Former Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has reacted to reports that she's allegedly being investigated by the EFCC for embezzlement, calling media headlines misleading and untrue. Her statement below..

We want to clarify that some of the media reports alleging that the EFCC is investigating former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are misleading and untrue. This is clear from eye witness accounts of the Budget 2016 presentation by the EFCC at the House of Representatives and gaps in the reported stories.

The headlines are a misrepresentation of what the EFCC Chairman actually said during the event. While the headlines claimed that the EFCC Chairman, in response to a question by an APC, member Hon Razak Atunwa, stated that Dr Okonjo-Iweala is under investigation, the actual words quoted in the same reports told a very different story.

His words: “Very soon we will go into the petroleum industry. Such investigation requires that we have to build capacity, we have to bring in experts to enable us tackle what we are doing properly and the investigation must be conducted properly. We have internal lawyers and external lawyers. We have to pay insurance…”

A Nigerian man named Obiechina Okete based in Reading, UK has been jailed for 16 years after being found guilty of two counts of rape. The 38 year old was sentenced at Reading Crown Court on Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 after being found guilty by a jury at the same court on Wednesday, October 28.

Okete was given nine years in prison for the first rape and seven years for the second, to be served consecutively. A supervised license period of nine years will follow and Okete will be added to the sex offenders' register.

The sentences relate to the rape of a woman in her 30s in Reading in the early hours of Friday, February 27 2015 and also of a woman in her late teens who was raped by him, also in Reading in the early.....

An 8year old boy is being charged with beating a 1-year-old girl to death while they were left home alone as their mothers went to a nightclub, Alabama police said Tuesday...

Birmingham police spokesman Sean Edwards said the boy beat and killed 1-year-old Kelci Lewis when she wouldn't stop crying. The mother of the toddler, 26-year-old Katerra Lewis, also is charged with manslaughter for her role in the death of her daughter.

"This is by far one of the saddest cases that I have witnessed and been a part of since I became a police officer," Edwards said. "This type of irresponsibility on behalf of a parent is totally unacceptable," he said...

Police said a murder warrant has been obtained for the boy who is now in the care of Alabama's child welfare agency, the Department of Human Resources. His case will go through the family court system.

Edwards said the 8-year-old was the oldest of six children left alone as their mothers, Katerra Lewis and a friend, went to a nightclub on the night of Oct 11. The 8-year old is the son of Katerra Lewis' friend. The friend has not been charged...

A 6-year-old who was in the home that night told police what happened, Edwards said, and the information was consistent with the toddler's injuries.

Kelci Lewis suffered severe head trauma and major damage to her internal organs, police said.

Edwards said the 8-year-old is the youngest murder defendant he's ever been aware of in the Birmingham area...

Area boys in Ibadan on Tuesday terrorized the people of that community, attacking passersby and injuring at least three policemen from the Apata division who responded to the chaos...

An eyewitness said that trouble started when someone bought a mobile telephone from a trader but discovered that the telephone was faulty.

It was learnt that when the person tried to return the phone, the trader refused to accept it and denied that it was faulty stating that it was purchased in good condition. The buyer was displeased by the response, then gathered his friends to the location...

The eyewitness said:
“The buyer, who is a notorious ‘area boy’ got angry after discovering that the telephone he had paid for was not good.
“The Igbo trader in Apata stood his ground that he would not accept the phone back. Before now, there had been tension between the Igbo traders in the area and some suspected miscreants who extort money from the traders and commercial drivers...

“The buyer left but returned with many touts who attacked the traders and chased them away. They also attacked other people while three policemen were injured.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed that there was trouble in the area but said it was a misunderstanding between area biys and commercial...

PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) chieftain in Kogi State, Adamu Enape, has been kidnapped by gunmen....

Enape, who is a member of the Kogi State Pension Board, was kidnapped on his way back from the governorship campaign tour of Idah in the Kogi-East senatorial district.

Wickedness? A coffin maker simply identified as Papa Ogada, dumped his 14-year-old son in a well, accusing him of being behind his inability to be successful in his business...

“Some of us had already retired for the day when we started hearing shouts and cries coming from the location of the abandoned well, but we thought people were fighting.

“As the shouts increased, we summoned courage and got to the area and discovered that it was coming from the abandoned well. We got a rope and bucket, threw them inside and the boy managed to cling to and was pulled out..

“He was already weak with injuries. We thanked God the well had been out of use; he might not have survived.”

A young Nanny,Hawa,15,was brutally beaten by her employer, Nafisa. She slashed her with razor blade, rubbed pepper into her wound. According to Hawa, she came to serve her evil boss 3 years ago. The abuse started immediately. At first, she was ALLOWED to go to school and shortly afterwards she withdrew her from school. The abuse escalated by the day to the use of objects. This last one was about not feeding the kids on time.

According to Hawa, her Nafisa traveled to Kaduna and returned home in the evening. Nafisa asked if the kids has eaten and she replied that she is getting them ready to bath before serving them food. She got upset thst it was late and Nafisa started beating her. Hawa added that the instruction is the kids must bath before eating dinner and the kids does not obey her when they don't see the mother.

But Nafisa who returned from her trip with her junior sister called Ramatu, both instructed her to take of her clothes and stand stack naked to the glaring of the kids. Then they both started beating her.

At a point, they turned off the lights to prevent her from running around. When they eventually caught her, the sister held her down, turned on the lights and Nafisa brought out razor and slashed her places with pepper in sight to rob on the wounds.

Standing naked, Nafisa grabbed her breast and said she was going to slash off her breast. That's when she summoned all her will to break free; before help came.

As soon they got her her dress, she started trying.....

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly listed his dos and don't to all the ministers-designate ahead of their inauguration this Wednesday November 11th....

The dos and don'ts were listed to the ministers during the ministerial retreat which took place in Abuja last week Thursday and Friday...

While speaking at the retreat, Buhari charged the ministers to ensure that all of their foreign trips must be duty related. Among the dos and don't include;
- Foreign travels must be duty-related
- ministers must operate within lean resources
-no more flamboyance
- strict adherence to the rule of law -compliance to Civil Service Rules
-living above board
-cooperation with Permanent Secretaries
- no more rancour between ministers and ministers of State
- appointment of some aides should be from the civil service - drastic reduction of vehicles in convoys
-all decisions must lead to change.

A source at the presidency who spoke with the Nation said
“The ministers have been told to limit their foreign trips to only those that are duty-related, they must relate to their work. And all travels abroad must be approved by the President. No more travelling just for the sake of it.

As you have heard on Friday, they are expected to reduce the vehicles in their convoys to a reasonable level to save cost.

The ministers are to do things differently in view of the lean resources at their disposal. Flamboyance and extravagance by cabinet members are gone. The Ministers have been given copies of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations. The President wants compliance with the document. He also warned against conflict with Permanent Secretaries. On the relationship between ministers and ministers of state, some guidelines....

More than a year after her mother, Hope Ruller died, "Mary Kersting" kept the decomposing body of the 93-year-old woman in her flat in Gloversville, Upstate New York and stole more than $13,000 (£8,600) in social security checks belonging to Hope Ruller.....

A Delaware woman was arrested and charged with having unlawful sex with her daughter’s 13-year-old boyfriend.

Elaine B. Goodman is charged with fourth degree rape of a minor, three counts of third degree rape, two counts of second degree unlawful sexual contact with a minor, and sexual solicitation of a minor.

The child told police he met up with Goodman after he sneaked out of his house late one night.

He said he and Goodman drove around the city, then parked in a secluded area and climbed into the back seat together.

He told a children’s advocate social worker that he and Goodman kissed and undressed before he took his you-know-what and put it in her you-know-what.

He said they had sexual intercourse until 4:30 a.m. Then Goodman dropped the boy off at home so she could get ready for work.

Saturday Sun exclusively gathered that the 19-year-old mother of the baby, "Chinyere Amechi" had fled her parents’ house in Lagos for almost one and half years during which she got impregnated by her boyfriend, one Nonso Nnamba....

A reg­istered midwife with a Lagos state government-run maternity hospital is at the moment helping the police unravel why she bought a day-old baby boy for N50,000 from his teen­age mother....

She ultimately delivered her baby and eventually offered the child to nurse Virginia Nwauzor, a midwife at Maternal and Child Health Centre (MCC), strategically located at First Gate, along First Avenue, Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos...

Mrs Nwauzor in turn took the baby to another woman, a 51-year-old member of the syndicate, Mrs. Rose Ekewe to also trade with.

The deal, however, fell apart like a pack of cards when Chinyere returned to her parents as a prodigal daughter. Obviously glad that they eventually found their daughter that has been missing for months, her parents took her to a private hospital for medical check-up.

The medical exami­nation, however, revealed that Chinyere had given birth. Armed with the medical report, her parents asked for the whereabouts of the baby but she told them a lie; that the baby had died and buried. Not satisfied with her explana­tion, her parents probed further and under pressure, Chin­eye eventually opened up to her parents on how a nurse at MCC gave her N50,000 to get the baby from her.

She also alleged that she gave the money to her boyfriend and father of her baby who used it to rent a room apartment at Orile area of the state. With that, the matter was reported to the Satellite police station which had so far invited and quizzed the medical director of the hospital, while the trio of Mrs Nwauzor, Mrs Ekewe and Nonso were arrested and still being detained as the investigation goes on with the baby still missing.

Chinyere’s confession also led to the arrest of three oth­er staffers of the hospital. They include the gynaecologist who took delivery of the baby, the matron in-charge of the nurses and another lady in the administrative section.

Realising that their game was up, Mrs. Nwauzor told the police that she assisted Chinyere to get admitted in the hos­pital when she learnt of the pathetic situation that she was in. She claimed that Chinyere told her that she was a desti­tute and needed a home to keep the child once he was born.

Upon delivery, Mrs. Nwauzor took Chinyere and the new born child to the house of her friend, Mrs. Ekewe who was living alone in Satellite town. She claimed that it was Mrs. Ekewe who gave N50,000 to the Chinyere to assist her since she was a destitute. The amount, she said, was meant to help her get an accommodation and start up a little business.

When the police asked Mrs. Ekewe the whereabouts of the baby that was left in her care, she confessed that she handed the baby over to a childless couple since she could not afford to take care of the child. She promised to help the police trace the couple whom she sold the baby to.

Meanwhile, a reliable source at the hospital that wit­nessed the entire scheme unfold told Saturday Sun that the entire drama happened in the last two weeks when Chinyere was admitted in the hospital.

“We were surprised that the young lady who never attended ante-natal in the hospital was suddenly admitted. No one understood why Mrs. Atuanya (as she is known by colleagues) suddenly developed interest in the case and was personally running around to ensure that all that was needed during delivery was provided.

Even when she delivered, the woman kept saying that she has no money nor family member to come and pay the hospital bill. We were still contemplating what to do to her when we learnt that an anonymous person had paid her bills. Everybody was surprised and even asked her how she did it and she explained that it was God that sent a helper her way.

It was when the police stormed the hospital with the mother of the child that we understood why she was so nice to the woman,” the source said.

When Saturday Sun visited the hospital, the staff were seen in groups discussing the unfortunate situation. One of the security men on duty lamented that he does not un­derstand why the police had to arrest the medical director whom he said could not have known that the child was sold.

“I still find it hard to believe that Mrs. Atuanya (Mrs. Nwauzor) will do such an evil thing. Imagine, N50, 000 for a newborn baby.”

When contacted, Lagos police command spokesman, DSP Joe Offor confirmed the incident and said that he does not have the detail of the matter.

A 63 year old Man, Peter Frederiksen, who was allegedly found with 21 pieces of female Instruments appeared before a South African court today November 4th. Frederiksen was arrested back in September after the mutilated vaginas were allegedly found in his home. Surgical equipment and anaesthetic drugs were also said to have been found in the property...

According to reports, It’s believed his wife, 28-year-old Anna Matseliso Molise, told police he drugged her and cut off private parts of her anatomy while she was incapacitated. She was due to testify but was gunned down and killed while leaving her house last month. Police believe most of the victims are from the Lesotho area. Nigeria President 'Muhammadu Buhari' and 'Governor Ayo Fayose' of Ekiti state are in a war of words over the state of Nigeria’s economy...

The Ekiti Governor was the first to fire the salvo when he accused Mr. Buhari’s administration of paying out the lowest-ever federally distributed allocations among the three tiers of the government.

The Nigerian government had shared a little over N389 billion for the month of October to the three tiers of government.
Mr. Fayose reacted to the low figure while speaking at the graduation ceremony of College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, in which he asked Mr. Buhari to come clean to Nigerians on the state of the economy..

Mr. Buhari reacted angrily to Mr. Fayose’s insinuations by warning the governor to stop making unsubstantiated allegations about the nation’s economy.
Mr. Buhari, who spoke through his media aide, Garba Shehu, said Mr. Fayose’s comments were reckless, adding that “the governor didn’t get his facts correct”.

Mr. Shehu also faulted Mr. Fayose’s claims that the N389 billion shared for the month October was the lowest ever in the history of the country, saying the lowest ever allocation to the three ties was issued by the Peoples Democratic Party government of Goodluck Jonathan.

“Governor Fayose needs to be advised to desist from spreading falsehood against the person and government of President Muahmmadu Buhari as has become characteristic of him. He needs to get his facts right before making accusations of the nature he makes.

“The governor equally knows full well that his party in government ruined the economy to the extent that workers in 27 states went for several months without salary. This crisis situation has now been reversed in nearly all the states. Governor Fayose is himself in line for the collection of his state’s bailout..

“Under the PDP federal government, ministries were not given overhead costs for five months while the capital budget was unpaid for six months in the run-up to the exit of the PDP administration. Is there anyone in that party with a moral justification to criticise the Buhari administration which is working hard to clean up the mess they (PDP) left behind?,” Mr. Shehu said.

However, Mr. Fayose also reacted angrily on Monday saying he won’t let Mr. Buhari “take Nigeria back to military era”.
He said the statement issued by Mr. Garba on behalf of the president is a “demonstration of military dictatorship mentality”.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, the Ekiti governor said it was sad that the presidency could be warning a Nigerian, who is heading one of the country’s federating units on what to say and what not to say.
“Governor Fayose will continue to say the truth in interest Nigeria and its people because the Governor is not one of those that will go underground because of political persecution,” he said.

He also insisted that the country’s economy was in serious recession, adding that; “the president himself attested to this when he said that the country was broke and this has also been corroborated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Group financial report, indicating that the corporation incurred a total loss of N120.07bn in the months of August and September.

“JP Morgan is also removing Nigeria from its Emerging Market Bond Index, a move analysts say would have far reaching implications for the country’s dwindling economy as investors could move their funds to competing countries, resulting in higher lending rates,” he said..

Two (2)suspected female drug traffickers identified as Abdulrasaq Modinat Alake and Mbonu Chizoba have been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos in connection with the exportation of 4.450kg of cocaine to India and 7kg of cannabis to China..


One of the suspects, Chizoba, is a second time offender as she had been arrested for the same offence in 2013. She has a pending case at the Federal High Court Ikoyi..

A wicked woman almost condemned the face of an innocent boy with hot water because of her heartlessness. ..

Nwanga Chidiebere, a 16-year-old boy servant is battling for his life after he was attacked by his madam, a femal doctor at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) whose name is given as Jane-Glad Ugba..

Chidiebere is hospitalised at the Plastic Surgery Department of the hospital following the attack. The boy who is under excruciating pain after the ordeal explained that he had just returned from school on the fateful day and was about washing clothes when his boss asked him to go and boil yam which her children would eat.

He said while the yam was on the stove, he decided to start to wash the clothes, with plans to check it from time to time. According to him, while he was still washing, Ugba asked her eldest son to go and wash the plates. Chidiebere disclosed that the boy left the door open while he went to clean the lines on which he would spread the clothes.


Heartless woman, Dr. Jane-Glad Ugba

The JSS 3 student of Presco Secondary School, Abakaliki, said while he was cleaning the lines, his boss started yelling that he left the door open. He said: “I told her that I was not the one that left the door open but her son. While she was still scolding me, her husband came out and asked me to lie down despite my plea that I was not the one who opened the door and I immediately lied down."

Chidiebere explained that as he was still lying down, the woman walked to the pot and started yelling that he left the yam to get burnt. He added:

“In anger, she grabbed the pot and emptied the whole hot content on my back and it injured me seriously.

“The pain was so much that I ran outside where I almost cried out my eyeballs from their sockets. She then asked me to go and clean where I washed clothes and after that I should pack my things and leave her house that she did not want to live with me again.”

The victim said he went to see the sister of his ‘Oga’ (Mr Ugba) who, after seeing his burnt skin, called her brother. According to him, Mr Ugba asked him to come back home but before he got home, they had already locked the gate.

He maintained that he had to sleep in a Skeletal Assemblies of God Church site around Goddy Ogbaga Avenue until the next morning when he went back to his madam and found out that

the gate was still locked. With nowhere to go, Chidiebere said he roaming about when a female member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) accosted him and asked him why he was loitering about.

According to him, the NSCDC official threatened to arrest him before she noticed the burns on his face and asked him what happened. He said after his explanation, the officer took him to the hospital. Chidiebere added that his ‘madam’ did not know his whereabouts until she came to work and saw him on admission.

The Nigeria’s first female presidential candidate, Mrs. Sarah Jubril, was Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and Values. In this interview, she blamed some of government functionaries and Jonathan’s appointees for the woes the immediate past administration suffered. She also frowns at the infighting and alleged impunity in the current administration and says that implementation of ethics and values in the polity is the surest way to rescue the country from the clutches of corruption.

Her assessment of President Buhari’s fight against corruption

It is a worthy fight, a good fight on behalf of all of us. However, it is a continuous fight because even the previous administration talked about zero tolerance for corruption, that was what late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was talking about. The fight this time is coined as fighting corruption for change.

The previous administration mentioned about fighting corruption by transformation agenda. The realisation of the result is the issue. It is not only the government that has been trying to fight corruption, there are other social institutions that have embarked on such initiatives.

There are people in the public and private sectors, and the international community who expect Nigeria to raise the standard of fighting corruption.

Fighting corruption

So, Nigeria as a leading country in Africa is expected not to relent in fighting corruption. But it should be a fight on PPP level. Public and private partnership, not only the government.

The government and stakeholders should partner with the private sector, the family and the institutions. They should also not sit back and leave the whole fight against corruption to the government because they are the people that pay taxes and make the population, they are the voters.

They were the people that gave votes to the people that contested and became political leaders. That is why I keep talking about the stakeholders as the first fighters against corruption.

This issue of corruption is a whole thing that starts from the oath taking of public officials, if you read the content of the oath of office and the oath of allegiance which are supposed to be in line with the fulfilment of the implementation of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

If I refer you to Section 2, subsection 15.5. It says that states shall abolish all forms of corruption and abuse of power. In subsection 23, it is talking about the national ethics.

The 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended, chapter 2:23 says, the national ethics shall be discipline, integrity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance and patriotism. Subsection 24 talks about the duties of citizens.

The fight against corruption started when the public officers took oath of office either as appointees or elected officials taking oath as senators or governors or president.

Do you think the ministerial nominees are the best after waiting for four months?

They don’t appear to be the best but whatever happens we must have the patience and spirit of tolerance because we will not ask people to go and riot. These people: their records are there but if Nigerians want to remain complacent and sweep things under carpet, it’s left for them, the hypocrisy about corruption continues.

It is alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governments, in the past 16 years, operated in a corrupt environment. What is your take?

I think the PDP government starting from the board of trustees, the party executives, did not open their minds to understand what their slogan and manifesto stood for. The PDP government had desirable virtues, which turned out to be a moral verbalisation that did not touch their conscience and minds.

The PDP government had, I will say, the best of party slogan anywhere in the world, but unfortunately the plague was philosophical understanding of the manifesto.

The ignorance about the high sense of responsibility of claiming to be a progressive party, and only thinking of the slogan and not acting practically.

When you have a constitution and you don’t abide by the constitution and whatever your slogan is, they are the first steps of preventing corruption. By the time we take the oath of office and oath of allegiance, and after we have read it we say, ‘so help me God.’

Raising of godly politicians

The PDP government and even their predecessors had the problem of not realising that politicians in public office or civil service are supposed to ensure that the name of that God they called, they are supposed to raise godly governors. But they forget the contents of what they pronounced at the oath taking. They do not remember to obey God.

How?

If there were so much stealing, inappropriate behaviour and not practicalizing what the manifesto said, then it means people deviated from what they took oath to do, what they were supposed to be doing as a party.

It appears to be demonic plague that they will not understand what they are supposed to be doing. There was no strength of correcting, to put back on track what was going on. And those who want to do the right thing and get back to track were blackmailed, maligned and were shut up from the presidency that was supposed to steer the country in the direction.

Unfortunately, I just saw a book that says that people deceived President Goodluck Jonathan. What they are saying, believe me, those things are true. People did not have the fear of the Almighty God. There was a government by the so-called people who are supposed to fear God, progressive people that left out the fear of the Almighty God to which they took oath.

They saw Mr. President coming with the money from the South-South, there were supposed to be enough money, it was God’s grace that brought Mr. Goodluck from an obscure background to the presidency. The oil money was there but the PDP missed how to use the grace of the Almighty God upon this country. And if we choose to disobey God, to disobey the words of our mouth, of course, we will go astray. So PDP lacked discipline.

But you were part of the administration, what were your efforts to point out and correct those anomalies in the system?
