LiteratureDo You Wanna Make Real Money With "a Heart To Mend"? by wumifab(op): 8:03pm On Apr 15, 2010
NLanders,
The book "A heart to mend" by Myne Whitman is out on the stables of MagicWand Publishing. Guess what! We are hoping Nlanders could make some money distributing it. Do you own (or just know someone that owns) a Cyber Cafe, Saloon, biz center or the likes or you just know any location where young people gather like a tutorial center or you wana distribute in your tertiary institution, this gonna be a great way to make extra cash.

I have to add, the first set of books comes with a raffle ticket where people can win a Ipod, Thesaurus, Browsing Modem, flash drives, Memory cards etc. Each book even comes with a free bookmark too.

Every distribution centre get a beautiful flex banner for advert display and other promotional items. The profit per unit is attractive. Give us a call today at MagicWand, and we will give you details on how to pick up copies (or send then to you) and discuss other terms in full.

@gorociano
For greenhorn (or redhorn,  grin lol) the cost of publishing is the same. Usually, the cost is dependent on the volume of the book (number of pages), number of unit/copies you want to publish, the quality of print and material plus few other consideration in packaging. If this details are clear then we can talk figures. As regards returns, your returns can range from 50 to 90% even more depending on your pricing. but on the average, you can make over 60% on a good book with very good marketing/distribution which is the main thing. you can call me and i'll see if i can get you a cost estimate on any book you are hoping to publish. 234-80598564332.

i hope have been helpful, let me know if you still have more questions.

LiteratureRe: Post Your Publishing Challenges Here! (Any Question) by wumifab(op): 5:17pm On Apr 10, 2010
@Myne: Nigerian publishing outfits can produce any standard of work as long as the clients pay the price. Printing as greatly advanced in recent times and so did the Nigeria print industry. In magazine publishing, the likes of Total Woman(TW) and Autoshopper (which was formerly printed in the US) are now printed in Nigeria so are a couple of other mags printed to international standards and can compete with the likes of Ebony or O(oprah). Similarly, book publishing can also compete globally but the cost of publishing books of international quality put a lot of people off. See what happened to Bishop David Oyedepo's books, when they were reviewed to international quality in print, the prices went up. But I have to add, the prices are still fair when compared to prices of other foreign books of similar quality.

In summary I'll say, 'when you pay a Nigerian piper the right price, he will play any tune you want; perfectly'.

i hope I have been helpful.

LiteratureRe: Get Your Book Published, For Free! by wumifab(m): 8:36am On Apr 06, 2010
@Orikinla: As regards insurance for manuscript, we do not encourage ANY writer to sen it his/her full script. All we accept is only a synopsis plus the first 3 chapters. the first 3 chapter will help us in appreciating the writer's skill and the synopsis will give a hang on the story. These am sure is safe enough for any work.
As regards meeting us, we are just a call away.

Literature"a Heart To Mend" Hits Nigerian Market Big Time! Don't Miss It: by wumifab(op): 8:39am On Mar 31, 2010
Nairalanders, it's great to know that Myne Whitman's "A Heart to Mend" will be available in Nigeria from next week 8th of April, want to know more or simply want to locate the nearest store that will stock it, call 08059864322, Guardian Life Calls Her "The new Girl On the Block"

The Blurb

Sheltered Gladys Eborah has spent most of her life in a suburb of Enugu brought up in a deprived single parent household after losing her father as a young girl. After finishing her education, she moves to Lagos to seek a job and moves in with an estranged aunt who now wants to be forgiven for all perceived wrongs. Gladys suspects Aunt Isioma abandoned them out of disdain for their poverty, and has the uneasy role of the bridge between both families.

Her new friendships and career achievements gradually transition Gladys into an independent young woman. Soon, she begins to fall for wealthy Edward Bestman who, though physically attracted to her, is emotionally unavailable. Edward is very wealthy, but he is haunted by the past of his illegitimate birth and other secrets he will not share.

The themes of premarital sex, social class mobility, and romantic ups and downs that mark a budding love are fully explored. However, Myne Whitman takes the story even further. Some unnamed people are about to take over Edward’s business empire and Gladys is implicated. Who are these people who want to betray him and destroy their happiness?

Check Out Soon of The Reviews and Comments

“Written by a Nigerian…with Nigerian characters and setting, “A heart to mend” is a fun and fast read.” – PAMELA STITCH, African Loft Magazine

“…a powerful story of how love doesn’t strut, never gives up, never looks back and keeps going to the end.” - SHOLA ADU-OKUBOTE, Femme Lounge Online

“…something different. Some may say it is ideal to think about love amidst all these but love (romance) still exists against all odds.” - TEMITAYO OLOFINLUA

“A HEART TO MEND will bring tears to the eyes and cheers at the end especially for those who have experienced the search for a career or tumultuous family and emotional relationships.” – AHAOMA KANU, National Daily Newspaper

“Nigerian readers can now satisfy their yearning for well written, homegrown romance stories while the foreign readers can treat themselves to a different kind of romance--one made in the highly boisterous commercial Lagos.” - NEXT Newspaper

Myne Whitman’s book, A Heart to Mend, makes a bold statement to the contrary. It shows that we do not only fall in love and marry for love, we also use love to conquer a wide range of situations that could have ordinarily been a bit difficult to shoulder alone. http://nzesylva./2010/01/05/review-of-the-book-a-heart-to-mend/:

@judchuks20
First I have to ask, what kind of publishing are you looking at that you do not want to pay for? Are u selling the right to your work or you just want to stick with royalties? Your post seems rather incomplete.

About MagicWand's physical address, the fact that we are based in Ikeja Lagos Nigeria will do for now on a public domain like nairaland. People call in for details. Generally, publishers do not allow unsolicited submissions except you want your work to land in the pile.

We have gotten numerous calls already and we're considering a couple of works right now. If I may add, we are working on the novel of a nairalander based in the US, if such an individual will overlook the distance and yet contact us, what do we say of people based in Nigeria.

Good luck with your publisher search. I could help you with a few,
Lantern ltd in Oregun
Longman Plc on Oba Akran Rd Ikeja
University Press in Ibadan.

You can give them a try. 'hope we've been helpful.

Always honored to be of service to you.

Thanks.

LiteratureOver 2 Million Copies Sold! by wumifab(op):
Lanre Akpan, a 21 year old nigerian whose book “shouts of a whisper” has sold over two million copies around the globe is…
I sit back and ask myself, is this possible for books written by nigerians and published in Nigeria? This might be a ficticious story but the question keeps lingering, why can’t it happen, often? Why can’t our books gross in millions in sales?

Do the western world have better contents that make there books instant success? Not always. Do they have better literary prowess we can’t attain? Of course not, Prof. Wole Soyinka proved them wrong. So why do our books loss steam having sold just few copies, some selling just a few hundreds?

The answer can’t be far fetched, some of our authors do not dedicate time in reasearch while others have poor writing skills, plain simple! The  few that tackles these first two inevitable evils only work tirelessly at having there book gotten out of press, no plans on how to get it in the hands of the readers.

Authors spend months even years in the closets writing books but if published they do not spend a moment thinking of how to get there books sold. Our story is similar to the proverbial hard working farmer who after a fruitful year does not know how to get his produce to the city. What  a waste!

Really, it’s hard enough to be an author, to couple that with marketing, it could be killing! That is why at MagicWand Publishing, we believe Authors should be Authors and Salemen should stick to selling. Publishing with us gives authors an unequalled priviledge to not just get the best in print and design but also a detailed marketing/selling outlay. Even for client who publish on our vanity plan, a marketing plan is drawn out to help them poliferate the market, making an impact that will be felt the world over.

Who say there's no hope for publishing in Nigeria and Africa as a whole? We have come to set the pace, redefine the terms and renew litrary zest. A radical revolution has come in publishing.

LiteratureRe: Get Your Book Published, For Free! by wumifab(m): 8:42pm On Feb 03, 2010
@ Estrella
Dear,
I understand your fears.

On the issues of “free publishing”, I will have to reiterate, our publishing could come free. When our outfit decides to bear the burden of production cost for an author’s work with him or her not having to pay a dime, what will you say that is? Usually, we let the author and our negotiators decided on favourable pay-back terms. If such deal goes sour, who bears the brunt? Whose money just when down the drain? Ours not your. So I have to say again, our free means FREE.

As regards our previous works, we, under the name “The Illussionist” (formerly our trade name but now our graphic department/patner) have published several works, most published vanity, so we can’t take much credit for the success or failure as the case maybe. Our published magazine include (both print and electronic) Applause Africa, Epistles IV, TNE Journals, Green Magazine, The Nigerian Entreprenuer, Eko Mag to mention but a few. In books, we have so far gotten on book stands Of father and sons, Junior Teachers Hand Book,TNE BizGuide, Father’s Menu e.t.c. plus small hand books. Works on the pipeline include; Shores, Far Home, No time for tears (previously published but we’re planning on rebranding it), these are all books. Magazines include B&B, ChangeNigeria and host of other untitled books and magazines.

Finally on the issues of abstract submission, I have to state, ideas are considerably safe as abstarcts. Works go beyond just an idea but the writing prowess of the author has a lot to do determining the success or failure. Your work is an extension of you, no other person can be you. Prof. Wole Soyinka and J.P. Clark both wrote poems titled “Abiku”, despite the similarity in title, the concept they where expressing and to an extent, academic and writing skills, the two poems still came out distinctively different. Relax, you are safe with us. May I add, if forwarding an abstract is this “unsafe”, what will you say when you need to forward your first few chapters.

Estrella, I will really love to speak with you personally. Specifically ask for me, wumifab when you call. I read your short work –Unclinched and poem-Tortured Innocence. ‘Waiting to hear from you and other authors craving to be published.
