The Igbo believe that a soul is not yet at rest until its physical body is united with Ali (the earth). In this way, a man's body is reincorporated into the cosmic order and his spirit is allowed to join the ranks of his ancestors in Ali Nmuo (the spirit world), continuing the cycle of rebirth.

It's also believed that if a man dies and his body is not properly buried, then the man's spirit will roam restlessly through the earth and will manifest itself in the form of calamities and bad luck.

The Igbo have a special reverence for the earth which is manifested in practices such as the pouring of libations, and terms such "aruru ali" (abomination) which literally means: "disrupting/turning the earth". These are all reasons why Igbo men/women prefer to take their loved-ones' bodies home for burial instead of leaving them in a foreign cemetery.
