This was one of the biggest stories in retail last year – the first checkout-free store! The first Amazon Go store opened to the public in Seattle (US) recently. Well, expectant customers outside the US will have to wait a little longer. The automated store is made possible by “Just Walk Out” technology, the same used in “self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning,” stated Amazon. To start shopping, customers will scan their Amazon Go mobile app and go through a turnstile. They can shop as they normally would; the technology automatically detects items taken from or returned to the shelves, while keeping a record of the items in a virtual cart. Shoppers are charged for the items as they exit through the sensing turnstile. No queues, no checkout! Source: https://paymentchatforum.com/2018/01/25/amazon-go-goes-live-with-checkout-free-shopping/

The German Bundesliga giant, FC Schalke 04 recently struck a deal with AllyouneedFresh, an online supermarket, to sponsor the arm patch of their new football jerseys. However, the logo will be embedded with a chip which has a contactless payment function. This would allow supporters pay for food, drinks and match day services with their replica jerseys, at the home stadium, VELTINS-Arena. Instead of cash or cards, stadium stalls would scan the chip to receive payments. In addition, fans can also receive promo codes when they use the service. MasterCard has unveiled a new payment card with in-built biometric technology. The new card combines the existing chip technology with fingerprint sensors, to make in-store payments more convenient and secured. The announcement follows two successful trials conducted in South Africa, with Pick n Pay and Absa Bank (a subsidiary of Barclays Africa). “Consumers are increasingly experiencing the convenience and security of biometrics,” said Ajay Bhalla, President of Enterprise Risk and Security at MasterCard. How It Works A cardholder registers with their bank to enrol their card. Upon registration, their fingerprint will be converted into an encrypted digital template which is stored on the card. The card can then be used at any EMV card terminal globally. The biometric card works like already known chip payment cards, especially when shopping and paying in-store. The cardholder slots in their card into the retailer’s terminal, placing their finger on the embedded fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint is verified against the digital template to match the biometrics. If successful, the cardholder is authenticated and the transaction will be approved with the card never leaving the owner’s hand. Receiving payments from friends just got easier, be it after a day-out or making contributions towards a noble cause. Facebook recently launched their group payments feature on the Messenger. In 2015, Facebook launched the person-to-person payments on the Messenger, but was only possible between two users, just like the regular chats between two friends. However, the new group feature, which works like group chats, will allow members to pay one another. To make a payment, simply follow these steps: 1) Tap on the plus sign in the group conversation, it appears on the bottom left-hand corner. 2) Tap on the new payments icon which appears as a ‘$’ sign 3) Select the people you want to send money or request funds from. You’re allowed to either select everyone in the group or just a few members, as the case maybe. 4) Input the amount per person or the sum to be shared equally (you could include yourself in the computation, if need be) 5) Enter the reason for the payment – gifts, day-out, party, etc. 6) Tap on Request.
