|DHCP Configuration by Fisher666(m): 3:57pm On Oct 31, 2012|
Hi there guys. I am seeking the advice of a Network Guru.
I currenty have a network which i have enable DHCP for the following IP Range:
10.142.127.2 to 10.142.127.254 in a Zhone Adsl modem.
The DHCP allows up to 254 devices to work with. My problem is that there are about 320 Users connecting to my network. Can anyone advice me how can i play with my IP Class and Subnet Mask to allow more than 254 up to 320 Devices to work with my DHCP?
Awaiting your professional thoughts....

Fisher666: Hi there guys. I am seeking the advice of a Network Guru.If only 254 hosts are allowed in the dhcp, then playing with the subnet mask won't help you achieve your goal.

@Fisher666, It's a simple subnet issue. You've got to change the dhcp settings on your modem to accomodate more hosts. From what you said here, I can tell you that the settings on your modem is going to be 10.142.127.0 255.255.255.0 network which essentially gives you that range. All you need to do is to reconfigure your modem and use a subnet mask that can accomodate all your hosts. I suggest going with 10.142.126.0 and subnet mask of 255.255.254.0. This gives you an ip range of 10.142.126.1 to 10.142.127.254. So, you can now have 510 hosts on ur network.
P.S. In case you are wondering how I got the extra 2 hosts, using this network address makes 10.142.126.255 and 10.142.127.0 valid hosts.

I reconfigured my Modem's Ip configuration according to you concept and it works great now.
Your are a real Network Engineer. I should learn more about Ip addressing and Subnetting coz i am not too strong on those fields
Thank you so much mate!

Glad to have been of help. And contrary to what people think, subnetting is not a hard concept. I suggest you check tutorials online that teach it and you'll master it in no time.

Now that's a solution i didn't think of. Good one @Henry. At least i've learnt a new thing.
