Considering the state u came from, u stand a chance because in UNN every state under ELDS always has a lower cut off compared to other states. For example people with aggregate of 260+ from Northern states like Bornu, Nasarrawa were admitted into medicine reason being that there are no much applicants from that state and they are seen as educationally less deveoped states.... In fact I saw someone with an aggregate of about 230+ from a core north admitted into medicine last year(I know cus I applied the school last year, so when the list came out I went through all the names in medicine)..... Regarding the change of institution. Yes, it can be done twice but sadly UNN is starting PUME on the 23rd(tomorrow),so portal for registration portal is already closed. Nonetheless, remove negativity from ur mind. u can make it anywhere so far u are determined. 279 is a pretty nice score if u ask me.

Please is my senoirs is it possible to convert a BDS certificate to an MBBS certificate after study please help

I don't know if you have started your medical phase (MBBS exams) of your Dental surgery training.. Because I'm sure if you have, you won't see the need for the change by the time you complete your dentistry training. I am yet to see a Nigerian dental surgeon who came back for MBBS after BDS. This is probably because, by the time they finish, they'll realise that they are the also doctors, earn same salary in public service, can also do postgraduate in the West African College of Surgeons to become specialists/consultants in a number of dental surgery specialties (oral/maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, oral medicine, orthodontics etc). Many nurse the thought of coming back for MBBS degree but later forsake it when they realise there's no need for it. But I heard it's 18 months. I need to hear from those who have done it though.

My advice is this: Value what you have lest you lose it. Focus on your studies. Dentistry is a course for the determined. Many people are not adequately informed about Dentistry. As a dental student, you're also a medical student because you'll be combining medical workload with that of dentistry. You have to be in a "ghost mode" to be able to write both mbbs and bds exams and pass. So, value what you have and focus on the goal

Really? Care to explain more, stemmez?

Gaining admission into Dentistry is becoming competitive but not yet as competitive as Medicine. This is just a matter of lack of awareness about Dentistry. Most people don't know the undergraduate curriculum of Dentistry except on nairaland. This is because there are very few dental students and dental surgeons. Most of the dental students on their part do not have the luxury of time to come online.

Studying Dentistry is akin to already choosing a medical specialty and focusing on it while studying Medicine alongside dentistry. As you'll get to be writing mbbs exams (bds part A) together with medical students and also writing your dental exams (bds part B) which medical students don't write. With exception of the 4th mbbs exam. After your training, you are all inducted into the MDCN, a body for Doctors. After which you can also pursue postgraduate training (residency) under the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the West African College of Surgeons or the National Postgraduate Medical College.

In summary, dental students write the following exams : 2nd mbbs(2nd bds part A), 2nd bds part B, 3rd mbbs (3rd bds part A), 3rd bds part B, 4th bds (5th mbbs), 5th bds
Total of 6 professional exams

Medical students write: 2nd mbbs, 3rd mbbs, 4th mbbs, 5th mbbs. Total of 5 professional exams

The Mbbs exams for both medical and dental students are graded the same. Pass mark of 50. Same questions and marking schemes.

Gaining admission to either Dentistry or Medicine is not the main issue. The problem is not having to be kicked out after all the hardwork.

Advice: Activate your "ghost mode". Avoid distractions.. Take your studies very serious. Do everything within your power. Read the right materials. Attend lectures. But know what works for you in particular.

You need calculate your score based on UNIJOS modality; then compare it with previous years'. That will give you a clue on what to expect.

I scored 279 too; but I applied for BDS, UNICAL.

I just wonder why students think dentistry is inferior to medicine, without realizing that dentistry, in essence, is a branch of medicine. I have seen surgical cases Prof. S.m. Balaji of India handled that made me believe dentistry is rich in content. If someone graduates in dentistry, he/she will realize it's at par with medicine. Some will talk of job satisfaction, what they like doing. That's a lie. They want to brag around that they are medical doctors while dentists are seen as people pulling teeth out. The public is ignorant; so, i don't blame them. That's a wrong perception of dentistry. Why can't they google about Prof. S.M. Balaji, Dr. Gary Parker, the Chief Medical Officer of African Mercy Ship Hospital who has done incredible oro-facial surgeries for the needy in Africa. Even in South Africa here, a medical doctor who likes oral and maxillofacial surgery, a branch of dentistry, went back to dental school to get BDS so that he can specialize in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Is it oral medicine that i have seen some medical doctors getting a dental degree to specialize in?

Our perception about what people say about dentistry shouldn't becloud our sense of the richness of Dentistry. I know some "ignorant" medical lecturers appear to insinuate that, but that is the highest peak of ignorance. Today, a dentist called oral pathologist diagnoses oral benign and malignant tumors and other pathologies of the oral and maxillofacial region. It's still the same thing a general pathologist does elsewhere in the body. And he also has a working knowledge of general pathology because during residency, he rotated through general pathology dept, without which he will not be a consultant oral pathologist.

Besides, both medical and dental doctors get the same remuneration, the same hospital privileges and the rest. Both medical and dental doctors have the same privileges to be CMDs, CMACs, Directors of Medical Services, consultants, Provosts of Colleges of Medicine which other health courses cannot attain. If dentistry is inferior to medicine, why is it that Dr Gary Parker (a dentist) is the chief medical officer of Africa Mercyship Hospital while an orthopedic surgeon is the assistant chief medical officer? Chief medical officer abroad is the same as head of clinical services/CMAC in a hospital. I don't like people demeaning BDS by saying they want to convert BDS degree to MBBS degree.

I thank you for enlightening him, and that is if he understands and not deceived by his peers.
