put in another way, would every conscious being with emotion agree there's a moral good/bad? Can we say that is objective? So long as there's an emotional consciousness present, then there's moral good and bad? If so, is the problem determining what is good and what is bad? Is that the subjective bit?
