I hope by now, you have started adjusting your CV to accommodate the job experience tips enumerated above. |
Do you know that your salary at the entry level will be negotiated base on your assessment. Two people with same qualification will be paid differently base on what they intend to offer. Also, future salary adjustment will be on your performance. There is one thing young graduates don't know, on the job floor, there is a lot of identity competition. Everybody wants to stands out as the major problem solver. Nobody will cover your inefficiency. Problems you could not solved will be recorded against you. Credit goes to your colleagues that solved same. Promotion is simply base on that, no two ways about it. My dear, for your interest sake, start reading, researching, and learning on your future Jobs. |
Do you know that what boost your confidence in any interview is what you know. Let me sound it clear to you, Aptitude test is a filter to reduce the number to a manageable size after which the major - the knowledge based interview. The earlier you start learning industrial processes and activities, the better. Let's me ask , how much do you know about industrial electronics ? this is something you cannot avoid and escape. Mechanical, electrical, process, production, industrial, and chemical engineers, you can't do well without good knowledge of electronics. Same to those that will be in quality control department I.e. Industrial chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, food technology etc These electronics parts are very expensive and easy to damage. Let's take for example, something broke inside the machine, and you as mechanic has to fix the problem, ideally, an electrician should be close to assist you but may not be available all the time. In the case of not having an assistance from electrician, you have to fix the problem alone. There is every tendency that you might damage something if you're not very knowledgeable in this regard. The consequences may be unbearable. Please increase your knowledge base. |
If you're lazy type, even if you succeeded in being employed, either you remain stagnant in one position or you may be ejected. Before my first job engagement, I studied more than I did during my final year exam. Those theories you read in school must be applied to the real job life. Let's me tell you why you should get serious. Let's say you're employed as an electrical engineer. Depending on the organization, you might be expected to get used to the system within three or six months. If not well rooted in knowledge, even after one year, you still see yourself floating. Six months is probation period - Time to confirm your appointment. This is how your inefficiency will be exposed. Majority of the organizations believed that three months is enough for you to get used to the system after which you're scheduled to run a shift. If given a shift to run as an electrician for example, and you're not able to solve the electrical problems that occurred during your shift, just consider yourself to have lost the job. You can now see the reason to get serious and advance your knowledge base. |
4. Downtime Analysis Using Refinery as an example, 650,000 barrels of oil are to be produced daily. That's the target but the daily production values will surely differs. The ideal situation can deliver the value but can we get the perfect situation ? Of course NO. You can find out that there's always a difference between the targeted value and the actualised value. This difference in value differs on daily basis. This gap in values is generated by a number of factors. These factors if well captured can be worked upon and eliminated in other to close the gap. It's somebody's job to put this record together, analyze them, and forward same to the Engineering maintenance team or the management as the case maybe. The period or the time machine or the system is down and not available for production is called downtime. Capturing this time and the causes of the machine unavailability and reporting them with view to forestall re- occurrences is known as Downtime Analysis. This is done in most companies though. in different ways. You can study the topic further and include it in your CV. How prepared are you? |
Dangote group is managed by Indians and am privileged to have worked with a lot of them. I will tell you some secret. If you leave Dangote companies to be managed by Nigerians, they will collapse within six months. Tribalism and Nepotism will bury them. Dangote knows this, the reason for being managed by foreigners. For you to work in the complex, it must be on merit mostly. There are many entrances to the complex: 1. Fresh graduate/trainee 2. Experience recruit 3. Contract staff 4. Expatriates etc However, whichever road you follow enter, you have to congratulate yourself for not finding it easy. Sometime ago, I applied to work at Chivita company, CHI Limited managed by Indians. I got the job and will relay my experience to you. First, it was aptitude test which I know I didn't performed well but my name scaled through the second stage. Why ?- My CV was stronger than the aptitude test result. I went through about three stages, all bordered on technical knowledge, the final stage was salary negotiation. I remember, some of the questions were 1. What's the difference between solid state relay and electromagnetic relay 2. Differentiate between Sensor and Transducer These and others, I answered correctly and that earned me the job. Most people here are young graduates, and may not have entered factory before. Some are suffering from I too know but know nothing in reality. Please calm down and help yourself. The truth remains that you're likely going to lose the offer having gone long way on the journey as a result of shallow knowledge. At this point, if we put your knowledge base on a scale, what will be the value ? |
The much awaited industrial revolution is set. The positive change is here, about to happen only to the prepared minds. Someone rightly said, and I quote " over 70% skill staff that will work in the refinery will be Indians ". That's an indisputable fact. The question is why is it so ? Of course you know the answer - Nigeria lack skill workers. India is top in the rank of poor nations just like Nigeria but they kept on improving daily. Unfortunately, for Nigeria, especially the youth, the energy is used negatively. Time and data wasted on ethnic divisions, unfruitful relationship, nude videos, etc. You can't be doing the same thing continuously and expect different results. The truth is that no serious and future minded individuals will engage in the vices above. Yes, there is high level of unemployment in Nigeria, whose cause ? the opportunity of employment is here and Indians are taking it over? Why wouldn't they ? The are prepared ahead of time. Nigerians are not. Now, let revolt and chase them away and take our job positions ! Remember we have other four refineries before, none is working because we lack the technical skills to maintain them. Also, remember Ajaokuta Steel company is moribund for same reason. Now, we must wake up from our sleep and take over what is ours. This is a gradual process. The required knowledge is scare, hidden and unavailable. Even when available, the cost is too high. I was privileged and opportune to acquire this knowledge and cannot die with it. In this thread, I will be dishing out the industrial skills. Rubyjade:That's the awareness we're creating. We should acquire the necessary skills |
hosemujica:Exactly |
Dshocker:Very true at Nigerian's disadvantage. We must reverse the trend. Please, youths get prepared and take over your jobs |
WhizdomXX:You're on the right track |
Hamachi:Good question This is another hidden area which I as the writer is hoping to tap from. This supply chain is a broad area and covers many field. It depends on your area of interest and knowledge. A lot are required in the entire process of production ranging from raw materials, machines, human resources, to the dispatch of the finished goods. In Engineering for example, a singular machine is an aggregate of many parts produced by many companies namely Siemens, Omron, Danfoss, ABB, G.D, Phoenix Contact, Mitsubishi, Sick, Pilz, etc. These machines are numerous with thousands of component parts from hundreds of manufacturers. In as much as production is ongoing, these parts keeps on failing and must be replaced. Its nearly impossible to keep spares of these parts in the engineering store because of the huge money involved, though some are critical and must be provided. Here, one can be rep to any of the manufacturers of these parts. What about providing the raw materials, dispatching of finished goods, supplying byproducts to other companies ? What about auxiliary companies? Same applicable here. How prepared are you? |
Engryagulam:Brother, the efforts are commendable. Add prayer to it. God will see you throgh |
3. SAFETY Another keyword that should be in your work experience is safety and how to use PPE (Personal protective Equipment). Irrespective of the industries and what they produce, SAFETY is Paramount important. There is what they called safe ACTS and safe CONDITIONS. Also unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. Every employee would like to employ individuals that can act safe. You need to show that you're safe conscious and conversant with the slogan " Safety First ". Let's look at this example, there is a scheduled maintenance on the power line (NEPA) and they switch off the line. Now, Engineers are carrying out repairs along the line. You, as a staff working in the control room, let say you were not aware of the planned maintenance, just resumed duty and discovered the line was switched off. You cannot just go and switch the power back. There are lay down procedures you MUST follow before you can return the power back. That procedure is what is called CHECKLIST. Without checklist, the result will be fatal. You can see from the above example, safety is very important in working in any industry and so should be highlighted in your work experience. Try learn how to operate fire extinguishers and their classes. I have introduced you to safety, please learn more on that. How prepared are you? |
depato88:What's your field of study? |
2. Inventory Control Management This is the second key words that should be added to your CV today. Have you ever entered into an Igbo man big shop. Let's take for example spare parts. You will see variety of spares stacked in different positions. Ask a particular item, the shop owner will take some times to search for it and may tell you it has finished while that item may be hidden somewhere. This is a problem awaiting for solution which the young graduate should provide the solutions to business owners. Just imagine a big industry, where you have different raw materials stocked piled in tons, varieties of machines and spare parts, finished goods etc. Unlike the shop owners, in industry, there are accurate records and locations for each of these materials. Ask for any, the person in charge of the inventory will tell you the amount that remains, location, and usage. There are many method of inventory management: BIN cards, SAP, etc. This is just to expose you to the topic, its left for you to dig deep on it. How prepared are you? |
If you buy 5kg semovita from market and measure same at home, it gives you same value. Same to 50 kg of cement, 1 litre of groundnut oil, 50Cl of coke, 25g of salt, 500g of OMO detergent, 5 litres from petrol station. In pharmaceutical industry, you get different gram composition of drugs. From the above, you discovered that many products and industries are involved but one thing is common here. That's measurement. You can imagine the consequences of error in these measurement. In the case of drugs - death. Here comes in calibration, an act of ensuring accurate and error free measurement. Study about calibration and types and include the word in your CV today as experience acquired. If I start to go into explaining calibration, I may end up writing a book. At least I have introduce the word to you. Just follow up. How prepared are you? |

What are those common activities and operations ? Am going to mention them though not in any order. 1. CALIBRATION What is calibration? |
Do you know that there are activities and operations that are common in the industries though done in different ways. When they talk about job experience, they are referring to those activities. You may not have done any of those activities practically but having good understanding of them and incorporate them in your CVs make the employers see you to have gotten the required experience. More so, this deep understanding and knowledge boost your courage and confidence in any interview to be attended |
Let me not sound high by talking about Automation, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Project, Mechatronics, Process, Quality, Electrical, Spare parts inventory management, Procurement, Industrial, and Production Engineering. Let's start low Do you know you can learn forklift driving, truck driving, fire service skill, safety management, etc Any of these and others not mentioned above can get you the ticket. How prepared are you? |
Olachase:Yes, you're Mechanical or Electronic brakes are optional depending on the application. |
Olachase:If you're in conversant with induction motor, there is what is called slip angle. The angle between the magnetic fields speed produced by the stator coils and that of the rotor. Normally, the rotor field speed lags behind that of the stator field. There are conditions that makes the rotor field speed higher than that of the stator field speed. If that happens, the motor start acting like a generator and that's what's called regeneration. How I solved it There is a unit attached to a drive system called Electronic brake. That unit handles regeneration faults. When I open the unit, I discovered that the fuse cut and I made a replacement. |
