Once upon a time, all D’banj had to do to make his song a hit was to simply say “It’s Don Jazzy again” at the beginning of a song. Don Jazzy’s magical hands birthed three of D’Banj’s greatest albums especially one of the best albums to ever come out of Nigeria, “Entertainer.” Industry-shifting songs like “Why Me”, “Tongolo”, “Suddenly”, “Mr Endowed”, “Fall in Love”, etc. We are still waiting and hoping that they work together again because it really feels like they both need it in their lives.


Wizkid – Samklef

This is another artiste-producer combo that we are missing more than the late Umar Yaradua’s time as President of Nigeria when fuel was sold at N65. Samklef’s artistry gave rise to some of the best songs on Wizkid’s best album to date- which coincidentally, was his debut album, “Superstar”. Songs like “Pakurumo”, “Tease Me”, “Slow Whine”, “Wad Up”, and a few others down the line. One can only wonder why they can’t put their differences aside and make good music that both they and us will benefit from.

Davido’s rise to prominence was brought about by one name behind his songs; Shizzy. When “Dami Duro” was released, asides from it being one of the most adrenaline-rushing club bangers of all time, it made everyone ask two questions; who the heck is Davido and what great mind is behind such a killer beat? Nigerians can only ask such questions when they approve of the greatness that they’re hearing. A few years down the line, the Davido-Shizzy combo has birthed great songs like “Skelewu”, “Gobe”, “Ekuro”, “One of a Kind”, and many, many more great songs.


Olamide – Young John The Wicked Producer

Many were of the opinion that Olamide was beginning to reach his peak as an artiste until Young John The Wicked Producer came into his life, and their combo brought great songs like “Story For The Gods”, “Shakiti Bobo”, “Falila Ketan”, “Pepper Dem Gang”, and many others. In fact, restricting Young John The Wicked Producer to just Olamide would be unfair as he has also produced great songs for Lil Kesh and many other YBNL acts.

Rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian might be heading for a divorce following his recent outbursts.

According to Life & Style,  Kim Kardashian has been meeting with lawyers to discuss getting a divorce. They say Kim has been holding on for too long and has even tried covering for Kanye so many times, but she can no longer continue. They are even now sleeping in separate rooms, the sources claim.



“Kim is in talks with lawyers about getting a divorce,” a source exclusively tells Life & Style. “Kanye’s acting more unpredictable than ever. Things have gotten so bad that Kim and Kanye sleep in separate rooms.”

When Kim needs time apart from her husband, she takes her kids to her mother Kris Jenner’s house. Though she can escape his physical presence, there is no way to escape his online presence as he keeps tweeting every chance he gets.



After Kanye professed his love for Donald Trump on Twitter, he followed up with a tweet saying his wife called and asked him to clarify that he doesn’t agree with everything Trump does. But the source said Kanye doesn’t listen to Kim most of the time.

“They fight constantly — blow-out fights,” says the insider.

Kim has endured his behaviour before, but it has now become too much.

The insider says: “Kim is tired of covering for him and putting out fires that he keeps creating. She can’t take it anymore.”

Castle Lite Unlocks concert is in a way kind of different from our Nigeria’s conventional concert because it was headlined by an American rapper J Cole. Someone who considers himself a B-List celebrity. One thing that didn’t sit well about the concert was having Wizkid and Davido as co-headliners in what would be thought of as a hip-hop concert. While rappers like MI Abaga, Falz, YCEE were supporting acts. Yikes!

Having fans vibe and rap along while J Cole performed his set at Castle Lite Unlock draws our attention to hiphop culture in Nigeria.

First of all, the belief that there are no real hip-hop fans in Nigeria should be discarded immediately. Yes indeed besides all the conspiracy theories that real hip-hop fans are only but a few.

Nigerians only want to dance… ain’t really an absolute truth. Nigerians love hip-hop and there is indeed a market for hip-hop in Nigeria. Castle Lite Unlock proved that we love rap music and can rap off some of those hip-hop hits by heart.


Secondly album culture ain’t exactly dead in Nigeria. Same Nigerians who have been accused of not being interested in buying albums bought or yet still found a way to get J Cole’s KOD for free and mastered the lyrics in one week before his concert. That says a lot about the fans. It’s only proves that Nigerians wouldn’t soak up shitty albums because it’s our fave. Truth is every album that was a masterpiece has always been appreciated. Oh let’s talk about MI’s debut and sophomore albums, Naeto C’s debut, the Eldees Trybes Men etc. Those albums were solid and fans showed love.

Nigerian rappers are not consistent in their game. J Cole has five albums to date and Nigerian fans could vibe to all those LP’s to his amazement. Cole has been consistent with his releases, lyrically, production, and marketing. Show me a Nigerian rapper that has been consistent in all fronts? Our hip-hop artists come impress for a minute get complacent and loose the magic. Nigerians rappers are a lot more interested in pulling crowd like their Afropop colleagues which is not a bad idea. Some disgruntled rappers who turn singers and even those that stick with rap cannot give a good live show, performing songs with missing lyrics and merely frolicking the stage.


Another school of thought would insinuate once again that Nigerians don’t love their own. If hiphop in Nigeria is done the way it should be done with great finesse there is no doubt Nigerians would support.

Our pop stars get so much love because they have grown the arts and finessed it. Wizkid got a chance to play at COACHELLA, Davido would perform at WIRELESS this July, that is how much these Afropop stars have grown the art. But hip-hop as it is in Nigeria has not evolved much in comparison to the Afropop music. Sometimes we make the hip-hop thing only about lyrics, but that shouldn’t be all, but the entire arts itself most be improved. What have the so called hip-hop artists and rappers done to make the art of it more entertaining. Kendrick Lamar won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for music, it shows how much hip-hop has grown in America. I can’t remember the last time a Nigerian rapper got nominated for Best International Act: Africa in the BET. It has always been our pop stars.


Who is our best hip-hop artist in Nigeria? Would it be Olamide, Phyno, Falz, YCEE or even MI? SMH!!

Nigerians rappers shouldn’t blame fans for the failure of hip-hop in Nigeria. Rappers don’t even need to fix up their lives like MI Abaga advised. Nope, those hip-hop artists and rappers need to fix up the arts, fix up the hip-hop culture.

It’s very safe to say that Simisola deserves some accolades when it comes to her music. She’s been dropping soft hits back to back and her videos have been doing her music justice.

In her new video ‘Gone for good’, she tells the story of an ex-lover who has her mumu button and doesn’t hesitate to always press it when he wants. The video portrays the full story and is so emotional one might find a few strands of tears escaping from one’s eye, that’s if you’re the emotional type. With the way she’s going the sky is her starting point and it doesn’t seem like she’s going to be giving us any mediocre content anytime soon.
