Travel / Airasia Missing Jet's Bodies, Debris Found Off The Coast Of Borneo Island by withinnigeria: 10:25am On Dec 30, 2014

Indonesian rescuers saw bodies and luggage off the coast of Borneo island on Tuesday and officials said they were "95 percent sure" debris spotted in the sea was from a missing AirAsia plane with 162 people on board.

Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control early on Sunday during bad weather on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

Pictures of floating bodies were broadcast on television and relatives of the missing gathered at the crisis center in Surabaya were shown weeping, their heads in their hands.

Media quoted an air force official earlier as saying one suspected body, luggage and a life vest were among the debris in the Java Sea.

"As we approached, the body seemed bloated," said First Lieutenant Tri Wibowo, who was on board a Hercules aircraft, was quoted by the Kompas.com website as saying.

Search and Rescue Agency chief Soelistyo told reporters he was "95 percent sure" the debris was from the missing plane.

Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director general of air transportation at the transportation ministry, told reporters some of the debris spotted was red and white, AirAsia's colors.

"It's probably from the aircraft," he said.

About 30 ships and 21 aircraft from Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and the United States were searching up to 10,000 square nautical miles on Tuesday.

The plane, which did not issue a distress signal, disappeared after its pilot failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather because of heavy air traffic, officials said.

Pilots and aviation experts said thunderstorms, and requests to gain altitude to avoid them, were not unusual in that area.

The Indonesian pilot was experienced and the plane last underwent maintenance in mid-November, the airline said.

Online discussion among pilots has centered on unconfirmed secondary radar data from Malaysia that suggested the aircraft was climbing at a speed of 353 knots, about 100 knots too slow, and that it might have stalled.

DISASTERS

The plane, whose engines were made by CFM International, co-owned by General Electric and Safran of France, lacked real-time engine diagnostics or monitoring, a GE spokesman said.

Such systems are mainly used on long-haul flights and can provide clues to airlines and investigators when things go wrong.

Three airline disasters involving Malaysian-affiliated carriers in less than a year have dented confidence in the country's aviation industry and spooked travelers across the region.

Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 went missing on March 8 on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew on board and has not been found. On July 17, the same airline's Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

On board Flight QZ8501 were 155 Indonesians, three South Koreans, and one person each from Singapore, Malaysia and Britain. The co-pilot was French.

U.S. law enforcement and security officials said passenger and crew lists were being examined but nothing significant had turned up and the incident was regarded as an unexplained accident.

Indonesia AirAsia is 49 percent owned by Malaysia-based budget carrier AirAsia.

The AirAsia group, including affiliates in Thailand, the Philippines and India, had not suffered a crash since its Malaysian budget operations began in 2002.

India is waiting to know what went wrong with the missing plane and will investigate if AirAsia India is following all safety procedures, a senior Indian aviation ministry official told Reuters. AirAsia India, a joint venture of the Malaysian carrier, started flying this year and is expanding operations.

The plane's disappearance comes at a sensitive time for Indonesia's aviation authorities, as they strive to improve the country's safety reputation to match its status as one of the airline industry's fastest growing markets.

Business / Banks Mobilise Funds To Support Boko Haram Victims by withinnigeria: 9:55am On Dec 30, 2014
Nigerian banks are mobilising funds to provide education, upkeep and other supports for the large number of widows and orphans created by the Boko Haram sect in the North East.

Disclosing this at a three-day workshop organised for Finance Correspondents Association and Business Editors by Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) in Katsina, Deputy Director, Banking and Payments System Department of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Musa Itopa Jimoh, said that already Ecobank was giving N5000 to each of the victims of the insurgency and at the end of the year, the bank will still donate a huge sum of money to alleviate the sufferings of the victims.

Jimoh also used the occasion to address the issues arising from the removal of N100 charge on Automated Teller Machines (ATM) transaction, saying the N100 was not removed but was rather transferred to the bank.

But the behaviours of the customers, he said, changed immediately after the withdrawal as over 50 per cent bank customers no longer go to the banks and in six months the banks incurred N6 million cost on ATM services. So, in September this year, CBN thought it necessary to return the charges on the customers to ease the pressure on the banks and to ensure that the payment devices work effectively.

He noted that the N100, which it said to have been removed was not removed but transferred on banks. But the behaviours of bank customers changed to the extent that over 50 per cent of customers no longer go there.

“After a year review of the effect of the removal of the ATM cash withdrawal charge, it was discovered that customers’ withdrawal behaviours changed. Customers who used to make cash withdrawal from the banks’ ATMs have now changed to withdrawal from the nearest ATMs (even if not that of their banks). This created heavy financial burden on issuing institutions since they have to pay N65 for every transaction their customers do at other banks’ ATMs.

The resultant effect was that ATM services became very poor and sometimes unavailable due to outright decline of transaction authorisation from the issuing banks.

“This has tremendous impact on interoperability because transactions done by customers through other banks’ ATMs were being rejected,” he said.

Politics / Festive Of Abuse 4 OBJ, He’s A Serial Liar, now Adebanjo Says He Has No Concience by withinnigeria: 8:33am On Dec 30, 2014

He’s a serial liar, says Osoba

Afenifere chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo, has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a man without conscience, saying that the South-West did not benefit from his eight-year administration of the country.

Adebanjo spoke at the public presentation of a new book, Watch the Watcher: A book of Remembrance of the Obasanjo Years written by political activist, Yinka Odumakin, in Lagos on Monday.

Adebanjo said: “For eight years, I challenge anybody to come and show what we (Yoruba) got when Obasanjo was at the helm of affairs. For Obasanjo, Nigeria never existed before he came to power. He has only one adviser, Matthew Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo.”

“Obasanjo believed he is not corrupt. But before he left office, he changed the constitution of the party so that he can become the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT). Obasanjo has no conscience,” he said.

Also speaking on the occasion, the former Governor of Ogun State and chairman of the book launch, Olusegun Osoba, described Obasanjo, as a serial liar who wanted to cover up his past deeds with more deceits through his recent publication, My Watch.

Osoba said Obasanjo solicited for the support of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) for his third term agenda which was eventually foiled by Nigerians.

“Obasanjo is a liar. He has not only been tamed, he has been caged in the entire country where he cannot escape,” he said.

Osoba faulted claims made by Obasanjo of not nurturing a Third Term agenda while in office, adding that he (Obasanjo) actually made some moves to perpetuate himself in office.

He accused Obasanjo of allegedly rigging out Alliance for Democracy governors in the 2003 governorship elections despite the governors advise to the people of South West to vote for him as president.

He said contrary to Obasanjo’s claim in his book, the former president approached leadership of the AD to solicit for their support in 2003.

“The Watcher (Obasanjo) wrote a book which Wole Soyinka has given his verdict. I am also going to give my verdict when I write my book.

“That he (Obasanjo) does not know about the pact with the AD governors is far from the fact. To correct him, it was July 2002, he (Obasanjo) came to the graduation at Unilag, we met at the office of the old Head of State. It was there that he almost went on his knees that we, the AD governors, should support his second term ambition”.

While commending Odumakin for coming up with the book, he said: “It is an event to put the records straight. Many aspects of the book written by President Olusegun Obasanjo need correction. He was at the centre of all the negotiations to broker a political agreement between Alliance for Democracy and the Peoples Democratic Party in 2003.

“For him to say he knew nothing about it, I totally disagree with him because the final meeting with him was attended by highly placed Nigerians, a highly placed royal father, the Awujale, Pa Adesanya, Bishop Gbonigi, Bishop Ladigbolu, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, all the governors and a host of others.

“For him (Obasanjo) to say that he knew nothing about the arrangement between AD for which he aborted and rigged the election is totally incorrect. The book he wrote, is too voluminous, I don’t want to comment on other aspects because it is a very heavy book to read,” Osoba stated.

Minister of Police Affairs, Jelil Adesiyan, also speaking on the same occasion on Monday warned that the Federal Government would henceforth arrest and prosecute anyone, no matter highly placed, who makes any inciting statements that is capable of heating up the polity and plunging Nigeria into chaos.

Adesiyan, who condemned what he called the attempt by some people to capture power at all cost also berated Obasanjo, whom he accused of working against the emergence of foremost Yoruba leader, Obafemi Awolowo, as President.

Adesiyan said henceforth, “There will no longer be any sacred cow; if anyone threatens to destroy the relative peace Nigeria enjoys.

“Those disturbing the polity today are former PDP members, former ministers, governors and others who are no longer useful to PDP. I have been talking to the Inspector- General of Police and the Director of State Security Services that if anybody says anything mutinous or capable of causing crisis in the country, such a person should be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law.”

While taking a swipe at Obasanjo’s alliance with the APC, he urged the Yoruba to be good student of history and pay back the APC for what its presidential candidate did to Awolowo in the aftermath of the coup plot that brought Buhari to power.

Also speaking on Obasanjo’s recent criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan especially in his latest book, “ My Watch”, he said the only sin President Jonathan committed against Obasanjo was because he (Jonathan) has chosen to be independent-minded and refuse to take negative advice from the former president.

“Anybody that has staged one coup or the other in this country is not a progressive. One of them who is now claiming to be a progressive upon becoming a Head of State, the first thing he did was to seize Awolowo’s passport, he did not even allow him go for medical check up”.

“Awolowo’s life was cut short because of the death of some of his loyal followers in jail by this fellow. Awolowo is the Mujahideen of the Yoruba, our leader.

“Anyone who thinks he can rubbish him and get something from Yorubaland should have a rethink. The Yoruba are not fools,” he said.

The book reviewer, Professor G.G. Dara said “it is expected that the book will trigger more debates. The author was motivated to write the book to challenge exaggerated claims of heroic grandeur and accomplishments made by the former President.”

The author, Odumakin, said “the essence of the book is to nudge us as a people not to call a thief a chief. And for all those who handle power to know that they will not be allowed to rewrite history.”

Other dignataries that attended the book launch included Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko represented by Shola Ebiseeni; FERMA chairman, Jide Adeniji; Labour Party scribe, Kayode Ajulo, and Tony Nyiam (rtd).

Others were Monday Ubani, Bello Fadile, Akin Osuntokun and Lagos PDP chairman and Tunji Shelle.

Barely one year after Nigerians stopped him from turning the National Theatre into a hotel, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Edem Duke, secretly jetted off the country to the United Arab Emirates, UAE, where he traded off the nation’s cultural pride to Mulk Holding, a diversified UAE-based conglomerate with interests in retail sector and other businesses.

The secret deal which was successfully shielded from the Nigerian media, in spite of a subsisting concessioning arrangement with the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, was signed and sealed in December , 2014 between a delegation led by Duke, the General Manager of the National Theatre, Kabiru Yar’Adua and representatives of Mulk Holding, said to be ploughing the sum of $40 million (about N7.5 billion) counterpart fund into the project.

According to GulfAfrica Review, in its December 10, 2014 edition, Sharjah’s Mulk Holdings, a diversified UAE-based business conglomerate, “has announced its entry into the retail sector in West Africa through a $40m joint venture to develop Nigeria’s National Arts Theatre in Lagos into a duty-free shopping centre in partnership with the Suzanne Group.

“The interior of the National Theatre will be redesigned and renovated into a modern duty-free and retail shopping mall. The project will convert approximately 30,000m2 of the existing space in two 15,000m2 phases,” said Kabir Yaradua, CEO of the National theatre.

The report continues: “The National Theatre has been the hub of cultural activities in Nigeria since 1976, and this will kick-start a master re-development programme for this area.”

The report quoted Ambassador of Nigeria to the UAE, His Excellency Bashir Yuguda, as saying: “The National Theatre has been the hub of cultural activities in Nigeria since its establishment in 1976, and this development will compliment and kick-start a master re-development programme designed for this area.”

The National Arts Theatre was originally built for the Festival of Arts and Culture in 1977, and later underwent a controversial privatisation after 2001 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Fresh plans further anticipate leasing the land around the theatre in a 30-year concession.

Minister of Tourism, HE Edem Duke, noted: “As part of the continuous drive to promote culture and tourism, the federal government is making necessary arrangements to transform the land into a modern mixed-use commercial and business hub of global standards.”

Arif Hafiz, Managing Director of Suzanne Group, praised the “milestone contract” Mulk Holdings as “one of the major global business groups in the UAE”, while Shaji Ul Mulk, chairman, Mulk Holdings, elaborating on the details of the project, noted that is expected to be completed in 2016.

“Mulk Holdings is adopting aggressive strategies to expand its core business, involving serious investment into existing businesses and diversification into sustainable industries,” Ul Mulk added.

According to a report by audit firm Ernst&Young, Africa’s retail and consumer sector received about 17% of all foreign direct investment that came into the continent in 2013.

Mulk Holdings and its joint venture partners own and manage a group of 20 companies with a sector focus on construction and fit-out manufacturing, as well as diversified business interests in trading, commodities, real estate and energy, spread across 48 countries.

Based in Dubai, the Suzanne Group caters to duty free shopping outlets in international airports and seaports, and is a registered supplier of services to the offices of the United Nations.

Though the theatre had been a victim of public sector incompetence, its final descent into the ignoble hall of shame of failed public institutions started in 2001 when the Obasanjo civilian government served notice of its intent to privatize the monument. Converting a public institution into a successful private enterprise has never captured the fancy of Nigerians. Many of such previous attempts at privatization of public institutions have failed and the case of the National Theatre was not different. Between 2001 and now, the theatre has remained a mere ball for government ping-ponging. It is yet to be sold or concessioned, worst still the federal government which is the original owner of the facility is behaving as though it is the least of its worries: unserious.

A staff of the theatre told our correspondent that the employees are more confused than anybody. ”We don’t know our fate. Today we hear they want to privatize it and build a 5-star hotel here, tomorrow we hear a different story. This is confusing and it is affecting our morale and commitment because nobody, not even our senior staff can say categorically that this is the true situation of things.

“We believe the management of the theatre is doing this deliberately to give the impression that the theatre cannot function effectively if left in the hand of government. We believe it is a cheap way to arm-twist government to sell the national pride. But some of us have travelled far and wide and we have seen equivalent institutions in other countries being managed by the public sector and they are efficient”.

Political Economist investigation showed that the theatre has become a victim of power play orchestrated by the Tourism Minister, Edem Duke, in concert with the General Manager of the Theatre, Mallam Kabiru Yar’Adua both of whom, stakeholders allege, are intent on disposing of the national monument for peanuts. The Theatre, they argue, was set up by a decree just like the National Troupe and other parastatals of the Ministry of Tourism and they see no reason why it should be sold off on the whims of a minister and a manager. They cited the case of the United States where certain monuments are still held in custody of government.

For instance, the United States government enacted a law in 1846 to support and preserve the Smithsonian Institution and its 19 museums across the country. In UK, the Royal National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company are publicly funded theatre outlets and they are still relevant till this day. The case of the National Theatre cannot be an exception, they warned.

The National Theatre has been a victim of government policy flip-flop. The BPE commenced the concession transaction of the National Theatre in 2001 following the conclusion of World Bank-financed diagnostic study and Transaction Advisory service in line with international best practices. The first concession transaction in 2001 led to the pre-qualification of the following prospective concessionaires:

Jadeas Trust Consortium, and
Lloyd Anderson Investment Limited.

In January 2003, the pre-qualified concessionaires conducted data room and physical due diligence. The transaction was stalled, however, owing to the inability of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to provide relevant documents such as Power of Attorney as well as building and floor plans of the National Theatre.

The BPE did another concession transaction of National Theatre in 2006. Eight Consortia responded when the Bureau advertised for Expressions of Interest. This led to the financial bid opening on May 17, 2007 where Infrastructica Consortium emerged as the Preferred Bidder with a bid price of ₦35, 560, 000,000 and Jadeas Trust Limited as the Reserved Bidder with an offer of ₦28, 902,948,593.23.

Following the approval of the results of the financial bid by the NCP, an offer letter was sent to the Preferred Bidder on May 18, 2007 and a timetable to complete the concession agreement by May 28, 2007 was drawn. Unfortunately, the Preferred Bidder, Infrastructica Consortium, failed to meet the terms of the offer, leading to the termination of the offer. The Reserved Bidder, Jadeas Trust, was thereafter invited for negotiation to pay for the enterprise.

However, the process to conclude the transaction with Jadeas Trust was stalled.

The NCP at its first meeting on January 22, 2013 approved the resumption of the concession transaction by the BPE with a view to bringing it to conclusion. The BPE has consequently invited the reserve bidder, Jadeas Trust Consortium with the offer of N28,902,948,593.23 to present a revised technical and financial proposal. The N28.9 billion bid offer, which is not yet concluded as it will form part of the renegotiation with Jedeas Trust, comprises both Entry fee and yearly lease fees to be paid over a 35-year period. This is different from the investment capital to be based on approved Post Concession Business Development Plan from which the Concessionaire is to recoup its investment and return the enterprise to the Government after 35 years in the event that the concession is not renewed.

The NCP, in line with its practice to carry along ministries whose enterprises are being privatized/concession, also approved that the BPE should invite the Honourable Minister of Tourism & Culture to participate in the NCP’s technical sub-committee that will evaluate the proposal of Jadeas Trust.

Jadeas Trust Consortium has submitted a revised Technical and Financial proposal to BPE. In accordance with NCP’s decision, the BPE has written the Ministry and the Management of National Theatre to send two nominees each to join the evaluation committee that will assess Jadeas Trust Consortium’s Technical and Financial proposal.

The BPE is awaiting the response of both the Ministry and Management of National Theatre for the evaluation of the Technical and Financial proposal to begin in earnest. The result of the evaluation team will be presented to, first the Technical Committee of NCP for consideration before the Technical Committee presents its recommendations to the NCP for approval or further directive.

At the Federal Executive Council’s meeting (FEC) held on Wednesday June 26, 2013 an Inter-ministerial Cabinet Committee was set up to consider the parallel concession transactions being carried out by the BPE and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation.

With the new development being spearheaded secretly by the minister, it is not clear what has become of the earlier concessioning arrangement and the status of Jadeas Trust.

Jobs/Vacancies / Employment Tips: How To Get A Job Without Looking Too Desperate by withinnigeria: 7:19am On Dec 28, 2014

There are no jobs. That’s how it seems to those who have been trying unsuccessfully for some time to find a job in this challenged economy in Ghana.

But there are jobs; it’s just that they are too few and far between, causing those unfortunate enough to be without a job right now to have to go to great lengths to find one. Some are even going as far as stalking or seducing prospective employers in an attempt to land a job.

Many job seekers, though, continue to use traditional means of searching for work. Unfortunately, most of these methods no longer yield good results. However, if you do resort to nontraditional means, you must be careful, as some of these methods have the potential to backfire on you.

My former editor once told me about how a jobseeker basically stalked him. For her, it was showing persistence, but persistence taken to the extreme of daily, eerie text messages, repeated unannounced visits to the office, and even sending a prominent official to speak on her behalf was a bit too much for his comfort zone. Rather than sway him to give her an opportunity, she scared him.

How then do you draw the attention of a prospective employer to yourself without seeming too desperate?

It is good to apply for jobs and send resumés to companies that have announced vacancies. However, you are not the only one looking for a job. There are hundreds of jobseekers out there who, just like you, want and are applying for the same position. Therefore you need to be creative. Come up with ideas that reveal your ingenuity and help you stand out from the multitude. More important, you have to roll out your ideas in a manner that gets the potential employer to notice you for the right reasons.

These four creative pointers will help you secure a job without damaging your reputation.

•Personal connections: This is my favourite tip. It is always good to have a personal connection with the company you are applying to. Personal experiences have taught me that knowing someone inside a company doubles, if not triples, your chances of getting a job. If you have lost contact with your old school mates and former co-workers, this is the time to reconnect. For all you know, they know of a vacancy in their company or may recommend you to another company. When they do, you stand a better chance than the other applicants eyeing that same position.

•Promote yourself: There are various promotional tactics you can effectively employ to gain people’s attention. Now more than ever, social media makes it easy for anybody to become popular. Invest your time in connecting with and following people in your industry. Create an ad about yourself on the various platforms. In the ad, describe your skills, qualifications, the kind of job you want and the companies you want to work for. Share, like, tweet, retweet and participate in discussions, especially those initiated by professionals in your field of choice. When you prove to have a voice and showcase your intelligence, you are likely to get the attention you need and possibly a recommendation or even a job offer.

•Show what you’ve got: When you get the chance to sit face-to-face with a recruitment manager, you have just a few minutes to either impress or put him or her off. The smartest thing you can do is to gather as much information as possible about who will be interviewing you and use that to your advantage. Upon entering the office of the CEO of a company he wanted to work for, one jobseeker realized the walls were covered in post-it notes. After the CEO explained those notes contained his ideas and that posting them on the wall helped him to stay organized, the jobseeker drew inspiration and did something that would make him stand out when he returned later for an interview -- he bought a white poster-board and yellow-coloured post-it notes and wrote on them 50 of his qualities that would make him well-qualified for the position; the CEO hired him. From their social media sites, you can discern what impresses interviewers and hiring managers, then use that to create something unique about yourself. And when you get to sit in front of them in an interview, show them what you’ve got by giving a compelling reason why you are the ideal candidate for the position.

•Style your resumé: Hiring managers receive a lot of resumés. Thus, they may not be able to go through all the resumés they receive. Many resumés are just plain boring to look at. However, employers will take notice of yours if it stands out. Some jobseekers take the time to designing their resumés elegantly. One jobseeker got hired after sending his resumé with a chocolate. If you want to work with a soft drink company, why not try sending your resumé rolled up in an empty soft drink bottle? With this single act of ingenuity, you are sure to get yourself noticed and are more likely to beat out the others contesting with you for the same job.

What you want is your dream job and not just something that will pay the bills. That is why you have to put in your all and employ your most creative ideas to attract the attention of key personnel in your dream companies.

Sell yourself in a manner that brings out your ingenuity. However you make use of the tips above, just be sure to do so in a way that highlights your good qualities and what you bring to the job. And be confident, not desperate or downright scary!

Good luck!
