Simply implies that UNN needs to step up her game. Not doing very well as the only south eastern University in Top 10.
Education2015 Webometrics Ranking : Nigeria’s Best 100 Universities (latest) by Xcely(op):
Fellow Nairalanders, finally the wait for the first webometrics ranking of Nigerian universities is almost over as the 4ICU edition of the ranking has been released. The competition got fiercer as notable trends include Unilag ousting Unilorin, and Covenant University, which is the only private university in Top 10, coming up from 8th last year to the Top 5. OAU remained calm in 2nd place and Landmark slipped out of the list to 12th (from 5th).

It's intriguing to note that 100% of the universities in my nominee list for No. 1 spot (released 2 weeks ago) made the top 5 list. Check here for that post www.nairaland.com/2071556/nigerian-universities-likely-no.1-january

EducationRe: Prospects And Feasibility Of A Nigerian Gaining Admission Into MIT. by Xcely: 1:51pm On Jan 09, 2015
Here's my advice. 1) finish with a GPA of 4.40 and above from your undergraduate program.(average gpa of MIT intakes is 4.5, so anything close to this or above is fair) 2) Apply for Masters at MIT. To do this, you first need to blaze the GRE mercilessly. By this I mean score above 160/170 in both quantitative and verbal. Its even safer to get a 170 perfect score in quants just like most MIT intakes. Also score high on TOEFL. ( the GRE score is your strongest bargaining tool for admission because it allows adcoms[admission committees] to see how you compare to other applicants regardless of undergraduate university and country) 3) Lastly craft a good statement of purpose for your MIT application. (a very strong statement shows how you are an all-rounder, i.e not a complete nerd. You should point out extracurricular activities you engaged in while in school, relevant internships [at big firms ]you took on while in school as well as competitons you entered for. ) 4.) Pray. ( MIT is the world's best university, so even with all the stellar grades and experience, there are still better applicants in the pool. Let God's favour work for you) 5) Voila! You're in!

Unijos nko?
UNIJOS is a great school, but relative to these schools, it hasnt fared well enough on Webometrics to be on this list. Remember this list is based on "Webometrics". UNIJOS comes tops when other criteria are used.

About Webometrics, see this exhibit from Wikipedia.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, also known as Ranking Web of World Universities, is a ranking system for the world's universities based on a composite indicator that takes into account both the volume of the Web contents (number of web pages and files) and the visibility and impact of these web publications according to the number of external inlinks (site citations) they received. The ranking is published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) located in Madrid.

The aim of the Ranking is to improve the presence of the academic and research institutions on the Web and to promote the open access publication of scientific results.[1] The ranking started in 2004 and is updated every January and July. Today it provides Web indicators for more than 12,000 universities worldwide.
EducationNigerian Universities Likely To Be NO.1 In January 2015 Webometrics Ranking by Xcely(op): 6:07pm On Jan 01, 2015
The past three years of the Webometric Rankings have seen fierce movements of Top Nigerian Universities' ranks up and down the lists. The only exception would be Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), which has remained unmoved on the list, occupying the number 1 spot for almost two years. Nevertheless, we have seen very interesting surprises (such as Covenant University's rise to 2nd place for the first time ever, even displacing University of Ibadan and University of Lagos) which has prompted my release of "Most likely Universities for No. 1 rank on the January edition of the 2015 Webometrics Ranking". I know there are a lot of other people keenly looking forward to that ranking, but here are my top 5 picks (In no particular order) based on past performance on the rankings and current developments in these schools.

- University of Ibadan (UI)
Nigeria's Premier University has remained (unshaken) in the Top 3 for many years running and its last ranking of 3rd place behind Covenant University, is certainly a very strategic point to make a dramatic comeback for No.1. We should certainly not forget that it remains Nigeria's "PREMIER" University. wink

- University of Lagos (UNILAG)
With a tendency to spring surprises every now and then, we should not underestimate the might of one of Nigeria's most competitive schools. UNILAG has achieved the N0.1 feat before and can do it again.

- University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
This school is certainly no stranger to "Firsts". Known mostly for its "No ASUU strike" policy, the school operates one of Nigeria's fastest Federal University calenders. The school has very strong ICT initiatives and is a major Favorite for No. 1 in this coming edition. It's interesting to note that the school also occupies No. 1 on another respected Webometric ranking.

- Covenant University (CU)
Highly reputed as Nigeria's best private University, Covenant University has been giving top Federal Schools a run for their money on recent rankings. With its latest ranking of 2nd place (only ousted by OAU), which is also its best so far, a lot is expected from the subsequent webometrics editions. The university which also stands as Africa's 2nd best private university, has risen dramatically to the top 10 over the last 2 years. It's latest feat is only an indication of what to expect in the future.

- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
Undoubtedly, OAU has proved its worth across different spheres of assessments. Having maintained the No. 1 spot on the Webometric ranking for 2 years running, there's every possibility OAU is coming back for No. 1. What's however unclear is if the distorted academic session the school experienced last year can in anyway affect its viability for the No. 1 spot on January's ranking.

So there it goes, our contenders for the January Edition of The 2015 Webometric rankings! Success!

Its a pity to see how ill-informed persons on these thread are. First, Covenant University as a private university, is currently Africa's 25th best university and 2nd best private on the continent. Looking for professors, quality lecturers and facilities? Go there and see what's on ground before you starting spewing unpleasant stuff about private schools on nairaland. Hey bro, CU is the way forward!
EducationRe: 7 FACTS: Covenant University Will Lead Africa’s Universities In 7 Yrs [Modified] by Xcely(op):
ENABLING ENVIRONMENT AND SUPPORTIVE CULTURE FOR CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH

With stable power supply and impressive facilities and equipment for research, there’s no limit to what you can do as a researcher at CU. Every year, Grants are released to facilitate and incentivize research at CU. It’s no wonder, the school has publications in just about every high impact journal you can think of. It should interest you that CU has the 12th largest repository in Africa, the largest in Nigeria and 402nd in the world (as quoted by webometrics)

SUPERB ATTRACTION FOR NOTABLE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCHERS

Wherever the aforementioned are present, it is typical to draw attention of international academics of reputable standards. That’s why the school has played host to series of professionals from top schools in Europe and America. Most recently, Covenant University welcomed two Nobel Laureates in Economics (one from Harvard) to its faculty as visiting professors. Thus becoming the first University in Africa to achieve such a feat.

STRONG FINANCIAL BASE

A major factor that determines how well (and fast) a university can rise on league tables is the financial base of such an institution. So it’s no surprise that some of the world’s best universities are also the richest. Take Harvard for instance, which was worth $30 Billion about two years ago. As an institution, Covenant University is just about the richest amongst private universities in Africa. It also helps to know that the Chancellor of the University is ranked as one of the richest in the world.

IVYLEAGUE-TYPE REPUTATION/BRANDING

A major influence in ranking is the reputation of the university. At a time when Harvard was 3rd on most ranking bodies, it was still said to be the most highly reputed university in the world. This implied that the average lecturer, student or layman at the time, still thought that Harvard was the best. Consequently, the University and its affiliates (e.g HBS) continue to rake in the finest applicants (faculty and students) from around the world. This has helped Harvard remain amongst the world’s top 3 Universities for ages. A similar trend has been observed for CU. Strongly associated with the CU brand is prestige, brilliance and exceptional presence in the world’s top firms. Slowly, Multinational employers and top graduate schools are beginning to place a premium on the CU brand thus making the university’s rankings soar over the years. Three years ago, CU was ranked 8000+ in the world. This year it is ranked 2000+ by the same ranking body (webometrics).

All these reasons put together ensconce CU on the track to becoming Africa’s best university in 7 years.

Miscellanea [Updated]
CU is currently Africa’s 15th best University
CU is Nigeria’s best University [Webometrics]
CU is Africa’s 2nd best Private University after American University of Cairo (Egypt)
CU has the 13th largest repository in Africa, largest in Nigeria and 535th in the world
CU is the cheapest private university in Africa with the best value for money (ranked 15th, 2nd Private in Africa, Avg. school fees N600, 000, which is likely to drop next year). Compare with American University of Cairo (ranked 9th in Africa, 1st Private in Africa N3,000,000)
Education7 FACTS: Covenant University Will Lead Africa’s Universities In 7 Yrs [Modified] by Xcely(op):
Rewind to 2004, Covenant University, barely 2 years old, was ranked at the bottom of all rankings/charts you could find. It was popular amongst graduating high-school students and undergraduates as a university with lax entry standards for average to below average students, and was also famous for its out-of-the-world rules and regulations, popularly referred to as an "Advanced Secondary School". Okay, the rules and regulations are still there (although more lax now), however, over the last decade, the university has transformed into a new sensation, a hub of some of the best students and faculty on the continent. It is quite obvious now that some of the top universities in Nigeria and Africa are now threatened by it's unprecedented rise on most ranking tables/leagues. Listed below are seven reasons why Covenant University might oust the top 10 African universities to become number one in the next seven years;

STELLAR , TOP-PERCENTILE UNDERGRADUATES

Gone are the days when Covenant University was synonymous with low JAMB and WAEC grades. Being the Private University with the highest quota of applications amongst private universities in Nigeria, the university has become quite picky over the years. In fact in 2012, the university indicated that only applicants with 215+ on JAMB could seat its CUSAT (Covenant University Scholastic Aptitude Test) after which successful candidates on the test take the famous oral interviews. With such cut-throat selection standards, only the best get in. So it’s no surprise that the school teems with alumni of highly competitive high schools, the likes of Loyola Jesuit, KC, QC, NTIC e.t.c. Consequently, like GIGO, you also get the youngest, smartest, undergraduate researchers you could ever find on the continent (NB: average graduation age at CU is 21). Check with the world’s biggest firms and you’ll find a hebronite! From McKinsey to Google to General Electric to GoldmanSachs to KPMG to Shell to Microsoft to PWC, they are present in teeming numbers (and yes, the school’s just 12 years old). Of course CU undergrads are among the best in research. Amongst the recent nominees of the famous International research award, The Undergraduate Awards 2014, a CU student was nominated in Engineering and Mechanical sciences category alongside students from Princeton, University of Edinburgh, University of Toronto, University of Manchester. By this feat, CU became the first African University to be featured in the awards alongside Unilorin.

WORLD CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT

With amenities and research equipment worth billions of naira, Covenant University has just about the most expensive ultramodern infrastructural pieces in Africa, obtainable in only the most advanced universities in the world. Asides from the spectacularly designed couthy hostels, iconic senate building, and the eccentric lecture theatre, the university has some of Africa’s most equipped college and departmental buildings with more on the way. This year alone, the University completed its state-of-the-art Health Centre and Entrepreneurial Development Centre. Much is also expected of the ongoing million dollar Research facility currently in construction by the Covenant University Construction Agency (CUCA) [yes! CU has its own Construction Agency, no kidding!]. It goes without saying that a synergy of the avant-garde, divine Intellect and architectural background of the founder plays out extrinsically on the CU campus.
With all the lustre, calm, brilliance and resplendence of the CU campus, it can even be argued that the worst of CU’s pessimists become the best of optimists after a walk through Hebron.

INGENIOUS FACULTY BASE with UNMATCHED CULTURE OF DILIGENCE

From top management to maintenance and sanitary workers, the culture of innovation and diligence can hardly go unnoticed amongst Covenant University staff. The saying “If you need faculty who work like MBB strategy consultants then come to CU” is certainly not out of place. The University’s recent vision “1 of 10 in 10” has seen the wake of a new work culture amongst its academics. This has also sparked a revolution in the quality of indigenous research with numerous awards locally and internationally to show. It is typical of CU faculty to close work by 5pm and return by 10pm to work through 3 am all at will. (of course they’d be awake by 6am to start the new day).

kropelgrada: I've being there and i have seen there infrastructure and blah blah
My point is that the standard of learning there is nothing compared to the state or federal universities around
Abi na infrastracture we go chop?
That brings me back to the question someone asked earlier
What is the basis for this ranking?
Maybe i will agree more if you say the ranking is based on infrastructure.
Please check this list of topnotch undergraduate researchers in the world (especially Engineering and life sciences). Tell me the only 2 universities you see from Africa. Then erase this crap you've written about Covenant University. ***proudlyhebronite
