The United Nations human rights chief on Friday said there was no legal basis for 🇳🇪 Niger's military junta to prosecute deposed president Mohamed Bazoum for high treason, saying the "very notion of freedoms" in the country was at stake.

"This decision is not only politically motivated against a democratically elected President but has no legal basis as the normal functioning of democratic institutions has been cast aside," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said in a statement.

"Generals cannot take it upon themselves to defy - at a whim - the will of the people. Rule-by-gun has no place in today's world," he added.

Leaked diplomatic notes between the Russian Foreign Ministry, Turkish embassies, and Qatar reveal discussions from July 21 to August 8.

The letters indicate that the Kremlin informed 🇹🇷 Erdogan in advance about exiting the grain deal. Under the new agreement, the focus will be on supplying Russian grain to impoverished countries, primarily in Africa. Turkey will act as the organizer, and 🇶🇦 Qatar will serve as the sponsor of the deliveries.

Turkey's Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, requests that Russia resume the previous grain deal, which would include supplies from 🇺🇦 Ukraine as well. Ankara also suggests operating under the auspices of the UN.
