Career / Resume Mistakes To Avoid by Worldtrends: 10:11am On Sep 28, 2018
You’ve been applying to jobs like crazy, but it seems as though all of your applications have disappeared into the black hole of the Internet. Wondering why your resume isn’t getting you any interviews?

We’re willing to bet it’s not because you’re unqualified or just not good enough (which, for the record, you are good enough). It’s likely because your resume has one or more “fatal errors.”

Job seekers, beware! All it takes is just one to strike your job search dead in its tracks. Definitely something entry-level workers need to be on the lookout for when writing your first resume.

Think your resume is bulletproof? Even the most experienced professionals still find themselves guilty of making a mistake or two.

With only a mere six seconds to “wow” a recruiter, having any kind of mistake on your resume is not a risk even the most daring of job seekers should take. After all, your resume is the first point of contact you make with a potential employer, so you want that first impression to be a strong, clear demonstration of just how awesome you are at what you do. That’s how you get an interview—and then once you rock that, a job.

As you write your resume—or give your resume its six-month update—make sure it doesn’t include any of these common resume mistakes listed below.

1. Typos and grammatical errors
Yes, we know, it’s probably the most obvious of all resume tips: It needs to be grammatically perfect. If your resume isn't, employers will read between the lines and draw not-so-flattering conclusions about you, like, "This person can't write," or, "This person obviously doesn't care."

2. Lack of specifics
Your resume shouldn’t simply state the obvious to a hiring manager. Employers need to understand what you've done and accomplished. For example:

A. Worked with employees in a restaurant setting
B. Recruited, hired, trained and supervised more than 20 employees in a restaurant with $2 million in annual sales

Both of these phrases could describe the same person, but the details and specifics in example B will more likely grab an employer's attention.

3. Attempting the "one–size–fits–all" approach
Whenever you try to develop a generic resume to send to all job ads, you almost always end up with something employers will toss in the recycle bin. Your lack of effort screams, “I’m not particularly interested in your company. Frankly, any ol’ job will do.”

Employers want to feel special and want you to write a resume specifically for them. They expect you to clearly show how and why you fit the position in a specific organization.

4. Highlighting duties instead of accomplishments
Your resume needs to show how good you are at your job, but it's all too easy to slip into a mode where you simply start listing your duties. For example:

Attended group meetings and recorded minutes
Worked with children in a day-care setting
Updated departmental files
That’s more or less an echo of your job description. Employers, however, don't care so much about what you've done as what you've accomplished in your various activities. They're looking for statements more like these:

Recorded weekly meeting minutes and compiled them in a Microsoft Word-based file for future organizational reference
Developed three daily activities for preschool-age children and prepared them for a 10-minute holiday program performance
Reorganized 10 years worth of unwieldy files, making them easily accessible to department members
5. Going on too long or cutting things too short
Despite what you may read or hear, there are no real rules governing resume length. Why? Because human beings, who have different preferences and expectations where resumes are concerned, will be reading it.

That doesn't mean you should start sending out five-page resumes, of course. Generally speaking, you usually need to limit yourself to a maximum of two pages. But don't feel you have to use two pages if one will do. Conversely, don't cut the meat out of your resume simply to make it conform to an arbitrary one-page standard.

6. Bad summary
Employers do read your career summary, but too often they plow through vague pufferies like, “Accomplished professional seeking career growth."

Give employers something specific and, more importantly, something that focuses on their needs as well as your own. Example: "An accomplished marketing manager that developed award-winning campaigns for Fortune 500 clients that contributed to 50% increase in stock value.”

7. No action verbs
Avoid using phrases like "responsible for." Instead, use action verbs. Not only do these words help to show off your initiative, they also help punch.........

Career / The Truth About Who Gets Hired -- And Who Doesn't by Worldtrends: 2:14pm On Sep 22, 2018
HR would set up interviews for me, but the hiring decision was mine alone. I was in my early twenties. I was surprised that nobody except me had to approve my hiring decisions.

I would have liked to have someone to confer with. It was a big decision — because only one person can get the job, but sometimes I met three or four qualified candidates.

I wondered how other managers made their selection decisions, so I asked them. Sometimes they said “I tend to hire the person who understands the job best, and asks the smartest questions.” Other managers said “I hire the person with the best work experience and academic credentials.”

I wondered “Is it only in this company that managers make hiring decisions based on shifting and oftentimes very personal factors?” Then I became an HR person, and I had the opportunity to talk to lots of other HR people. Here’s what I learned: deciding which candidate to hire is nearly all art, and very little science.

Hiring managers who can honestly describe their own hiring processes say “I make my hiring decisions based on input from my brain, my heart and my gut.” There are intangibles in the mix. It is no different from the applicant’s point of view.

How do you decide which job to accept, and which jobs to walk away from? You have to weigh the factors you know, but you always realize there are things you can never know about a new job — or a new employee — until you actually start working together.

Your degrees and experience get you in the door, but a live human being has to decide to hire you, and that is a personal decision based on factors the hiring manager him- or herself may not even understand.

There is a subjective element in any hiring decision. You cannot get too attached to any job opportunity, because if you do then you might be crushed when they hire someone else (or don’t hire anyone at all). You cannot afford to waste your precious mojo that way.

The key is to interview as often as you can, and keep putting new irons in the fire. If someone doesn’t want to hire you, fine! They can hire someone else. You cannot stop and pine over the job opportunity that got away. You will never grow your flame wishing people could see your talents when they simply cannot.

Many if not most job seekers make the mistake of believing that if they interview for a job and don’t get the offer, they messed up somehow. They think they failed. That’s ridiculous. Six or eight people interview for every available position — sometimes more than that. Only one person gets the job.

You cannot beat up on yourself just because you interviewed for a job and didn’t get it. It doesn’t mean anything. You might have hated the job if you got it!

You don’t need the whole world to appreciate your talents. There are people who resonate at your frequency and lots more people who can’t see the gifts you bring and therefore don’t deserve them.

Keep your focus on finding the people who resonate at the same frequency you do. Everybody else — including hiring managers who seem to love your background but then drop you like a hot potato and stop returning your calls — is welcome to live and long and happy life without you.

Career / Summer Jobs by Worldtrends: 1:49pm On Sep 16, 2018
Working at a festival over the summer isn't going to boost you bank balance as it's likely you'll only be paid with an entry ticket. However, if you work hard and use your time wisely you can network and build your contacts, which is especially important if you want a career in areas such as event management or to become a live sound engineer, for example.

You'll be expected to do a couple of days work and then the rest of the festival is yours to enjoy. Roles include working behind the bar, checking tickets, stewarding or selling merchandise.

For some roles you'll apply directly to the festival by uploading a CV and details of your availability. For others you'll need to go through the agencies that staff these events.

Summer camps
Spending your summer at a camp working with children is a great way to gain experience if you want to be a teacher or educational mentor. You could work at a general camp or specialise at a camp for children with additional needs or at sports camps. Once you've chosen where you want to work you need to decide what you want to do - roles include mentor, craft assistant, cook or office administrator. Camps run from June to September; you’ll get a salary and in some cases food and accommodation.

Some, such as Camp America and Bunac, allow you to travel for up to 30 days after camp ends allowing you to build your independence, confidence and organisation skills as you book routes, travel and accommodation.

Alternatively you could stay in the UK and get a job at a playscheme over the summer. Also run during other school holidays, they are activity-based programmes for school-aged children. They generally don't last the whole summer and may even be split, which may be helpful if you have less time to dedicate. Local authorities will have a list of what's available and you will need an up-to-date CV to apply. Some settings will ask for an application form followed by an interview.

Wherever you choose to work you'll need to have declared any previous convictions and undergone the criminal records check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Career / How To Write A Resume That Will Get You An Interview by Worldtrends: 3:38am On Sep 14, 2018
Do you need to review how to write a resume? While it’s only a page or two in length, a resume is one of the most important parts of a job application. Your resume is your most powerful tool in telling the story of your professional history to potential employers.

A well-written resume that highlights your most relevant qualifications for the job will help you get selected for an interview. Above all, your resume needs to be consistent, concise, and clear and easy to read.

If it’s not, your resume and cover letter won’t get a second glance from any hiring manager. Read below for information on how to write a resume that will get noticed and help you get invited for an interview.

Choose a Resume Type
There are several basic types of resumes used to apply for job openings. Depending on your personal circumstances, choose a chronological, a functional, a combination, or a targeted resume. A chronological resume (in reverse chronological order) is the simplest format to use, but there may be circumstances where you want to focus on your key accomplishments and skills rather than your employment history. Taking the time to choose the best type of resume for your situation is well worth the effort.

Choose the Right Font and Size
It’s important to choose a font and font size that is legible and leaves enough white space on the page. You also want to keep style features (such as italics, underlining, bold, and the use of bullets) to a minimum; reserve the use of boldface for section headings and for quantifiable achievements that you would like to have “pop” on the page (Example: “Secured and fulfilled $1.5M contract”). When you use a particular style, use it consistently.

Whenever you use a resume example, be sure to customize your resume so it reflects your skills and abilities, and the jobs you are applying for.

Use a Resume Template
Along with resume examples, you can use a resume template as a starting point for creating your own resume. Add your information to the resume template, then tweak and edit it to personalize your resume so that it highlights your own unique skills and abilities.

Use Resume Keywords
Most companies use recruiting management software to screen candidates for job openings. In order to get found, your resume needs to contain keywords that directly target the jobs you are interested in. Spend some time matching your qualifications to the job to ensure you’re including the appropriate keywords and skills. In addition to helping your resume get selected, it will also help the hiring manager see how your skills and experiences make you an ideal candidate for the specific job.

Jazz up Your Job Descriptions
Review the descriptions you’ve written for each job. Are they going to show the hiring manager why you’re a good match? Do they sound impressive? Take a couple of minutes to tweak them a little so they look super impressive.

Get Resume Advice
Writing a resume is hard work, and it’s often a good idea to get help before you send it to employers. You can find resume writing advice and resume writing tips online. You can also meet with a college career counselor if you are a college student or alumnus.
