Freelancing has been a saving grace for me, even though it's nothing I would like to depend on, during my stay in Malta I had no full-time job, and I had to depend on Upwork, now imagine paying 450 euro every month for rent without a year and never missing any.

I had to learn alot, you see when it comes to freelancing, you have to turn on, the researching and marketing aspect of your brain. For the researching part, you have to think what do the customers want ? and How do you position yourself to them ?

You know they quality, so you improve your portfolio, How do you position yourself to them ? by being in proximity, so what that meant was me joining Reddit, LinkedIn, some slack channels and forums, and also contributing.

Currently I sit at Upwork as a Top rated in my field, but what I do is research what field is lucrative, some people have this mindset of " I am a writer so I will only do writing gigs", when it should be I can write, what other skills can I upskill in.

However I will not deny that the Nigerian situation makes it much harder, but I believe that by putting yourself out there and upskilling things will eventually work out.

So my experience with freelancing has been good enough to survive. At least I know that in a month I can minimum of $800 even though it's not idea but it's manageable.

Upskilling and marketing i believe is an important skill to succeed as a freelancer, once those are covered then networking comes in.

I landed In London-gatwick airport on thursday morning at 6:26am.

The Officer in charge wan whine me buh I no panic.

He ask me series of questions with a straight face.

This is how the conversation goes

Me: Hello good morning,

Officer: Hi, how are you doing?

Me: I’m fine thank you.

Officer: Your passport please, which country did you come from ?

Officer: Why have you come to the uk?

Me: I’m here for my master degree

Officer: which course will you be studying?

Me: Msc business analytics and big data

Officer: Do you have your CAS letter with you?

Me: Yea sir

Officer: Let me see it

Me: I brought out my phone and showed him.

Officer: which course did you say you are going to study again?

Me: Told him business analytics and big data.

Officer: do you mean to say Business Analysis ?

Me: No, it’s business analytics sir (the whole time he was looking at the CAS) I’m sure he just said the business analysis just to see if I know what I’m saying.

Officer: How much have you paid from your fees ?

Me: I have paid £2000 and I also have £7500 schorlaship from them.

Officer: wow, £7500, how did you get this much schorlaship?

Me: I think I submitted a very strong application, the school was also impressed by my undergraduate degree transcript, and my SOP.

Officer: How are you going to pay your tuition balance?

Me: I have personal savings and support from my family, I have the money ready.

Officer: You said personal money, how did you get that much money.

Me: I have been working as a freelance writer for the past 7years, I get most of my client from fiverr and Upwork.

Officer: nodded is head and said impressive.

Where will you be staying? Did you pay for school hostel or you will be staying at Airbnb?

Me: I will be staying with a family friend in Leeds till on Sunday (when I said this, his facial expression changed abit, before moving to Liverpool.

Officer: Do you have the address of the place you are going in Leeds ?

Me: Yes sir

Officer: Let me see it (so he gave me my phone back)

I then go to whatsapp to show him the address.

Officer: how will you get to Leeds from here ?

Me: I already booked a train for this morning sir.

So he looked at the passport again and gave me a big smile 😃 and said Welcome to the United Kingdom.

Note: The man interviews one black guy before me, he drilled him alot and collected his passport, I don’t what happen buh the guy left to see another officer which I Beleive to be there supervisor, he came back and stand behind me sha.

I'm actually not an expert on these Upwork stuffs though. I will just say I got lucky. Because for sure I know how difficult it can be to navigate that platform properly when there are thousands of people offering the same services as you do, and a thousand others even above your experience level.
Just that when you come across the right opportunity, you'll know it's for you.

Maybe something that gave me an advantage was the fact that I always started my cover letters with action phrases (Hey! Watch some similar videos I have worked on below, etc.), and then I indicate interest in making a free 30-seconds sample work for them to confirm my expertise (if it is a video) before I then proceed to introduce myself and do the normal cover letter stuffs.
It is applicable to any niche...But again, I can't tell for sure if this was what did the magic. Just my own theory.

It's been a while I went to the Cinemas for movies..

Last time I was there, ticket sold for ₦1500 per person, so I decided to go today with 4 of my family members only to hear that a ticket is ₦8,500, meaning I'm to spend ₦42,500 just to watch a 1hr49 mins movie.

Well I told my family members to forget it that I'll stream the movie for them at home or even download so we can rewatch multiple times which won't cost me up to ₦5k data.

I also tried Playzone, last time I was there, I spent ₦15k on my daughter, now ₦30k can only get us half of what I got her previously, I also spoke to my legs.
