But wages in Italy is higher than Portugal. Salaries are low in Portugal, but the standard of living is good. The cost of living is ok too. It's just a low-key country.
I'm starting a mobility masters next month. Going to Portugal and Italy. I have option of doing my post study permit in any of these 2 countries. By next year, I will make my decision whether to remain in Italy after graduation or go back to Portugal.

For your visa application, you can use Qatar airways, or Ethiopian airline to book your flight (don't pay, just reserve it and print).

If you can prove the connection between you guys, that shouldn't be a problem.
But it's better to use someone that has same surname with you. In my case, I used my uncle. He provided sponsorship letter, employment letter and his passport data page.
Got my Visa in less than 2 weeks.

Check booking.com put a location close to your school.But they are in most cities...it will be expensive to stay there permanently compared to renting your own room but ok for a few days.

Pay for a hostel for a week,BC border agent go ask for proof of accommodation,it also helps you settle down . Look for a house when you arrive within 1 week .It's hard getting a place from Nigeria unless you have someone here already.
