Nigeria's Minister of Interior Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola is no doubt a grass root politician, Islamic scholar and a self styled comrade. He was one of Bola Tinubu‘s greatest allies, right hand man and prime enforcer. Until the centre could not old between the duo in recent months.

Aregbesola's decades support and political yeoman jobs for Bola Ahmed Tinubu earned him works and infrastructure commissioner uninterruptedly for eight years (1999 to 2007) in Lagos State, apex political leadership in the Alimosho federal constituency of Lagos State and a two term governorship of Osun State, all on the graces, contacts and financial might of Tinubu.

After his stint as Governor he attempted to come to Lagos State to take up Lagos West Senatorial seat. He was casually resisted by the then Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and other Lagosians who rightly counselled Tinubu that a former Governor from another State should not come and take such an important position to the detriment of indigenes and politicians domiciled in the State. Tinubu's spouse Senator Remi Tinubu openly counselled Aregbesola on his "Thank You" tour to Tinubu's Lagos residence, after his gubernatorial tenure to stay put in Osun and grow the party, in other words he is a distraction in Lagos politics.

This action by Ambode and other well meaning inner caucus of Tinubu drew the ire of Aregbesola who vowed to stop Ambode’s second term bid. He conscripted the late Senator Bayo Oshinowo (Pepper), Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, (Lagos State Speaker), Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, (Yayi), Tayo Ayinde (Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu Chief of Staff), Cardinal James Odumbaku, (Baba Eto) from his political enclave, the Mandate Group and a host of others to convince a gullible Tinubu that Ambode was trying to supplant Asiwaju as the new numero uno in Lagos politics.

They succeeded and Tinubu decided to drop Ambode in favour of a grateful Sanwoolu.

However in a twist and turn of events, Aregbesola began to work with the late Oshinowo and his other co travellers on how to supplant Tinubu as leader in Lagos politics.

Immediately Tinubu sensed this Aregbesola led power stripping gang up, he dissolved the Mandate Group alongside other groups in Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC), he derobed Alhaji Abdullahi Ayinde Enilolobo who Aregbesola in the meeting made Mandate Group new State Chairman, he severed all ties with garrulous Oshinowo which accelerated his demise and also cut off Aregbesola who had also begun to nurse presidential ambitions. He saw through Oshinowo's leakages of Lagos State House of Assembly vouchers to implicate Speaker Obasa and by extension himself.

Tinubu slowly but steadily has begun to squeeze out and whittle down Aregbesola’s influence in his Alimosho stronghold, by promoting HE Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, the remnants of the Justice Forum and anti Aregbesola / Enilolobo elements in the constituency.

Osun State Governor Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola was also directed by Tinubu to decisively deal with and demystify Aregbesola by rolling back all his unpopular policies to the glee of many indigenes of the state of living spring.

The rest as they say is history. Aregbesola is now fighting for his political life in Osun. He has lost control of the APC party structures in the state and all the cases he has filed in court have been thrown out with ignominy.

The APC National Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee CECPC recognised the Oyetola faction and Oyetola is set to clinch the APC ticket despite the tantrums of Aregbesola and his diminishing supporters, the Governor has the backings of all men of worth in the state, to the chagrin of Aregbesola and his co travellers .

It is indeed ironical that within just 3 years the same evil that Aregbesola perpetuated against Ambode and uncountable others is being visited on him by God who does not forget, who rewards according to actions and inactions. Retributive justice can be swift and decisive as the sun begins to set on Rauf Aregbesola’s political career.

A socio-political group, under the auspices of the Yoruba Ronu Group, has warned against involving in campaign of calumny ahead of the forthcoming 2023 elections.

Specifically, the group condemned some alleged sponsored online media attacks against one of the presidential aspirants and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu.

The chairman of the group, Mr Diran Iyantan, in a statement, on Tuesday, said mischievous posts online had become a routine, alleging that the source of those publications is well known and traceable to certain misguided politicians and fake human rights crusaders.

Iyatan said, “We have repeatedly stated in our previous releases that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s ambition does not stop other Yoruba or any South-West person from aspiring to the same position. We just feel that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has a better chance than anyone else at clinching the position which is the reason for our support for him.

“It is, therefore, sad to see fellow Yoruba persons casting aspersions on the person of Jagaban for flying high the flag of the Yoruba race. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s interest after leaving office has been to help nurture and consolidate democracy in Nigeria. This, he has done, creditably, well. In addition, he has helped the progressives to attain the country’s presidency.

“We are aware that the stakes are high as the presidential election approaches, and desperate politicians will resort to different gimmicks, basically, to rock the boat. Those who have committed themselves to a sustained campaign of calumny in the media against the person of Asiwaju Tinubu, the former Governor of Lagos State, will labour in vain and they are well known to us.

“We are aware that these cowards and hack-writers have benefited from Asiwaju’s benevolence in the past, only to turn around and sponsor negative publications to impugn his reputation. We charge them to desist forthwith from such callousness because their duplicitous conduct will eventually hunt them down.”

The group urged politicians to promote their political party interest, to conduct themselves with maturity, dignity and mutual respect in the interest of the people of Yoruba-land and, by extension, Nigeria.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Ila Federal Constituency agreed to work for Oyetola’s re-election come July 16th, 2022.

The communique reads in part, “Having monitored, evaluated and reviewed the performances of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in office, members of the All Progressives Congress, Ila/Boluwaduro/ Ifedayo Federal Constituency hereby noted that the Governor has recorded outstanding performance in Office and thus deserves to be re-elected.

“The name, Gboyega Oyetola, is on the lips of old and young, male and female residents, indigenes and non-indigenes of the State and beyond. This is because the Governor has etched his name in the sands of time with his leadership qualities and managerial know-how.

“Considering that there is presently no individual among the array of aspirants to the office of the Executive Governor of the State of Osun that can match the credential of the incumbent Governor in experience and personality, and the need for continuity of people-oriented projects and lofty programmes embarked upon by his administration, hence, the need for us to adopt and endorse him as our candidate in the forthcoming governorship election.”

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, on Monday, lambasted those he once trusted politically, accusing them of betrayal.

The former governor of Osun State from 2010 to 2018 declared that enough is enough for the politics of godfatherism and enthronement by treacherous leaders who equated themselves to the status of a god.

The 64-year-old minister said he trusted All Progressives Congress National Leader, Bola Tinubu, but the ex-governor of Lagos State repaid him with betrayal.

Aregbesola accused Tinubu; a former APC interim chairman and ex-governor of Osun State, Bisi Akande, of foisting the current governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, on the people, against popular will.

Aregbesola, who leads an APC faction in the state and who had been engaged in a feud with his successor, Oyetola, accused the incumbent governor of not consolidating on his eight-year achievements.

Aregbesola, therefore, called on the party members in Osun to support a former Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti, in Saturday’s governorship primary.

He also said just as ex-governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, was rejected by APC members in 2019 for working against the laid down rules, Oyetola would be thrown out of office after just a term.

The minister, who declared that the present administration in the state had deviated from the true tenets of the APC, also accused those at the helms of affairs of jettisoning true democracy and the principles which the party and its heroes stand for.

The former governor spoke in the Ijebu Jesa area of the state while addressing members of the APC ahead of Saturday’s governorship primary election.

The aspirants warming up for the party primary include the incumbent governor, Oyetola; former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Yusuff Lasun; and former Secretary to the State Government, Adeoti; who recently returned to the ruling APC in June 2020, from the Action Democratic Party.

Aregbesola and Tinubu had been decade-long political associates. The former was Director of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Organisation who drove the electoral victory of Bola Tinubu in 1999 and also ensured Tinubu’s return to office in 2003. Aregbesola was also Commissioner of Works and Infrastructure while Tinubu was Lagos governor.

Many keen observers had watched suspiciously the worsening relationship between Tinubu and Aregbesola. The minister was not seen visiting Tinubu in London when he was hospitalised for over three months for knee surgery and when over 100 notable politicians turned the APC leader’s London home to a Mecca of sorts in 2021. Also, Aregbesola has not been seen associating himself with the 2023 presidential ambition of Tinubu.

Aregbesola has been having a running tussle with Oyetola over what he termed poor leadership and over what appeared to be a struggle for the control of the APC organs in Osun State.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Governor Mai Mala Buni APC caretaker committee recently inaugurated Oyetola’s man, Gboyega Famoodun, as the recognised party chairman in Osun, and disregarded Aregbesola’s faction.
