That Dangote schemes against others is no news. It is commonplace knowledge. He did it to Ibeto, for instance. I for one believe the story.

Get busy folks, this topic smacks of inferiority complex and a tendency to clutch on straws by loafers sliding down the hill. The issue of incessant building collapse in Lagos, Ibadan and other parts of Nigeria, as well as bridges in Enugu, Bauchi, Benue, etc, should occupy your minds.

How Dangote Seized His Uncle’s Tin Can Island Port

Apart from the famous surname, the name Usman Dantata may mean nothing to the average Nigerian. But Alhaji Usman, 57, is the biggest benefactor of the maverick self-styled billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote. In fact, he made Aliko Dangote what he is today. Ironically, Alhaji Usman is today a cripple, downcast and barely ekes out a living in Kano, having been destroyed by the same man he helped many years ago.

LEADERSHIP Sunday authoratively learnt that Usman Dantata, who is the sixth son of Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, Aliko Dangote’s grand father (father of his mother Mariya Dantata), became fond of Aliko. This was because Aliko is the eldest grandson of Sanusi and also a favourite of the family. He had grown up with Sanusi since he was two.

Aliko got married on May 27, 1977. In December of that same year, Alhaji Sanusi took him to Lagos and handed him to Usman for guidance and for the purpose of apprenticeship. Usman had already distinguished himself in commerce.

He agreed to take Aliko and they both stayed in a house at No. 29A Probyne Street (currently owned by Alhaji Umaru Muttalab, the chairman of First Bank).

Sanusi continued to influence the career of the then young Aliko by urging Alhaji Usman to be favourably disposed toward his ward, especially by according him preferential treatment in the cement trade he (Usman) was engaged in.

Usman willingly immersed Aliko in the cement business and was giving him special concession in the trade. That was how Aliko made his first break. He was earning an average of N10,000 each day at a time a Mercedez Benz 200 car cost N7,000.

When Mehta, the general manager of the cement company, did not think Dangote should be accorded special favours, Alhaji Sanusi had to travel to Lagos to give him a dressing down. Mehta, humiliated and scared for his job, had to beg on his knees. He was made to sign an undertaking that he would never "misbehave" again. He was allowed to keep his job but warned never to tamper with Dangote’s rise again in the business. Aliko was to dump the cement business within a few months . He went on to set up his own business in New York in 1978. It was called ALCO International.

Time passed and, in August 1985, Alhaji Usman Dantata was attacked by suspected assassins. He survived the near-fatal attempt, but has since become a cripple with his whole body, from the neck, paralysed.

Fortunately for Usman, he had a thriving port business close to the government-owned Tin Can Island Port. There was also a vegetable oil-refining plant within the complex. And, in spite of his ill health, he was making an average of N50 million per month from the port. The money kept him and his family going and also defrayed his medical expenses.

But in a classical twist of fate, about 10 months ago, Aliko Dangote suddenly beamed his searchlight on Usman’s port business and promptly made plans to add it to his chain of monopolies.

Aliko contacted the then President Olusegun Obasanjo and said: "There is a man who owns a port in Tin Can Island who has not been paying ground rent."At the time, payment of ground rent was a misnomer in that area.

To be fair to Obasanjo (as strange as this may sound), he had no idea of who Dangote was referring to. But characteristically Obasanjo, without checking for details, promptly barked at his aides to get him the managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority whom Dangote had strategically brought to Abuja for the same purpose. Dangote made his GSM readily available to Obasanjo to call the MD.

Obasanjo then vehemently gave orders that the port should be confiscated. It was a bemused Usman who later got two letters on the same day asking him to pay up a ridiculous and outrageous ground rent. The other letter asked him to vacate the premises and hand it over to Dangote, who automatically became the owner of the port and the lucrative vegetable oil business.

Obasanjo’s order, of course, runs counter to due process and the spirit of the Land Use Decree of 1978.

Under Nigerian law, land could only be seized in the overriding public interest. In the case of Usman, a travesty of justice occurred when the cripple’s asset was taken and given to Dangote.

Prominent Northerners are now working on Yar’Adua to revoke the hostile takeover of the property and return it to the rightful owner, Alhaji Usman, who is also an uncle of Aliko Dangote.

But then, this is not the first time Dangote has dealt a fatal blow on the business of a family member or an associate. He recently crippled one of his brothers, Sani Dangote, who was in the cement industry. Sani’s cement company, just like that of Chief Ibeto, was ruined overnight.

Today, Sani is a mere director in Aliko’s company’s; he receives a monthly salary from his big brother.

Hostage victim's story * I caused commotion in militants' camp

BEFORE he was finally released, Monday, July 30, a member of the militant group from Bayelsa State, which kidnapped the General Service Officer (GCO) of the Niger-Benue Transport Company, Ovwian-Aladja in Delta State, Urhobo-born Mr. Daniel Tishene, threatened to shoot his leader right inside their camp. What was the reason for the near breakdown of law and order in the militants’ den? Sunday Vanguard has the answer to this and more

I saw juju in their camp: “From there, they took me to a village, I don’t know the village. The first day they took me to their camp in the bush, I saw a shrine and juju in their camp. The boys are well armed. They were saying that they wanted money from my company,” he said. “I spent a total of 17 days in their camp and the militants work in the camp on a shift duty arrangement. What I mean is that a set of say about 15 boys come to guard the camp in the night from one village, they return the next day, and another set takes over. They changed duty in the evening and the ones that took over sleep with me.

Upheaval in camp: A bloodbath was, however, averted in the camp when one of the militants threatened to shoot the leader over the continued detention of Tishene, saying that he was bringing them bad luck and there was no reason for him to continue to be with them in the camp. Sunday Vanguard learnt that after one week of Tishene’s detention, most of the militants became unhappy that no money had come in, and instead of their ransom being paid, they were getting calls everyday to release him

Rather than tackle the menace of armed robbers in the state which had led to the killing and maiming of innocent Lagosians, including policemen, the rank and file of the Lagos State Police command appear contented with pursuing and arresting ladies dressed in skimpy clothes and commercial sex workers along the streets of Lagos. Just yesterday, three of its men were killed at a branch of a new generation bank by armed robbers who stormed the bank in a commando like operation in broad daylight.

In the past three weeks, at least five policemen have been killed by men of the underworld in different operations in the state.

“But despite all these, the police hierarchy appear to be more concerned about harassing, embarrassing, intimidating ladies dressed in skimpy clothes and arresting ladies suspected to be prostitutes,” said a student of Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo, who was arraigned before an Ikeja magistrate’s court for prostitution, while speaking with P.M.News.

University graduate, 25 others, freed from prison
By Kayode Ketefe
Published: Friday, 3 Aug 2007
A Nigerian with a doctorate in Petroleum Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, USA, Dr. Muhammed Mamadou, was among the 26 inmates of the Ikoyi Prison set free by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Adetula Alabi, on Thursday.

The freed inmates had been detained for a period ranging from three to 12 years.

Mamadou, who said his wife and children were in Canada, had been detained for eight years without trial over alleged offence of obtaining money by false pretence.

Some of the freed inmates were also alleged to be HIV positive while one was said to have been ”certified mad.”

The release of the inmates was facilitated by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, whose Chairman, Mr. Olorogun Gbagi, led officers of the council to the prison.

The Chief Judge, who led a number of the officials of the Lagos State Judiciary, first received the Legal Council team at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, before the visit to the prison.

Seven of the freed inmates are under age persons who had been convicted and sentenced with options of fine. They were however serving prison terms because they could not pay the fines even though some of the fines were as low as N10,000.

The Legal Aid Council paid all the fines imposed on the seven persons.

Eighteen of the freed inmates were released on the grounds that they had spent more time in prison than they would have spent even if they had been convicted and sentenced for the offences for which they were arrested.

One of them, Sola Okoro, was released on the grounds that the circumstances under which he was arrested and detained ”were manifestly unjust.”

Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly has come under severe criticism over his statement that Umaru Yar’Adua is God appointed president for Nigeria.

Reacting to the statement, Lagos cleric, Prophet Anthony Nwoko, said it was too early to dress President Yar’Adua in messianic robe.

Nwoko said: "Pastor Bakare did not speak the mind of God. He is a full time politician. He is not in Spirit. He doesn’t even know what God is talking about concerning the state of the nation."

According to the cleric, "the glory of Nigeria is from the South East, Abia State to be precise. Bakare is aware of it but he has turned back to work against God by proclaiming Yar’Adua the appointed leader of Nigeria. God does not change His word but today Bakare is changing His words.

The Holy Spirit is angry with him over his utterances. He is backing Yar’Adua, calling him a good man under two months of his administration."
Nwoko also lambasted his fiery colleague for referring to some former governors as thieves when he himself is not a saint.

"The Bible says judgement will start from the house of God. Bakare has been collecting money from worshippers for years. Where does he give Jesus Christ the money?," he queried.
To buttress his position, Nwoko recalled that Arch-Bishop John Obiokeke of God’s Pentecostal Mission (GPM) in his prediction at the beginning of the year stated that an Igboman is destined to sit on the throne.

Police alert on home-made bombs in Rivers
• Monday, Jul 30, 2007
The Rivers State Police Command has alerted the public on the invention of high explosive home-made bombs being used by militants and hoodlums to terrorise their targets and the state.

This followed the recovery of seven live home-made bombs, an improvised explosive device made from empty cans of drinks, during an attack by militants at a Shell oil rig II in Soku in Akuku – Toru Local Government Area of the state.

During the attack, five expatriate workers at the rig were taken hostage, one mobile policeman was killed and several shells of expended 7.62 mm AK 47 rifle ammunitions were also recovered at the scene of the incident.

Briefing newsmen at the police Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, the Head of the Police Anti-Bomb Squad, Henry Idiodi said examination of the home-made bombs recovered from the scene showed that high explosives were repackaged into empty cans of Power Horse and Red Bull energy drinks, which they use in damaging any strong object during operations.

Mr Idiodi who displayed the explosives further said the home-made hand bombs did not undergo factory process as they illegallyobtained the explosives and assembled them in cans.

He explained that the centre body of the cans has an opening into which plain detonator duely encapsulated with safety fuse was firmly inserted into the high explosives.

Such explosive, he said, is dangerous and called on the public to be alert and report such activities to the police for timely intervention.

Commissioner escapes assassination in Diobu
By Chimex Ndubuisi

The newly appointed commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources in Rivers State, Hon. Billy Braide Eldred narrowly escaped assassination. However, two of his relatives were shot dead.
The attackers who stormed the residence of the newly appointed Commissioner in Ojike Street, located in one of the volatile zones of Port Harcourt may be protesting non-permission and for marching ground before the commissioner started celebrating his appointment.
Although details of the mission of the attackers were sketchy as at press time, unconfirmed sources said the Commissioner's offence may not be unconnected with non-clearance from the militants in charge of Diobu zone before embarking on the celebration.
Sources within the Diobu neighbourhood said the attackers arrived the residence of Billy Braide Eldered about 5 hours after he was sworn-in by Governor Celestine Omehia in Government House.
We learnt that prior to the arrival of the attackers, the commissioner's visitors were at his residence, having a good time, dining, wining and dancing. But suddenly guns started blaring in different directions of his home, causing his guests and others to scamper for safety. Sources said the commissioner who was busy at his inner house when the attackers started shooting at the front of his house, quickly escaped through the back door.
The gunshots, sources said hit two persons, who died almost immediately. As at press time, the identity of the deceased persons was still unknown, while their bodies were allegedly deposited in an unidentified morgue.
Meanwhile, anxiety is reported to be at its peak in Mile 1, Port Harcourt, following the unfortunate incident. This last incident, we were authoritatively informed is coming barely 7 days after a major shooting took place in Diobu, where more than 6 persons were allegedly killed by the hoodlums.
People in the zone, sources said, are beginning to avoid the roads the moment it gets to 9.00pm because of the activities of hoodlums.

£2.09m, assets also confiscated

ICPC to prosecute 26 former Govs
Court sets N400m bail hurdle for Dariye
LAGOS — SIX companies belonging to former Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, were yesterday confiscated and ordered to be wound-up by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, while their assets running into billions of naira were ordered sold and the proceeds paid into the state government's account.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of £2,093,594 (or N546,428,161) cash and properties owned by the companies in Nigeria and outside the country.

Meanwhile, Ijaw leaders have concluded plan to fly him to Dubai today for the continuation of his medical treatment, while the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) vowed yesterday to probe civil servants for aiding state governors to loot public funds.

The Alamieyeseigha's companies are Solomon & Peters Ltd, Santolina Investment Corporation, Pesal Nigeria Ltd, Kpedefa Nigeria Ltd, Jetty Properties Ltd and Herbage Global Services Ltd.

Properties ordered forfeited by the court include Chelsea Hotel, Abuja; property at Plot 26, Dalhatu Close, Abacha Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos; property at No 20, Obagi Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt; property at No 1, Community Road, Off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos; property at 247, Water Gardens, London, W2 2DG, London; property at 14, Mapesbury Road, London, NW2 4JB; property at Flat 202, Jubilee Heights, Shootuphill, London, NW2 3UQ; property at 68-70 Regent Park, London, property at 4A Ilu Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos; property at 10, Oguda Close, Maitama, Abuja and property at 18, Mississippi Street, Maitama, Abuja.

Cash ordered forfeited is £100,000; £70,000; £50,000; £122,175; £70,000; £198,814,88; £120,000; £100,000; £100,000; £250,000; £99,985; £81,985; £19,985; £136,157; £275,027 and £299,465.61.

Chief Alamieyeseigha himself was convicted last Thursday by the High Court for corruption. He got two years each on a three-count charge which was to run concurrently and with effect from the day of his arrest. He has since been released having spent over two years in EFCC detention.

When the matter came up for hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacob, told the court that a further amended charge had been filed against the accused persons, and that it should be read for the plea of the companies to be taken.

After the 25-count charge was read, Jacob said: “Pursuant to section 468 of the Criminal Procedure Act, the accused persons have in writing pleaded guilty to the charge and the court can act on the written plea pursuant to section 218 of CPA and by section 218 of the CPA, we are to demonstrate that an offence had been committed.

“I will urge the court to look at the statements in our proof of evidence, Volume I. The court will see from this how contractors funded the accounts of those companies through contract kickbacks and outright withdrawal from the Bayelsa State government accounts, mostly in Bond Bank. Page 44 to 50 of the proof of evidence is the statement by the officials of the bank, stating how the various sums were remitted to accounts abroad and how monies were remitted to acquire properties in the United Kingdom.

“Also at pages 145 to 185 of the same proof of evidence is the statement of the agents, which are Olatunde Ayeni and Aliyu Abubakar, who happened to be contractors to Bayalsa State government and how they remitted money abroad and how properties were acquired in the country. The proof of evidence is a proof of how the crimes were committed”, he contended, praying the court to enter a guilty verdict against the accused persons.”

Counsel to the companies, Chief Mike Ozekhome, did not object. Justice Muhammad Shuiabu, in his judgement said, “an amended 25-count charge of concealing the nature of various proceeds of crime was filed against the accused persons and they have entered a guilty plea. Upon careful and meticulous consideration of the charge and the proof of evidence, this court is satisfied that the accused person intended to admit to all the charges against them. The prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. I consequently find the accused persons guilty as charged”.

After their conviction, counsel to the companies, Chief Ozekhome asked the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convicts, contending that they were first time offenders and that the companies had since the case started not been functional, while all their employees had been forced out of job. He prayed the court to give the company a second chance.

But the prosecution asked the court to order the forfeiture of the affected properties and cash which were acquired with the proceeds of crime. He contended that under the EFCC Act, the companies were to be wound-up and their assets sold and proceeds paid into the Bayelsa State government account.

The court consequently ordered the forfeiture of the assets and cash listed in the schedule attached to the charge.

The charge against the companies read:

Ijaw leaders to fly Alams to Dubai for treatment

However, Ijaw leaders have concluded plans to fly Chief Alamieyeseigha back to Dubai, United Arab Emirates today to conclude his treatment which was cut short following his deportation to Nigeria allegedly orchestrated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Yesterday, religious bodies from far and near offered prayers at Amassoma, Alamieyeseigha’s country home, as they anxiously awaited his return including his aged parents.

The decision to fly the former governor back to Dubai today to continue with his treatment was confirmed to Vanguard in a telephone interview by his cousin and governorship candidate of the Action Congress (AC) in Bayelsa State in the last general election, Prince Ebitimi Amgbare, who said he was with the ailing former governor.

Prince Amgbare who blamed Alamieyeseigha’ poor health for his delayed return to Yenagoa where thousands of Bayelsans are waiting to receive him explained that since his release, friends and supporters including relatives have repeatedly besieged his Lagos residence to see him in spite of doctors’ report that he needed rest.

The former governor, he noted, “is not fit to attend to large number of visitors for now,” adding that the return trip is at the instance of the Ijaw leaders to enable their son recuperate fully before returning to Bayelsa where thousands of his supporters are waiting to receive him.

Also, the Co-coordinator, Ijaw Monitoring Group, Mr. Joseph Evah, said: “Yes, we want him to fully recover from the trauma he passed through in the hands of the EFCC. You know there are some metal objects still in his body that the doctors at Dubai did not remove.”

Evah said the former governor had multiple operations while he was at the Dubai hospital, noting: “He was responding to treatment before he was bundled back by the EFCC and it is only natural that he is taken back there to complete the treatment.”

As Nigeria's Landscape Diminishes From Two Fronts.

Climate change: 13m Nigerians endangered

Thirteen million Nigerians are currently at risk due to climate change vulnerability, a report on climate has shown.

A report on Nigeria under UN Framework Convention on Climate Change says that those at risk would have to relocate.

The report indicates that the inhabitants of the nation’s coastal areas and communities on desertification zone would be at serious risk. The report adds that the relocation would arise from floods and erosion at the coastal areas.

``Most of the Sudan and the savannah regions, which are already undergoing severe droughts and desertification, would be affected.

"Already about 15 per cent of the Niger Delta would be lost with no sea level rise, however, with sea level rise of 0.5mm, about 35 per cent of the Delta would be lost.

"About 15 per cent of the country’s population is presently affected by climatic variations and sea level changes, ‘’ the report says. The report says that with the projected climate change and sea level rise of about 0.5 mm, likely those to be relocated, if with no mitigation plan, would increase to 27 million.

"If sea level should rise by about 1.0mm with the projected climate change, the people to be relocated would be more than 48 million,’’ the report indicates.

It says that the country would witness a massive refugee situation if proper mitigation strategy was not put in place.

The report which is a fundamental requirement from all parties to the Convention is meant to draw attention to the risk.

It further says that socio-economic, ecological and socio-cultural values at risk would be high in the country.

That the illiterate thug Adams and Fashehun were released in a politically-motivated manner influenced by the greatest thief of all times and the ugliest man to walk planet earth (Obasanjo) is not in doubt. That Dokubo was released politically too, by VP Good luck's influence is not in doubt. So, b'cos an Igbo was not the president and is not now the VP means an Igbo who is alleged to have committed similar offfence as these people will be left out of the political solution? . What blatant double-justice (If in doubt, ask Barrister Keyamo-a non-Igbo).

And, anyone who supports this deserves a heap of curse indeed. Cursed be you all who support injustice.

I have no doubt that Mamajama is a thug of the hue of Adedibu and Adams. Idiot.

You guys will be put to shame. It is a matter of time and the guy will be released. But Yoruba double-speak will forever remain palpable. Woe betide you and your warped generation of hypocrites and leeches. You can only be vindicated if the other guys released did not commit similar offence as Uwazuruike. Pray how is Uwazuruikes' case different than Dokubo's, Adams' and Fashehun's case?

Thank you very much for your response. A friend of mine got a wow offer for an MSc degree abroad and could not wait to serve in 2003. During the VISA process then, he never was asked for the NYSC cert. I should think NYSC is national and not required by foreign universities. He is almost rounding off a PhD program and is wondering if to return to Naija. You mean he has to first serve before he can get a job, especially as he has just passed the age of 30?

Isn't there a Sarkin Hausa in Yorubaland and Igboland? Is'nt there a Yoruba community head in PH (I know him personally) and in Onitsha, Aba etc? Why are some people so ignorant and plainly mischievious? Obasanjo had to personally stop the Oba of Yoruba in Abuja shortly before he left Aso Rock, an action which generated bad blood amongst the Yoruba. Na wa for WAEC oh!
BusinessDangote In Competition Trouble As Ibeto Cement Reopens by Xris74(op): 5:19pm On Jul 29, 2007
Have you heard that Yaradua has ordered the re-opening of the multi-billion Ibeto cement factory? Ibeto, an Nnewi-born business mogul has also promised to break Dangote monopoly pretty soon. Did you also hear that Ibeto Cement factory was shut down by Obj based on Dangote's complain following his inability to compete with the former? Ibeto has also promised to work towards completing a cement manufacturing factory being built in Ebonyi state.

Phd Degree (obtained Outside Nigeria) And NYSC

With a PhD degree, do you need an NYSC certificate to:

1. work in the federal/state service?
2. Work in the private sector?

Thanks for your candid response.
