O.G Money Men! |
@Malali I can see the reasonable perspective from your point of view, but it seems many citizens of this country are not ready for this conversation. You can see someone already devised enthnic baiting on this thread, and some other trying to exonerate. I have nothing against these people they are entitled to their own opinion. However, I think you shouldn't have picked on this personality in isolation. You could have made it a major reference, without making it all about her. This issue is a common factor amongst the financial elite all over the country. The real meat of the matter is that most of these privileged few, who are worth billions of USD are not as enterprising in commensuration to their wealth, and that's not being disrespectful to them. They most often make their wealth from rent seeking and royalties from Oil wells. They don't create enough jobs to help the average citizen. They usually employ people in the service industry, who serve as their bean counter. For instance, I doubt if her Oil company which according to you generates averagely ±2.2 billion USD employs more than a thousand nigerian citizens. Some people will argue that they are capitalist, and that's the game. However, they didn't build their companies, which only usually serve as financial funnels to channel our collective natural resources into private pockets, through highly creative and innovative means like the great companies of the Western world e.g Coca-Cola, Ford Motors, Walmart, Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, etc. They only cornered our natural resources through cronyism and patronage. Imagine if this woman invest like say 10 million USD in each of the states in the Southwest region and even beyond, maybe in mechanized Agriculture, Look at what that could do for the region in terms of economic vibrancy. Let say many others like her too, do such and invest in their region, I think the country would be in better condition. They could help build major and supporting infrastructures, like inner street roads, renovation of primary and high schools on a large scale to make them conducive for learning purpose, standard health care facilities, it doesn't have to be all on government or having to become a politician before doing all these. Wealthy people do it in many advanced countries. For instance, cornelius vanderbilt, the great American business magnate, was said to have built several railroads in New England and New York area. However, Our people mostly chose to domicile their wealth in a small pocket of space within the country i.e Victoria Island, Eko Atlantic, banana Island, Abuja and off-shore i.e Western world and Dubai. Now the point I'm trying to make is that all our wealthy citizens who got their huge financial resources through our collective natural resources as a nation i.e Oil, should do better in giving back. You could take a look at this thread to have a wider perspective on this matter. https://www.nairaland.com/7804464/what-benefit-nigerian-billionaires#125139378 |
At the end of it all, this means an Unbreachable Security is just a facade. They will tell someone, do this certification, do that one. Now, their corperate enterprise system has been broken into through unauthorized means. |

It's an interesting take from the OP. However it's not always easy to criticise successful people, no matter how constructive it might appear; and most of the people in this category would be classed as Ultra successful. The argument then becomes if you know better then you should be doing better than them, in order to implement your ideas. Take Nigeria for example, a significant number of our most prominent billionaires made their core wealth from the oil sector, particularly rent seeking and royalties from oil wells. They never diversified into other real sectors like manufacturing on a large scale, modern mechanised agriculture etc. That means a lot of them haven't even used the wealth gained to exponentially take the country's economy to a higher level. Assuming that has been the case, there would be more jobs with decent wages for people to be gainfully employed, more money in circulation; thereby creating a more vibrant economy. This alone would have done a lot to empower the common people. However, it seems like they usually only care about managing their financial portfolios, buying shares in companies like Apple, Microsoft etc, stacking monies in shell companies in countries that serve as tax haven. So, is it people that do all these and more in order to consolidate their wealth, without domiciling and reinvesting most the wealth gained from oil rentage and services back into the country, that would now think of Philanthropy. IMHO, I think to most of them that is an afterthought! |

This is a very thoughtful piece. It really calls for a collective deep reflection, and proactive steps must be taken in order to curtail these existential challenges in the society. On a norm, technology when properly deployed should lead to a more progressive civilization. |
