What Is The National Youth Service Corps? by YngJay(m): 9:58pm On Sep 25, 2012
Hello. I am from London but my mother has said I had to come to Nigeria for one year to join the NYSC and serve my country. I really do not know what it's all about but I am pretty excited about it. Can you please enlighten me on the following:

1) what do I do or work as?
2) is the position paid?
3) is accomodation provided?
4) where do I work?
5) and what is the experience like?

Thank you in advance for your help

1) what do I do or work as? Service to your nation; from bein a farmer, teacher, et al

2) is the position paid? Federal government pays you 19,800 monthly, the state government could also pay, that will depend on whichever state you are posted to serve

3) is accomodation provided? Depends, if you are lucky your place of primary assignment could provide accomodation for you or your zonal inspector could provide 1 in whichever local government area you are posted to

4) where do I work? Infrastructure, Agriculture, Education and .... (Can't remember the last sector) but its definitely gon' be a rural community

5) and what is the experience like? Now your suffering continues (NYSC)

Enjoy your service to your beloved country Nigeria. Pray you are posted to Imo state, that was where I did mine in Owerri, it was fun for me.. If you happen to be there you'd understand what I mean

I strongly disagree with number four where you said its definitly gonna be in rural area. For the fact you were posted in a rural area doesnt mean every other person will be be posted there as well. Though 80% are mostly posted to the rural area. During my service year, i was posted to Federal ministry of foreign affairs in Abuja metropolis. I participated effectively while in camp so it helps too. I didnt influence my posting to Abj neither did i influence my PPA it was just luck and favour at play. Like he said, NYSC is fun nothing much about it. Every other thing he said is absolutely correct. You getting accomodation depends solely on your PPA. Most persons posted to the rural areas often gets a guaranteed accomodation compared to those posted to the urban areas or capital due to the high cost of living in this area. If you so wish to serve in Ibadan you can still influence your posting in most cases, foreign trained graduates are given preference to choose between Lagos and Abuja or any other state of their choice.

@mr-prince the new policy for nysc suggest every corp member be posted to rural areas, I may be wrong though, fyi I served in Owerri Ministry of Finance. Owerri is the capital of Imo state. The new policy thing wasn't implemented when I did my service year

the policy is strictly against posting corps nenebers to private institutions most especially banks. One of the key sectors is health. So are there no corpers serving in FMC, FGG and the rest of parastatals that are mosly domiciled in state capitals? Presently, havent you seen corpers serving in capitals inspite of the new order? I still see so many of them in lagos metropolis.

Thank you both for your answers it's really helped me. But I'm still confused on certain things.

1) What does PPA and FMC stand for?
2) You both said you worked on the ministry if foreign affairs and ministry of finance. Could you briefly describe the responsibilities and duties you had to perform please?
3) If accomodation is provided would it be like university halls where you live with fellow corps member boys and girl?

Please if any have email send me a mail so we can talk quicker as I really appreciate your feedback. Lethal_k9@hotmail.com thank you (eshe) lol

PPA - Place of Primary Assignment
FMC - Federal Medical Centre
Even when I'd have loved to serve in the East, I was posted to Zamfara State where I served with Tuken Nigeria Limited (MTN Trade Partner) in Gusau; the state capital. The dreaded Sharia State: enough parties, Maami invites & the best part was the Election Offerings(Registration & Election proper).. Twas a time I did enjoyed!
