Brazilian football legend Pele has warned Neymar that his on and off-field antics, including his propensity to go down, are hurting his bid to reach greatness in world football.

Neymar has long been compared to his compatriot; the pair both grew up in the famed youth system of Santos, where each achieved fantastic success.

Pele lifted the Brazilian title six times and also triumphed in the Copa Libertadores on two occasions in 1962 and 1963, Santos' last win in the competition until a Neymar-inspired team prevailed over Penarol in 2011.

The three-time World Cup winner has long tipped Neymar to become the world's best player, but he believes he must focus on his game and cut out some of the theatrics.

"I always said that Neymar will become a great player," the veteran explained in an interview with France's Canal+.

"But what has happened in recent years? He began to want to appear in another way, not by scoring goals but by making gestures, simulating fouls, complicating the referees' lives. That's why his image became negative.

The World Cup winner sat on the bench throughout Sunday's painful reverse, which sees United fall further behind the top four.

Jose Mourinho revealed he did not consider starting Paul Pogba in Manchester United's loss to Liverpool as he deflected criticism of Romelu Lukaku's anonymous display.

Asked whether the £89million midfielder was considered for a place in the starting XI, Mourinho said: "No."

Pressed as to why, he added: "Because I am happy with [Nemanja] Matic, Lingard and [Ander] Herrera."

Mourinho was also satisfied with Lukaku despite the striker managing no shots and tallying only 20 touches.

The misfiring Belgium international boats just six goals in his 22 club appearances this season.

"I think he didn't have a bad game at all. I think he fought hard, he had good movement, he set up the goal," the United boss said.

"He gave more problems today than last season when he came for the 0-0 draw. He was lively, he had movement and good interaction.

"Sometimes his first touch is not the best and he loses lots of balls, but today that didn't happen.

"He had some good links and fought hard. He's improving, he played positively in the last game against Fulham and today was a very difficult match to play. I think he was positive."

Wayne and Coleen Rooney were Donald Trump’s guests of honour at the White House Christmas party on Sunday.

Despite countless American sports stars refusing to step foot in the President’s official home while he is in office, the footballer, who now plays for Washington’s DC United, happily accepted the invitation.

The couple were joined at the bash by their four sons, Kai, nine, Klay, five, Kit, two and nine-month-old Cass, at the bash.

According to sources the Rooney’s were given a guided tour of the Trump’s private quarters while inside.

The invite is understood to have been made due to Trump’s football-mad son, Barron.

The 12-year-old previously played for DC United’s youth teams and has posed with some of the team’s stars at a White House Easter party last year.

Barron is said to excel at playing football at his private school and is often seen in his Arsenal strip practising on the lawn near the Oval Office.

A source said: “Barron is mad on football. Whenever he gets the chance, he is kicking a ball about.

“He loves DC United and Wayne is known to be one of his favourite players ever since he joined the club.”

The Egypt international produced yet another moment of brilliance to seal victory over Napoli and a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

At some point the superlatives will run out, surely?

Liverpool’s Champions League hopes are still alive, and as so often they have Mohamed Salah to thank.

On the big stage, with the stakes high, the Egyptian delivered. Again.

His first-half goal gave Jurgen Klopp’s side what they wanted, what they needed. Their 1-0 win means it is the Reds who join Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16, while Napoli must contemplate a New Year spent in the Europa League.

Tough on the Italians, but few inside Anfield will care. Finalists last season, Liverpool will hope something special is brewing once more. What is it about this competition and the men in red?

What is it about this competition and Salah, too? He’s been on Merseyside less than 18 months and he has 14 Champions League goals. Only Steven Gerrard, in the club’s history, has more.

After his hat-trick at the weekend, only one goal was needed this time.

Some goal, mind.

There didn’t seem a huge deal of danger when James Milner rolled a ball into his feet, 11 minutes before half time.

But great players have the ability to make a lot out of very little, and Salah did just that. First he used his strength to shrug aside Mario Rui and move into the area, then he used his skill to dance past Kalidou Koulibaly, one of the world’s best defenders, onto his right foot.

The angle was tight, but as David Ospina dived for a ball across goal, Salah slipped it between the goalkeeper’s legs and into the net. No celebration, but as long as he’s scoring there can be no issue.

That’s 13 for the campaign now. For the fourth season in a row, Salah is a one-season wonder. Where will his remarkable exploits end?

At Anfield it is 35 in his last 38 appearances. In 2018, he has 34 in all competitions. Not since Robbie Fowler, who scored 37 in 1996, has a player managed more in a calendar year for Liverpool. He’s the worst one-season wonder in the world, this lad.

He was not the sole hero by any means. Liverpool would be out were it not for the brilliance of Alisson Becker, whose sprawling save from Arkadiusz Milik in stoppage time was worth every penny of the £65 million paid to Roma in the summer.

Elsewhere, there were huge contributions all over the field. Liverpool ran until they dropped, literally in James Milner’s case, and could well have wrapped the game up long before they did, with Sadio Mane particularly wasteful in front of goal. Thankfully for Klopp, his team’s profligacy did not come back to bite them.

“Create an atmosphere with the way you play,” Klopp had told his players on Monday. They did that, producing a performance which was controlled in the first half, aggressive in the second.

There were signs of the old Liverpool in the way the home side pressed and harried after the break, but signs of the new Reds in the manner in which they held out. They have struggled on the road in Europe this season, but they are some side. Their spine is strong, they have big players in big positions, and in Salah they have one of the continent’s finest match-winners. They’ll fancy their chances of another big run after Christmas.

The last time Napoli were here they were undone by Steven Gerrard, whose one-man show settled a rather less intense Europa League group game. There was no one-man show this time, just a team performance decorated by one magical goal and one magnificent save. Liverpool stared into the abyss and faced their fears. Top of the Premier League, they were not ready to say goodbye to the Champions League just yet.

“Klopp lift us up where we belong,” read the banner on the Kop. He is, bit by bit. The manager got it right tonight, but it is his players who deserve the bulk of the credit. They got themselves into this situation; here, they dug themselves out.

Who knows where this journey will end? Maybe in Madrid in May?

The Portuguese boss and French midfielder's bitter feud was reignited in the aftermath of United's 2-2 draw at Southampton on Saturday night.

Pogba was slated by Mourinho in the away dressing room at St Mary's for being reckless in possession and, it was reported over the weekend, labelled 'a virus' by his boss.

Now, according to The Sun, Pogba has hit back against his manager and warned Mourinho to stop highlighting him as the core of United's problems.

Sportsmail understands Mourinho's comments were more general in his criticism as he raged against a fall in standards and discipline from his players, saying he, as manager, wasn't the only one to blame for recent performances.

Pogba has been notably poor in recent games amid concerns from staff that he has once again set his sights on leaving Old Trafford. He is not alone with other teammates also considering their futures.

He was understood to be frustrated further on Saturday by how United were forced to set up in midfield with Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic behind in a makeshift three man defence.

Pogba himself was restored to United's starting line-up amid an injury crisis having been dropped for the Champions League win over Young Boys last week.

United fought back from 2-0 down to claim a draw against Southampton but they are already eight points off the Champions League places.

United are back in Premier League action on Wednesday night against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Mourinho is facing more reshuffling ahead of the clash. Striker Marcus Rashford is nursing an ankle injury while Chris Smalling has a hairline fracture in his foot.

At his Tuesday press conference, Mourinho even refused to give away updates on which players were injured to United's in-house TV station as he tries to protect his team selection.

Alexis Sanchez isn’t suited to Manchester United’s style of play, according to former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn.

Chile international Sanchez joined United from the Gunners in a swap deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but has scored just four goals in 11 months for his new side and has failed to recapture the form he produced during his three and a half years at the Emirates.

It has been widely reported that the former Barcelona and Udinese star is desperate to bring an end to his Old Trafford nightmare, having been ostracised amongst his team-mates and no longer assured of a place in manager Jose Mourinho’s team.

Speaking exclusively to betting aggregator Bookmakers.tv, former full-back Winterburn believes that Sanchez isn’t a fit in Mourinho’s struggling side.

“I didn’t think Alexis Sanchez's style of play would suit United, he’s a free spirit and you have to know how to deal with him,” he said. "He’s got undoubted ability, but I wasn’t quite sure the way he plays would fit in to the Mourinho way.

“I look back at Sanchez for Arsenal, and there’s something not quite right with him at United, and it will be interesting to see how the situation will develop.

“It will be interesting if he stays and plays a major part for the club or whether he looks for a new challenge, but he’s not hit the level of performance from his time at Arsenal.”

Arsenal look set to lose another of their established performers in the summer, with Aaron Ramsey’s contract set to expire and no movement having happened on a new deal. Bayern Munich looks likely to be the Welshman’s destination.

“It’s looking more and more likely Aaron Ramsey will be a free agent, so he’ll be linked with a whole host of clubs,” said Winterburn. “He’ll have a major decision to make and there’ll be five or six teams interested.

“He’ll be thinking about what’s the right move for him. It doesn’t surprise me the top teams are looking at him. You talk about the freedom of contracts, which frustrates supporters, but it will happen more and more with players.”

Arsenal face United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with the visitors sitting eight points ahead of their hosts following Saturday’s 4-2 win over Tottenham, while United were held to a 2-2 draw at Southampton.

“A lot of people would say it’s a good time to go to Old Trafford,” Winterburn added. “They are struggling to produce top level performances at home, and when you struggle, players will start to feel anxiety and if you haven’t scored early it transmits into the crowd and frustration from the supporters. If Arsenal take the lead, they could ask serious questions of Man United.”

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has responded to the racial abuse he suffered during Arsenal's 4-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday.
The Football Association are set to investigate the controversial flashpoint, this morning they will speak to representatives from both clubs, while images and CCTV footage are likely to prove crucial.

However, the FA’s jurisdiction resides over the clubs and not the individual in question.

Tottenham moved quickly to condemn the supporter by issuing a statement.

A Tottenham fan had been arrested for the incident.

Metropolitan Police were investigating on Sunday night whether the incident was racially aggravated; the original arrest made for the throwing the missile.

Yet images of Aubameyang celebrating in front of Tottenham fans with a banana skin at his feet was a throwback to the darker days of English football.
After celebrating scoring the opening goal in front of Spurs supporters, a banana skin was thrown in front of the striker by the away section at the Emirates Stadium.

Responding on Instagram, the Arsenal striker posted the image of him in front of the skin with the hashtag 'Whysmandoingthis?'

The move comes following a Spurs investigation that has seen one supporter given an indefinite ban from attending games.

‘Behaviour such as this is completely unacceptable and the supporter in question will be issued with a ban,’ said a Tottenham spokesman.

In total, seven arrests were made by Metropolitan Police officers - two in connection with smoke bombs hurled into the Tottenham end by Arsenal fans. The remaining four were for public order offences.

It is understood the arrests for the banana skin and the smoke bombs were made after stewards identified the culprits. The CCTV footage was used to confirm their identities.

BREAKING: UEFA confirm VAR will be used in THIS season's Champions League knockout stages.

UEFA’s Executive Committee has confirmed that video assistant referees (VAR) will be implemented in the Champions League this season.

It was announced on Monday that VAR would be used from the last 16 onwards, despite the technology not being used throughout the group stages.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had previously stated the technology would be introduced next season, but pressure from clubs has brought this date forward.

The governing body of European football has also confirmed that VAR will be used in Europa League as of the last-32 stage this season, as well as next year’s Nations League Finals and European Under-21 Championship.

The technology has been introduced across a number of top European Leagues including Serie A, while it was used at the 2018 World Cup.

Mark Hughes has been sacked by Southampton after just one win in their opening 14 games of the Premier League season.

The Saints have slipped into the relegation zone and dropped a two-goal lead against Manchester United on Saturday.

Assistant first team manager Mark Bowen and assistant first team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left.

Kelvin Davis will take charge of Wednesday's game against Tottenham.

Jose Mourinho is under mounting pressure again as he begins to show the strain of Manchester United’s faltering season.
