Bishop David Oyedepo, Chancellor, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara, on Friday called for urgent steps to check students’ unfettered access to social media. “We must wake up from our slumber to deal with this monster. It unconsciously robs people of their future by robbing them of their time,’’ Oyedepo, said at the 7th Convocation of the institution. He was speaking on: “Combating the challenge of education without integration.’’ “This social media saga has eroded the substance of destiny of most youths today. What is supposed to be a plus has suddenly become a major minus. “This is because everything of value delivers through investment of time. “Suddenly, we are faced with a generation on the wrong side of history; the honour of this generation has been wiped off,’’ the Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, said. Oyedepo stressed that social media content that did not add value should be restricted. “They chat all day with no time left to think, plan, programme and engage productively in the pursuit of any task. “Many youths spend less than 10 to 20 per cent of their time on their tasks per day. They can never match a generation that spends 70 per cent to 80 per cent of their time on their tasks. “We must device means to put a check on free access to social media particularly those that are not adding values.’’ he insisted. Oyedepo advised parents of the graduating students to give them free hand to develop themselves to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. “Give your sons, daughters, or wards the opportunity to develop their wings, and I know that many will soar much higher than their parents,’’ he said. In a keynote address, Mr Alphonsus Inyang, Group Managing Director of a private company expressed the need for the country to pursue and promote agriculture that is knowledge driven and fully mechanised. “The reason why we are not making any headway in agriculture in Nigeria unlike in the Netherlands is that agricultural practices and processes there are highly mechanised, technology and knowledge driven. “Out-dated methods of agriculture such as the use of hoes and cutlasses reduce efficiency and these methods are not only costly, they are time consuming,’’ he said. He argued also that agricultural practices of old contributed to health problems later in life. The university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Adeniyi Olayanju, said at the occasion the institution “migrated’’ quite a number of its academic activities into online platforms to adapt to the new normal occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic. “In spite of this pandemic situation that foisted lockdown on the world, our faith and stake in driving continuous engagement with students and improvement in our services never changed. “This was made possible by the huge investment of the proprietors into Information Technology infrastructures and for this we are immeasurably grateful,’’ he said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 46 of the graduating students bagged First class honours. The Federal Government has asked the House of Representatives to amend the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) act to empower the agency to regulate social and online media. . . The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, made the request in Abuja, on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, during a public hearing on a bill to amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act, organsed by the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values. . . Section two (b) of the NBC act states, “(1) The Commission shall have [the] responsibility of: Receiving, processing and considering applications for the establishment, ownership or operation of radio and television stations including (i) cable television services, direct satellite broadcast and any other medium of broadcasting.” . . Mohammed, however, wants the commission to also be able to regulate the online media in addition to other channels of broadcasting. . . According to him, “I want to add here specifically that internet broadcasting and all online media should be included in this because we have a responsibility to monitor contents, including Twitter.” . . However, the International Press Council (IPC), the Institute for Media and Society as well as the Radio Television and Theatre Arts Workers’ Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) kicked against inclusion of internet broadcast and online media IN the category of broadcast service licenses, saying it would be injurious to the civic space, freedom of expression and media freedom. God have mercy on Ibadan |
Members of NURTW clashed in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan and left two people dead. Angry youths on Wednesday stormed the office of the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde to protest the gruesome murder of two of their friends by members of the National Road Transport Workers (NURTW), otherwise known as Motor Park System (PMS). Storming the secretariat with the corpses of the victims and those injured in the clash, our correspondent gathered that the governor's aides quickly arranged for him to escape. SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that members of NURTW clashed in the Iwo Road area of Ibadan and left two people dead. SaharaReporters reliably gathered that the governor was still in his office around 5:48 pm when the angry youths arrived at the secretariat but he hurriedly exited through the fire service gate to avoid talking to the youths. A source in the governor's office said; "We were still at the governor's office at the time those protesters stormed the secretariat yesterday evening. The governor left the secretariat through the fire service gate. I guess he didn't know how to pacify those people because they were angry. I know they brought the corpses to the governor's office because his PMS boys are involved in the crisis. Auxiliary and his thugs cannot change. "NURTW was silenced by Isiaka Ajimobi's administration during his eight years in office. Did you hear they were on a rampage for eight years? No. I don't know why Makinde is empowering this thug called Auxiliary. Did you see the video in which Auxiliary was threatening to kill the former governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose? Is that a good man? Makinde could have followed some policies of Ajimobi, especially in the area of security to maintain peace in the state," he said. Our correspondent reports that the Chairman of Park Manager System (PMS), Mukaila Lamidi, popularly called Auxiliary has been identified as being behind many clashes in the state. Playstore wahala |
Politician and one-time presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba has revealed reason for the removal of his Crowwe App on Playstore by Google. Vanguard recalls Google on Monday, June 14, deleted Crowwe App days after federal government suspended Twitter. Vanguard learnt some aggreived Nigerians had taken to Playstore to discredit the app following the suspension of Twitter. Reacting, Garba in a chat with The PUNCH Monday, claimed he asked Google to take down his social media platform from Google Playstore because he needed to update the code. “We took down Crowwe App because we are trying to update the codes and then put it back up. There are some bugs which we identified which can prevent future downloads so we decided to bring it down, edit the code and then put it back up,” he said. On whether the app was removed due to the complaints by Nigerians, Garba replied; “Yes, a lot of people have been posting reports but it has no effect on the app. The truth is that before you publish an app, you have to pass through a lot of audits and a lot of these people commenting don’t know. The app being installed has nothing to do with the user but has everything to do with the app itself. There is a bug affecting the contact list information so we had to submit a support report to take it down which was done. We are almost done with the publishing and we will push it back and it might be installed tonight or tomorrow morning.” Source - https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/06/why-google-deleted-my-crowwe-app-adamu-garba/

Elon musk and crypto ehn |
The Crypto market was all fired up, from Sunday night to the early hours of Monday amid Elon Musk revealing Tesla will soon resume allowing Bitcoin transactions, howbeit with a condition tied to it. The 48-year-old tech billionaire and leader of the world’s most valuable car marker spoke via Twitter saying “When there’s confirmation of reasonable (~50%) clean energy usage by miners with the positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing Bitcoin transactions.” Such macros boosted the market confidence of many leading altcoins which include Ethereum, Theta Fuel, Aave, and Chainlink, all posting significant gains with Bitcoin trading within the striking distance of $40,000. At the time of writing, the market valuation of the global crypto market stood at $1.64 trillion, posting gains of nearly 10% for the day. The total crypto market trading volume stood at about $93 billion, postulating gains of nearly 16% for the day. The total volume in DeFi is currently at $6.52 billion, or 7% of the total crypto market 24-hour volume. Bitcoin’s price traded near the 40,000 mark with its dominance level currently at around 45%. The tech billionaire also claimed that the car company only sold 10% of its Bitcoin, further boosting market confidence across the market spectrum Also, global investors are weighing positively on the flagship crypto becoming a legal tender in some frontier markets on the back of a central American country announcing its adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender, and Tanzania’s leader Samia Suluhu Hassan telling its finance chiefs to prepare a framework for crypto assets. Though market pundits argue the bullish rally was already underway as the crypto market speculates about an imminent purchase of the pioneer crypto asset from MicroStrategy and the world’s most powerful neutral opinion about crypto assets, and increased positivity around digital innovation.
