Nurses at Liberia’s largest hospital went on strike on Monday, demanding better pay and equipment to protect them against a deadly Ebola epidemic which has killed hundreds in the West African nation. Spokesman for the strikers at Monrovia’s John F Kennedy hospital, John Tugbeh, said the nurses would not return to work until they are supplied with “personal protective equipment”, the hazmat-style suits which guard against infectious diseases. “From the beginning of the Ebola outbreak we have not had any protective equipment to work with. As a result, so many doctors got infected by the virus. We have to stay home until we get the PPEs,” he said. The Ebola virus, transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, has killed more than 1,500 people in four countries since the start of the year – almost 700 of them in Liberia. A high proportion of the deaths – almost a tenth – have been among health workers and the World Health Organisation has warned that the outbreak is set to get a lot worse, predicting up to 20,000 cases before it is brought under control. The surgical section at JFK is the only trauma referral centre in Liberia and a long-term dispute would severely damage the country’s capability to respond to the Ebola crisis. The hospital closed temporarily in July over the infections and deaths of an unspecified number of health workers who had been treating Ebola patients. “We need proper equipment to work with (and) we need better pay because we are going to risk our lives,” Tueh said. It was not immediately clear how large the striking group was, or what contingency plans were in place at the hospital, which has not made a statement on the action |

Sunday, 31 August 2014 EXCLUSIVE: Boko Haram ‘funded through CBN’ Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis, is giving more information he alleges to be true fact about boko haram. Yesterday, BN brought you the news that Davis, who spent 4 months negotiating with Boko Haram on behalf of the Nigerian government to free the over 200 abducted Chibok school girls, stated that prominent Nigerian politicians are the “primary sponsorers” of Boko Haram. Further more he told the Cable that Boko Haram insurgents informed him that a senior CBN official was involved in funding their terrorism activities. According to him, the official currently works in the currency operations division of the bank, and is the one handling the transactions. Speaking on why Western countries have been unable to track Boko Haram’s source of funding, he says funding is done through “a legal way through the gatekeeper – the CBN, and that makes it very easy to cover up.” One of the biggest of suppliers of arms and military uniforms to the JAS (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, better known as Boko Haram) currently lives in Cairo, Egypt. He is the recipient of money sent by political sponsors from Nigeria. The funds go through the CBN’s financial system and appear to be a legal transaction. Meanwhile, the CBN official who handles the funding is an uncle to three of those arrested in connection with the Nyanya bombings. The three boys lived with him. They were arrested by the SSS (Department of State Security) after the bombings but they do not seem to have been interrogated about their uncle in CBN. Or if they have given up information about their uncle then the SSS has not moved against him Source 1. http://zamanient..com/2014/08/exclusive-boko-haram-funded-through-cbn.html?m=1 Source2. http://www.thecable.ng/exclusive-boko-haram-funded-through-cbn |

virus, which is raging in five West African nations. The experimental Ebola drug ZMapp cured all 18 of the lab monkeys infected with the virus, including those suffering the fever and haemorrhaging characteristic of the disease and just hours from death, scientists have said. Even monkeys not treated until five days after infection survived, the scientists, who published their data in the journal Nature on Friday, said. No other experimental Ebola therapy has ever shown success in primates when given that long after infection; the five days is analogous to nine to 11 days after infection in people. Although two American aid workers who contracted Ebola in the West Afrucan nation of Liberia were cured after receiving ZMapp, their physicians do not know if the drug helped. A Liberian doctor with the disease died this week despite being given the drug, as did a Spanish priest. ZMapp, produced by San Diego-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical, has never been scientifically tested in people, and the current study was the first in primates. The success is therefore a "monumental achievement," virologist Thomas Geisbert of the University of Texas Medical Branch wrote in a commentary on the paper, published online in Nature. There are no approved Ebola vaccines or treatments, but human safety trials will begin next week on a vaccine from GlaxoSmithKline Plc and this autumn on one from NewLink Genetics Corp. The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed 1,552 people out of 3,069 confirmed cases, the World Health Organisation said. The agency said the disease was on pace to infect 20,000 people. Neither governments nor private medical groups have been able to contain the outbreak, which WHO said will almost certainly continue into 2015. Optimal mix ZMapp is a mix of three antibodies that bind to proteins on Ebola viruses and trigger the immune system to destroy them. ZMapp had previously developed two different cocktails of antibodies, but they protected only 43 percent of monkeys when given as late as five days after infection. For the current study, scientists led by Gary Kobinger of the Public Health Agency of Canada set out to identify the optimal mix of antibodies from the earlier cocktails. His team tested the antibodies in guinea pigs one at a time and in various combinations, identifying the two best performers last December. The two graduated to tests in 12 rhesus monkeys. This spring the winner of that face-off, ZMapp, was given to another 18 infected monkeys - three doses at three-day intervals starting three, four or five days after infection. All three untreated monkeys, in contrast, died of Ebola by day eight. With ZMapp, even advanced symptoms such as rashes, liver dysfunction and haemorrhaging disappeared, a result Kobinger called "beyond my own expectations" "This is an extremely encouraging result," said David Evans, professor of virology at England's University of Warwick, who was not involved in the study. The success suggests that ZMapp "offers the best option" for treating Ebola, Kobinger's team wrote, and should be tested for safety in people to enable its compassionate use "as soon as possible". source1:- http://zamanient..com.es/2014/08/good-news-ebola-drug-100-effective-in.html?m=1 source2:- http://m.aljazeera.com/ story/2014829182514685134 Source:- |
