All the criticisms and counter-claims frm perceived northerners were not unexpected. Had a similar reaction frm a hausa woman I discussed this with on my last trip 2 lagos. While I cannot deny that this is a general issue, i can strongly argue that d case occurs worst in d north. I jst ddnt wana bore y'all wf details of ma entire experience. D average age of sec sch leavers der is 20 while in d south is 16. In d sch, onli d principal has a B.Ed. D vice principal HND. Other 'senior' members of staff have just NCE. And most others are just Sch Cert-holding floating teachers. Teachers neva communicate students in english. It's hausa al d way, even during most assembly sessions. 80% of d students hav no ambition of furthering. All they wana do is go back 2 their rice and cassava farms. A student failed to write a core subject during d last NECO exam just to work on d farm. Admitting this is an existing problem is a positive step to solvin it.

It's such a pain in the neck.

I'm a serving corp member in one of the northern states and teaching in this Govt Sen Sec Sch has not been a bumper ride. I was assigned to teach mathematics and my first class was in SS3.

I was solving statistics and got to a point where I exclaimed '6x6'. The whole class was silent like a grave. (Prior to this time I had been carrying everyone along, with an intermittent 'understood?' and they would chorus a 'yes sir').

I then started pointing at students randomly. Some said 12, some, 10. Most others were jst mute (these were students who would b sitting 4 SSCE 3months from that time ). Only one student, the head prefect bailed the class. Was further shocked the following day when some students I had given †he task of studying the multiplication table couldn't recite 2x table past '2x5'.

It goes on an on... SS2 students also can't differentiate between '2 raise to power 3' and 2x3. To say the end of term assessment was woeful would b needless.

My counterparts in other northern states also experienced same and it cuts across all subjects. It's so discouraging, as this means students can't reproduce what u teach 'em owing to lack of the basic knowledge they ought 2 have acquired before that level.

This got me worried about the future of these lads.

D teacher didnt mind buh i kept on dishin it out generously as he continued beating hopin dt wuld make him stop d beating. Ds man got angrier and tot d cane wasnt paining me so he intnsified his efforts. Omo com c me weeping and farting. Even students waiting 2b beaten alredy had tears in their eyes frm d intense laughter my farting talent had caused them.

Their standard there is undoubtedly no reference point, stil @ d primitive stage and this reflects on their ranking among universities in 9ja. This wil pas 4 no more than a 3.8 in FUTA. A 3.5 stud hre wuld mke 1st class wf ease @ CU.
