Israel Adesanya has defeated Robert Whittaker to retain his middleweight title at UFC 271 in Houston, Texas. The reigning UFC middleweight champion battled Whittaker over five rounds to ultimately win a unanimous decision in his fourth consecutive title defense in front of 6,000 fans packed into the Toyota Center The final scorecards read 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47 with Adesanya moving to 22-1 in his career with the victory. “I knew he was going to bring everything cause last time I took everything away from him,” Adesanya said after his latest win. “So he had nothing to lose. Like I said, I’m the champ, you want it, come get it.” Judges Jacob Montalvo and Doug Crosby had Adesanya winning the first three rounds and Whittaker taking the final two. Judge Mike Beltran had Adesanya winning all but the second round, which he gave to Whittaker. Adesanya outlanded Whittaker 79-59 in significant strikes, according to UFC Stats. But Whittaker landed more significant strikes to the head, 38-36, with Adesanya outlanding Whittaker in strikes to the legs, 29-13. Whittaker landed four takedowns, which matched Marvin Vettori for the most by any opposing fighter against Adesanya in the UFC, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Coming in, ESPN had Adesanya ranked No. 2 and Whittaker ranked No. 9 on its MMA pound-for-pound rankings. At middleweight, Adesanya was No. 1 and Whittaker No. 2. After being arrested for suspected rape and Grievous Bodily Harm, Sunday evening in police custody, and a number of his Manchester United teammates have unfollowed him on social media. Whilst this will come as little concern for Greenwood and those who have been impacted by the behaviours that he has been accused of, it does display the immediate reaction of those who used to play alongside him. Manchester United moved to suspend the 20-year-old upon the emergence of the allegations on Sunday morning, making clear that he would not return to training or play matches until further notice. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to unfollow Greenwood on social media following the events, whilst Jesse Lingard, David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Scott McTominay all followed suit on Instagram. The club's own official social media pages still continue to follow the academy graduate, although the legal process is ongoing and that is subject to change. Former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has been linked with the vacant coaching job of Ghana’s senior national team ahead of World Cup playoffs with Nigeria. The 68-year-old German coach has been out of a job since he parted ways with the Nigeria Football Federation last December before the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon. Gernot is currently one of the favourites to replace Milovan Rajevac, who was recently sacked by the Ghana Football Association following the Black Stars suffered a disastrous outing at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Ghana crashed out of the tournament in the group stage after they finished bottom of Group F with just one point. Rohr, who qualified the Eagles for the AFCON and the World Cup play-offs, says he is ready to return to management but hasn't made a decision yet on which offer to consider. The Franco-German told PUNCH Sports Extra: “I haven’t taken any decision yet at the moment but I will consider all the proposals I have received.” “I will consider a new job if it is in the right direction.” When asked if Ghana were among the proposals he was studying he replied, “I won’t comment on that.” A close source to Rohr had revealed that he is very much open to leading Ghana’s national team ahead of the World Cup playoffs in March. “Rohr is very much open to the Ghana job,” the source told ghanaweb.com. “Ghana football has great potential and his experience of the African game will help him steer the team in the right direction. “His knowledge of African football is deep especially with West African teams. Besides Nigeria, he also handled Burkina Faso and Niger. Rohr also had a stint with Gabon in 2017. He has the quality to handle the Black Stars. Ghana and Nigeria will battle for a slot at the Qatar 2022 World Cup in March.
