Last Tuesday, the American women became just the second US gymnastics squad to win team gold.

On Thursday, we saw a first.

Gabby Douglas became the first American woman to claim team and all-around gold in the same Olympics, completing her meteoric rise to the top of the sport.

Victoria Komova, whose Russian team finished second to the Americans in the team competition, was second best again – .259 points behind Douglas’ total of 62.232.

Russia’s Aliiya Mustafina and U.S.’ Alexandra Raisman finished tied for third, but Mustafina was awarded the bronze based on execution.

It was the third straight Olympics in which an American has won the women’s all-around title.

Douglas follows in the footsteps of Nastia Liukin (2008) and Carly Patterson (2004).

She is also the first African-American woman to win all-around gold.

Douglas was far less known than Jordyn Wieber, the reigning world and national champion in the all-around, who was widely considered the Americans’ best hope at all-around gold.

But Douglas defeated Wieber at Olympic Trials, then nudged her out of a spot in the Olympic all-around competition.

Now she takes the spot that many thought was Wieber’s to lose – that of Olympic all-around champion.

After winning the team final earlier in the Games, USA golden girls Gabrielle "Gabby" Douglas and Aly Raisman had another shot at glory Thursday in the women's all-around competition.

With Russian frontrunners Aliya Mustafina and Viktoria Komova also vying for the most coveted prize in women's gymnastics, the exciting competition came down to the final routines.

After the first rotation on vault, 16-year-old Douglas sat in the top spot in the standings ... and she never gave up that rank, winning the all-around gold medal!

An uncharacteristic and major error on beam left Raisman in fourth place behind Komova (silver) and Mustafina (bronze).


With Komova on her tail throughout all four events, Douglas pulled out the win with a total score of 62.232. It was a pressure-packed fight to the finish and an even more exciting victory for the gymnast who used to struggle with consistency, especially in big meets.

Douglas watched the scoreboard with a serious expression and cried when she saw the result, waving to the crowd.

Her win comes on the heels of another big victory for her: taking home the team gold medal Tuesday with the rest of the "Fab Five: Raisman, McKayla Maroney, PEOPLE.com blogger Jordyn Wieber and Kyla Ross.

The ever-likeable Douglas (who won PEOPLE's favorite of the Fab Five poll) was the only gymnast on the team to compete in all four events of the team final.

I just love her. Even when the other oyinbo girls in her team no dey mind her, even when the crowd didn't cheer for her as much, even when the commentators didn't have much to say, she did her best. And she won.
