Welcome back. We were supposed to learn
1. Download a copy of Joomla from http://Joomla.org and install it on an online hosting server (online website) but on a second thought, lets learn how to use Joomla offline (localhost). This will save cost on the part of a new user and also someone who has no regular access to internet service. Though you'll need the internet to download some applications and files that we'll be using in this class.

Quickly, download....
1. Joomla from http://Joomla.org/downloads.html
2. AMPPS from http://ampps.com/downloads.

Joomla is the CMS while AMPPS contains Apache, MySQL, MongoDB, PHP, Perl and Python.

Adrenaline123: Chai!! I don come late for class, guy shift for me make i sit down, see lesson!!!

-------------------------------------
Please Sir/Teacher; if I may ask joomla and HTML which one is harder, because am still learning HTML. Thanks
Joomla is easier to learn.

Learning HTML is an added advantage because it's more or less the bedrock of appreciating website development though not a prerequisite in learning Joomla.

CODE-EATER:
Quick question:

Wats so special about WordPress n joomla.

I keep seeing so much buzz abt dem...just don't get d big deal...

U said ur client want a data intensive work or site...couldn't that be achieved by writing a little cms of ur own?

M one of doz guys that believe in code-it-yourself ..I prefare to write my own stuff Dan use a framework.. I USE THEM ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY...

so plz...pardon my ignorance and show me d way..
The beauty of Joomla is using thousands of ways to enhance Joomla to suit your needs when you visit the official Joomla Extension Directory. There, you'll find extensions for just about anything. Do you want to do a membership site, school's records site, bulk SMS site, hotel management site, a blog site, a university site, a site for a government? Just name it, there are extensions most of which are free that will enable you deliver your site quicker and smarter.

The template system is second to none. Google "free joomla template" and you'll be amazed at how many sites that will pop up where you'll get well laid out templates ready for you to use to change the look of your Joomla site in minutes.

For a special project like a Real Estate site, you can get an already made site with all its perks like Property management, agents management, client management etc. #CODE-EATER: As a coder, you know what it takes to write a functional real estate property management site....I'm all for coding as you are but the web is evolving, time is of essence with the deployable resources available to us.

There are millions of free Joomla extensions available for any webmaster to use. So enjoy the class bro!

Chlbenze: Will be glad if you can build a bulk sms site for me or more importantly teach me how to do it, was ask to pay 10k to build am sms website, dnt have much now.
I may not be able to teach you on a one-on-one class at the moment but with what I'll be teaching here, you'll be able to grasp the concept of developing an SMS enabled Joomla site and also sell other products in the same site.

An SMS site for 10k may just mean giving out an already developed site that several others are using for you to just input your business name and start working. You may have little control on the look and feel of the site if you're not skilled in a programming language that was used in developing that site.

2. Installing Joomla in a few steps

There are very simple ways to install Joomla, in fact there are basically two ways to install Joomla.

1. Download a copy of Joomla from http://Joomla.org and install it on your computer offline or on an online hosting server. In plain terms, lets refer to your hosting server as your website running online.
2. Install Joomla directly into your online website using script installer in the control panel of the site.

For the sake of time, I'll talk more on 2. Install Joomla directly into your online website using script installer in the control panel of the site......... and also the later part of option 1. i.e. installing downloaded Joomla files into an online website. The reason is, installing Joomla on your computer to run will require you yo install and configure a local server like Apache, install PHP and Mysql. You can download AMMPS (a software stack from Softaculous enabling Apache, Mysql, MongoDB, PHP, Perl, Python and Softaculous auto-installer on a desktop.) from http://www.ampps.com/downloads and install it in your system. I'll talk about developing a Joomla site offline much later in this course.

This Course will teach you the latest version of Joomla which version 3.1.

So lets go to....

1. Download a copy of Joomla from http://Joomla.org and install it on an online hosting server (online website)

1. Overview of Joomla.

Welcome to Joomla!!!

Joomla is a FREE Content Management System (CMS) that enables you to build world class websites and powerful web applications. It's ease-of-use and extensiveness have made Joomla the most popular website software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source, so it is freely available for everyone to use.

Let me quickly explain what a Content Management System (CMS) means in respect to website development. A CMS is a software that keeps track of all the content of your website. Content can be text, image, video or anything you can think of. A major advantage of using Joomla is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage.

Many Corporate Web sites or portals, Online magazines, newspapers, and publications, Government applications, School and church Web sites are running on Joomla.

Do you know that the Federal Republic of Nigeria's website http://www.nigeria.gov.ng/ was built using Joomla? Emphatically YES!!! And you can guess what that cost. Funny enough, I can put the Nigerian website http://www.nigeria.gov.ng running in a matter of hours.

So you are in for something spectacular here.

sanny18: for a web designer.which is the best,
corel draw or photoshop
Photoshop is tailored towards building websites while CorelDraw is multi-purposed.

So Photoshop is a better option.
WebmastersJoomla FREE Training On Nairaland Live!!! by ZinoFego(op):
My fellow webmasters,

I want to teach you from the scratch how to develop a website using the most popular CMS_ Joomla.

I accidentally stumbled on Joomla some years ago; a client demanded a site requiring storing and retrieving data. I looked everywhere for who to teach me, I spent some good cash yet there were no results until I met a guy who casually showed me the prospects of Joomla and I learnt it on my own!

You may want to know, on what authority or experience I want to teach Joomla. Well, I've been using Joomla to develop websites for over 5yrs now and within this period; I've done over a hundred websites with Joomla only. During the course of the class, if requested, I'll give URLs of some of the sites I've done with Joomla.

Joomla is quite very easy to learn and deploy. Within 3hrs, you can get a Joomla site moderately running. So you don't need to be an experienced website developer to learn Joomla, newbies can deploy a Joomla site within a day.

Requirements to be in this class? None! Anyone who can read this post here and is willing to learn Joomla, can grasp it.

So lets get started...

Table of Content:

1. Overview of Joomla.
2. Installing Joomla in a few steps
3. A tour of the backend (Administrator Panel)
4. Global Configuration of the backend
5. Creating Content
6. Menus

8. Modules
9. Plug-ins
10. Templates
11. User Manager
12. Media Manager
13. Languages
14. SEO & SEF

To be honest, the look and feel of that page is poor even though there are enough content. If you can work with some CMS like Joomla, Wordpress, you'll do a better job with less effort.

WebmastersRe: Is Www.smartweb.com.ng Reliable? by ZinoFego:
I think the 1. below is off point.

Nigerians don't have servers, we ONLY resell! So the power issue is inconsiderable.

Customer service is a relative issue, some of those foreign coys also have worse customer service. I've had my fair share of Naija and foreign host before I started my own hosting firm http://SpringWebHost.com.

@Youngzedd: if you're a newbie, pls use a local firm, you'll gain a whole lot of experience because you can reach our local firms on phone or go to their offices unlike the foreign ones where you need to drop a ticket that may take up to 48hrs to be responded to. Some of our local guys are very experienced and are willing to help.

#bizfirst#:
Hello Youngzedd,

I quite understand your passion for doing business with your fellow 'country man'.

However, when it comes to webhosting, I'd advise you simply go and patronize the 'oyinbo' man. Why?

1. hosting is all about infrastructure (power inclusive). However, you know how Naija dey abi?
2. When you run into trouble with scripts (or a hell lot of code), you'll need a host with great customer service to pull you out of the mess. Naija guy are the WORST when it comes to this type of service. Would you risk your site's existence on that?

Be practical man! Your website is a business! When the time comes to patronize Nigerian hosts, I'll be the first. For now, it's NO NO!

ProEthicalHacka: In information security which web application security is a part of ... All users have their duties you cant leave your responsibilty to the web hosting company.
You have to do your part and they have to do their also.

This applies people who said use inter switch or any other secured payement gateway the thing is like the PCI-DSS policy your application security will first be analyze for compliance to the security standards and policy before the allow you for online payment.

If they can deal with the web hosting company then why the need to analyxe your application.

mededot: Interesting!

First, what sort of website was it? Did the web master build it using CSS/HTMLhuh Or did the webmaster use a CMS. In both Scenarios, what were the proovable security measures that were built into the website by the webmasterhuh

In my opinion, the website owner will most likely not know anything about website security and once the cpanel details have been handed to them, all they do is keep it in their mail somewhere!

The webmaster is responsible for the security of the website he built no matter how much was paid to him to build it. What he can do is offer to recover the website at no cost or if he cannot do it, find someone who can!

I don't see any way in which the website owner would agree to pay for a hacked site recovery! My thoughts!
Hacking a website may not necessarily come from the venerability of the content of the website, in some cases it comes through infiltration via the website host. In this scenario, should the webmaster be liable as well if the client is responsible for the hosting of the site?
WebmastersRe: Who Pays For HACKED Website; Owner Or Webmaster? by ZinoFego(op): 1:06am On Apr 17, 2013
AFOLSNETWORKS: That is not a small ish to tackel.

If the owner of the wesite was adviced properly on web security, and if the owner paid for security, then the webmaster should be held accountable.

But if it is one of these N28,500 cool websites, then how much damage will u claim on the webmaster?
Should security then be charged differently from the fees for developing the site? If that's the case, I'll take that agreement to mean a lifetime insurance of some sort..by that I mean, as long as the website is under the webmaster's management, he's liable for the security of the site.
