A trailer driver on Saturday, crushed a tricycle driver to death at Onuimo market, Obowo in Imo state.

It was learnt that the brake of the trailer failed making the driver unable to control the vehicle.

It then rammed into the tricycle, crushing the driver and destroying so many shops and goods at the market.

At least 41 people have survived the bulding collapse involving Ohen Nursery and Primary School, Ita Faji, Lagos Island, Lagos and all of them are in stable condition.

The survivors comprise 22 females, 17 males and two persons whose gender was not listed.

Two teachers, three adults were clearly stated, while the 36 other victims are assumed to be children.

At least 12 persons, including schoolchildren, have been confirmed dead, but with rescue efforts still ongoing at the scene of the incident, the figures of both survivors and the dead could yet rise.

President Muhammadu Buhari says the Federal Government is doing its best to correct and reverse the terrible mismanagement the country has experienced in the past.

He said this on Wednesday when he received a delegation of non-career ambassadors, who came to the State House, Abuja, to congratulate him on his re-election, adding that he believes that “with some luck, our best will be good enough.”

He was quoted as saying this in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

President Buhari further stated that Nigeria was trying to live within her means, “so we can improve our lot,” adding that government was determined to upgrade the country’s profile, both locally and internationally.
He noted that it would be inexcusable for government not to take care of its Ambassadors in their various stations, hence the special attention being paid to the country’s foreign missions.

In response, Ambassador Ashimiyu Olaniyi, who spoke on behalf of delegation said the President’s election in 2015, and his recent re-election, are divine interventions in the affairs of the country.
“You are God-sent. You have always come on stage at the critical moments of our national history to right the wrongs of the past,” Olaniyi said.

He added that the President would be remembered “as an astute political leader who does not interfere in the political affairs of states,” noting that the singular quality has given credibility to all elections conducted since 2015.

The delegation submitted that apart from records of achievements in the three focal areas of securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption, his “integrity” is responsible for his victory.

The ambassadors appreciated the intervention funds that were released to various missions abroad, and pledged continued loyalty and support to the Buhari administration.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 re-arraigned Gbenga Makanjuola, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, before Justice Maureen A. Onyetenu sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on an amended 11-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, accepting cash payment beyond threshold and money laundering to the tune of N3.5 billion ((Three Billion, Five Hundred Million Naira).

Makanjuola is charged along with Kolawole Shittu, cashier to the Senate; Robert Chidozie Mbonu, a former Managing Director, Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, SGBN (currently at large); Melrose General Services Limited and Obiora Amobi, Operation Manager, Melrose General Services Limited.
They were first arraigned on October 3, 2018 before Justice Babs O. Kuewumi of the same court.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Gbenga Makanjuola, sometime in December 2016 in Nigeria, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did accept cash payment of the sum of $500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Dollars) only from Kolawole Shittu without going through a financial institution and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(a) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012) and punishable under Section 16 (2) (b) of the same Act.”

The defendants pleaded "not guilty" to the charges preferred against them.
In view of their pleas, the prosecuting counsel, Kamil Bashir, asked the court for a trial date.

In his response, counsel to the second defendant, Omeoga Chukwu, urged the court to allow the defendants to continue to enjoy the bail earlier granted by the Justice Kuewumi, adding that “the terms were very stringent and verified by the EFCC.”

Justice Onyetenu granted the prayer of the defence on the existing bail.

An Abuja Federal High Court, has restrained the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police from arresting or detaining Femi Fani-Kayode and Yinka Odumakin.

Justice John Tsoho, gave the order on Monday, following an ex parte application argued by Mr Chukwuma Machukwu-Ume (SAN) on behalf of the duo.

Machukwu-Ume told the court that the three security agencies were planning to arrest and detain his clients over comments they made with regard to the travails of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

“The spokesman of the EFCC, Mr Tony Orilede, was alleged to have made the threat to arrest them publicly at a conference where he represented the EFCC chairman.

“He said they are doing everything possible to arrest these two gentlemen just for speaking their minds.

“The EFCC is established to pursue corruption and not comments made by Nigerians, expressing themselves,” he said.

The lawyer told the court that his clients had gone into hiding for fear of being arrested for merely expressing their freedom of speech, alleging that their family lives had also been affected by the alleged threat.

Machukwu-Ume told the court that the application was brought pursuant to Section 6 (6)(b) and Section 46 of the 1999 Constitution as well as Order 4 Rules 3 of the Fundamental Rights Procedure Rules.

He urged the court to grant the order restraining the respondents from arresting and detaining his clients pending the determination of the application on notice.

Justice Tsoho said that he was satisfied that the applicants had made a case that their lives were being threatened.

“I am satisfied that the applicants have made out a case for the court’s intervention.

“Accordingly, the respondents are restrained from either arresting or detaining the applicants on grounds of the applicants’ public statements pending the determination of the application on notice,” the judge ruled.

The Judge adjourned the matter until February 4.

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, is currently meeting with Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs), Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) and commissioners of police at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, Sun News reports.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, is expected to join the meeting at some point, to make a presentation on the electoral commission’s expectation from the police.

Present at the meeting are the 36 state commissioners of police and the Federal Capital Territory, all AIGs, and seven DIGs.

Sources revealed that that meeting would discuss policy issues, police preparation for the general election, conduct and discipline of officers.

President Muhammadu Buhari IGP appointed IGP Adamu on January 15, 2019, following the retirement of ex-IGP Ibrahim Idris, who clocked 60 years on that day.

A Pastor with the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry has been dragged to court along with her three children. For their alleged involvement in the death of a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Joseph Idehen, the police have arraigned a pastor with the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry, Taiwo Idehen, and her three children, Punch Metro reports.

Taiwo and her children, Samuel, Michael and Ruth, were arraigned by the Force Criminal and Intelligence Department on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder, stealing, use of false documents and forgery.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The police alleged that the defendants committed the offences at the deceased’s residence at No. 5 Odetola Street, off Merit Road, Alagbado, Lagos, on July 4, 2016.

According to the police, Taiwo, who was said to have divorced the deceased over 29 years ago, and her three children, allegedly conspired among themselves to murder the retired senior police officer in suspicious circumstances.

They were also alleged to have forged a death certificate from the Ota General Hospital, Ogun State, which was used in conveying the deceased’s corpse to Aragba in Delta State.

It was gathered that Michael allegedly withdrew the sum of N286,000 from the deceased’s account domiciled in First Bank of Nigeria Limited, while all the defendants were accused of fraudulently withdrawing the sum of N2.1m from Joseph’s account domiciled in Zenith Bank Plc.

According to the police prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, the offences are contrary to sections 233, 365 (3) (d), 366 and 287 (5) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

Animashaun told the court that the defendants’ arrest was predicated on a petition dated August 2016, written to the police by the Chambers of Milestone Partners, wherein the alleged role played by each of the defendants in the death of the retired police officer was stated.

He added that upon receiving the petition, the defendants were invited for interrogation and they all wrote confessional statements.

In view of their not guilty plea, Animashaun urged the court to remand them in prison custody pending the conclusion of the matter.

The defendants’ lawyer, Kennedy Osunwa, told the court that he had filed his clients’ bail applications, which had been served on the prosecutor.

Following the applications of the defendants’ lawyer, the presiding judge, Justice Adedayo Akintoye, adjourned the matter till January 25, 2019, for the hearing of their bail application.

She also ordered that all the defendants be remanded in prison custody pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)  sleuths in Bengaluru on Saturday, nabbed a Nigerian woman  and seized 409 Gm cocaine concealed in bread packets.

A 35-year-old South African who greatly values his culture, has killed his 27-year-old fiancée over a bottle of whiskey.

According to Dailysun. Za, when the suspect bought a bottle of Jameson whiskey, he told everyone in his household he would be the one to open it.

But his fiancee, Palesa Moloi, could not resist the booze when she saw it inside the cupboard, and took a sip, triggering the suspect to stab her several times for not obeying him.

Captain Bernard Matimulane said when cops arrived at the couple’s rented room, they found the drunken suspect staring at Palesa’s body.

“When police interrogated him, he told them he killed the woman because she opened his bottle of whiskey and drank some while he was not around. He told the cops only he, as the head of the household, was entitled to open the liquor.

He claimed it was his culture,” he said. The suspect was charged with murder and is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates Court on Thursday.

President Muhammadu Buhari says free, fair and credible elections are the foundation of political stability and peace in any nation, assuring that he will leave a legacy of free and fair elections.

The President said this when he inaugurated the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja on Monday.

He noted that the quality of elections since 2015 had continued to improve with declining levels of problems that had defined elections in the past.

“We have insisted that votes must count and have maintained a policy of non-interference in elections.

“INEC has so far since 2015, conducted fair and credible elections in 195 constituencies nationwide, which have been attested nationwide to be qualitatively better than previous elections.

“Let me reiterate my commitment to free and fair elections. If there is one legacy I want to leave is the enthronement of democracy as a system of government. And for democracy to be enthroned, elections must be free and fair.

“That means citizens have a right to vote for candidates of their choice without intimidation in any form. I have warned INEC and security agencies to that effect.

“We will keep insisting that votes must count. Our campaigns will be anchored on our performance in the last four years,’’ he said.

A 21-year-old man, Samuel Wills, alleged to be a member of a secret cult, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for stabbing a hotel manager on the head with a broken bottle.

Wills, whose address was not provided, is facing four counts of conspiracy, cultism, assault and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the accused committed the offences with some other persons still at large on December 21, at 11:30pm at Ben Jack Hotel in Ifako-Ijaiye area of Lagos.

Oriabure said the accused and his friends beat-up the complainant, Mr Agwu Okike, because of disagreement over the payment of their bill.

“The accused were arguing with a staff over the bill for their drinks and the accused came out to help settle the matter.

“My Lord, they used a broken bottle to stab him on his head and made away with N95, 400 that was in his office,” he said.

The offences contravened Sections 42, 287, 411 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 173 stipulates a three-year jail term for assault.

In her ruling, Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Ojuromi said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused and both sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until February 26 for mention.

The government of Gabon declared that it was in control after an attempted coup by army rebels Monday and that it had arrested most of those involved.

“Calm has returned, the situation is under control,” government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Mapangou told AFP.

Only hours earlier, soldiers burst into state radio and called on the people to “rise up,” an apparent bid to oust ailing President Ali Bongo, who is out of the country. Of the five who did this, according to Mapangou, “four have been arrested and one is on the run.”

A driver operating on one of the car hailing services Nigeria, met his Waterloo, early this morning, after allegedly stealing a phone belonging to his client in Lagos

The suspect had gone to drop the lady at her Omole Estate Phase 1 home, but when she stepped inside to get money to pay for the ride, the man allegedly stole her iPhone 8.

Upon her return, she discovered that her phone was missing, but the driver denied having anything to do with its sudden disappearance.

However, a search was conducted and in the end, the phone was found safely hidden in the car’s sunroof, prompting the driver to be punished and later freed after confessing and apologizing.

The midfielder has flown to Seychelles Island for the holidays and also starting his recovery process.

Eight persons have been confirmed dead after two vehicles; a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a commercial bus, rammed into each other and plunged into a river along the ever busy NPA Expressway in Warri, Delta state today December 29th.

The source explained that the two vehicles were on the same lane of the dual carriageway around the Ekpan community axis of the expressway when the unfortunate incident happened. Eyewitnesses say the commercial bus was parked on the side of the road to pick a passenger when the SUV rammed into it and both plunged into the river with the eight persons on board.

“The bus was picking a passenger around that spot when the Jeep (SUV) on high speed ran into it and pushed the bus and itself into the river. Eight bodies were recovered from the wreckage inside the water. It took the intervention of sympathisers as well as men of the Nigeria Police Force, Ekpan Divisional Headquarters to recover the corpses and evacuate the vehicles from the scene of incident,”

The Independent National Electoral Commission has raised alarm that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities would affect its preparations for the 2019 elections.

On November 5, 2018, ASUU began an indefinite strike action over the failure of the Federal Government to implement three areas in the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union on September 14, 2017.

On Thursday, a National Commissioner for INEC and Chairman of its Information and other Education Committee, Festus Okoye, expressed concerns about the effect of the ASUU strike on the 2019 elections during the opening of a one-day seminar on media gender sensitive reporting.

The commission said that it would deploy over one million ad hoc staff made up of lecturers in federal tertiary institutions, members of the National Youth Service Corps and students of federal tertiary institutions in the elections.

The categories of ad hoc staff to be used during next year’s elections would serve as Returning Officers, Collation Officers, Supervisory Presiding Officers, and Assistant Presiding Officers. But Okoye expressed fear that the elections could be impacted negatively if the strike was not urgently called off.

He said,

“It is next to impossibility for members of the NYSC to provide all the ad hoc staff needs and requirements of the commission, and over 70 per cent of the ad hoc staff requirement in some states of the federation are drawn from students of federal tertiary institutions.

Hence, the lingering strike by ASUU will no doubt have serious impact on the preparations for the conduct of the 2019 elections. We therefore call on ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria to quickly and genuinely resolve the lingering impasse that has led to uncertainty in the education sector.

The national interest, the interest of our democracy and the reputation of Nigeria demand the immediate resolution of the issues that led to the strike and we so urge.

It is important that students in federal tertiary institutions should and must be in school at least a month before the February 16 Presidential and National Assembly elections. They are a critical resource and their absence will have adverse effects on the ad hoc requirements of INEC.”
