Nairaland GeneralIndonesia Military Transport Plane Crashes In Medan 37 Dead by XFive(op): 11:20am On Jun 30, 2015
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian air force transport plane crashed Tuesday into a residential neighborhood in the country's third-largest city of Medan, killing at least 20 people.

Indonesian television broadcast images from the city of a downed Hercules C-130, crumpled vehicles and a partially destroyed building as smoke billowed and several thousand people milled nearby.

Adam Malik hospital spokeswoman Sairi M. Saragih said the hospital has received 20 bodies so far. She said two people from the neighborhood are critically injured.

The crash of the Hercules occurred not long before midday and just two minutes after the transport plane took off from Soewondo air force base.

Air force chief, Air Marshall Agus Supriatna, said the pilot told the control tower that the plane needed to turn back because of engine trouble.

"The plane crashed while it was turning right to return to the airport," Supriatna said.

There were 17 military personnel on the plane, he said.

It is the second time in 10 years that an airplane has crashed into a Medan neighborhood. In September 2005, a Mandala Airlines Boeing 737 crashed shortly after takeoff from Medan's Polonia airport, into a crowded residential community, killing 143 people including 30 on the ground.

Medan, with about 3.4 million people, is the third most populous city in Indonesia after the capital Jakarta and Surabaya.

Nairaland GeneralUS 'spied On French Presidents' - Wikileaks. Buhari Beware Of America by XFive(op): 5:06pm On Jun 24, 2015
The US National Security Agency (NSA) spied on French Presidents Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy and Francois Hollande in 2006-12, Wikileaks says. The whistleblower website cites "top secret intelligence reports and technical documents" from the NSA.

A French official said spying "between allies was unacceptable". Mr Hollande is to discuss the issue with security chiefs. The US would not confirm the veracity of the documents. In 2013 the NSA was accused of spying on German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On Tuesday, Wikileaks said it began publishing the files under the heading "Espionnage Elysee" - a reference to the French presidential palace.
It said the secret files "derive from directly targeted NSA surveillance of the communications" of the three French presidents as well as French ministers and the ambassador to the US.

One of the files, dated 2012, is about Mr Hollande discussing Greece's possible exit from the eurozone. Another one - from 2011 - alleges that Mr Sarkozy was determined to resume peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, possibly without US involvement. A file dated 2010 suggests that French officials were aware that the US was spying upon them and intended to complain about it.

According to the summary of an intercepted exchange, the French envoy to Washington and Mr Sarkozy's diplomatic adviser discussed Mr Sarkozy's plan to express his "frustration" over US unwillingness to sign a "bilateral intelligence co-operation agreement".

"The main sticking point is the US desire to continue spying on France," the intercept says. Francois Hollande, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel met at a recent G7 summit

It is unclear whether the material comes from data stolen by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the BBC's security correspondent Gordon Corera says.

The Wiki-leaks files have now been published by France's Liberation newspaper and the Mediapart investigative website.

Analysis: Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris

None of the leaks is earth-shattering. In one Jacques Chirac pushes for the nomination of Terje Roed-Larsen as UN under-secretary-general. Nicolas Sarkozy says he wants to help Pernod Ricard in a row with the US over rum. Three days after taking office, Francois Hollande calls secret meetings to discuss the Greek crisis.

Most of this could have been gleaned by diplomats at the US embassy simply doing their job - rather than by the spy-station that Liberation newspaper says operates on the embassy roof. The impression given is of an agency scooping up indiscriminate quantities of information, and for little benefit. As the French intelligence expert Francois Heisbourg put it, "They do it because they can."

None of which will allay the anger of the French government. Of course they know that spying goes on - even between friends. But the cardinal rule is not to get found out. When you do, you must expect the full force of diplomatic outrage.

Wiki-leaks carried a statement by its founder, Julian Assange, who said: "The French people have a right to know that their elected government is subject to hostile surveillance from a supposed ally.

"French readers can expect more timely and important revelations in the near future."

Wiki-leaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson told the BBC that although its revelations of NSA phone tapping against Mrs Merkel had not included any actual content, this time they were producing what he said were secret reports.

"It shows the lengths the NSA and the top officials in the US are willing to go," he said.

Nairaland GeneralCIA And Mossad Are Behind Boko Haram And ISIL, Says Sudan President by XFive(op): 8:06am On Feb 18, 2015
The President of Sudan has warned that the fight against jihadist extremism must engage militants on an ideological level, and not solely concentrate on military action against them. Omar Al-Bashir was speaking exclusively to euro-news in the week that ISIL released a video purporting to show the execution of 21 Egyptian citizens – an act that spurred Egypt into launching airstrikes.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Contains Ebola – And US Officials Want To Know More by XFive(op): 6:13am On Oct 08, 2014
The possibility that Ebola would reach and spread in Nigeria was broached with great trepidation by public health experts. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country. It is currently failing to contain an Islamist insurgency in the northeast, and prospects for controlling a fearful virus seemed bleak – particularly in Lagos, the nation’s coastal mega-city and transport hub.

But those doubts proved wrong. This week, teams of American health officials are Lagos-bound to learn from Nigeria's experience in defying expectations and stopping the outbreak before it could wreak havoc.

Since July 20, the day Nigeria’s so-called “Patient Zero” arrived in Lagos, officials have recorded a total of only 19 cases, with no new cases since Aug. 31. Last week, on the same day the US confirmed its first case of Ebola, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) proclaimed that Nigeria had stopped its outbreak.

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone, one of three West African countries hard hit by Ebola, recorded 81 new cases in the past 24 hours.

Because of a rapid public health response, effectively tracking nearly 900 contacts, it appears they have] been able to stop the outbreak in Nigeria,” CDC Director Tom Frieden said Sunday. “Though we can't give the all clear yet, it does look like the outbreak is over there. I'm confident that wherever we apply the fundamental principles of infection control in public health, we can stop Ebola."

Nigeria’s success appears to be rooted in "contact tracing" – determining every single person that Patrick Sawyer, or Patient Zero, had contact with, and then monitoring them for signs of the virus.

“Contact tracing can stop the Ebola outbreak in its tracks,” a chart distributed by the CDC declares.

Now contact tracers are at work in the US, setting out to track down as many as 100 people who may have been exposed to Thomas Duncan, who traveled from Liberia to Dallas, where he was eventually diagnosed with the virus, The New York Times reports.

It is an immense task. The Washington Post outlines how it went in Nigeria:

From that single patient came a list of 281 people, [Gavin MacGregor-Skinner, who helped with the Ebola response in Nigeria] said. Every one of those individuals had to provide health authorities twice-a-day updates about their well-being, often through methods like text-messaging. Anyone who didn't feel well or failed to respond was checked on, either through a neighborhood network or health workers.

...In the end, contact tracers — trained professionals and volunteers — conducted 18,500 face-to-face visits to assess potential symptoms, according to the CDC, and the list of contacts throughout the country grew to 894. Two months later, Nigeria ended up with a total of 20 confirmed or probable cases and eight deaths.

Ethiopia, one of two countries recognized by the World Health Organization as prepared for a possible Ebola outbreak, also has a vigorous tracing process that applies to every visitor from West Africa.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Is On The Verge Of A Break Up - Bishop Oyedepo Says by XFive(op): 12:15pm On Jul 25, 2014
Speaking recently on the spate of bombings and attacks in the country, GO of the Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo said that Nigeria is on the verge of a break up.

"I hope that we are willing to find solution to it. I would be the last person in this world to believe that government has not discovered those who are behind Boko Haram. Otherwise, we don’t have any intelligence service in our country. Are they sacred cows that cannot be brought to book? Until we cut the source of their supplies and get those who are involved, we cannot stop them. But the danger is this, and I must say it here, we are at the verge of a break up. That is the truth. It’s unfortunate. The Nigerian nation is too intelligent to claim not to have discovered those who are behind this. So, I really believe it’s all in the hands of the authorities to decide whether they want to confront the issue headlong or to keep watching it until Nigeria breaks up......All that the church can do is to pray. The church is not in power, it has no political power. And when invited, we give advice, when required or called upon. You can’t call someone and say can I advise you?" - Bishop David Oyedepo

FamilyUk-based Nigerian Tackles Church Over Marriage Breakdown by XFive(op): 10:27am On Jul 15, 2014
A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Ayadi Moniaye, has accused the Jubilee Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Manchester of turning his ex-wife against him which eventually ended their marriage.

Moniaye, who said he got married to his wife in 2000, said the marriage packed up in 2009 after years of domestic violence.

The father of three alleged that a group in the parish taught women how to get the support of the UK immigration policy by abusing their spouses.

He said, "Nigerian women in the UK were brainwashed by the group to abuse their husbands so they can claim their husbands' property and exploit the UK immigration policy to their advantage.

"I challenged the church, telling the coordinators of the programme that the Bible did not support such practice. Unknown to me, my wife was part of it."

He said his wife assaulted him on many occasions, but he did not retaliate which got her frustrated.

Moniaye said, "On one of such occasions, she injured me. She later called the police to drive me out of the house. When the police got to our home, they met the children around me, consoling me, and because of what they saw, they could not drive me out of the house.

"After series of such unprovoked attacks, my wife admitted that she was maltreating me to get me out of the house."

Moniaye showed our correspondent documents detailing his ordeals in the UK, including an alleged accusation by his wife that he was mentally unstable.

The allegation of mental instability was, however, rejected by a document dated June, 2010 and issued by one Dr R.A. Jones of Manchester Mental Health.

The document read in part, "As far as I am aware, our Team Manager, Emma Hinchcliff, has also contacted the Children and Families Social Services to outline our thoughts that there is no evidence of you suffering with a major mental illness at present."

Another document by one Mama 'Toro, an elder in the community, dated February 2011, read that Moniaye had been beaten several times by his wife.

Moniaye told our correspondent that although he had been separated from his wife, he was concerned about the negative impression such incidents were creating for Nigerians.

He said all efforts to get the matter to the attention of the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had been rebuffed by protocol officers.

"I am deeply concerned about the way women are portraying the image of this country to the outside world. And it is unfortunate that the church would be used as a platform for this. My concern is how we can correct this impression," he added.

PUNCH Metro contacted Jubilee Church, Manchester, through its official telephone lines.

An official of the church told our correspondent that the pastor would not respond to the allegation.

The official, who did not give his name, said, "I can tell you that the pastor will not want to talk about it. But I appreciate the call and will pass your message across to him."

It was learnt that police in Manchester, which investigated the case, sent a feedback to Moniaye.

The reaction reads, "Inspector O'Reilly followed up the allegations you made, and on one occasion he attended the church on Hyde Road to verify your story. He spoke to the pastor, who told him that they found you to be intractable and not only did they not confirm your account, they stated that they were concerned for you and prayed for you."

PUNCH Metro visited the national headquarters of the RCCG at Oyingbo, Lagos, where he met one of the church pastors.

He directed our correspondent to the Redemption Camp on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, saying matters of such magnitude were usually addressed there.

The Chief Legal Officer, Pastor Ayodele Oladeji, said, "Yes, a letter has been received at our office here, written by Moniaye, requesting to see Daddy G.O., and we are treating it.

"I want to assure you that even those who write to Daddy G.O. on ordinary piece of paper receive attention. We will investigate this and know what happened.

"We have all the documents which Moniaye has submitted to us. He will get a redress of his case with a little patience. We ourselves could feel his pulse with facts on the documents. But you know for now it is still one sided until we get the other side (from the UK church)."

Nairaland GeneralBruno Metsu, Former Senegal Coach, Dies Of Cancer At The Age Of 59 by XFive(op): 10:40am On Oct 15, 2013
Lille - French coach Bruno Metsu, best known for leading Senegal into the quarter-finals of the 2002 Soccer World Cup, has died from cancer at the age of 59, friends said on Tuesday.
"He died overnight at 03:30," said Herve Beddeleem, the executive director of BCM Gravelines-Dunkirk basketball club said, confirming a report in La Voix du Nord newspaper.
"I am shattered by this news. Bruno had everything to be happy - an exemplary professional career, money, a happy marriage and children and then this cancer takes him away. It's just incredible," he said.
Metsu told L'Equipe newspaper in July that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer after undergoing a medical examination to discover why he had felt ill at the end of a match.
Metsu, instantly recognisable on the touchline with his dapper suits and long hair, caused a sensation at the 2002 World Cup when his Senegal team defeated reigning champions France in the opening match.
The west Africans went on to reach the quarter-finals where they lost 1-0 to Turkey.
Metsu went on to coach several clubs and nations in the Gulf region, notably winning the Gulf Cup with the United Arab Emirates in 2007.

Nairaland GeneralAbubakar Shekau: Boko Haram Chief 'shown Alive' In Video by XFive(op): 11:40pm On Sep 25, 2013
A video has been released in Nigeria purportedly showing the leader of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram alive.

In August, the Nigerian military said it might have killed Abubakar Shekau during a shoot-out.

In the video a man believed to be Mr Shekau said the world "should know that he could not die except by the will of Allah". Other previous reports of his death later proved to be unfounded.

Boko Haram, which is fighting to create an Islamic state across Nigeria, has been blamed for many violent attacks which have killed nearly 2,000 people since 2011.

In the video, the man alleged to be Mr Shekau sits in a jungle environment surrounded by dozens of lieutenants dressed in fatigues.

He makes reference to recent events, such as an attack in Benisheik, Borno state, on 17 September in which at least 142 people are reported to have been killed.

BBC Hausa's Aliyu Tanko says the man's voice sounds like that of Shekau, and the video emerged from a source previously used by the Boko Haram leader.
Scepticism

On 19 August, the Nigerian military said intelligence suggested it might have killed Mr Shekau between 25 July and 3 August.

It claimed a video apparently showing Mr Shekau and circulated to journalists on 12 August was acted by an impostor.

But hundreds of people wrote in to the BBC's Hausa social media pages to express their scepticism at the announcement, which coincided with the Nigerian authorities' launch of a new brigade with special responsibility to tackle Boko Haram.
