CelebritiesTonto Dikeh, Kenneth Okonkwo Honoured At Nollywood New Yam Festival (photo) by zainam(op): 9:01am On Nov 03, 2019
Nollywood stars Kenneth Okonkwo and Tonto Dikeh flanked by relatives and well-wishers at the 2019 Nollywood New Yam Festival in Abuja.

Veteran Nollywood actors Kenneth Okonkwo and Tonto Dikeh have been honoured with cultural titles at the 2019 Nollywood New Yam Festival, an annual thespians’ fiesta, which showcases Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the duo received the awards at the annual cultural event held at the Heritage Africa Centre on Saturday in Abuja.

Kenneth Okonkwo, a foremost Nollywood actor, was honored with the title ‘Agujiugo of Nollywood’, while Tonto Dikeh was named the ‘International Ambassador of Culture for Nollywood’.

Mr Agility Onwurah, Chief Executive Officer of Agile 247.Com, organiser of the event , commended the awardees, adding that the honour was to “tell them that their contribution to Nollywood is recognised”.

“Nollywood is our own, and anyone who has contributed to its growth and development, in what ever capacity should be celebrated.

“We hope that this honour will spur them to doing more for our dear industry,” he said .

NAN reports that it was a night Nollywood watchers will not forget in a hurry as they enjoyed the company of favourite Nollywood celebrities as artistes and cultural troupes took their turn to entertain guests.

Filmmakers and actors drawn from across Nigeria as well as traditional chiefs were present at the festival, which fans now look forward to every year.

Onwurah said, on the sidelines of the event, that the initiative was to present a platform where artistes as models and opinion leaders can promote Nigerian culture.

He noted that since the movie industry was a veritable instrument in communicating ideas and lifestyle, including cultural heritage, every artiste ought to be a cultural ambassador.

“Culture defines a people and anyone who forgets its culture, forgets its root and identity.

“The festival is simply a platform where celebrities identify with culture and promote it to their fans and followers that no matter the influence of westernisation, we must uphold what defines us.

“Artistes are supposed to be mirrors of society, and that is why we are proudly showcasing our culture to fans, especially young Nigerians who are the future generation,” he said.

He, however, explained that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, New Yam Festival was not a fetish practice, as it was just a medium of “celebrating what we have”.

“As you can see, no fetish practice was observed here, as we simply pray on the yam as meal and we share among to everyone.”

He explained that the festival had evolved over the years into a rallying point for Nollywood stakeholders, fans and culture enthusiasts.

He noted that the festival was already a household name in the FCT, and therefore urged relevant stakeholders to support the organisers for its continuity.

“Each edition of the festival has always come better, and this is a testimony that people are proud of our culture and want to identify with it,” he said.

High point of the event was the unveiling of the roasted yam, spiced with traditional delicacies and the presentation of awards to some industry players and watchers.

EducationFUNAAB Expels Michael Adewale Ifemosu For Writing Open Letter To VC On Facebook by zainam(op): 8:46am On Nov 03, 2019
A 200-Level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Michael Adewale Ifemosu, has been expelled by the university for allegedly posting an open letter on his Facebook page to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Kolawole Salako.

FUNAAB said Ifemosu was expelled because he posted an open letter on the internet to the Vice Chancellor, in which he was said to have raised what it called allegations and misrepresentation of fact about the university.

Ifemosu, with Matric No. 20016/1186, was said to have posted the letter on Facebook in July 2019.

DAILY POST learnt that Ifemosu is the Convener, Youth In Good Governance Initiative (YIGGI), and Ogun State Secretary for African Action Congress (AAC) – the political party under which Omoyele Sowore contested as the 2019 presidential candidate.

In the said open letter, Ifemosu talked about the alleged poor transportation system of the institution, as well as the way students were reportedly being harassed by the police.

He accused the management of “lackadaisical attitude and unprofessional management decisions” which he said was causing calamitous implosion in FUNAAB.

His words, “Students lectures starts 9am and it is no more news that Funaabites queue, fight, and struggle to attend classes and also leave the school premises, however The Vice chancellor and the entire University Management team is seen with one or two official car(s); this makes transportation easier for them while student remain stranded and languishing in an unending tragedy.

“The Funaab Bureau of Transport (FUNAABOT) has performed below expectations despite millions of naira allotted and allocated to the department for the purchase and renovation of MANCOTS but all went down the drain. Those monies remain carpeted till this moment.

“Again! I read in the News that the Vice-Chancellor of Funaab wrote to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that they are free to arrest students found wanting and guilty of cybercrimes.

“I would have said it was a good move not until I became a victim and also received report of the arrest and detention of innocent students who were unjustly Harrassed , Extorted and Brutalized.

“This is what you get when people who if managing a poultry, would make sure eggs are stolen, are given a University to manage.

“It is rather unfortunate that we have accepted the sad reality that relegates our ‘scholars’ to chasers of political appointments – people who are ready to lick butts to be made INEC returning officers, Political Aides, VCs , Directors, Deans and even Head of Departments.”

Angered by Ifemosu’s open letter on Facebook, the young man had his studentship terminated by the Senate of the university.

In his letter of expulsion signed by the Registrar, Dr Bola Adekola, the university confirmed that it expelled the student for writing an open letter on Facebook to the Vice Chancellor of FUNAAB.

The expulsion letter, which was received by Ifemosu on Friday, reads:

“You would recall that in July 2019, you posted an open letter on the Internet to the Vice Chancellor of the school in which you raised allegations and misrepresentation of fact about the university.

“At the Student Disciplinary Committee meeting held on August 29, 2019, you were invited for the purpose of giving you fair hearing on the allegation of an act perpetrated through the Internet, that is inimical to the integrity and corporate image of the university.

“You would also recall that during the interaction, you took full responsibility for the publication and were unable to substantiate any of the allegations raised in your letter against the management and staff of the university.

“Senate at its 217th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, October 17, 2019, considered the report of the Student Disciplinary Committee on the allegation and thus decided that you have been found culpable of insubordination to university officials, defamation of character and act perpetrated through the Internet that is inimical to the integrity and corporate image of the university based on the extant rules and regulations on penalties for various offenses by students of the university.

“Consequent upon the decision of Senate, you’re hereby expelled from the university as provided for the offenses committed by you.

“You should surrender all university properties in your possession including the university identity card to the Dean, Student Affairs.”

“Henceforth, you are not allowed to enter the university campus without a prior written approval of the Registrar. The University Chief Environment officer is by a copy of this letter instructed to strictly prevent you from entering the campus forthwith.”

See Ifemosu’s open letter:

OPEN LETTER TO THE VICE- CHANCELLOR, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, ABEOKUTA, PROFESSOR SALAKO ON THE LINGERING TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM AND THE INDISCRIMINATE ARREST OF STUDENTS BY SARS AND EFCC OFFICIALS.

IFEMOSU MICHAEL ADEWALE.

I am Ifemosu Michael Adewale and am dissatisfied and saddened by the Looming Calamitous Implosion rocking Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta students day to day activities over the lackadaisical attitude and unprofessional management decisions.

Real education means transiting from a level of unconsciousness to a level of consciousness till you hit the highest level.

This is what is expected of a School like Funaab but intentionally she is not doing that; It could have been Worse!

I have decided to wade into the recent imbroglio militating against Funaabites and share my thoughts unbiased, relating to some personal and General outcry of the students.

Transportation has been one of the Problems Funaabites face Day In…. Day Out but the non-challant attitude of the University management can be grossly seen because the chaos has been lingering for over Two(2) Years and nothing seems to change.

Students lectures starts 9am and it is no more news that Funaabites queue, fight, and struggle to attend classes and also leave the school premises, however The Vice chancellor and the entire University Management team is seen with one or two official car(s); this makes transportation easier for them while student remain stranded and languishing in an unending tragedy.

The Funaab Bureau of Transport (FUNAABOT) has performed below expectations despite millions of naira allotted and allocated to the department for the purchase and renovation of MANCOTS but all went down the drain.

Those monies remain carpeted till this moment.

Again! I read in the News that the Vice-Chancellor of Funaab wrote to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that they are free to arrest students found wanting and guilty of cybercrimes.

I would have said it was a good move not until I became a victim and also received report of the arrest and detention of innocent students who were unjustly Harrassed , Extorted and Brutalized.

This is what you get when people who if managing a poultry, would make sure eggs are stolen, are given a University to manage.

It is rather unfortunate that we have accepted the sad reality that relegates our ‘scholars’ to chasers of political appointments – people who are ready to lick butts to be made INEC returning officers, Political Aides, VCs , Directors, Deans and even Head of Departments.

This is the reality here while elsewhere Professors are busy in the libraries and research centres trying to save the World.

How do you expect a Professor who has received over 50 million dollars in grants from Bill Gates Foundation to be hustling to be a Vice-Chancellor, Dean or Director so he can start siphoning monies? He is busy of course! But right here in Funaab, it is the best thing that can happen to a Professor.

He/She would celebrate God’s faithfulness as he/she now has unfettered access to public funds.

It is on this note, I would, as an act of benevolence want to proffer solutions to these shameful and unfortunate events displayed by the power-brokers at the University.

There is a drastic need for the resources of the University to come under democratic control and management which should also involve students.

It is highly unreasonable how the major constituents of a Community are not part of decision making; decisions that affect their well-being and the quality of what they offer the World in the future of work.

Do you know that the Federal University of Agriculture like most Universities have failed to establish a fully constituted Federal University of Agriculture bureau of Transportation (FUNAABOT)? So I Advise that the duely constitution of this bureau should be setup and transparency should set in.

The University Management should meet the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the State, the Road Transport Employers Agency (RTEAN) to Foster the diversion of commercial vehicles to ply Funaab Road.

Budget Monitoring Committee involving key stakeholders! Despite an agreement signed between ASUU and the Federal Government as far back as 2013 to check the spending of resources.

It provides for students to be members of the University Budget Monitoring Committee (UBMC). This would bring about the much-talked-about probity and accountability by both parties.

This is therefore a call for Student Union Government under Com. D’ola to begin to organize towards enthroning a radical student leadership on that Campus.

Also there should be Total reversal of EFCC, SARS arresting students indiscriminately in and around the school premises, because more innocent students like me have been Extorted and Harrassed by SARS officials recently.

The EFCC and SARS officials Arrest Students anyhow most especially when the student is Neatly Dressed, Using iPhones, and probably have a TV set and when you ask them what you have done, the Response will be Your Vice-Chancellor invited us and if you don’t cooperate we will make sure the Management (Senate) is informed and your studentship will be terminated!!!

There should be a limit to the Terrifying ordeal of students under this Criminals in Uniform.

Students Rights shouldn’t be violated for any reason(s).

This is not only about the indiscriminate arrest on the students, but also the bad name this act gives to the school; You will agree with me that this doesn’t give the Students and management the deserved honour amongst other Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.

The Management should be aware that Funaabites needs Promotion in our academic prowess, sporting activities, talent and technological advancement and not Crimes which Gross Funaabites are innocent of.

This would do the University a lot of good if it can be done and effected.

Ifemosu Michael Adewale is the Convener, Youth In Good Governance Initiative (YIGGI), Ogun State Secretary for African Action Congress (AAC) and Student of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.

CelebritiesHow Rituals, Fraud In Nigeria Can Be Tackled – Actor Kenneth Okonkwo by zainam(op): 8:41am On Nov 03, 2019
Veteran actor and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, who recently got a Chieftaincy title from Nollywood, has said he’s not pleased that some Nigerian youths are still caught up in rituals, fraud and other vices.

The Living in Bondage star actor said filmmakers should jointly make efforts to combat the ills of the society, especially fast-lane money making.
“The fact that even after 27 years we did Living In Bondage that Rituals and fraud are still experienced in Nigeria, it means lots more need to be done. Filmmakers should continue hammering on it with their productions and the consequences thereof. The consequences of selling your soul to the devil is that, he comes after everything you own, even your lineage. It is a blood covenant, it comes back to hunt you; even your generations. So the youths should take note. What can you exchange for your soul?,” he told said.

The trained lawyer also maintained that he was usually finicky about the type of movies he appeared in.

“From the time of Living in Bondage, I have always been very selective about the movies I appear in. It has to be up to my taste and standard. After doing a movie like Living in Bondage, it wouldn’t be good for one to appear to be nosediving.
However, after being in the business of making movies for almost 30 years, I think it’s time for me to exploit the other talents I have by being more like a tutor to the younger ones.”
